This is hands down one of our favorite places we ate in Bar Harbor (I know right, the Indian food off the coast)! The people were super nice and we ordered the butter chicken and tikka masala along with some butter & garlic naan. The naan was cooked to perfection and the curry was AWESOME! The butter chicken was super hot and kinda on the sweeter side, but we loved it. And the masala wasn't creamy like you would normally expect, but the flavor was even better than normal. The food came out within 10 minutes of ordering and everything was fresh and cooked well. Also a super aesthetic place! Nice outdoor heating lamps so we sat outside and ate. It's a very cute looking Indian restaurant from the outside. We ordered spicy chicken fry, samosa and butter chicken with roti. When we ordered spicy chicken fry, we were expected a indian appetizer, but we were surprised and disappointed with the outcome. Spicy chicken fry looked like kfc nuggets with some chaat masala on. Samosas also were not crunchy on the outside and was quite soggy. Butter chicken tasted okay but there was no cream in it, could not taste any butter in it. Partner and I came here for our last dinner on Mount Desert Island and LOVED it. The food is very authentic, and the chef does a good job of putting their own unique spin on classic dishes. Was craving Indian so went to Royal Indian. There were lots of options and overall the food is decent! I wouldn't hesitate to come here for Indian food, but don't expect anything to completely blow your taste buds off. The patio facing the front is beautiful, but there was no room so we ended up sitting in the back patio, which was still nice (although the small stones made things a little tougher with seating that never was quite grounded. On the food: shared the Momo (chicken dumplings), which were delicious. The chana masala was pretty good, but not quite as flavorful as I would have liked. The chicken wings were decent and so was the biryani rice. All in all, would have liked to see some more options on the menu aside from chicken, but service was decent and the food was fine. If you're craving Indian in a seafood town, don't hesitate to give this a shot. read more

However, today we decided to take a gamble and hop in for a meal - and boy am I glad we did. There were countless vegetarian options, the menu was extensive with a huge variety of food. Each dish was wonderful: full of tasty flavor and great textures. However, above all the hero of the night was the naan bread. It was so good - addicting we ended up ordering about 5 servings of it (the garlic, butter, and of course the garlic cheese). Service was wonderful and quick. The workers were friendly. While in Bar Harbor, I wanted a break from the traditional seafood options and we found Royal Indian. I love Indian and Himalayan food, and I was optimistic about our chances of having a good dining experience here after seeing photos online. When we arrived, we were the only diners there, and were greeted heartily. We dove into the menu and decided on our dishes pretty quickly. To start, we picked the momo ($13.95), and then for entrees we did the butter fish curry($18.95), the palak paneer ($17.95), and the garlic cheese naan ($4.95). The first thing to arrive was the naan. It was the PERFECT pairing of super fluffy and chewy, with stringy cheese and bold garlic topping. I could easily have eaten a whole order by myself. The curries were really good too, my butter fish was bold and creamy, and the paneer was packed with flavor. The downsides were the momo and the rice. I prefer my momo to be super chewy like dimsum, and these were a little stale tasting and dry. Definitely not worth $14. The rice also was a little dry and chalky, but overall not horrible. Prices were high but mostly worth it, service was fast and friendly, and the location was convenient with lots of local parking. After we ate here, my husband continued to talk about the amazing naan here, and I agree it was one of the best garlic cheese naan we've had ever. The reason it is not 5 stars is because I understand the Indian dishes are Americanized (which isn't bad), but also the price is not cheap. We had lunch here on our first day in bar harbor and it was surprisingly delicious food!! We were able to snag an outdoor table almost immediately. The chai was hot and delicious with spices and full of flavor. The chicken tandoori was charred to perfection and arrived on our table on a sizzling plate. I was told this was an amazing Indian restaurant in Bar Harbor. I had high hopes for the food as a result. We ordered the butter chicken, chicken vindaloo, garlic naan, chicken biryani, and an order of the momo. The momo was SOOOOO disappointing. It's basically microwaved dumplings. The shell was hard and the filling was dry and cold. They said it's steamed to order but that's clearly not the case. My dumplings were not steaming hot, not even lukewarm. To make matters worse, they were missing a few. When we told them, they brought out the additional dumplings 20 minutes later and microwaved SO high, the damn things were rocks! So disappointing! Butter chicken was actually OK. We enjoyed the garlic naan and the biryani. The chicken vindaloo may be authentic (I would have no idea) but it's nothing I recognize and very bland. Not tangy at all! This is the only Indian place in Bar Harbor and like a lot of other touristy places, I think they are overpriced. I am all for a local business and I know places are struggling with COVID. I absolutely do not mind supporting a local business, but I really would love for the food and service to match. I think what really annoyed me the most about this place was the lack of hospitality and the sterile-ness of our experience. We walked in on a Sunday evening, around 6 - stood for about 7 - 10 minutes outside in the freezing cold, while the place inside was empty. The hostess saw us several times, but was chatting with another patron - I do believe we should have been offered to come inside. Once inside, we were seated without a smile and offered menus. Throughout our time here, the service just really made me mad. My Naan came out before the actual food (WHY?), there were not enough napkins. I had to flag the server for anything I needed - we were never checked in upon. There was no pride in the food they served and no joy in anything happening around us. Indian food is all about service and hospitality and they really could do better - the food is really decent! Okay I am done venting. Now for the food - we ordered a bunch of food and drinks. I liked the dal "soup", which really back home is daal to be eaten with roti lol. Ragz had the momo soup and he really enjoyed it. He also liked the actual momos which we got to go for later. We tried the chicken wings and these were pretty yummy - heavy on ginger (which I liked), well seasoned and tender. We also shared the chana masala with naan and tandoori roti. Probably one of the worst India food I have had in my entire life. This coming from an Indian must hold some weight. The only reason I'm giving it two stars is coz the staff was good and terrible food quality is out of their control. Ok so vegetable pakoras (fritters) was decent; crispy and well cooked. Our hopes went up for the entrees. What a nightmare, I could never imagine someone could ruin saag paneer to this level; tasteless, flavorless and watery. We had to send it back. Chana Masala was tolerable but on the sweeter side with lots of tomatoes. Garlic naan was fine but that was hardly a saving grace. We saved ourselves by not ordering any dessert and called it a day. My family and I ended up here on a rainy evening as it probably had the shortest wait time (~30 mins) of all the Bar Harbor restaurants. There service was a little shaky and slow at times but the food was quite good! To start we got the momos, a Nepali dumpling - unfortunately the dumplings broke apart very easily. For mains we got chicken tikka masala, jackfruit curry, palak paneer, and fish masala along with garlic naan. The jackfruit curry is original and worth trying for those who eat a lot of Indian food and want something off the beaten path.
