I have been going here since I was a child. I recently came home for a visit and it was as good as ever. I love east where the only donut option is Dunkin and these donuts blow it out of the water. The donut options are pretty standard, but the one stand out is the apple fritter. I have never found one that comes even close in comparison. It's moist and apply in the middle, the outside is glazed and crunchy crisp. Even the standard chocolate frosted donuts are just superb to any donut I've found anywhere else. Just so perfectly fried and fluffy. I will continue to make this a stop every time I come back to my hometown for a visit. read more

I came here on a Saturday morning around 11am and tried their glazed donut. We got a chocolate raised and a maple bar as well. Almost all the donuts had sold out. The glazed and chocolate donuts were soft and chewy, just the way I like my donuts. I would definitely come back to try other donuts, like their apple fritter, French cruller, and bagel sandwiches... but would come in earlier for a better selection. The owner was very nice and generous and hooked us up prior to him closing up the shop. I got to try their tiger tail, but it was a little bit doughy and stale. Make sure to bring cash. Pretty classic, standard donuts. Nothing really special but reliable. As recommended, apple fritter was really good. French cruell is akways my favorite and it was extra soft here, melt in the mouth. I went there today to pick up a Too Good to Go order. The shop was clean and cute. The lady that was working was friendly. I tried the maple bar donut it was delicious. They also gave me a lot of donuts in the Too good to go order so it was definitely worth it. read more

I was in the neighborhood this morning looking for convenience. Most of the time I can't tell one hole in the wall donut shop from another - but it was between this place and Henry's (which I've been to before and it wasn't my fav). I took my time as two kids raced me to the counter and hurriedly placed their orders. The man behind the counter took his time to serve them in a way you dont see very often - with joy, humor and kindness. He smiled and made jokes with them that went a little above their heads, then asked if they would like a free donut which he stuffed into their bag. Next, I placed my order - I think it was like 4 donuts, an apple fritter and an apple juice (it's my cat's birthday so we splurged). When I got into the car, I double checked to make sure the order was correct and saw that he had snuck in a free donut and a bunch of donut holes. In a time where customer service and friendly neighborhood community seems lost between screen time, I was refreshed and touched by the small gesture. The donuts were great too! read more

I'm not sure why my review from several years ago was removed by Yelp, but it's time to write an updated review anyway: So glad Royal Pastries & Doughnuts is still open and rocking their donuts! For about a decade now, we've been coming here for classic varieties of donuts when I don't feel like driving all over OC to get the "best" of each specific type of donut or gourmet varieties. We happily choose Royal for our general donut needs since their donuts are always solid, they always include a few extra donuts and/or donut holes with every purchase, we live nearby, and they are a small family-owned business. But Royal is actually my pick in OC for the best French crullers--they contain just the right amount of soft, airy, eggy dough in the inside; crispness on the outside; and yummy glaze like strawberry, maple, and chocolate. You can really taste the egginess, which is my favorite thing about crullers that's lacking at so many other donut joints. Their hours are a bit limited (listed in the store window as 4:30-10:30am everyday), the Yelp-listed phone number no longer works, and the storefront is a bit drab. But if you are an early riser, live nearby, want a consistently solid donut joint, and/or especially enjoy crullers, then definitely give Royal a shot! read more

Stopped to grab a couple donuts on a weekday morning around 9am. It's an old school "dollar-a-doughnut" type of shop. Not a huge selection but enough to make things interesting. Once inside (there are a couple tables) a grizzled donut man of few words appeared from the back room and took my order: an old fashioned and one with colorful sprinkles. He put them in a small bag, I paid and was on my way. As I walked out to my car I thought the bag felt more full than it should be and a quick glance inside showed he had tossed in a plain cake donut and a couple of glazed donut holes, no charge! Very nice. The donuts were okay; The old fashioned was rather dry but the other was fairly fresh. The donuts holes were really soft and delicious though - very fresh! I went here twice before myself and got a blended coffee and croissant for $8. Overpriced in my opinion but the lady was nice that helped me and the food / drink was good. So today I sent my mom there and she went in and was looking at what was available and trying to order, and the man who was working told her he wanted to close and kicked her out while she was trying to order. This was at 10:50 AM. What type of place 1) randomly closes at 10:50 and 2) kicks customers out while they are trying to order! I had coffee & donuts at Royal Pastries & Doughnuts at 25435 Trabuco Road in Lake Forest. This place was also my first at this location. The place was clean and the server was nice and friendly. I had a: Ham & Cheese Croissant; It was fresh and delicious. I drank a large fresh cup of hot coffee with my meal. For dessert: one donut with raspberry filling, one donut with cream & nuts, and one donut topped with chocolate; They were super duperly delicious. I drove home to write my review. I'd say most pink box donuts places kinda suck. You can tell they've been doing this for years and know that people are going to buy their donuts no matter what. Having said that, this place is pretty darn good. I always judge donuts places by their apple fritter. The apple fritter was crispy and full of nooks and crannies. Well done, Royal. This is the best donut shop in Lake Forest! I stopped in early on a Sunday morning to pick up a dozen donuts for work and was greeted by a young lady right away. I don't know why but when I see pastries or sweets behind a glass case I feel like that kid who puts their nose right up to the glass and points at the one they want. They don't squeeze fillings like custard or jam in the donuts they jazz them up on top which makes them look that much more appetizing. I selected my dozen...bars, old fashioned, blueberry cake donut (yes blueberry), cream filled, and glazed! Before she closed the box of plenty she filled the top with donut holes....best part Free Donut Holes. I got the box to work and they were gone in a flash. Woke up this morning with a donut craving (I'm also 3 months pregnant, so I couldn't just let it go). After looking at reviews, I decided to drive the extra mile here instead of the donut shop closest to my house. I do not regret this. Service was great, and she even threw in a couple extra doughnut holes! I got a variety of doughnuts and although all of them were delicious (I took a good bite out of each one since I couldn't decide what I wanted), my favorite was definitely the glazed doughnut holes--they were perfect! Wish I knew about this place before... or maybe that's a good thing. I've been making more trips to this place now that I've found out about it. Mainly, for my morning donut(s) or filled croissant and hot chocolate. The baked goods are excellent. Just saw the huge cinnamon bun the other morning, looks like I'll need to run a few miles before work again.
