I have been returning to ROYALTY TATTOO on California Drive for close to 10 years. The owner and artists are friendly and helpful. The shop is very clean and spacious. I recently called ROYALTY for a special memorial tattoo and not being very patient, I thought I would not wait and I tried another tattoo place in San Mateo. BIG MISTAKE. The man approached me at the counter. No hello, no smile, just wanted to know what kind of tattoo I wanted. I had already spent over an hour at home drawing it and using color pencils. I told him my drawn tattoo is the size and color I want tattooed. All he had to do was to copy my design. He took my design and left me standing at the counter for 20 minutes. He came back with a design nothing like what I wanted. I thanked him for his time and left. NOW I have an appointment at ROYALTY on the 21st of this month. Always a pleasant experience at Royalty Tattoo Collective. I've only been there twice and only for events because I still don't know what meaningful tattoo I want. I'm a sucker for all things cute though, which is how I found out about RTC when I was looking up kawaii tattoos. My first tattoo from that location was my Calcifer tattoo. I think the artist name was Stephen (?) I could be wrong. I loved the tattoo but I didn't noticed that it was missing the detail lines on the fire and one of lines on the eyes is thicker than the other. It's not that noticeable though, I'm just being picky. The second time is today. This one took awhile but surprisingly it wasn't as busy as the anime event. The details on this Hello Kitty are absolutely pretty from the highlights to the shading! I had my first tattoo done by Sarah, and I absolutely love it!! I was extremely nervous for my first tattoo, and actually went through a few weeks of emailing with Sarah back and forth discussing different concerns I had with getting a tattoo in the first place, and she was very patient and very understanding with me and I really appreciated the insight that she gave me and basically the push I needed to finally commit to a tattoo! It was also very easy setting up an appointment with her, she was very accommodating, and I was able to get an appointment around 2 weeks in advance. She was also amazing with the design process - I gave her a super vague, wishy washy description of what I wanted, but she came up with something stellar that I totally loved. The parlor itself is spacious and clean. The check-in process was easy - I just had to sign a waiver (as expected) and give my ID and then I waited very briefly for Sarah to prep the room. She went over the placement of the design with me to make sure I was happy with it and made adjustments accordingly. Her room is super cute and cozy with cutouts of all her designs all over the walls which gives you a lot to look at while she's doing your tattoo. My tattoo took around an hour and half, and to my surprise, was actually pretty painless. Some mild stinging in some parts but for the most part, I didn't really feel much except for the buzzing. I don't know if that's typical for the location I got it at (shoulder blade) or if it's just a testament to Sarah's work. After we were done, she went over aftercare with me, and made sure that I didn't have any questions before I left. I had such an awesome experience, I'm already thinking about my next one! read more

Been wanting a tattoo for so long and just finally decided to just get it done. Emailed this place to make an appointment. Sent an image and how big I wanted it to be. I was surprised to get an email hours later with an appointment the next day, which was pretty awesome. I had it done last week, and it came out better than I imagined it could be! The original was drawn on rough paper, and Vincent captured that texture perfectly. He was well-prepared, too. When I showed up for my appointment, he had already made two stencils, each of a slightly different size, that I could choose between. From start to finish i had nothing but good experiences. I emailed them in the middle of the shutdown just to inquire about them. I got a response soon afterwards and was told that they were unfortunately closed. I got a follow up email as soon as they opened. I was actually really impressed that they reached out to me because in thought I'd have to go and bug them. I was directed to Fabian who would be my tattoo artist. He was very responsive and was honest about the tattoo I wanted. I instantly liked him because he was open and collaborative with me. There was another tattoo shop I was talking to at the time but they didn't really seem to care? They weren't personable and didn't seem to want to do anything with me unless I booked an appointment and gave them a deposit. Fabian was different. It was easy to talk to him and never pressured me about booking and giving a deposit first before talking to me. I booked an appointment as soon as I spoke to Fabian about what I wanted and he told me what to expect. I was 20 minutes early and was expecting to just waiting in my car. Fabian messaged me 15 minutes earlyy letting me know when it was okay to come inside. As soon as I walked in, I was welcomed. Signed a waiver, my temp was taken and all within 5ish minutes? My temp was taken and everyone was wearing masks. And by everyone, I mean all 4 lol. There was only one other tattoo artist and one other customer. I was placed in the back and the other two towards the front. Way more than 6 feet distancing, so I did feel pretty safe about everything. We talked some more before he started. He showed me the stencil of my tattoo and made sure I liked the size and placement and the colors we'd be working with. As soon as I ok'd everything we started! This is only my second tattoo, and it isn't very big, but damn they still hurt lol. I got my tattoo on the wrist which is probably one of the more tolerable places to get it done at. Fabian was quick and communicated with me well by asking how I was doing. We talked some more and had nice small talk. He also noticed my skin was started to swell a little halfway through so he paused to give me a little break. He started up again and finished soon afterwards! Once we were done, he told me how to care for my tattoo, what to expect in the next couple of days, and recommended products to use. I will definitely be coming back to this place and specifically ask for Fabian. I've also recommended this shop to my friends and family, who have been thinking of getting a tattoo for themselves. I was in line at 930 am waited 3hrs in line just to sign up. When I finally got to the sign up sheet I was able to get my place solidified. After waiting all day they text me at 8pm that they're not able to tattoo anymore. Considering I was one of the first bunch of people in line, waited a total of eleven hours and still didn't get tattooed is really poor management and communication. Guess who's no longer a tattoo virgin? MEEEEEEE :) I got my lovely tattoo by Jerome and he did an amazing job. I called the shop a few days before hand to make sure there was time for Fifi on Saturday. Fast forward to Saturday morning and the whole process was smooth and easy going. The shop is located in Burlingame and it's pretty easy find with street parking available. The shop is very clean and cool. The cleanliness is definitely a plus as you don't want to be getting a tattoo at some sketchy place. I worked with Jerome for the first few minutes to get the design and logistics done. Basically, the what part. Then, comes the where part. I settled down with: Don't let the world change your 笑 - Font: Bright Larch - Inside right forearm - Middle placement - Medium size I was pretty nervous as I didn't know what to expect. I'm good with pain, but the anticipation of the unknown was scary. Luckily my boyfriend was there on my left to lend me his hand. On the other hand, Jerome was great at being sociable to distract the nervousness. Welp, here it goes. 15 minutes later.... DONE. Of course it hurt, but it was tolerable. It was worth it. The line work came out nice and even. When the time comes for my second tattoo, I'll definitely be coming back for Jerome. Ended up getting wonderful treatment from Sarah (who I later found out was the owner of the shop). She was prompt at getting back to my emails and corresponded back-and-forth to discuss the design and set up an appointment. The overall experience was outstanding, clean shop, both Jerome and Sarah were very cordial. My tattoo turned out awesome and I highly recommend royalty tattoo collective. Can't comment on the other artists here but I hear they are well regarded for the styles they specialize in. I got a cover up done by Sarah and quite happy with what we agreed on, and the finished product, which is essentially what was fleshed out on paper, no more, no less. Sarah is a no BS person, she's too busy to suffer fools and she's direct and straight to the point. That being said, she is also kind, has great communication skills, and versatile. She has been around the block with the requisite experience, yet still has the eyes of someone discovering new ways to do things and that motivation towards creativity was exactly what I wanted in someone doing a cover up piece or any piece in general. All of that without the premium of a Don Ed Hardy. And if you want a rad Hello Kitty done, you couldn't find a better place for it! She keeps a meticulously populated calendar, so I'd plan a good amount ahead of time for any "large" or complicated pieces. And if the boys in the shop are available judging from the portfolios you can't go wrong. read more

Oh Chris was amazing so patience with my chopping and changing of my designs. I wanted a memorial tattoo to honor my daughter. He was receptive to change and positioning of the tattoo and so reasonably priced. It was my first tattoo so I was very nervous but. Chris put me at ease and started with a delicate stroke of the tattoo gun and checked in with me. The whole process takes about 2 hrs from checking the stencil to positioning. The aftercare instructions were clear and Chris made sure I understood them before I left. I got emotional when it was completed but he was very sweet and didn't get all weird and awkward. The salon itself is clean and has interesting art and display cabinets to distract yourself during the tattoo but the "pain "was completely bearable. I got the tattoo on my inner left arm. I was recommended Chris by a fellow bereaved mom and now I recommend Chris to all of you :) The photo is right after hence the slight puffiness. read more
