Been a couple of times. Food is just ok but really expensive. Most entrees at lunch were more than $22 each. Cramped inside.

My review is based off Bud,. the owner. I have frequented Royers yearly with several friends that I have brought along for Round Top antique show. However, on this trip one of my friends the very day we were leaving had a death in the family and couldn't attend. When arriving I was prac berated about having one short and not calling in to let them know. He then continued to tell me there was a 25.00 charge. The food is good but VERY expensive (50.00) for a steak. Bud is a very rude and arrogant person that needs to learn that your PIE isn't the end all beat all and people do have choices. They have lost not only myself but the group that I bring along with me when visiting Round Top. Not a friendly place and I will not support this guy's business no longer. read more

Stop by for some pie but don't bother having dinner unless you like being gouged for mediocre/bad options. Round Top is cute and quiet, if you go at off times, i.e. weekdays during the day (especially when it's not summer, I'm guessing). The people we talked to were very friendly. I decided to check out this famous cafe for lunch, and it's cute and charming and very quintessentially central Texas. However, I hate to say that I was a little underwhelmed by the food, particularly the famous pie. I had a fried fish sandwich and it was pretty standard. The flaky white fish was nicely fried in a coating that tasted like a double-dipped fried chicken coating. I liked that. The toppings sounded kind of interesting but none of the flavors wowed me--the taste of the guacamole was little reminiscent of the kind you buy in a tub at the grocery store. The bread was nice and soft and didn't compete with the fried fish, which was a good thing. It had some kind of sauce on it that was supposed to be spicy, but didn't have a terrible amount of flavor. Fries were skin-on and freshly cut, but not particularly crunchy. I really like my fries crunchy. I think it was something like $13 or $14, which is a little on the pricey side for a sandwich. My husband and sister had the burger and the shrimp BLT, respectively, and also thought they were just ok. My husband asked for chips instead of fries and he got a bag of Lay's--sorry, but that's pretty lame. Now on to dessert. We ordered 3 pieces of pie to share--pumpkin, cherry, and oatmeal cranberry. First off, I have to say that their crust is kind of pale and lacking in flavor and is kind of underbaked. So, not a worthwhile expenditure of calories in my opinion. I love desserts and bake a lot, and I know how challenging it is to get all the components of a pie to come out exactly how you want them--filling to be cooked properly, crust to be nice and brown and flaky, bottom to not be soggy. But pie is their thing! They should get the pies right! The pumpkin filling was pretty good, the cherries tasted good but I wasn't a fan of the red goo, and the oatmeal cranberry was ok--basically a big, soft oatmeal cookie baked in pie crust. At around $5 a slice, they're rather expensive pieces of pie. I know this place is famous and all, perhaps because it's a little in the middle of nowhere and they're a local institution. But I'm sad to say that I would not run back here. Maybe the food is better at dinner, but with main dishes in the $20-$25 range, I probably would go elsewhere based on the quality of the lunch offerings. Sad face! read more

Royers is worth the drive and worth the wait. Excellent service and even better food. The steak special is served over mashed potatoes with portabella & onion, topped with a red wine/rosemary cream sauce. It is AMAZING and will ruin you on ordering steak anywhere else. Also, I'm not a huge fan of pie, but I love their pies. Junkberry is my favorite, and the one with blueberry, lemon, and oatmeal is incredible, too. Great restaurant! If there's a wait, get a glass of wine or a cold beer and walk around charming Round Top. read more

Don't you love it when know-it-all twenty-somethings write reviews on Yelp critical of prices (Were you raised on McDonald's Dollar Menu?) and decor (Do you really want every place you dine to look like Cheddar's?) This place is way off the beaten track, and they celebrate it by keeping their own counsel. Their business motto, mentioned on the menu and other displays, is L. I. T. S. I'm sure it stands for "Life Is Too Short" (My wife thought it was "Life In The Sticks".) Either way, it's shorthand for an attitude that says, "We're going to give you what we think is the best, most fun dining experience in our neck of the state. If you don't like it, enough others will. Thanks for dropping by." With that said, I can testify that the service was great. Wife's burger was a substantial chunk of beef patty, medium well & juicy, on a sweet bun. My grilled shrimp BLT, a specialty of the house, was a fun mix of flavors on a sub bun. The real specialty of the restaurant, however, is their pies, and though we were more than satisfied by the main course, we indulged (forced ourselves to try) a couple of delicious samples. My buttermilk was great, but my wife's choice of Junk Pie, named in honor of local celebs the Junk Gypsies, was a mashup of fruit and sweet and pastry that was absolutely to die for. Topped by the cafe's homemade vanilla, it would have been worth the two-hour drive from our Baytown home all by itself. We recommend. read more

Over $100 for two HORRIBLE appetizers, two dinners (with the tiniest piece of - well, the menu said it was snapper, but...) and two desserts. NEVER again. NEVER NEVER NEVER NEVER NEVER again will we go there. We could have eaten at a 5 star restaurant here in Houston for the ridiculous price we paid there. Really, truly underwhelming stuff. We decided that if we were ever to go to Round Top again, we will go to a sandwich place. As one of the other guests at the B&B said to us, "You can't really ruin a sandwich." I've been to Royers twice now, and each time I leave wanting to come back (and I leave with pies in my hands). The place is small, so expect to wait if you come during peak times. But the place is kitsch, so there is enough to look at and the honor system beers puts a nice spin on things before you even try the food. Bud (the owner) has only been there one of the two times I dined there. He is quite a character, and if your feelings get hurt easily then send someone else up from your party to put your name on the list. I have tried the chicken (heavily breaded and delicious), steak (surprisingly excellent), soups (inventive and tasty) and fries. All were excellent, except the fries were just "OK" and I would recommend to skip the fries so that you could save room for pie. The last time we went, several people in our party had the shrimp BLT and said it was great. the pies are fantastic, with some great variations that are sure to leave scratching your head while choosing which kind to try. I am excited to bring my over-sized friend from NYC when he comes to visit early in 2012, I suspect that this "foodie" from NYC will be right at home with the large portions and tasty food. read more

My wife and I called at 230 to make a reservation for 5. We were greeting by the staff and 5 and promptly seated. Rolls and garlic herb butter were out of this world. We placed our order. Wife had the pork chops and they were delicious. I ordered the steak and it was perfection. Cooked to order and the seared crust was outstanding. We had a slice of the apple pie and took home some cinnamon rolls. Wait staff was outstanding and our glass was always filled with water before empty. We will be back. I had the fish topped with shrimp (totally blanking on the name of it) and HOLY LORD. It. Was. Amazing. I also had brussel sprouts which I normally hate, but I woofed them down like they were candy. I'm giving this four stars only because I wish we had a heads up when we made our reservations that we would be sharing a table with two other parties--luckily, everyone at our table was super friendly and it ended up being a great time. However, if you are anti-social or think you're going to get a VIP table, you may want to know that you're expected to dine amongst strangers :) totally delicious, going back for sure. read more

We are from the area so we decided to try it out. Positives: steak was fantastic, juicy, and cooked perfectly, potatoes were good, pie and ice cream rocked. Negatives: the atmosphere and decor were bizarre. The price of the food is not in line with the kitschy decorations. My boyfriend had planned on taking me there for a date night because it was supposed to be nice, but it felt more like a diner. We felt like we were out for display. as for the sides, not good. Sweet & Salty Pie for Online Order This review is strictly for the sweet & salty pie for online order. I saw this on food networks top 5 chocolate show and was excited to order this pie. We spent pennies shy of $50 for 1 regular size pie, and boy was it a disappointment! Maybe its great if you eat it there or pick up a fresh one from the shop, but if your thinking about ordering it online, think twice. GREAT review from Brenda P!!! I am Brenda's husband and I'm very proud of her. I've been in customer service related fields for over 30 years (six of which were serving our great nation), mostly in leadership capacities. I believe the statement made by my wife in regards to race being a factor to be accurate. The owner reached out to her today in an attempt to make it right, claiming that he's certain that race wasn't a factor (I'm appreciative of that). However, he wasn't present when we dealt with the service rep. He was adamant at "not" sitting us with approximately a dozen empty seats in the small dining area. He even suggested that we order and eat on the porch of the restaurant. At $32 a pop for a pie (which I'm certain is good) along with other add on items would have come up to a good ticket for our time. (Please note there were five of us attempting to sit and eat.) A claim was apparently made referencing minority employees at the diner. This doesn't eliminate the fact that we were denied seats. Making that statement is like a racist claiming to have "black" friends, therefore they shouldn't be considered racists. Absurd! Anyhow, I'm hopeful this clarifies some things. read more

For starters, the food is the best Texas has to offer. It's a gem in the Texas hill country, and if you're lucky enough to pass through, stopping here for lunch or dinner is an absolutely must. I have dreams at night about the Snapper, Shrimp BLT, Steak, Bud's Smash, Pork Tenderloin, Stuffed Quail, Fresh rolls and Herb Butter, Sunday Fried Chicken...I could go on...but you can read the menu online and see all the other things I dream about. There's really not one bad menu item (and I know, I've tried them all). The service is exceptional, the atmosphere is funky and truly Texan, and the first bite of that Strawberry Rhubarb or Chocolate Chip pie leaves me a little bit speechless every time. As many times as I've been, I am always floored at the flavors of the food and the way I am treated like family. I saw a negative review likening Royer's to Hoarders, and I can say the only way this legendary restaurant is like the show Hoarders is when I walk in the door and start hoarding pie onto my plate. I'm a lifetime customer, and one of the most unique things about this place, besides the food, are the posters, sayings and family photos that hang from the walls and ceilings. The meaning behind those items is like a scrapbook. It's not random - it's an expression of the way the family is blessed to work together and share their love of food and their creativity in tandem. For me, it's a blessing to see photos of each new grandchild on the door. First of all - GO. Second - Sit on the porch with a beer and chat with Bud. I went a little time ago. I was not thoroughly impressed as I was told by my group of people. I might be a little tougher than average due to my profession. The food was ok, the wine list was awful...however; I don't think they care so much about that. I got a specialty steak with rosemary creme sauce. The steak was good as well as the sauce, but WAY TOO MUCH sauce. Then, I had dessert. We all kind of tasted each others pie. Although the pie was good, it was not earth shattering. Our first trip here, and unfortunately, also our last. The good things: -The place was nicely decorated -Good selection Our visit: -The guy at the door was very rude. We asked how long the wait would be, and he rudely said he didn't know. OK, maybe you don't know, but at least look at me when you say it, and at least try to use a nice tone of voice. We saw multiple open tables behind him, but didn't say anything since nobody was ahead of us. After about 10-15 minutes a group came in and were immediately sat. I saw on here that they don't allow reservations, but when I asked why they were seated ahead of us, he said they had reservations. This upset me, but I figured we had waited this long, so we should stick it out. After we left I called in to ask if they took reservations, and was told they do not. I can only assume we were lied to. We were finally sat after about 20 minutes. -The food seemed expensive when I first saw the menu, but I figured the portions would make up for it. I was wrong again. The portions were average at best, and probably just below average. After seeing the portions I was still optimistic because I hadn't tasted it yet. It wasn't bad, but nothing special either, especially for the price. -The waiter was very rude when we had questions about the menu, it seemed like he expected us to know it by heart, as well as the ingredients. He seemed upset that we ordered water. I assume because this would lower the bill, and thus, possibly the tip? When we politely asked for refills, he turned around without saying a word, and must have taken his time because it took a good 10 minutes before we got them. -We ordered some pie for dessert, and it was obviousl frowned upon that we shared a slice. Once again the taste and the quantity was nothing close to being worth the price. -Finally, my husband and I consider ourselves good tippers, and even though we weren't impressed overall, we still left 20% in cash on the table ($20). Had the best dinner with friends! The first time to experience Royer's during "off season". The menu is to die for, with more items to choose from than what is offered during antique week. I chose the pork tenderloin with broccoli and quinoa. The pork was topped with a sweat peach & spicy glaze. YUM! I saved room for their award winning pie! I had the apple. SO GOOD! The food is exceptional, but the service is even better. Angie was on top of it the whole evening. She is funny and is truly the best waitresses around! (And she was patient with our group). Such a fun atmosphere! A must visit if you're anywhere near Round Top- or even west of the Mississippi (it's worth the drive) You'll feel like you're eating at your friend's house! We had the shrimp BLT, pork tenderloin, snapper, and the fillet (I helped myself to some of each) and they were all beyond words! The creamed corn, mashed potatoes, and veggies were equally as tasty! Of course we also had pies which, again, were so amazing! I would suggest an elastic waistband or mumu to allow for maximum wardrobe expansion! You'll need it! Cute little place when you first arrive. I couldn't make out the theme on the inside; there's random stuff hanging everywhere, it does seem a bit cluttered. Service was fast and friendly. My fam. order a house salad with chicken tenders ( which you could tell everything was fresh!), a kids cheeseburger (received very WELL done :/), a stuffed quail appetizer ( I believe it had cilantro, shrimp and bacon = very tasty) and the pork tenderloin with a peach glaze and black pepper ( this was good) I chose the mashed potato casserole for a side (which had a sour team cheesy-ness to it) and the broccoli casserole/salad* (this was...different... Again, sour cream, mayo, and some raisins mixed in = I wasn't a fan and only took 2 bites). The house raspberry tea was yummy. Lastly, we split the blueberry lemon pie, omg so good! I don't see it on the menu listed so I'm wondering if it's seasonal, but please try! We may be back. read more

On Sat July 13th, 2013 we eagerly stopped at "ROYERS" upon reviews to eat, and while driving up to park there was this crusty ole grump standing halfway inside/outside the door with his arms crossed and glaring at us before even exiting our car. The 3 of us walked in and were seated at a less than 1/2 card size table. !!! My husband( a small guy) sat down in the chair and said he thought it was going to collapse and so I said trade out the chair next to you-so he did. Ok now here comes the best part of all !!! " The MENU" !!! We began looking and we each kept blinking our eyes like we needed magnifying glasses to make sure we were seeing the $$$$$$ before our eyes were correct and not a misprint. I don't mind at all paying for a good steak but $55.00 get real. We all at that point had agreed to just leave and the waiter said " let me show you the lunch menu-which was dinner time actually- Haaaaaaaaa yeah right ! We didn't even touch our glass of water in fear of what that might actually cost :/ We calmly got up and left and the "OWNER" standing by the door with arms crossed again , didn't even ask us why we were leaving ( guess he used to it ) if not then woohoo we are the first possibly to not be taken by the hoop-da-lah of this place- No siree will not be ever going back-EVER !!! We went down the road a piece and ate at K-Bobs and all 3 of us ate for $30.00 and it was great food. There is not one steak on this earth worth $55.00 sir. I buy grass fed beef and the tenderloin and has not ever cost me $55.00 for one steak-Get real. Lovely little cafe in Round Top! I went on a Saturday to get out of Austin. The cafe was packed - I waited an hour for a table I ended up sharing with my friend and four other people. It was fun to chat with strangers but I can see why some people wouldn't like it. After having a great burger, my friend and I walked over to the pie shop across the street in the town square. They have savory and sweet pies, and honestly, I wish I skipped the cafe and went straight to the pie shop! Their strawberry rhubarb and apple pies are amazing. read more

I have to agree that I was very disappointed with Royers. We visited Round Top in September and were looking forward to eating here, but because of the three hour long wait, decided to try again next time. No big deal, we didn't mind and knew we'd be back in the spring. Sure enough, my sisters and I took my mom to Round Top yesterday for her 55th birthday and couldn't wait to surprise her with dinner and dessert at Royers. Like others, we were told they don't take reservations and that the wait would be 4 hours. We arrived at 5pm and were told to come back at 9. That seemed a little much to us but decided to stick around because we really wanted to celebrate my mothers birthday with their famous pies. We ate dinner elsewhere, shopped a bit more, and passed the time until 9pm. When we went back, we were told it would be "a few minutes" and to "go back outside." We did and finally, 20 minutes later, we were seated. We were really excited to finally try the pies!! When our waitress arrived to take our order, she was clearly exhausted and not in a hospitable mood. We've all worked in service so we understood and didn't make too big a deal of it. We were really trying to just enjoy the experience! She took our water order and my sister politely told her we were ready to order, thinking it would help her out. Wrong again, After ordering, she looked like someone had slapped her. Puzzled, we explained that we were just having dessert, at which she replied "well did you tell them that?!?" We all looked at each other wondering if we had missed something but she stomped off before we could answer. Now having felt entirely unwelcome and uncomfortable, we just really wanted to leave. We ate our pies feeling rushed, never got a water refill, another waitress took our payment, and we never saw our waitress again until she dropped off our receipt. So many things made this a bad experience for us and I was embarrassed that we couldn't celebrate my moms birthday with dessert without feeling like a burden. I understand busy, I understand every restaurant has rules, but I am also not a mind reader. I've never had to tell a host what I'm going to eat when I'm waiting to be seated. Were we supposed to get pies to go and eat them outside? Or were they going to send us away? We still managed to spend $40 on pies/ice cream and nobody dared share one. Since they close at 9:30, I wouldn't think that coming at 9:00 for four slices of pie would be world altering, but I was wrong. There is no sign outside or any note that customers should mention if they're only having dessert. Feeling reprimanded, we left after our dessert and agreed, we won't be coming back. The pie was good, not great. We also found it tacky that the restroom sign told guests to use the "pe-cans" (port-a-potty) outside since it was antique week. Really disappointed, Royers. The tenderloin sandwich tasted great but it was so sloppy we had to eat them without the bun. One of the worst things was that you have to sit with other people you do not know. Who does that ? The owner barks out orders on where you will sit as soon as you walk in. He just sits in his king chair. The other people are right. It is cluttered and I actually like clutter, but this is over the top. The male waiter was excellent. The place was mobbed because of Round top days. The pie is excellent. BEWARE Don't sit anywhere near the owner. He is loud and he will talk to you the whole time you eat. Again who wants that. If you are looking for a quiet place and don't like socializing with complete strangers like them or not, Don't go there ! read more
