I'm not sure where to start. This is a place we've driven passed what's feels like hundred times and each time we say, we should stop and see if the fries are any good. I mean there's a huge box of fries outside. Well today I wasn't prepared for what we experienced. The place was filled with shot glasses. Cool looking place what's seems to be in the middle of nowhere. This dude greets us introducing himself as "Roy" the owner. He welcomes us and literally gives us the behind the scenes tour of the kitchen and the freezer. What can I say, when you get an unscheduled tour on a Sunday morning and the kitchen and surrounding areas are clean and organized that's a good place. This guy and his wife Barbra run it. He's super cool and self admitted a bit crude but fun nonetheless. He told us we could order anything even if it wasn't on the menu. Sunday everything on the special menu is $10. Next week he's doing a fried chicken buffet for FREE. He says once he didn't have anything and just like doing it for people. He's 72 full of life and maybe a little full of crap but totally fun and friendly. Good food, good service and a fun place on the "peak to peak highway" just outside Blackhawk. Well. Just be prepared. Don't let things bother you - like a loud boistrous and bawdy owner. Roy entertained us and he was something else - I wouldn't bring my kids here and he was borderline - or over the border on his behavior and comments. But we blew it off and had our drinks and left as we had places to go. The bartender kept our drinks full and was she was very attentive. We stopped here in the morning and caught a chill time with the nicest employees and other customers. Seeing the big French fries display out front is what drove us to stop, but the building on the outside was extremely fascinating which drew us to check out inside, and walking inside the door was even more fascinating. So many shot glasses on display which were fascinating to see, walls covered in different styles of artwork, an outdoor walk area and patio, and not to mention the sweet counter tops!! The atmosphere was great, we felt very welcomed. The service was great, the food was AMAZING. The selections on their menu sounded delicious and for a good price! I have been coming here for over 12 years and it is the heart of Gilpin County. This morning I was in the mood for steak and eggs and debated the $18 price tag. It was one of the best steak and eggs that I have ever eaten. A beautiful and perfectly seasoned ribeye prepared a perfect rare with excellent seasoning. No steak sauce needed. Is Roy a character, yes. Would he give anyone in need, regardless of color, class, orientation or any other characteristic, the shirt off of his back, yes. Barb and Roy are jewels of Gilpin County and give back so much to the community. If you are looking for a boring chain restaurant experience with blah food, there are plenty of opportunities for that down the mountain. To make a long story short, if you want excellent food, a friendly mountain community vibe, and a little bit of Gilpin County mountain character, come into Roy's Last Shot any chance you get. read more

It is a GEM in the mountains! Good food with an excellent, fresh side salad! They accommodated me with a bun-less chicken burger with lettuce as a bun substitute. After hiking in Golden Gate State Park until dark, we decided to stop by the this restaurant a few miles away from the entrance off of Highway 119 and we're pleasantly surprised at all of the artwork and woodwork of this beautiful mountain eatery (bar and restaurant). The food was very good and again, the side salad was amazing and staff was very friendly! We played pool ($1.00) and had a really nice evening there and will go back!! read more

Went here for lunch and was excited to see all the shot glasses and meet Roy. He is the most generous owner and came right to us to welcome us. I love his no-nonsense personality and you can tell he is proud of what he has created. He also gave sample of his homemade pork green chili soup and at the end of our meal gave us a complimentary plate of warm apple pie with ice cream! That was the bomb! The food is top notch! Roy's was the closest place for breakfast from our Airbnb. The reviews seemed okay, and everyone loves diner food. Roy from the start made us very uncomfortable. He made several sexual comments about our group in front of my 8 year old child. He was cussing left and right and visibly drunk by 10:30 am. The food was also terrible. We loved everything about this place. The atmosphere, Roy, Michelle and Barbara, the food and Cheeka! My husband ordered the pizza, my BIL and I ordered the green chili burger with hand cut fries and my SIL had the pork tenderloin with rice. Everything was delicious. Roy cooks a lot of the food and about 90% of all the food is homemade. The kitchen is spotless. Roy is a hoot for sure. We had so much fun bantering back and forth with him. He loves his customers and wants to make sure they have a good experience. If you don't like F-bombs, stay away. We will definitely go back to visit! It was a fun day!! read more

I have been here a few times in a motorcycle ride for breakfast. The service is very "backwood" mountain feel. Service is not bubbly and chirpy, but you will get warm food. If you are looking for unique culinary experience, not your place. However, we had a large group, we had good company, we had smiles and a great time and we got served and had warm food. Beautiful views from the deck. If i were local, this looks and feels like a place I would hang out at. Blues was playing over the speakers and they put out a decent burger and fries. we've visited the last shot at least once a year over the past 12 years. even continuing to visit after witnessing the owner come out, scream at customers, and kick them out for critiquing his inconsistent food. he got the return visits from us because of the interesting decor and the fact that he's the only restaurant in the area for miles. when you're coming up or down the mountains with a car full of hungry people and you see a restaurant, you roll with it. that was up until i got food poisoning that showed up about 6 hours after eating there. more about the food itself. it's a big menu and the food is great, except when it's not. as i mentioned earlier, though, he gets volatile when it comes to criticism. alongside inconsistent (and potentially bacteria-ridden) food, you can never know when they are or are not open. they never have a consistent time that they're open. we drove by several times, thinking they they were open (what yelp and website would say) just to learn that the doors were locked. now learning that he proudly flies a trump flag, i'm unsurprised but disappointed that we gave him our money for so long. with more than enough reason, we will not be returning nor recommending this place to anyone else. read more

So very disappointed with this restaurant. The YELP reviews made it sound so wonderful, that we drove from Black Hawk one morning to eat breakfast ( said it opened at 8:00). It was closed at 9:30 on a Friday morning in December! Apparently, they may be open when they say they are, or they are not. I advise calling ahead. Had to stop at a place with a 15 foot statue of french fries in front. Met Roy, a real character, and discovered he has an 11,000 plus collection of shot glasses. Stayed for burgers and fries. A delicious stop on your mountain journey. Low key atmosphere, a nice selection of beers on tap, and a robust food menu. They have a good kids menu as well, and breakfast is served all day. Definitely one of the best food establishments around the area. read more
