Made a last min dinner reservation via open table for 3 and it did not disappoint. Our server (from Cali) was personable and had excellent recommendations. We shared the ahi poke nachos and ordered the macadamia crusted mahi mahi, pork shank, and grill trio. All hearty options and very delicious. The first time I've seen my husband get a to-go box at a fine dining establishment because of the portion size - pork shank was very generous. I'd order any of the dishes we selected again. Roy's is known throughout Hawaii, and each one I've been to did not disappoint. Roy's is somewhere you'd go for a special occasion. It has that old-school vibe, with great service, and great food. As soon as we sat down, they brought over some kids' quesadilla appetizers. The kids were quiet and we could sit and relax. Their menu is a blend of land and sea entrees. Even the kids' menu was elevated with short ribs and green beans. We all enjoyed our meals. The butterfish, scallops, and white fish were among our favorites. Came here on a Thursday night for my birthday. Place was surprisingly full. Service was a little slow. Seems like they only had 1 person working my section with a lot of tables. The poke with Okinawa purple chips was the best appetizer I've had so far on the island. The main was a little disappointing though. My husband ordered the miso butterfish and I got the macadamia nut crusted whitefish. My fish was so dry. When I ordered the fish, the server recommended medium for the cook to keep the juices, so I was very surprised to find my fish so overcooked. My amazing husband swapped his dish with mine, so I still enjoyed my dinner. The butterfish was cooked perfectly and exactly how I expected my dish to come out. Half way through the meal, our server let us know that the lava cake and the pineapple upside down cake take 30 minutes to cook, so we ordered them early. They came at the end of our dinner, along with a free chocolate cake complimentary for my birthday. It was a nice gesture, but we were too full to take more than a bite. Wish they had warned us so we didn't have to order 2 desserts on top of that. The pineapple upside down cake was so amazing. The char on the pineapple gives it depth, and it's not too sweet. A must try from here. The lavacake was sadly overcooked. We didn't let them know because my husband ate it all anyway. But for the $17 they charged for the desserts, I expected better. We had a great time celebrating two birthdays here at Roy's. Hospitality was excellent. We made a reservation day of and were seated right away. The hostess greeted us warmly and our server was very accommodating. When our kids saw the pineapple in my drink they wanted one too and the waitress made it happen. The food was delicious and everyone enjoyed their meal. The butterfish was so soft it melted in my mouth. The most surprising part was the 4 course keiki menu for $16. Such a nice way to get the kids interested in a 2 hour meal! They looked forward to each course and tried veggies, short ribs and a surprise ice cream sandwich at the end. Hadn't been here in 3 years and I was impressed that while everything else on the island seems more expensive, Roy's still has their amazing value $16 kids 4 course meals! The kids meals have 2 starters: quesadillas and a veggie plate with edamame hummus (delicious!) and sweet potato chips. Then they could choose between pasta, chicken teriyaki, salmon or short ribs. For dessert it was a sprinkles ice cream sandwich cookie. My kids loved it! I ordered the scallops with uni and truffle risotto. I couldn't see the uni but there were pieces of truffles and seaweed salad in the middle. There was also a very generous portion of caviar on every single scallop. It was delicious! The only thing I didn't like was the $12 focaccia bread. It tasted dry and there were zero soft pieces because they sliced the bread first and then toasted it sliced then drizzled olive oil over it so it was super toasty and oily. I prefer soft fluffy bread so this was a greasy disappointment. I traded my kids pieces of bread for their edamame hummus. Service was outstanding! Everyone was very nice and our water glasses never empty. I had the daily lentil soup and salad. The soup was freshly made and delicious. The salad was just ok. They do not offer bread and butter at this location. The server gave no explanation. My husband had the mix grill, excellent. Second time my husband had the misoyaki butterfish entree, again excellent. I wanted something light. I ordered the soup which was good and sides of fingerling potatoes, grilled asparagus and bok choi. I was surprised when the fingerling potatoes came thinly smashed and fried. Is that a new thing? Our server was overwhelmed by a large party near us but managed to make the best of it and I'm very grateful for her excellent service despite the difficulty. It's a pretty restaurant with a nice lakeside view but it's too loud. Between the loud music, loud patrons, and poor room silencing material it was more like a sports bar during the Superbowl than a fine dining experience. I really didn't like that. The food was excellent, I must say. From the spicy complimentary edame to every entree, the food was delicious, perfectly prepared, and well seasoned. I couldn't find a fault in anything ordered at our table. We had farm salads, the local macadamia crusted white fish, and the seared ahi. No room for dessert. The only thing I'd warn you off of is the Roy Yamaguchi Chardonnay on the wine list. It's a dreadful wine. The New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc is far better. read more

The service at the table was not bad, but it seemed like we waited quite awhile between each "course" l would have thought the kitchen was backed up but more than one table with larger parties that sat after us were done and gone before us. As for the food, of what we had there was almost nothing I would ever recommend or order again except the Caesar Salad which was more Caesar inspired than actual Caesar. The Poke Nachos were ill conceived and poorly executed, some of the too thick sweet potato chips were to crisp, some were very hard and unenjoyable and others had gotten stale and were kind of rubbery. The Poke itself was very good but poke sweet potatoes chips did not go well together but I guess they knew that since they come on opposite ends of the platter, so they should have called them poke chips and salsa. The Ravioli Duxelles was again a really bad dish no part of it tasted great alone or combined. I'd have rather gone to Macaroni Grill and gotten there similar dish with marsala sauce 100 times better. I had the meatloaf which I don't regret as I like meatloaf and wanted to try it but in reality nothing on that plate tasted great, I imagine they wanted it to be gluten free so not bread crumbs? The Glace that was on the plate was not anything I would have served, The brush stroke of mushroom gravy was so scant I can hardly have an opinion but I'm leaning towards not good, maybe that is why they were sparing. The potatoes, I guess there are different receipts for "Garlicked" mashed potatoes, this one did not include Garlic and it came from the side of a box I'd wager. The desert claimed to be pineapple upside down cake. It was an insult to pineapple upside down cake. Seriously the biggest insult was waiting half and hour for it. The whole concept is that fresh pineapple is baked into the bottom of the cake and then the cake is flipped over. They provide an undercooked cupcake with warm pineapple relish dumped on the top with Ice cream if it was vanilla they didn't put much vanilla in it and WHY CHOCOLATE CHIPS ON THE PLATE? If I were to sum it all up the combinations of things on everything dish frankly even the Caesar that was good over all, The COMBINATIONS were weird and and put together like a novice cook with an iron palate came up with them after looking at Pinterest all day. It's a little bit of a drive out there from Kailua Kona so I doubt I give it a second shot. read more

The kids ordered pasta and teriyaki chicken and left saying they were "so full," which is always a good indicator. The portions were generous and well prepared. After 20 minutes the host came to apologize and that our waitress had an emergency. It was not an emergency- we saw her nearby taking pictures with guests at another table. We placed our order. Macadamia nut crusted fish (tasty) and the rib eye - the worst rib eye! We expected a flame grilled steak - instead we got a soft steak that was so disappointing. Small lobster tails. For the price of that steak (I wouldn't even call it a steak) it was ridiculous! Waitress was not attentive, had to wait awhile for another glass of beer. I've been to high end restaurants and we expected Roy's waikoloa to have excellent service and steak- the worst service and steak. Go elsewhere! Trust us and the previous reviews. Come on Roys, you can do better. Your staff (waitress) needs to be reeducated in a service class. Every guest should be treated equally. Not left out. And steaks should be prepared correctly. A lot of people were already seated in the restaurant. There were some paintings on the wall, but the lower dining area seemed bland and needed something. Worst dinner decision we made while on the big island. Wife and I came to Waikoloa Village for our honeymoon and decided to try this "high-end" restaurant the night before we left. HUGE MISTAKE. Waitress was extremely slow, made recommendations TWICE before we could even place an order. Took almost 30 minutes to get a mocktail my wife ordered all while almost waiting a whole hour before we even got food, AFTER ORDERING. The worst part was actually the food. My wife ordered the meatloaf which the waitress raved about, which turned out to be cold, un-flavorful and half assed presentation. I ended up getting one of their pricier items, Surf & Turf, which was the saddest excuse for a surf & turf possible. Steak was bland and didn't even have a nice sear on it, while the lobster was still packed in it's shell, making it extremely hard to get to the meat without having to manhandle the shell. Experience was so bad that we didn't even want to stay for dessert, so we took it go. All in all, the best thing at this restaurant was the mocktail that my wife had waited almost half an hour to get. I will not be returning here and would suggest anyone to save their money and eat else where. read more

We were seated and it took our waiter 15 minutes to even approach our table, and he practically sprinted away when we didn't have our choice ready the instant he asked. I also had questions about the menu and he quite literally said "you're gonna have to figure that one out on your own." - and then proceeded to sprint away again. Our food was mid, I ended up just getting a couple appetizers and a salad, my fiance had the filet with lobster. The crab cakes were not good, they seemed to be made out of canned crab and the pickled vegetables that came with them were disgusting. The chicken spring rolls were good, hard to mess that up. The ribs were so fatty and came with 0 presentation just a messy stack of ribs on a plate. The wedge salad was maybe the worst I've ever had. My fiance said his filet and the lobster tail were good. We had 3 appetizers, a salad, a kids meal, 1 cocktail, 1 NA beer, and 1 steak with lobster and our bill was $250 - it was easily the worst quality meal we've had on the island, the worst service, for the highest bill. Now let's talk about ambience... this section of the restaurant had me feeling like I was in a 2 star hotel ballroom. Gross carpet floors and ugly tables, zero art, low ceilings, zero ambiance.I felt so claustrophobic and ready to leave by the end. My meal also gave me a massive stomach ache. This was a horrible experience. We made reservations for Christmas several weeks in advance. We were so looking forward to ti! We got to the hostess station and the woman there was incredibly rude and surly. She barely acknowledged our presence. When she did, all she said was "name?" Not a greeting of any sort. She then told us there were changes to the fixed price menu. No explanation until I asked specifically. The server, Cameron, was MIA for almost 20 minutes even though he saw us and was attending other nearby tables. He finally showed up almost 20 minutes after we got seated. He was so fake and over the top I could not even look at or listen to him. The food, when it finally arrived, was very mixed. The soup was inedible, the salad fine and the mahi caprese decent. My steak pieces were inconsistently cooked with some being almost burnt and others still mooing. To get even basic refills of water, we practically had to tackle another server. Although, we were the lucky ones. A nearby table waited for over 30 or 40 minutes to even put in their order. I recognize it was Christmas dinner. First impression it's tucked away in the King's shopping center, upon entering it's nothing fancy, but you do have a view of the pond in the background. I decided to dine at the bar as I checked in early and the happy hour menu had quite the selection. I ordered the Szechwan ribs to start - so yummy! Meat was nice and tender and full of flavor. For my main I went with the misoyaki butterfly fish. Hands down my favorite thing to get. The fish came piping hot and was full of flavor, however the rice and broccoli was not warm. Don't get me wrong, the dish was delicious, however wish the entire dish was at the same temp - warm. Tried the pineapple upside down cake as well. It was good and full of flavor. The carmel drizzle on the side enhanced the flavor profile. If I could change anything I would sub the ice cream for vanilla bean.. just a personal preference. Really great experience at aloha hour today! We shared three pupus - Aloha Ribs, Dynamite Shrimp, and Roy's Classics (Butter Fish and Ahi) Taco Style. All three were spectacular! My Lilikoi Lemon Drop was on point and my other half enjoyed his Pineapple Mana Wheat beer. We were greeted with some edamame and waters. You can order off the full menu at the bar, but the Aloha Sessions menu is pretty extensive on its own. The staff works together and they seem to all love their jobs. Cameron, our bartender, was fun.
