    Me and the Duck Tree!
    Renee N.

What a fun little jaunt this is! This was my second time out to the Rubber Duck tree. My daughter has always wanted to go so off we went yesterday morning. I must admit that the first time I went, I made a wrong turn so I never made it. I clarified my directions and went back out with a friend last spring and found it no problem. You can access this hike by parking at the Late Night Trailhead and head to your left and the Old Spanish trail. You will cross over a dirt road used by many vehicles out here. Once you cross over the road, keep going and signs will appear on the ground that will provide direction to the trail and the Joshua Tree where all kinds of fun ducks are hanging. This is a popular mountain biking trail so watch for cyclists. I noticed this time that my previous ducks were gone. Apparently, this tree is monitored and if there are too many ducks, then they remove them. This doesn't stop people from hanging more. We brought along two new "Valentine" ducks to add to give the tree some love. Be sure to snap a pic of this delightful and unique site in the beauty of this area of Red Rock Canyon.

This is one of the off shoots from the Late Night Trailhead which is a trail not far from Red Rock. Gorgeous views but be sure you have good situational awareness if you're hiking because you'll be sharing the trail with bicyclists as well.

The original plan was to hike the Rubber Duck Trail Loop which is about 2 miles round trip. To do a longer hike we added the Mustang Loop which made the total distance about 7 miles. The route we took is to start on the Mustang Loop trail by heading west or left at the restrooms in the Late Night parking lot. The trail is fairly well marked. Follow the Mustang Loop trail markers and watch for the marker for the Rubber Duck trail. At the duck tree you can continue on and do a loop that will take you back to the parking lot or turn around at the tree for a slightly shorter return. The trails are shared among Hikers and Mountain Bikers. The over trail is flat with only about 450 feet of elevation change. Our pace was moderate and took 2 1/2 hours. We only encountered a few bikers and hikers and two jack rabbits along the entire hike. The duck Joshua tree has very few ducks as compared to several years ago.

I just did this trail today, finally. It is currently "closed" as far as the parking lot(but there's space off of the highway you can use instead). I assume restrooms are closed as well. To find this trail, if you are facing the restrooms, go right towards the Old Spanish trail and follow it back awhile. Eventually you will cross the gravel road onto an unmarked trail to the right. Follow that until you start to see signs for the duck trail. I measured this at about 1.7 miles round trip. It's complete sun, but fairly easy otherwise. It was pretty desolate, so don't go alone if that makes you uncomfortable. I didn't see anyone else until my way back.

After enjoying so many photos by fellow Yelpers we decided this was a must for an outdoor adventure. As most people, we used our iPhone maps, Google maps, and this automatically brought us up thru Red Rock into the scenic loop. After getting on the trail for awhile, some fellow hikers asked what trail we were looking for. We told them, and was quickly obliged with detailed instructions. So with that being said, we headed back like we were going towards Pahrump, took the exit for Late Night Trail Head. This was definitely the right way. We started to walk down the trail, was greeted by continuous hikers, and cyclists alike. The trail doesn't tell you exactly where to go until you get close to it. When you go across the gravel road, know your headed in the right direction. At that point there is a little turn off to the right, then you'll start to see signs that tell you Spanish Trail/ Ducky Trail. Once we arrived it was alot to take in. Baring in mind, people have removed the ducks over the years several times. There were 2 memorials there with ducks on the sites as well. Definitely be mindful on the trails, whether your cyclist or a hiker. As your sharing the path with everyone. I'd suggest adequate shoes and hydration. It is 2 miles or so round trip, you don't have to be in Olympic shape, but be prepared for physical activity. Def recommend- the scenery is beautiful Location Blue Diamond/ Late Night Trail Head. - there is parking, but it does get full.

Definitely a unique little hike, Rubber Duck Trail is a short trek that can easily be enjoyed by all ages and fitness types. Our dependable hiking guru, Norm K., recently showed us the Rubber Ducky tree which this trail is all about. The tale goes that there was a branch of this Joshua tree that overhung the trail used frequently by mountain bikers. Someone hung a rubber ducky from the said branch (which is no longer there) to remind bikers to "duck!" Since then, visitors from far and wide have brought rubber duckies to hang from the tree. If you're just interested in seeing the tree, park at the Late Night Trailhead off of SR 160 on the way to Pahrump. This was our first visit to this hiking area which is also very popular with mountain bikers. You start the hike to the tree on the trail that is to the right of the sign about the Old Spanish Trail. Follow this trail until you get to a dirt road (about half a mile), cross the road, and follow the trail on the other side of the road. You'll eventually see signs that point to the Rubber Ducky trail so just follow those until you get to the tree. We did this hike on the spur of the moment so we didn't have any rubber duckies with us, but there was a family at the tree who came prepared with ducks, string, and pens and they generously gave my husband and I a duck to hang. This whole hike is only a little over 2 miles round trip, but I would highly recommend spending more time on the Mustang Trail that this is a part of and enjoy the amazing views of Red Rock and the great outdoors.

I sure do. I've done three Love Hikes hikes over the last three years, Valley of Fire Intense twice and Red Rock Moderate once. I could see planning my next Las Vegas visit around doing two or three of their hikes. What makes Love Hikes so great? * Great guides who know all the trails like the backs of their hands, are listening to you and will find a route that works for you. When I asked for the intensity to be tuned up on the Intense hike - that's what I got. A thrilling and challenging experience with a guide who showed me how to do what I would have thought of as beyond me. And when I wanted a moderate scrambling experience, I got exactly that. * Owners, Roberta and Jacob, Las Vegas Natives, who deeply care that their guests have a great experience and will do anything they reasonably can to provide one. * The assurance that while the environment may be unfamiliar and challenging (middle of the desert) you'll be with well trained people who exactly what they are doing and who will make sure you have a great, and safe, experience. * Incredibly reasonable pricing for the beauty, thrills, challenge (if you choose a moderate or above hike), and incredible convenience. * Pro tip: If you love taking video (guilty!!) and are on a moderate or above hike, make sure you have a hat or body mount since the parts you'll want to video most will require using two hands. I was excited to complete this hike as I have decided to complete a hiking challenge for this year and this would be hike number one. We promptly met at 9:00am in the Red Springs parking lot and begin our ascent up this so called staircase. There really is no set trail or staircase at all but lots of climbing and scrambling over and through large rocks. You just have to go with someone who has done it before and will guide you up the safest route possible. Luckily my friends complete this hike annually. I wasn't sure that I could handle this climb, but turns out that I was much stronger that I thought. It is strenuous at times and the cardio workout is real, but the reward at the top is so worth it. The views are epic from viewing the entire Red Rock Canyon and seeing way out toward Mt. Potosi. In the other direction seeing through Brownstone Canyon up to Mt. Charleston Peak. This hike also includes some stunning views of our beautiful city. I can only imagine how pretty it would be up here at sunset, but never mind going down would be way to challenging. Though I was wearing the appropriate shoes and had a full bottle of water and walking sticks on me, I still felt like I wasn't really prepared for this trail, since I had my hands full and I did not have a backpack on me. Though I live in Henderson, making the 30+ minute drive out of the city to hike Late Night was definitely worth it! While it was windy overall, the temperature wasn't too hot or too cold to hike.
