If I didn't work near this area, I honestly would have never discovered Rubios Bakery, and that would've been a huge mistake because this place is amazing. This is not your regular everyday bakery. This is a true Central American bakery and food spot with so much culture, flavor, and heart behind it. What I love about this place is that they do way more than just bread and pastries. They also serve full dishes where you can build yourself a plate from all the guisos and fresh food they already have prepared. I've had both their breakfast and lunch here and everything has been consistently good every single time. Their breakfast is seriously underrated too. The yogurt smoothies, egg plates, pupusas in the morning, fresh coffee, and all the guisos are always on point. Even during times where I was trying to save money, I could still walk in, grab a couple pieces of bread and a small coffee for a really affordable price and leave happy. This place always hits no matter what you order. The atmosphere here is something special too. If you come early in the morning, you can really feel the culture and warmth in the place. The Christian music playing in the background, the smell of fresh bread, the morning rush, and the ladies working there all make it feel comforting and genuine. And if you're lucky enough to get helped by one of the older ladies, they'll give you that auntie or grandma type of energy that just makes the experience even better. Coming from a Mexican background myself, it's honestly beautiful getting to experience and appreciate Central American culture through a place like this. The baked items were just ok though I was a little surprised there were no guava items. I opted for a quesadilla, strawberry danish, and a Bavarian cream empanada and red beans and rice. The red beans and rice were very flavorful and comforting. I would comeback just for this. Service is a little confusing because the main register is between the bakery display and hot food items, and the queue wasn't clear to me. Decor is bright and colorful, and if I had more time I would have loved to sit at the outdoor patio. I went in to Rubio's since I live near by and was curious and I'm glad I did. The service is very friendly and attentive. At about 9:45am there were quite a few people enjoying breakfast which is always a good sign. The cases are split between bakery and savory. I obviously had to try something from each. From the savory side I chose the chicken tamale and from the sweet side a pan dulce. The chicken tamale looked a bit deconstructed since it is served without the husk but they give you a large bolillo roll so you can dip and, or, construct your own torta. Very flavorful and the chicken was moist and well cooked. I am not well versed in tamales so I can't speak to authenticity but I thought it was very tasty. The pan dulce was light and sweet with a slight crust which gives it that light sugary crunch. There is a small parking lot in front but it caters to a lot of businesses so it may be tough to navigate. You can find metered street parking on Pico which may be easier to get in and out of. read more

I was looking specifically for a carrot cake and when I called, they were so quick to help me and ask if I wanted slices or a whole cake and had it ready for when I arrived. When I went to pick it up, they were so friendly and kind. Marisa! who helped me over the phone also helped me when I got there and she was just so sweet. Fruit tart! Fruit Tart! Fruit Tart! I could not believe that I found a fruit tart cake that replaced Porto's fruit tart. The fruit was just as fresh and as juicy as the fruit on portos. But what took portos out of the top of my list, was the cream that the cake brought. It as moist, did not taste over the top sugary, and it was thick enough to stay in place when we cut it. I bought menudo and two sweet breads and I've had better at El torito. The menudo has a strange taste (it's loaded with meat) but the taste isn't great and lacks flavor. They gave me no condiments, so I had to cut up onion and cilantro at home. If I knew that's what it was going to taste like, I would have just bought a can of menudo. The bread (two conchas) were dry and bland. I was going to ask for a coffee but their coffee area looked closed, so I didn't want to bother (I can't imagine the coffee being great either so I don't regret it).
