So far I've been here three minutes and noticed the look of intolerance. I asked for a menu item and was told they don't have any right now. It will take 15 minutes to cook. When I suggested that I wait until the item was prepared I received a different look of disdain. When I mentioned the sign for a free torta I pointed it out to my friend and everyone looked at me simultaneously with a shocked look. Then I realized it's in Spanish and I wasn't supposed to be able to read that. I don't want it but still... Maybe one is an oversight but all four? I was also offered my free drink as an option. There food is NOT fresh. When I asked for breakfast they pointed at a plate that had food just sitting there for them to heat up so I said NVM. I ordered a tinga torta that was ALSO already prepared just sitting there in a box. I assume they heat it up in a microwave because only half of the torta was warm while the other half was freaking COLD!! I went back in to ask them to reheat it. None of their food looks fresh at all, it all looks prepared in the morning and just ready to heat up. I felt nauseous later. On the bright side, their bakery looks kinda good but didn't order any of it. Wouldn't go again. UPDATE: my stomach hurts & I have had diarrhea since last night which was the day I ate their food. mom has since told me she's been feeling nauseous as well. read more

I placed an order for 12 tamales de elote, was charged full price and received only 8 , on top of that the quality of food looked disgusting , they didn't look fresh, all soggy, and the husk wrap was off from most tamales, who ever prepped my order (Maria?) needs to learn how to provide quality service when prepping food to go and making sure the order is set. I called and the lady over the phone seemed non chalant about the situation and told me to go back , I explained I traveled all the way from Burbank and it was a waste of my time and gas , she still seemed non chalant so I told her I would need my money back , she said ok and hung up the phone , I came to drop them off and on top of that the same lady who provided my order was rude and told me to wait I told her I couldn't wait, she ignored me and had me stand on the side , she then questioned me what type of tamales I wanted like asada, I'm like I only wanted my order of 12 regular tamales and didn't receive my order correctly, and the presentation was disgusting, she said that normally they serve the tamales open but that if I wanted them wrapped she could've wrapped them for me, I've never heard of such a thing lol , tamales come wrapped in their husk , but I knew they were making excuses and seemed upset at me when in reality I should be upset for the distance traveled and money spent at first, she wanted to get me out of the line so she just gave me the cash no questions asked or apology , very rude customer service and cant apologize for their own mistake. I don't really have the need to check my orders before leaving anywhere as I rarely encounter restaurants messing up. If the staff was understanding of the situation and apologized I would've came back, but never coming back here again!!! The food here is great, the fact that there's even a bakery in mid city is AMAZING. However, the ladies that work there literally steer all the customers away. I walked in there was a family of 8 ALREADY ordering with another lady. I only came in for bread which is on the opposite side of the food. Every time I come for bread only I go to that side as it's a quick thing. I didn't need any extra food etc. There was 3 ladies, 1 as I mentioned helping the family of 8 the other one was putting stuff together and the one who told me I had to wait in a line of 8 people just to grab some bread kept insisting I go to that line. MIND you I've never done that, it was a 3 min thing for her to help. The way she spoke to me was rude ! I have been visiting and buying from rubio's bakery for many years and they have always had prices that are up there, but this time they took the cake, this weekend I went to buy 1 plate if food, the half of plate was $17 dollars. They had the nerve to tall if a PLATE for 17$ with no drink included. This place is good but not worth over pricing their product like that and then to get assisted with an attitude on top of everything? Oh no I don't recommend this place at all to anyone, unless you want to pay almost 20$ a plate with NOT drink, straight out highway robbery here. I know the economy is bad but is it really that bad you are charging $17 a plate, a plate that is halfway full WITH no drink. if you dont believe me I encourage you to go and get one of this plates of food. I can't say enough good things about this establishment. The first thing I noticed was how clean everything was. Gorgeous authentic decor. No dust. Extremely well kept Inside and out. Upon entering I was well greeted by what I would imagine was the owner or head guy but he was very friendly and helpful. Now to the food. I ordered the chorizo and egg breakfast sandwich and it was unreal. It's a family style restaurant so everything is laid out in a gorgeous display which is then made to order. They hand picked the chorizo from the display cabinet and then made my breakfast sandwich after I ordered. While I was waiting I got a papaya and mango juice and it was perfect. Not too sweet. And not over iced. But cold and refreshing. I also had to order a chicken tika sandwich to go for later because it looked so delicious. He was mindful to ask if I was eating it now or later so he can prepare it to go or heat it up right away. That was a nice foresight and I appreciated the extra care to my order. The food is delicious! Today, my husband and I came all the way from Torrance to have it again. Rice, beans, chicken dishes, beef dishes, Yuka and sweet bakery treats to go with. The people serving us were very friendly and offering samples to make sure I was making a tasty choice. The bakery section looked very tasty; I wanted everything behind that glass. I genuinely love this place it's been me and my fathers favorite place to eat over the years, they're food is amazing most of the time! It's always super clean. When you go in normally it should be 2 lines one for the bakery one for the food, it's always been like this but all of a sudden the new staff is horrible we've been customers for years and the staff hasn't been bad until now. Especially the lady with lots of hair in the front she always has it up, has tattoos on her fingers. She is extremely rude all the ladies have a horrible attitude, it's so sad to see this because the owners are super sweet and so are their children. I called in an order for 2 soups to pick up, got there and the lady with lots of hair had thrown them away without asking who it was for. I had to wait 1 hour and finally got home to try it with my father and it tastes absolutely disgusting no flavor, random stuff in it like onion and bell pepper. I had their food a few times and it wasn't bad, but my last experience was totally disgusting. I was eating and after 2 bites i saw something that looked like it had legs, the same colour of the black beans. When i moved it aside on the plate to examine it, it was a cooked COCKROACH!!! It messed up my whole appetite. Then i went to the cashier to show her, she didn't even APOLOGIZE for what happened. Then she told the cook and he didn't say anything either nor did he seem to care. Serendipity brought me to this little gem. Beautiful family owned restaurant and bakery with a European interior. I selected my items which included their fruit tart and special iced coffee which tastes like Häagen-Dazs ice cream. I went to pay using my American Express card which is shown on their window as an excepted form of payment. They didn't want to use the card and asked if I had something else but I had nothing else. He told me not to worry about it, to pay next time I came !!!!! I hesitated, reluctant to except something without payment first. He insisted and I told him I loved him, and the baker, a female said she loved me too. The price was seven dollars and I had a $10 gift card from Ralph's. I gave it to them. What a joyful experience. A foodie's dream. Rubio's shines in it's cooked foods. Everything is soo incredibly fresh, that you will never want to eat prepared food at Whole Foods ever again. The hilarious thing is that every time I go I get charged a different price for my food. Sometimes 5.50, sometimes 6, sometimes 8 bucks. Not sure I get their pricing system yet but I don't care. : ) When it comes to their Mexican pastries and desserts, they're nothing special.
