If Yelp is really about honest reviews from regular people then I find it hard to believe that this place is rated as high as it is. In short... Hour massage is really 50 minutes, even when you do arrive 20minutes before your appointment. The actual massage was good but unfortunately that was not enough. Staff is more interested in you buying their supplements and everything else under their roof. Customer service is mediocre. They act like they're doing YOU a favor by allowing you to come into their business. When I mentioned my massage was not the full hour as paid for, I was given the " you're wrong we're right" attitude. I do have to give them kuddos for having a very lovely looking space. It's gorgeous and very well designed and it shows but as my momma always had said " Looks will only get you so far" I will NEVER return here again. read more

I came here with a groupon for a "relax and glow" facial and it was DIVINE. I came in and everyone was so happy and calm and nice. I had hot tea and a card reading for my chakra.. and that was such a special touch. It really was the right card for me and the spray smelled beautiful. Was a great start. The facial itself was one of the BEST I have ever had. Totally relaxing with a neck and shoulder massage, and the crystal eye treatment.. I like that they don't do extractions too. Makes it that much more relaxing. Neisha was very gentle and had wonderful massage skills too. It was perfect. I am hesitant to go back only because of the full price for this facial... especially in the suggested 4-6 week period, as that can easily get very expensive. I like the concept of the place, perhaps if I had services from different staff I would feel different. First, when I got my haircut from Julia, I told her I wanted my hair long enough to pull back. The after going on about how all the girls are getting Katie Holmes hair and I told here I didn't like her hair. I walked out looking like Katie Holmes. It took me a year to let it grow out and I did not get one compliment from anyone on my new short hair do, which I never have. The I tried Philip for a numerology reading and he was pretty on the money but thought he was a little too hard on me. Didn't really feel that great afterwards. Was looking for someone i could go back again and give me business too but I'll pass and keep looking. But nice location nice store and products. read more

This is based on the inn part of The Ruby Room. I loved the shower and the bathroom was very clean. I was disappointed that it was so tiny and not very quiet. Our room was situated directly above the yoga studio, so we were awake every morning at 8 a.m. with loud music. And, since there were wood floors, we could hear the people walking above us. In addition, you will get no room service - as far as bedding and towels changed. At $175 for a Saturday night, I feel like you should get a little more service. On the plus side, very centrally located - near to bars, restaurants, parks and public transportation. read more

Everything about my experience was wonderful....making the appt, the vibe when I arrived, the ambience of the spa area, the comforting smells, the hospitality, etc. And I absolutely love Allie! Stayed at the Ruby for a weekend in December. I took a shower before bed. After about 4-5 minutes - just enough time to get soaped up and put conditioner in my hair - the water turned icy cold. I shut it off, waited a few minutes, tried again.... uh uh. Still ice cold. Since there is no service after around 7pm, the next morning I asked at the front desk and was told "Oh, you are in 4B? Right, that happens all the time. You just need to flip the circuit breaker". Really??? The nice housekeeping lady came up and showed me (the guest!) which breaker to flip next time, and, sure enough, the next night the same thing happened. Five minutes into a shower, the water turned ice cold. Once rinsed, dried, and freezing, I flipped the breaker myself. When I complained at the desk the next day I was told the owner/manager would get in touch with me right away, but that was several days ago and no call. By the way - this is not a Bed & Breakfast, just a Bed, as they do not offer anything besides (questionable) lodging. Other things to note: there was a very loud, strange, metallic thunk which occurred in the bathroom periodically all night long, just loud enough to wake a person up every time; the two curtain rods shared one pair of finials, so when the guest tries to pull the flimsy curtains to the edge to prevent the 5am sun from poking through, the rods fell off the holders; and the room was rather dusty, there was hair from a previous guest on the bed, and the upholstered bench was dirty. By far the BEST FACIAL anywhere, and if you're serious about beautiful skin see PAUL! I got a facial with Paul about 6 months ago and have continued to go back monthly! I have struggled with acne my entire life and was over all of the harsh prescriptions I had been using for years. Paul put me on a program that includes seeing him once and month and I can honestly say my skin looks great and consistently gets better and better. Made it back to Ruby Room after several months of withdrawals - this time for color and massage. What can I say about Ruby Room that I haven't said before - and now with it's remodeled look - even more fabulous. I went to get my roots touched up as I was in bad need. Ruby Room uses Schwarkopf color -which produces some beautiful rich colors. I was glad because thats the color that was in my hair presently. I was greeted as soon as I walked in. I checked and was offered water and tea and told Amber would be with me soon. (I was 15 minutes early for my appointment) Amber was a blast - she took the time to touch my hair and really look at the color already on my head. She asked me what color was I trying to achieve - the violet brown i had or a more richer color. I decided against the violet because it washes out of my originally blond hair and that the richer color would deposit better. She said she would come up with a color that would be fab and I said go for it. I felt at ease with her and her expertise immediately. So I sat while my hair processed and enjoyed looking around at all the goodies for sale. She also did a gloss on my ends to ensure continuous color with my touch up. End result = super fabulous rich color that is to die for. Thank you Amber! I will be back!! (I work in a salon too -and can get my color done for free, but am happy to pay for ) read more

I am leaving a second review for the Ruby Room after I received one of their specialized services. Last week, I had a chakra massage with Annie, and it was truly an uplifting experience. She was professional and straightforward about the chakra massage. I was able to tell her about some of the issues troubling me that day, why I had trouble sleeping, and other things. Annie knew just areas to focus on in order to relieve my anxiety and force the negative energy out of me. I would honestly return for another massage with Annie, she was very open and easy to talk to. Overall it was such A great experience! read more

Listen up kiddies. I have read the reviews and most complaints are about price and the people trying to upsell. Guess what? That is their job! People seem to forget that quality matters. I work as a barista and CHOOSE to splurge on myself here. The experience is worth the price. I have frequented this place quite a bit (massage, acupuncture, hair cuts and color) and all were stellar. Yes they tried to sell me hair products but EVERY salon does that. The difference here is the people care about you. Toni is wonderful for a cut. I came in after getting my hair cut at Art & Science because they apparently do curly hair well, wrong! ( there was actually another woman who was getting her hair recut due to the same experience) I needed some layers added to my triangle "lob" and my bags fixed. I swear Toni cut maybe 3-4 grams of weight out and voila, beautiful curly hair without the bulk. She was perfectly friendly and didn't push anything on me. Natalia for acupuncture was fantastic as well. I had hurt my back moving and my massage therapist had recommended that I have it before to open my muscles. Natalia came in and did her magic and within 5 minutes I was able to take a full breath without my back hurting. The massage was awesome by Kimberlyn but it was her last day. I will continue to come back for everything. I definitely need to see Melanie for an energy reading because once you meet her you know she is special and amazing. read more

I was able to book a prenatal massage the same day I called in--which was great, since I was looking for some immediate relief at 38 weeks. My massage therapist was Aubrey, and she was AMAZING!!! The massage was so relaxing, and I could tell she knew what she was doing. She even suggested certain exercises that I could do to relieve some of the back pain I have been having. Despite having to hear an employee on their phone taking smack about their life and spewing negativity in a "spa" environment I decided to give this a chance. Awful experience! First, its hardly private in the upstairs massage area having curtains instead of walls between you and other people. Just waiting for a weirdo to pull the curtain back and peek right? Second, the colonics is not at all beneficial and it is VERY painful. I can say, after having a child, its reminiscent of labor and a sharp object up your ass and it stays that way the entire time. I also was constipated for 4 days AFTER struggling to pass rock hard pellets of crap that the turbo jet of water compacted up my a$$. Literally, it was so painful I kept sweating and I thought I was going to vomit. I leeked water out my a$$ off and on for hours after that and had to wear a pad. My stomach stayed distended with several pounds of water weight and this is day 5. This is a rip off and by no means medical. I just hope I don't have some disease or something now. RUN AWAY! These people should be ashamed of themselves. CLEARLY some of these reviewers must be friends of the people who "work" their or the people who "work" their themselves. read more

i go to yoga at the ruby room. i primarily go to tina's classes, which are usually tuesdays and thursdays. i think she does a great job for a variety of reasons: -she puts you and your priorities at the center of each class and tailors each class to what you want to achieve. this is different from a lot of other places i've been, which can rush you through a series of positions, some of which you're not into. -she knows what she's doing and you always feel like you're in capable hands. -she puts a big emphasis on breathing and introspection. i particularly like this because it helps me put yoga into perspective: you do it to feel good about life. every time i've come out of a yoga session with tina i've felt 10 times better than when i went in. it's pretty much that simple. i cannot imagine spending $100 on a massage when a $15 session at this place makes you feel exponentially better. in short, i wouldn't hesitate to recommend her classes to anybody. read more

The location is great--very close to the subway (blue line--the only one that goes to the airport). right across the street there is a great bakery (Alliance), within 5 minutes walking there is a wonderful restaurant that opens early & closes late (BIG & little's), and the Wicker Park neighborhood is very chill, great for walking and wandering around. Today I tried out the spa services and had a colonic with Laura. It was one of the best services I have received to date. She was genuine and kind, attentive and very knowledgeable. She walked me through the process and provided additional applicable information that I could use to improve my health and wellness on a regular basis. I also like that she'll come around & correct a pose for you if you are out of alignment (I've taken classes where the instructors are not as focused on the students). I LOVE this place! After trying a few other spa places around the city, I finally found this wonderful, calming, friendly, professional place. I have been going several times a year for the past four years. Each time is great! Walking in, you are greeted with friendly people. It's a great atmosphere to be in. I have had a few massages where they really take the time to find out where you are tense. You won't receive a generic massage here- it's catered to your body. I have had a facial that was also excellent- just like the massage, it's personalized to your skin. I have also come here for what could be the most painful and uncomfortable experiences- bikini and brazilians... ouch, right? weird, right? NOPE! not here! Amy and Karma are so great- professional but friendly, kind and understanding. It's almost like you are out for coffee with a friend, with a few uncomfortable moments mixed in. And they don't use those awful strips here- it's a hot wax! LESS PAIN! Pricey but not any more so than any other place. Definitely worth the price read more

The young lady working Sunday Nov. 6 around 1pm not only knew nothing about the Susan Posnick makeup line, but she made things up that I later found out was completely false as I poked around on my own trying to figure out how each applicator worked and exactly what each product was. This is a review for the hotel portion only. My husband and I like quirky places, and Ruby Room fit the bill. We were in Chicago for one night to see a concert and wanted a place within walking distance of the venue (the Empty Bottle) so we wouldn't have to worry about parking for the show. What we did have to worry about was parking for the hotel, because you can't park on Division Street overnight, but we called the hotel in advance and they told us to park on Wood or Haddon, which worked. We are avid walkers and have no problem climbing stairs, but someone with mobility issues probably wants to avoid the Ruby Room with its narrow twisting staircase. Now that this caveat is out of the way, on to the good stuff-- the red-carpeted stairs with the wooden balustrade were charming and had a great sense of atmosphere. Our room (Suite 3B) was also charming and nicely appointed (though there were two spots on the upholstery of the chaise longue), with nice mood lighting and a general air of relaxation. We made use of the steam shower, which was interesting once we got past the feeling of being suffocated by the steam! We also used the little kitchenette on the third floor to make ourselves tea; we did not use the garden area because it was raining. The bed was great. We slept like the dead and had no issues with noise until about 8:30 in the morning; there was construction going on in Division Street nearby. Check-out is 11 AM but we asked in advance about a noon checkout and the staff were fine with it. I'm not the sort to patronize the spa end of Ruby Room's services, but the hotel end pleased us; really it was like an offbeat urban B&B without the breakfast. read more

I go to the Ruby Room for bikini waxing. Amy is amazing! She is very gentle. It barely hurts and I'm pretty sensitive. Also, the natural products are easy on the skin. My hair grew back thin, light, slowly and there was no itching, bruising or ingrown hairs. Amy's also really fun and cool, which makes the time pass. I'm a big fan!!!! The only downside is that it's a little expensive. But the extra money is worth the great customer service and talented staff. read more

I enjoyed my conversation with her and was impressed with how little the whole thing hurt. I found out about Ruby Room on one of these online discussion boards yesterday, and was blown away! I went in for colon hydrotherapy, but decided to also get a massage. When I walked in I was struck by the beautiful eclectic art, clean facilities, expanse and size of the spa, and friendly intuitive staff. Honestly the most contemporary chillest spa experience I've ever had. I got a massage from Stephanie, and she worked my tense shoulders for the entire hour. Non of that entire body-massage crap that leaves you wanting more in the areas you truly need. Her pressure was PERFECT from the second she began. Then I got colon hydrotherapy from Neysa. She talked me through my first-time, what i would expect and feel. It wasn't bad at all by the way. But having her by my side in the dim-lit room made me feel at ease. I even got an anatomy lesson and hug to boot! Even the receptionist, Victoria (i think was her name) was super sweet and told me about the cool treatments she has had such as: ear-waxing -- which i am going to be going into in the near future. If you don't want to get serviced they have amazing scents, make-ups, jewelry, bags, and art. I highly recommend! read more

We had our appointments with Neysa and and she was very good at making us feel comfortable and relaxed throughout the process. She was very funny, warm and personable throughout the entire experience and made sure to involve you in the process by educating you as to what was happening, what to avoid eating, etc. We would definitely recommend going here and would recommend Neysa. read more

I don't use Ruby Room as my regular salon or spa, but as a special girls day out for massages and facials. There spa treatments are a bit on the pricey side. I am always happy with staff and have received great massages from Gladys over the years. My friend and I have to take turns with who gets to book her. She has a great technique and is very intuitive. The last time, Gladys wasn't available and I was booked 90 minute massage with James. I was very happy with his technique, but he talked the entire time. I came for relaxtion and quite. While he made my body feel better, I didn't get the full benefit I came looking for. read more
