Brunch at Ruby Sunshine WOW. Worth the wait. About a 30-minute wait, but the vibe was comfortable, so it didn't feel like a chore. Catfish and grits were cooked perfectly. We tried two eggs benedict options both solid. The candy bacon? Absolute winner. French toast bites... just okay, nothing to brag about. Pancakes were good, and those biscuits with cinnamon butter don't skip that. Biscuits and gravy were good, just not my thing but my sister enjoyed them. Happy to report that my experience at the Ruby Sunshine location on East Bay was amazing! It was night and day from my experience at the other location in West Ashley. We were immediately greeted by the staff as soon as we walked in the door. All the staff was friendly and welcoming! We were quickly seated without reservations. We ordered the classic beignets to start and it came out hot and fresh topped with powdered sugar. For brunch, I got the skinny florentine omelet with side salad. My husband got the one tomato two tomato benny. Both our orders came out hot and fresh! My omelet was fluffy and yummy! The biscuit was so flaky and tender. Not hard as a rock, like we got at the other location. My husband's benny was equally as good. They poached the eggs perfectly, and his biscuit was nice and soft and full of flavor. The restaurant was clean and well organized. They even have an area towards the back for private dining for a large party and they have a cute outdoor courtyard with seating as well. Wow ... great brunch!! Easily walkable from our cruise ship docked only a couple blocks away. Very busy there ... so good thing we made a reservation (thanks Yelp!) for our large party of 8, but still had to wait a few minutes for them to setup. Although, other walk-ins had to wait longer. We were seated in the indoor area, as the outdoor space was quite nice but didn't seem to have seating for all of us. Extensive brunch menu and everything was just soooo good including the drinks! Although some in our party thought the lavender was a bit strong in the mimosa sampler. There's also a seasonal menu worth trying too. This place was cute and convenient to our hotel. The menu looked great and I really loved what I ended up choosing. I also enjoyed tastes of my husband's pancake and biscuit with the brown sugar butter. They seemed severely understaffed. We had a 25 minute wait for a table, a when we were seated the place seemed empty. The poor server seemed harried and confused. I think the staff they did have were doing the best they could- friendly, attentive, and the food exceeded expectations. But kind of a weird vibe to walk into on a beautiful morning. read more

My daughter and I met up with our sister friends for brunch today as a send off to one of them leaving to serve our country overseas soon. We'd all read the reviews and the menus before arriving. We found great street parking and walked less the 5 minutes to get to the restaurant. There's ì outside seating in front and out back. The entrance is wheelchair accessible (added plus)! We waited a couple minutes before being seated which was totally fine. They do have a bar with seating and the restaurant itself is amazingly spacious! We were seated and still had a sense of intimacy to be able to laugh and girl talk just as much as we wanted (needed)! I asked our awesome server about their glute free menu and my flabbers were gasted to see an actual menu JUST for us that gluten hates! And to the disapproval of my grown daughter, I almost squeaked. The description of the restaurant said Nola inspired so of course my daughter ordered beignets; she enjoyed them and tried not to compare them to that other place in Nola, lol. I loved the decor and colors used throughout. I ordered French toast (gluten-free of course) with a side of scrambled eggs and chicken sausage. Our server was super helpful as well as knowledgeable about the menu, and sweet as she could be. We were so surprised that the restaurant wasn't filled! We just needed a quick small bite before our food tasting tour later today. We both ordered BLTs which were delicious with fried green tomatoes on them. The fries are seasoned well also. Service seemed a little slow so bring your conversation. Still all was well and music is playing at a polite volume. Joyce was the hardest working server helping ALL tables. I try to review from the top down. I try to give fives. I ate at Ruby's yesterday and again, today. I don't think it was their weekend. Hmmm. Yesterday, the food was served promptly. It was hot. I ordered something that had battered fried chicken pieces and squares of french toast. The chicken was fried, but the french toast was fried, too. Maybe it wasn't. Either way the bread was pretty greasy. Low marks there. Our server was bad. She neglected to bring drinks after they were asked for. She began taking my plate while asking me if I was done. When it came time to check out she handed the machine to my friend WHILE HE WAS TALKING and then spoke over him with the instructions. We were both astonished. She wasn't that busy. Today I arrived early. Jarod, our server was AMAZING. I ordered an espresso and a Costa Rican breakfast dish. The espresso came to the table barely warm. I asked Jarod if he would have it warmed up and, to my surprise, he brought out a fresh, hot cup. Well done, Jared. The meal, while delicious, also wasn't hot. A notch above Waffle House & IHOP. But just barely a notch, and in a city full of stand-out local restaurants, why waste the calories on the equivalent of a breakfast Chili's? The service was slow and mediocre, delivered by a server who literally didn't crack a smile or bother to be pleasant to us until it was time for her to hold our her electronic card reader for a tip. It's a breakfast place that we were told doesn't serve decaf coffee. The food was pretty lackluster. It's certainly affordable for downtown Charleston, but I'd rather pay a few dollars more and enjoy a good meal and good service. You are give a large variety of ingredients to choose from.There biscuits are so good, I wished I had ordered another one. The breakfast potatoes are packed full of flavor. I love the Ruby Slipper in NOLA so it was a no brainer to go to Ruby Sunshine while I was biding time to catch a flight home. I wish this was the same experience but it was not. The candied French toast was smothered in brown sugar versus baked, I had to scrape it off to eat it. The classic French toast was ok but the Banana Foster was soaked in the sauce that my daughter had a hard time eating. I will say, service is excellent. I just wished the food matched. read more

My 2 girlfriends and I went for breakfast last week while on vacation. We had heard the hype and expected a great experience. But unfortunately that did not happen. After we were seated I was looking around and saw that the restaurant is so dirty. The baseboards are covered with grime and coffee spills, the door to the kitchen had grease stains on the window and the small fridge under the counter facing us was covered with greasy finger prints. I was so surprised. We ordered and when my chicken sandwich came it was just a dry bun pickle and chicken. I asked our waitress if there was something else besides a dry bun and she said "oh yeah the Aioli" and brought it. My friend ordered a Latte that did not arrive and she told the waitress to cancel it mid meal. In the middle of the meal our waitress disappeared. She left the building, went outside because there was something going on in the parking lot. She never returned. When we decided to waive someone down to get our check they were overwhelmed. There were 3 other table that wanted their checks too. Oh and about that time the Latte that was cancelled showed up. I can't believe the restaurant can be so dirty, if they can't even see that the white baseboards are covered in grime I wonder how dirty the kitchen is. The restaurant is beautiful and the atmosphere is great. The servers were also amazing. I was able to try a lot of different dishes but my favorite was the chicken st Charles and the appetizers of beignets, loaded tots and French toast bites. The loaded tots were a pleasant surprise, it's drenched in sauce and although it looked weird, it tasted wonderful. I did not really enjoy the shrimp and grits the sauce had a weird taste for me but it's worth a try if you want to have a shrimp and grits with a sweeter take to it. The chicken and toast bites were also weird. Although the toast bites as an appetizer were great the sauce they use for the chicken and toast bites was too tangy for me and the spiciness did not translate well into the toast bites for me. read more

Went there for breakfast as I have driven by it for quite a while. We started with beignets, they were just ok, a little too heavy and not enough sugar. Wife had the migas which she loved. I had an omelette with biscuit and potatoes as well as a pancake. Omelette was nice and fluffy, very good. Potatoes were like most potatoes in the south, ok, though these were seasoned nicely, would love to find some jersey breakfast potatoes down here. Food was good my avocado toast was exactly how it should be and had the pickled onion on top which is the perfect type of top with capers.
