Went there for breakfast as I have driven by it for quite a while. We started with beignets, they were just ok, a little too heavy and not enough sugar. Wife had the migas which she loved. I had an omelette with biscuit and potatoes as well as a pancake. Omelette was nice and fluffy, very good. Potatoes were like most potatoes in the south, ok, though these were seasoned nicely, would love to find some jersey breakfast potatoes down here. My 2 girlfriends and I went for breakfast last week while on vacation. We had heard the hype and expected a great experience. But unfortunately that did not happen. After we were seated I was looking around and saw that the restaurant is so dirty. The baseboards are covered with grime and coffee spills, the door to the kitchen had grease stains on the window and the small fridge under the counter facing us was covered with greasy finger prints. I was so surprised. We ordered and when my chicken sandwich came it was just a dry bun pickle and chicken. I asked our waitress if there was something else besides a dry bun and she said "oh yeah the Aioli" and brought it. My friend ordered a Latte that did not arrive and she told the waitress to cancel it mid meal. In the middle of the meal our waitress disappeared. She left the building, went outside because there was something going on in the parking lot. She never returned. When we decided to waive someone down to get our check they were overwhelmed. There were 3 other table that wanted their checks too. Oh and about that time the Latte that was cancelled showed up. I can't believe the restaurant can be so dirty, if they can't even see that the white baseboards are covered in grime I wonder how dirty the kitchen is. I tried Ruby Sunshine for the first time on my birthday and it delivered! The restaurant lay out was open and bright and it wasn't very busy during the time we were there. I had the peacemaker, mix and match two of their Benedict and I went with smoked salmon and chicken st. Charles. It was so good! The poached egg was cooked perfectly and the smoked salmon was delicious. The fried chicken was crunchy and cooked perfectly. My friend had biscuit and gravy with add on fried chicken. And other friend had 2 eggs, grits, biscuit, and cinnamon swirl pancake. Everyone happy with their food and endless coffee. Go early because Ruby Sunshine (seemingly, like every other restaurant in Charleston) gets utterly rammed during prime brunching hours. We had a scheduled walking tour on a late January Sunday morning that kicked off a few blocks south of here, so we rolled in around 8:00am and observed that several other tables were already seated. By the time we finished our meal and headed out around 9:00am, it was already buzzing. You snooze, you lose! I think the best part was the friendly conversation with our server, who -- like pretty much every other service industry person we met during our long weekend here -- was originally from the northeast. It wasn't packed during our visit, but she maintained the perfect amount of attention and banter without being helicopter-y or completely MIA. Ruby Sunshine's food was also fabulous. Be warned -- the portions are quite extreme, in a pleasant way. We ordered a plate of biscuits and gravy with the fried chicken add-on to share and it was easily a full and satisfying meal for two. I can't imagine anyone polishing off the dish by themselves. The unexpected bonus was being offered a refill of coffee to go. Yes, please! Who even does that?! It was a delightful surprise and kept us fueled for our traipse around Charleston's alleys and hidden passages later that morning. read more

The coffee & food were both delicious (I tried the creamy vanilla spiced latte & the biscuits & gravy with fried green tomatoes). This place is famous for their biscuits, and I can see why! The only downside is while the service is very friendly, it is also very slow. It's a great place for a leisurely brunch, but don't expect anything to come quickly. First, I'm not accustomed to southern food so this critique may just reflect that. I ordered the two tomatoes Benedict. It's on a biscuit half instead of an english muffin. I found the biscuit to taste heavy and almost stale. The hollandaise sauce was more orangey in color and tasted off. On the positive side, the eggs were perfectly poached. This meal comes with a side salad, heavy with vinegrette dressing. The server advised they could not substitute potatoes. Worst brunch experience I have ever experienced in my 20yrs of traveling! Wasted 2hrs of my life for ICE COLD Scrambled eggs that weren't even anything great, ICE COLD grits, terrible service and a waste of $80.00! I will never ever ever return and I will be sure all my customers at THE WILLCOX in SC knows how awful our experience was at RUBY SUNSHINE and recommend them to never waste their time or money on a place that took total advantage of their customers when they clearly knew they were having either a bad day or extremely understaffed and refused to be honest to their customers causing them to wait 30-40 mins before being seated and then another 20 mins before being greeted at your table, another 10 mins before getting half hour tables drinks and having to ask 10-15mins for the rest, never being checked on after we got our foods to see if we needed refills, hot coffee, if our food was okay. NOTHING. Not even our check which I had to ask for and then when asked how everything went they could care less that our experience was awful! Didn't offer to comp anything, didn't offer drinks to go, didn't offer to remake anything.. didn't give two shit other than making sure I paid my $80.00 bill for shitty ass FOOD! Never again also after reading reviews and seeing the response from what I believe is the owner on Google reviews I should of known they only care about money and not their actual customers because whenever someone wrote a negative review they will response back that the customer is making up a story to make them look bad when I literally had the same experience as them.. long wait, cold food, barely acknowledged, never checked on or asked if we needed anything. Didn't receive all our order, waited 40 mins to be seated in an empty dining hall full of dirty tables, no staff or management to help the one staff doing it all with the cook and bartender, didn't get half our drinks until one of my family members went and asked for it and then still had to wait 10 mins before receiving it. Waited 20 mins before anyone even came to the table to ask what we wanted to eat or drink. Then only returned with our COLD FOOD, left and never came back till we requested our check! I wish I never even paid my bill because it was the worst experience I have ever had at a brunch style restaurant! Not to mention I grew up in the service industry and have done it most of mh life including most my siblings and other family members at 4-5star establishments we understand having a bad day but whenever that happens you usually will offer to comp the bill, take something off the bill, give a discount for the inconvenience or awful experience, ask if we wanted something remade or drinks to go! This place did none of that but we're happy to quickly run the bill with the machine to pay for my shitty ass meal that cost me $80.00. I'm just glad I'll be able to warn all my customers, staff and guest that stay at the WILLCOX in SC to never ever give the RUBY Sunshine their time or money. read more

French toast bites - okay. Wish they weren't as deep fried, because I love the typical soft texture of French toast and some of the French toast flavor was lost in the deep fried. It relies heavily on the cream and praline sauce to make it good. Mimosa flight - do not recommend. The juices they mixed them with are not very complimentary to the sparkling wine. My favorite (and the only one I actually liked) was the Pineapple Peach Bellini. Service was somewhat slow given they were past the lunch rush. But the place is big and I suspect our waitress had multiple sections. She was even bussing her own tables and making her own drinks behind the bar‍. Shame on management for not giving her more support. Then again, it seems people are having a hard time finding good staff these days. :( The food entrees were their saving grace, though! I mean the flavors were good and the portions were great! I recommend the Chicken St. Charles and the Pancakes! Also the Ruby Mimosa is okay as well. My wife and I stopped in for a quick breakfast before leaving town. We were greeted and seated quickly by the friendly and courteous staff. Our orders were taken and prepared quickly. I had the three pigs omelette and my wife had the southern breakfast. The grits were amazing, I only wish I had a larger serving. The omelette was chocked full of meat and very well prepared. The restaurant was clean and had a modern, upbeat vibe dominated by a large bar as you first enter the building. I visited this establishment on Saturday, February 21st to celebrate my mother's 77th birthday. I made reservations in advance through the restaurant's website. Because the reservation system limited the number of guests per booking, I made three separate reservations to accommodate our party of 25, with three different people listed on the reservations. The week prior to our visit, I called the restaurant multiple times attempting to speak with someone to confirm that our party could be accommodated. I was unable to reach anyone. When we arrived on Saturday, the restaurant was nearly empty, with staff standing idle. After waiting, we were finally greeted by the host. I explained that we had reservations--one under my name for 12 guests--and that the remaining members of our party were arriving behind us. We arrived together on a party bus, so our entire group was present. The host located two of the three reservations but could not find the third. At that point, a manager came out. Unfortunately, I did not get his name. His demeanor immediately became aggressive and confrontational once he realized the size of our party. We are an African American family, and based on his behavior, I strongly believe this played a role in how we were treated. The manager stated that he could seat us but complained that we would "jam up" his kitchen and servers--speaking to us as though we were not paying customers. His tone was condescending, dismissive, and disrespectful. When my mother, a 77-year-old woman celebrating her birthday, attempted to speak with him, he remained unapologetic and clearly did not want to serve us. As a result, we left. The restaurant lost our business, and we were thankfully welcomed and accommodated by another establishment that treated us with respect. It is deeply disappointing that my family--and especially my children--had to experience what felt like blatant discrimination. This is not an experience anyone should have while visiting Charleston. That is why this review is being posted. We also have video footage of this interaction, and we will be sharing it. This is a solid breakfast spot. It was right down the street from our hotel. It seems like the wait times can really vary. We went early Sunday morning and was told it would be a 30 minute wait. We took a walk to the water front while we waited. They keep you updated very well with texts letting you know your place in line. Once we were close to being #1 in line we went back to the restaurant. They have a lot of space here and seems like breakfast can get pretty busy on the weekends. This weekend they did seem to be understaffed and the server was a bit hurried. Their menu has a ton of delicious looking items. I settled on the farmers breakfast with an iced coffee. The food came out pretty quick but my order seemed to be confused with the table next to us. My wife really enjoyed her avocado toast. It didn't take long at all to get my order corrected and all the food tasted great. This place isn't amazing but it gets the job done and its location is close to a lot of the popular hotels and scenic things to see while you wait. read more
