The Black Door Cafe is a lil cafe located inside the Mills House Hotel. I came here looking for a quick spot with wifi and to grab lunch (+ a matcha, of course). It was easy to find and there was seating both outside and inside the hotel. There was able seating and very easy to put in an order at the register. I tried out one of their seasonal specials- the matcha breeze which had matcha, coconut water, pineapple-passionfruit cold foam, served iced. I also got a little pastry. Both weren't too great unfortunately so I ended up tossing both. The matcha was too sweet and the flavors didn't really compliment each other. Not an ideal spot for matcha. This is right inside the Mill's house hotel. It has some options for outdoor and indoor seating. My go to is their cortado and iced lattes. The staff are always so friendly and they usually have some type of special running. They also have gelato so I also enjoy an affogato here as well. They offer some fun local snacks and other items. This little coffee shop is located inside Mills House Hilton hotel. People at the counter are friendly, they take your order quickly and you pick it up at the counter. I ordered their coffee that was on special - Banana bread latte - it was delish, creamy with just a hint of banana bread and cinnamon and perfect sweetness, even had a little coffee art done in milk foam. I also tried their chocolate croissant and while it was huge and very delicious looking unfortunately it was kinda old not crispy or flaky at all, it was served cold, probably leftover from previous day and chewy so big disappointment! Stopped in here on a walk in Charleston. It's a little cafe located in the lobby of a hotel. Had a long line the entire time we were here. They had a ton of items in line that looked yum, like mini cheese board plates and a ton of packaged drinks. The tables were pretty dirty but we wiped them off ourselves with napkins. I arrived pretty early in the morning and they were already out of several menu options. I settled for a buttered croissant, which was huge and could easily be split between two people. I asked that it be warmed and it could have stood a few more seconds in the toaster/microwave. My latte was just okay as the syrup and/or sauce options weren't distinguishable. About the best thing about my experience was the ambiance. The cafe itself is inside a hotel in downtown Charleston. It's cute with kind of a modern/traditional design style. There's a fireplace, which I imagine if it works, would be cool during cooler months. If you're staying at the hotel, it's a convenient stop, but I'd probably pursue other options if not. read more

We had eaten brunch around the corner and the iced tea I got wasn't cuttin' it on the caffeine so I did a little search on Yelp and found The Black Door Cafe in the hotel across the street. My husband idled the car in the alley and I ran in for a couple of cold brews. The hotel/coffee shop entrance is absolutely beautiful. Love that color pink, love the big dog statues, the delightful balloon arch around the door, the huge arched glass windows, etc. The interior of the cafe is a matte black but it doesn't feel dark or cold. It's got great lighting in all the nooks and crannies and shelving, and neutral seating to lighten that area. The cold brew we had was SO good. Very welcome on such a sweltering day. My only regret is we didn't come in and spend more time hanging out in their fantastic space. Next time! read more

I wouldn't come here again unfortunately. As I was ordering the cashier/barista was cutting me off trying to rush the order. She huffed when I continued to order. There was maybe 1 other guest in line so it didn't even feel necessary. There's a high sense of urgency where I live and I never feel rushed that way. Nice little coffee shop tucked away inside The Mills House. My friend and I decided to have coffee after dining at the glorious Iron Rose. The Black Door serves a variety of teas as well as coffee, a few novelties, chocolate, and also a few Charleston staples such as Benne wafers and praline pecans. The have a few quick bites to fill you up for your day The young guy taking our order, wasn't the friendliest. He seemed a little nervous so I gathered he may be new. I asked if they served matcha because I did not see it on the menu. He began to look at their menu display on the wall and the barista on the floor answered, "Yes." He glanced at her and then turned back to me. And I cheerful said (with a smile), "Well, now you know." And he just stood there with the same blank stare. I asked about flavors and received assistance from the more experienced barista. The young guy completed my order and he did follow up with, " Have a nice day," but he could use a little help in the customer service department. My guest and I drank and chatted in the entryway just outside the cafe where other chairs were provided. It was such a cozy and relaxed space to be in with beautiful art to view. The Black Door Cafe is inside the historic Mills House Hotel. They're open pretty early, so it was a no-brainer to grab a coffee and some breakfast before starting our day in Charleston. Unfortunately, on the morning we visited, they were pretty short staffed and were dealing with some broken machinery. The single barista working was having to troubleshoot the machine, take orders, AND make the beverages/heat breakfast items. We ordered 2 nonfat vanilla lattes, but I think the barista forgot the vanilla. Otherwise, our sandwiches were delicious, and they prepared drinks correctly on our visit the next morning. read more

I've been wanting to try this place and will be back to try more! I went at lunch time and got an iced coffee, which was great. I'm a bit of a coffee snob, but it was strong but light. I had already eaten but they have a variety of fresh made salads, a grilled cheese and a Cuban sandwich (which looked great.) It's nestled in a hotel that a cute store and super cute looking restaurant and bar (Iron Rose.) It's super close to another coffee shop, so if one is busy, it's convenient to hop to the other.
