This place is incredibly underrated. Destiny and Meagan (aka 'DM' ‐ which is what I wish they'd do to me) have been the epitome of perfection. In bartending as well. Meagan is a master of her craft. Her people skills are impeccable. Literally. Everytime I see her interact with customers, I feel like I'm on Punk'd. And who doesn't wanna feel like a celebrity?!?! And Destiny.. what can I say about this poetic wordsmith? Her diverse dichotomy of disengaged debonairs disenchants the derelicts of dirty Brooklyn. They are located directly on the boardwalk so you simply have to walk up and order..... So I am at a clam bar but guess what? They had no little neck clams! Sat for about 5 minutes at the bar while the bartender studiously cleaned the bottles behind the bar. Those were some meticulously clean bottles when she was done! $10 margaritas that were ok. Would have been better if I hadn't had a $7.50 margarita at Margarita Island earlier that was oh so much better as well as a $9 margarita at Red Doors that was out of this world and twice as large. Ordered a corn dog and an order of mozzarella sticks and we were allowed to eat them at the bar as we sipped on our tiny overpriced margaritas. Corn dog was great, mozzarella sticks were good. Meh experience. 2 bartenders TOTALLY ignored us when we were finished our drinks. The bottle cleaner never came back after she took our initial order, the second one ignored us AFTER we told her we were ready for the check. She was too busy serving the dude who bellied up to the bar WITH HIS TODDLER!!!! Is that even legal? The kid couldn't be more than 5 years old, but she sure enough took a seat at the bar. I make it a point to always stop by Rubie's when I'm back in NY each summer. I've been going to Ruby's since I was old enough to drink in 2005. I've always had a great time with my friends, and love the improvements they've been making over the years. Food portions and quality are extremely fair for the price, especially you're on the heart of the boardwalk. I would definitely recommend stopping by for a beer and a snack. The family who runs the place has owned it for as long as I've been going and are always really friendly and happy to chat. read more

Came here during the Mermaid Parade because Mitch E told us it was the best place to chill out with beers while waiting for the parade to reach the boardwalk. And he wasn't wrong. Ruby's is old school Brooklyn, through and through. There are black and white photos of famous people who have stopped by. There are pieces of boardwalk hanging from the ceiling. There's a gigantic American flag because America is the greatest country in the world. And they have fried beach food. Most importantly, they have booze. Out front, they have a cash bar, for quick in/out, but inside they take cards (no Amex though) and have a wider selection of booze. Inside, it got pretty rowdy, especially once the parade is over. But if you can snag a table, you can just chill out for a bit and watch in awe at how long the women's bathroom line is. Fun times. read more

Bartender was super nice. Drinks are pricey for the lack of quality 12-14$ in small plastic cups. He allowed me and my work team to play heads up which is the opposite of a quiet game so i respected their tolerance of our shenanigans. Ambience is super laid back. My friends and I visited Rubys a few months ago during a Coney Island visit. We stumbled upon Rubys and I was glad we did. It is a dive, but had a relaxing/laid back feel to it! I had a Ruby's Red Ale draft for 7.00. I thought that was a little pricey, but it is New York. It tasted like Kilians which isnt a bad thing. Lots of history on the wall, and a personable bartender who was the owner that day. I have been reading that the city wants to take over all of the noncorporate places on the boardwalk and put in some "much needed" sports bars and other venues. I hope the city leaves Ruby's and the other establishments alone. They are far from cookie cutter type places and have their own history! read more

I'm probably at Ruby's at least once a summer. Decently priced despite being on the boardwalk, and it's a good spot to stop for a drink after beaching. The oysters are better than you think, and they have a summer shandy beer that's summery and fun, but not always easy to find. read more

A but overpriced, but I liked the huge seating section, at the back, and the large clean bathrooms. A bit of a wait time, but that is expected at most Coney Island spots. It was my first time coming to New York City and I was told to come down to visit Ruby's by a friend who visited a while back. The view from the bar was better than he originally described it to me and the food came out fairly quickly. Once I realized that everything on the boardwalk is overpriced I suddenly didn't feel as bad for spending as much as I did. Well worth the money as the hospitality me and my family received felt really refreshing. Not many mom-and-pop places are left like this around. Recently visited here early afternoon this past Sunday. My Wife & I sat at the bar & watched the bartender tend to others the cane after us before someone finally approached us. I ordered our food from the food area to go back to the bar and order my drink. The food was given to us where we were sitting at the bar. Unfortunately, there was a Burger instead of the wings we ordered. This was later fixed. The best part about the place is the memorabilia on the wall! It's absolutely amazing to see all of the history Coney Island has on this one wall while you have a cocktail & some fries. Came into ruby's the other day with some boys on a hot Friday, we ordered 2 turkey burgers and some waffle fries. Once we received the food we took a walk on the boardwalk while eating our food. I take a bite out the turkey burger and come to find out this shit was frozen. Not only was the food bad but the service was horrible, while I was ordering me and my boys we're receiving dirty looks from the cashier, the staff needs to have better manners and respect the customers if they want the peoples business. It was a lot darker and danker back then and it really was a dive bar. It was sketchy, but I was attracted to it and had returned to it many times over the years. Most recently, a friend and I stopped by for a few beers before the Mermaid Parade. I hadn't been back to Coney since before hurricane Sandy. After seeing the destruction and loss that occurred, I am elated to see that Ruby's (and the rest of Coney) are back. Ruby's is an institution, you *have* to have a drink here. Iconic, classic and time tested. Ruby's is a landmark on the Coney island Boardwalk where you come to catch a drink before drunk go karting. Move it thirteen year old I have an imaginary race to win. How can you not love this place. It's so vintage Coney Island and that's rare these days. Ruby's is one of the few remaining boardwalk shops that have not be taken over by the city or some douchebag conglomerate. I hate the new souvenir store next door, the old one was great. (Thanks Bloomberg) The owner of Ruby's, Mike, is a great guy. He's usually behind the bar himself busting out cold brews. They even have their own Ruby's beer. Pretty tasty. They have a jukebox inside, lots of seating, great bar food and some awesome old pictures up on the wall. This was probably one of the worst thought plans we've ever had. My boyfriend and I wanted to go to The Freak Bar on Surf Ave to catch a show but since it was a Monday and they only do shows during the weekend, we decided to grab a drink at Ruby's. The place itself is not bad- staff was polite, the place not too crowded but the clientele. Omg, the clientele. I've never been around so many 1-star people (degenerates) in my entire life. A few observations: 1) Two seconds after I sat down on the outside seats, two girls stormed out of the bar screaming at the top of their lungs about how they were going to sue and rambling about a lost cellphone. They come back w/ boardwalk security in tow and get into a loud verbal disagreement with the management right by the entrance. Great. It's THAT kind of place. 2) Three people with big snakes around their necks decided to park their wares by our table and hustle people into paying to have their pictures taken w/ the vile reptiles thus attracting even more 1-star people. Management was too busy arguing w/ the two girls that they didn't notice this big health violation. 3) At one point, two guys come up to our table to beg for change and then proceed to harass people in line for food. 4) The two girls finally get their cellphone back and they sashay out of the place but not before playing tug of war with a t-shirt ... right by the snake people. 5) Some dude w/ a severe case of rosacea kept staring and scaring everyone with his red face. Ruby's is a bar located on Coney Island's boardwalk. The whole front of the place is opened up. You can sit on your stool, look to the left past the other drunkards, and see the distant horizon on the sea. There is a good jukebox that plays the likes of Bobby Daren, Sinatra, Jefferson Airplane, Screamin' Jay Hawkins, and an occasional Spanish song. You might also hear Journey, but even they sound good in Ruby's- well maybe not. There are couches and coffee tables in the back. They remind me of furniture that would be seen at a yard sale- which I suppose is good or bad depending your taste. There is also a concession stand facing the boardwalk that sells typical Coney Island fried food. On my last visit, I sat alone at the bar, drinking my Ruby's Amber ($7), I found myself looking out at that oceanic horizon- thinking about the yellowed photos covering the wall behind the bar. Photos of another time, Coney Island's golden age. Most of the buildings, amusements and people in those photos are now gone. Some are remembered by the living today, some are forgotten. If area redevelopment goes as planned, Ruby's will join them- so go there and drink now before it's too late. The local characters, the location, and palpable spirit of old Coney, make it a unique experience. Whatever it's fate, I am sure that Ruby's will be remembered for a long time as one of the great New York dive bars. read more

I literally created a Yelp account just to write this review - I went in this past Sunday afternoon with my friend to get a quick drink before heading back to Manhattan. We popped in, had a quick seat at the bar... we waited over 20 minutes before anyone would even acknowledge us. The worst part was that the bar wasn't even full or busy, but both bartenders (one male, one female) would repeatedly look past us, time after time. At one point they were looking at customers who already had a drink to ask if they needed anything else... this leads me to believe only two things - either they are a bunch of racists or homophobes. I am a Latina and my friends is Caucasian. I am straight, he is gay. Both clean cut, respectful and just wanted a quick beer before heading back. I am still left wondering which of us offended them so much that they decided to look past us for over 20 minutes refusing to serve us anything, or even acknowledge us. I can definitely say we will both be back to Coney Island/Brighton Beach soon as every where else we went during our day trip was so hospitable and friendly, but we (and we'll be sure to spread the word to our friends, family & colleagues) will NEVER be back to Ruby's. read more

One of the world's "Sexiest Beach Bars?" Huh? Maybe according to the National Federation of the Blind. Usually I'm in step with the Yelp rating consensus on most places I visit, but this isn't one of those times. Ruby's may be referred to as an institution or even legendary, but it seemed rather mediocre to me. Okay, it is the only bar remaining on the Coney Island boardwalk and it's been there forever. I get all that, but other than that...uh...what did I miss? I didn't miss the ton of people packed in here. I didn't miss the ultra long lines waiting for food. I didn't even miss the $8 local draft served in a plastic cup. I got all that too. I guess I'm nice enough to allow it to barely squeak a three star rating, probably more out of guilt since it was one-time, brief visit rather than anything tangible. You're welcome, Ruby's. But, outside of the decent service, next time show me what ya really got to justify the local praise. Please. read more

Prime spot on the Coney Island boardwalk, and is definitely a must visit staple. 80 years running this summer. Pretty impressive. The bartenders move very quickly and keep your plastic cups full. They have a Brooklyn, their own Amber Ale, and Coors Light on draft....other options in bottle. I recommend the Amber Ale. The only downer is the price...$7 a beer. I wouldn't expect a buyback here either given how packed it gets in here. The place opens to the boardwalk, so you can easily walk out to get some sun or grab a Nathan's (which will be equally as packed). Beers right outside the bar is usually not an issue. There are some tables if I remember correctly. Expect to wait on line for bathrooms, and expect it to be crowded. You can also expect to have a good time. read more
