Can't believe I haven't reviewed this place. Rubys is my go to place when I crave Filipino food. Don't be fooled by its hole in a wall appearance. They serve all the goods here from filipino style spaghetti, lechon kawali, pancit canton, pancit palabok, all the tapsilog varieties, and the list goes on and on. PreCovid, they have a buffet special on weekends for around 8 to 9 dollars and its so amazing. There meal deals are awesome too with 2 entrees/ulam with a large amount of rice for around 6 to 7 dollars! They also do catering if you desire. There food tastes good and reminds me of my times in the Philippines. The two brothers who work here are super friendly and do such a great job managing all the traffic of customers here. I definitely would recommend calling in ahead of time for your order to avoid the long waits in line because this placd can get packed especially on the weekends. Parking can be a bit difficult on times on Montrose, so parking on side streets maybe the way to go. Definitely try this place out sometime! read more

I always ordered their Lumpia Shanghai for events and they're always a hit where ever I bring them. I came here for breakfast and I ordered their Tapsilog (beef tapa, itlog[egg], sinangag[garlic fried rice]). I probably waited about 15 minutes for it to be cooked and it was so worth it. Probably the best Tapsilog I've ever had. PERIODT. The prices for their entrees/combos are also very reasonable. They also have buffet options during the weekend and the prices weren't bad either. If you do come here I recommend you bring an old jacket or don't wear one at all because when you walk out it will def smell like food. Second time to dine here since they moved. Much improved dining room and the facility overall. Food prices have increased and it is understandable due to inflation and better ambiance. The best value are their lunch special and the breakfasts. I think they cut their prices recently due to many suggestions. This is a good thing. We ordered Kare Kare (oxtails) to take home. It was very tasty and tender. I think the portion ( 4 pieces of oxtail) could be a little more for the price of $35+. It would be nice to have some squashes, or potatoes in this stew. Oxtails are quite expensive and maybe that's why many restaurants use beef instead. I think a nice substitute would be beef neck bones. Less expensive and could be quite meaty with similar texture. They have a changing variety of different Pinoy dishes daily, as well as everyday staples like pancit bihon, Filipino spaghetti, and polabok to name a few. I was told that Ruby's is one of Chicago's best Filipino restaurants in what is an otherwise under represented region of food. The menu is not particularly big. Ruby's is known for the silog (which through research is 3 words in 1 "toc" abbreviation for the meat, in this case pork, "si" garlic fried rice, and "log" which is a fried egg. I like trying the different dishes on the buffet table and also usually order a combo plate as well. With me being Laotian, I find the Philippine cuisine very different and also very delicious. The food was already delicious when it was the smaller location, but ever since they moved to the bigger location I think the food has gotten even better! I take my mom here every time I'm in town because it's our fave Filipino restaurant. No matter what we order it is SO FREAKING DELICIOUS!!
