What a wonderful little bakery! Dropped in today for our first visit and there was Rudy working behind the counter with a big smile on his face. Such a nice greeting! Now that we've enjoyed our treats, I highly recommend the white bread (so soft and buttery), the bismarks (more jelly inside than any other I can remember), pecan roll (amazing), blueberry muffin (no too sweet, just right) and the chocolate donut twists. Saving the hot crossed bun and the pound of bakery cookies for tomorrow:) This is the kind of bakery you want to support: family owned and delicious. read more

MY FAVORITE PLACE IN THE WHOLE WORLD. especially when i lived in roscoe village. this is an absolute diamond in the rough of restaurants on roscoe street that feel overpriced/generally lackluster. this bakery has history, the current owner having been there for 30-40+ years. the recipes are old school, no fancy flavors or anything, but consistently high quality product at absolutely RIDICULOUS prices for chicago. pastries range from around 1-3 dollars a pop, and i would stop in at least once a week to interact with rudy (he's the baker and front of shop and has the energy of a super kind grandfather). i've tried a bunch of their pastries, and all of them are super great! my absolute favorites are the almond twist (probably one of the best pastries ever. chuck full of almond filling, the bread/pastry portion is light without being cloying, and it's monstrous for 1.75), the cheese roll (literally a cheesecake wrapped around with cake, it's crazy), their cinnamon cake donut (when you get them at the right time, they're the lightest most fluffy things ever!!!!! convinced me that i actually like cake donuts), and the raspberry danish (sweet, but oh so nostalgic). their pastries range on the sweeter side, but they feel like such a treat each time for such reasonable prices. this store and rudy are the moment and deserve all the support in the world! read more

I feel like this place totally doesn't get enough credit. At all. Rudy's is often overshadowed by Dinkel's, which is just a few blocks away. Don't get me wrong, Dinkel's is great. But when you're in the mood for some excellent, small-batch, tastes-like-your-grandma-made-it-with-love treats, take the four-block trek down Roscoe to Rudy's. It definitely looks like a family-owned place, and everything I've tried there has been cheap, fresh, and delicious. The pastries are very generous in size and dirt cheap. The pies are also especially awesome - try the pecan when in season - a whole pie for $6. The winners, however, are the giant coconut macaroons, which are by far the best I've ever had. read more

I live near this bakery and walk past it regularly but had never stopped in. Today I was walking down the street and decided I could use a cup of coffee. I debated a minute about going into Rudy's or crossing the street and going to Starbucks. I like to support small business where I can and decided to go to Rudy's, and I am so glad that I did! I ordered a small, individual sized cake and a small coffee. The cake was delicious! It alternated between yellow and chocolate cakes and was not dry at all. The coffee was also delicious, and I really appreciated that the man working behind the counter was willing to root around in the fridge and dig some skim milk out of the very back for me. Altogether, my coffee and cake only came to $2.25 which I really thought was a fantastic deal. I will definitely revisit Rudy's. The baked goods (or at least the little cake I had) and the coffee served here are very good, and the people working here are really kind. I feel like I got much more than I paid for, which is not something I ever feel leaving Starbucks. read more

If you are looking for some classy, expensive, gorgeously decorated, over priced, snobby customers, music blaring type of bakery, go to Julius Meinl. Well, although this place looks sketchy from your carview window, it really is a cutest little shop inside. It has that feel that it's been around forever, a classic bakery feel if you will. Not to say the inside is beautiful, but it's ok. I liked that. I got a large coffee and two pastries for under 5 bucks! 5 BUCKS! Take THAT Starbucks (directly across the street from it with a usual line out the door and around the block). Their coffee is delicious. It's a Colombian blend and very little cream and sugar are needed. You can really taste the beans roasted! The gentlemen who took my order is a very friendly man. Quiet, mysterious, but very nice. The pastries were delicious! I got a danish and something else similar to that with nuts on top. Both very good! Rich in flavor and the bread was great. I try to swing by here as much as I can before work. It's not a crazy busy bakery with lines out the door. You're in and out which I love. And as I was exiting the shop, I heard a little boy calling out "Grandpa, look at this!" Made me realize why I support these great mom and pop shops to begin with. He's probably teaching his grandson how to roll dough :) read more

Rudy's is a great bakery with affordable prices and lots of classic pastries to offer. Their fun window displays of seasonal and holiday cakes remind you of being a kid again. This isn't the place for gourmet cupcakes, cronuts, or whatever the latest pastry fad of the week is. Our all-time favorites are the homemade turnovers, coffee cake, ham & cheese croissants, challah bread (great for french toast), raspberry squares, and of course the paczki on paczki day. Lots of fun special cookie designs for kids. Much cheaper and fresher than what Starbucks offers across the street. They remodeled in the past year and added some more seating and new flooring. Sometimes when the need for cake overpowers me, I must give in. One morning I stopped into Rudy's for a slice of cake. I decided on a coconut cake with raspberry filling and took it home so I could eat the cake in the dark to hide my shame. The cake, even though it had been individually wrapped, was dried out. It really did not satisfy my cake cravings at all. I was terribly disappointed because I liked the bakery and I love to support small businesses, but this cake did not do anything for me. As I near the end of my time in Roscoe Village *tear* I finally visited Rudy's. Charming family-run bakery. A hole-in-the wall if you will, not necessarily the most aesthetically pleasing bakery but run by a very heart-warming family. I had to try the coffee cake as so many Yelpers suggested. I was excited when I found out that they have multiple coffee cake flavors! Chocolate...prune...pecan...lemon....WHAT TO CHOOSE? WHAT TO CHOOSE?!!! As a pecan roll lover, I went with the pecan.. And got even more excited when I found out it was only $1.28! HUH? WHAT? Even with Chicago's uncannily high taxes?!!! YAYYYYYYYYY. I left quite pleased with my purchase, sat at the Starbucks across the street (JUDGE AS YOU MAY) and delighted in my buttery, flaky, coffee cake! I've returned twice since my first visit. This is a seriously overlooked little bakery. It's definitely old school and, I have to be honest, I kind of appreciate that. In a world of places that are trying to do it bigger and better and weirder, just for the novelty, it's kind of nice to walk into a place where it feels like time has stopped. The one down side to this place is that they're cash only, which I really do hate. Consequently, I wasn't able to get the cross section of stuff I would normally buy when I visit a bakery for the first time. I did have a big chocolate chip cookie and a horseshoe chocolate sandwich cookie, which were both seriously killer. That was a few weeks ago and I'm still thinking about those cookies. I also had an apple strudel, which was lovely. So flaky and buttery- a classic, and beautifully done. I want to try the cheese strudel now. Don't let the slightly dated exterior put you off- there are secret treasures inside. Just bring enough cash to pay for them. read more

My kind of bakery: old-school, great selection of no-frills pastries, and low prices! When I say old-school, I mean it. Remember those smiley-face cookies from your youth? They have 'em. Better yet, they have frowny face cookies as well, which were hard for me to resist for their hilarity factor. Their brownies are also quite wonderful. I came in an hour before they closed and everything was still very fresh. But be aware that Rudy's is also cash only! I love this bakery because its very old school and not trying to be anything more than what it is - a bakery. They have everything from special order cakes, cupcakes, eclairs, brownies, donuts (wish they had a larger selection though), coffee cakes, sweet rolls (the best!), danish, breads, and my favorite, the good old-fashion smiley face cookie with that distinct yellowing icing and chocolate frosting eyes and smile. Sometimes they even have sad face cookies, hahahaha. They have been hit and miss depending on the day, but the owner is such a nice man and the prices are dirt cheap, like under $1 for most single items (rolls, cookies, danish, etc.) I often get nervous because I wonder how these small mom and pop shops can survive the growing neighborhoods where I'm sure rents can get pretty steep. It was errand Saturday. The errands started around 9:00 in the morning out in the Joliet area with my youngest daughter. Who is still an hour and twenty minutes short of her magic 50 hours of driving to get her license. Then I will have three behind the wheel. Errand Saturday ended that night back home around 8:00 pm, with my wife and oldest son. What a day!! Along the way one of our stops was at Rudy's Bakery in Roscoe Village. We have never been to Rudy's so it was nice to try. The older gentleman behind the counter was quiet but friendly. We ordered a one pound box of assorted butter cookies and a tasty looking eclair for my oldest daughter. I didn't get to try the eclair, I will have to ask my daughter about it, but the cookies were good. We had probably about 8 to 10 different varieties of butter cookies. They were all moist and tasty. None of them were bad but nothing truly to write home about. Our total bill was around $11 dollars. But I was shorted a dollar when I got my change back. That will teach me to count it in the store and not just put it in my pocket to count later. So if you are in the Roscoe Village area and looking for a nice little bakery stop by Rudy's. Of course I would recommend you count your change before you leave. read more

The Boston creek donut is out of this world, with thick delicious dough and rich creamy custard, amazing challah breads, and incredibly friendly staff. I noticed another review that would contradict that statement, but I'm a butter girl and feel pretty strongly that you need to try for yourself on these pastries! If you like Old World bakery of Lake Zurich, Thomspons (long closed) of Park Ridge, and have a tendency to prefer french/german/english style baked goodies, this is the bakery for you. Specifically, they have chocolate covered cake donuts, sticky buns, raspberry & apricot sweet rolls that are done with absolute perfection. They also have these deliciously sweet and cute coffee cake PIZZAs! It's a circular coffee cake with pepperoni-circles of different jams/cheese (raspberry, lemon curd, apricot, cheese).
