A true to form NW side bakery from the taste of the pastries to the frankness of the interior setup. I am a *very* picky person in the bakery department and this place has just the right taste. The Taste: Northwest Side of Chicago has a Bakery Style...Really! Reminiscent of the Thompson's bakery in Park Ridge, these cookies sweet rolls, coffee cakes and donuts have extraordinary flavor that only butter or lard can deliver. I noticed another review that would contradict that statement, but I'm a butter girl and feel pretty strongly that you need to try for yourself on these pastries! If you like Old World bakery of Lake Zurich, Thomspons (long closed) of Park Ridge, and have a tendency to prefer french/german/english style baked goodies, this is the bakery for you. Specifically, they have chocolate covered cake donuts, sticky buns, raspberry & apricot sweet rolls that are done with absolute perfection. They also have these deliciously sweet and cute coffee cake PIZZAs! It's a circular coffee cake with pepperoni-circles of different jams/cheese (raspberry, lemon curd, apricot, cheese). They also have a variety of breads to choose from, but honestly I mostly hit the sweets, so I can't attest to their prowess in the bread department :) What For On the way to a friends house for brunch, holiday parties, the in laws for easter, birthday parties and holidays, this bakery was always a stop for us to pick up 'a little something sweet'. It's also a perfect Saturday morning walk for anyone living in Roscoe Village. It's right across the Village Thrift parking lot...fuel up before the dig! The Place No frills place with a booth or two off to the side in case you want to eat your danish & have some coffee pronto. This is a classic bakery, as many other reviewers quipped as "old school" - all work being done in the back with all the benefits of incredibly low priced and daily baked fresh goods in the front. I love Rudy! He is so sweet. He preps everything over night, each night, so it's always fresh. The cheese danish is unreal good, and it's $1.39! The butter cookies are delicious too. Delicious danish varieties daily--the raspberry/custard and pecan are remarkable, and the coffee cake called the Heck's Special that Rudy got the recipe from the previous owner, a famous Lakeview German Bakery named Heck's, is awesome: a streusel square about 12"×12", 2"thick, with a ring in the middle, filled with egg custard and generously sprinkled with toasted pecans, and iced --it must weigh 5 lbs! It's a family favorite, better have a gallon of milk handy, this cake is so rich, you're gonna need it. And Rudy is the nicest man you'll ever meet. This is an adorable place to go to with the kids! I love to stop by with my son and daughter after an outing in Roscoe village and have cookie and coffee with them. The staff is friendly and it is really a great local place. The cookies are all great and reasonably priced. read more

LOVE IT!! OMG the croissants and butter cookies are delicious! Rudy is so nice! It's a kid-safe business, too. I really like this little place & hope it stays around for a loooooooong time. Discovered this place this week - went 3 times already! I would definitely recommend!

I stop into Rudy's when I can. They have funny hours, even for a bakery, and seem to be closed a lot of the time. They have some nice cookies, and some pastries, but their donuts are lacking, and their cupcakes just aren't as awesome as they should be. I agree with other posters that the price is right at this bakery, but I will walk the extra half mile to the other places in the neighborhood that I like better. read more

Oh Rudy's, I want to love you SO BAD. You're a shabby little bakery in a perfect little location. I walked by you all the time and peered at the window quizzically to see awkward little baked goods sparsely populating the display. I have a really soft, squishy spot in my heart for local bakeries, though, so I finally went in recently with an open mind, open eyes and an empty stomach, looking for something to satisfy my insatiable sweet tooth. Inside looks pretty much how you would expect it would look, lots of shades of yellow/off-white, like the building has just gone a long time without love. But it's ok with me if the paint is dingy, as long as the food isn't. Some of the treats looked promising, like the cookies and breakfast pastries, and some of them looked kind of depressed. I went with a brownie and a peanut butter cookie. The man behind the counter was very sweet, and the prices were great. Unfortunately, the treats were just so-so. So saddings. I had such high hopes. The PB cookie and brownie were on the dry side - still tasty - but didn't taste freshly baked and definitely nothing to get too excited about. So I went in again today. Maybe I didn't get the right stuff last time. I thought the danishes looked the best the last time I came and they still looked pretty good today so I went with an apple danish. It was just ok. I liken the taste to those danishes you buy in bulk at Costco. Whyyyy Rudy's whyyyy? I dunno dude. I've given this bakery two tries to amaze me. Both times it hasn't. Both times it hasn't repulsed me, either. It was just ok. I enjoy the staff and the prices don't make me feel like I'm totally throwing money away so maybe I'll try again at a later point in time. I live on Lake Shore Drive and Roscoe Village is not the closest place to buy cake/cookies but I always can rely on Rudy's . Years ago I had apple Strudel at a friend's house (more than 10 years ago) and since then I have been hooked on his strudel, danish, cookies,etc. Rudy the owner is so incredibly flexible. I had a huge cake made for a special birthday and I couldn't decide on the filling and he said "no problem, I can make 1/2 of the cake with one filling and the other half with the other" It was a huge hit as people had an excuse to eat two pieces of cake instead. I would highly recommend Rudy's for a weekend coffee & danish, special birthdays, holidays, office party, etc. Everything is fresh, reasonably priced (not these outrageous prices you find in other city bakeries) and he is great! Came here on a Saturday morning after an appointment in the area and was greeted by a real nice man working the store. He was patient while I took forever with my order. Everything looked delicious! I finally settled on a cheese danish which was excellent. Too bad I don't live in the area, otherwise, I would come here more. read more

Rudy's used to be called Heck's Bakery. When I grew up in the neighborhood the place was packed on a weekend morning and they always had the window full of cakes and baked goodies. As it changed owners it was not as good. But then Rudy's got the original recipes from Heck's. I recently went back and got donuts, danishes, and cheese pizza coffee cake. OMG. The cheese pizza was as good as it always was. So moist. The cake donuts were good old-fashioned donuts. Even the plain ones were tasty. I don't get a chance to get back there that often. So I hope people in the neighborhood aren't put off by the looks and go in and try it and keep the place in business. Joy N. read more

Fantastic little place. It doesn't look like much from the outside - or inside for that matter - but truth be told, maybe one of the best bakers on the Northside. The bakery is often empty - and everything is cheap! The first time I visited, I wondered why they didn't seem motivated to attract customers - turns out they're supplying every restaurant in Roscoe Village with their bread, which is probably their main source of revenue. I learned this when I was there one Saturday and there were 2 busboys from neighboring restaurants picking up fresh orders. My favorites are the chocolate long john and the cherry pie squares! A must for any Roscoe Villager. read more

Stopped in here today because I had a craving for something not so healthy for breakfast this morning. All I have to say is this place is definitely 100x better than their comeptitors in the neighborhood. Its a little bakery in the heart of roscoe village that looks like it got stuck in the 60's but oh man the food is absolutely on point. Got Packazi for Fat Tuesday.... better than Dinkels and Dinkels is top rated by timeout magazine. Go here you wont be disappointed. read more

I live just up the street, I have seen Rudy's numerous times, but because I'm generally walking my dogs at night- it's usually closed. I was able to stop in today and though the place doesn't look all that interesting from the outside, I was very happy once I walked in. There were a few tables placed here and there, very informal and vintage set up but I was greeted immediately by a very nice man who I can only assume is "Rudy"- I failed to ask. I was pleased to see all the different pastry's from donuts to cakes and cupcakes, down to your everyday coffee! The displays were informal but did their job, you could see everything perfectly and all pieces looked so fresh and delicious. I ended up getting a cup of coffee for myself and a cheese lattice coffee cake- as large as a frozen pizza- for the company I am having this evening. I enjoyed a slice of the coffee cake, and the coffee, which is more like your traditional Diner coffee, not the motor oil from Starbucks ;) to each their own. :) Anywho, very happy I stopped in, Rudy (or the man who has been the Baker for the past 26 years) was very nice, the goodies were yummy- just a Ma and Pop feel. Thrilled to live right around the corner, will visit again asap! read more

This bakery will bring back memories of your grandmother. The baked goods are very traditional and delicious. The butter cookies melt in your mouth. I have gone to this bakery for about 18 years. I spoke to Rudy and he told me that he gets up at around 3 am everyday to prepare for the day. Rudy's Bakery is a traditional bakery in every sense. read more

I grew up in Roscoe Village, and back in the '60's and '70's, there was a fantastic bakery on this site named "Heck's Bakery", run by the Heck family. When they closed up shop, at least one other bakery occupied this storefront. They were not as good. Then came Rudy. I believe he bought some of the Heck family recipes, as there are items at Rudy's which I remember from the Heck days. The most decadent of which is the "Heck's Special", a 3-inch thick, wonderfully dense coffee cake with a custard filling and topped with icing and nuts. The chocolate chip coffee cake, and the "cheese pizza" coffee cakes are also winners, as are the assorted sweet rolls. Also recommended are the fruit slices. As has been stated in some of the other reviews, the small cookies no longer seem to use the same amount of butter as in the old days, but they're still quite good, especially the yellow ones with delicious dollop of fudge on top. The big decorated cookies are the ones to go for. There's always an interesting assortment of those, decorated for whatever holiday might be upon us, or frosted to look like smily faces or baseballs. I cannot comment on the layer cakes as I have not tried those. Rudy and the rest of the staff have always been very friendly. The prices are great. read more
