This is always been some of the best donuts I've had anywhere. Just an incident recently pissed me off when I arrived a few hours before closing trying to buy food for relatives. I got the donuts, but the kitchen was allegedly closed because the person doing a cooking was leaving early, however I overheard her on the phone asking someone, I think a relative or a friend, " did they want fries too?" When I commented aloud, "I thought the kitchen was closed," Iwas totally ignored. Also, I believe the gentleman who graciously served me the donuts told her to wait until I leave to cook something, as I saw her look back in my direction. There's nothing wrong with people having to leave early but either you are you aren't if you're willing to do something for a friend or a relative you should just as well be able to accommodate a couple of customers who are the reason you're Employed BULLSHIT BUT TYPICAL FOR SOME PEOPLE. read more

I've been meaning to venture out to the legendary Old Fashioned Donuts for some time now. I happened to be working out that way this morning and stopped by. There was a like when I got there a little after 9:00. I imagine it looks the same or similar now than it did when it opened. I love that feel though. It's an establishment that found a formula that works. If it's not broke don't fix it. There are two long tables with stools for communal seating. Most people were just getting their order to go. You can't beat the prices. By the time I got up to order there wasn't a huge variety available. There were more being prepared, but I was in a hurry and didn't have much time to wait. The cashier was friendly and gave me a rundown of what was available. I ordered a dozen and a dozen donut holes. The donuts were really good especially the fresh ones. I would eat these over a Stan's, Dunkin or any other commercial donut any day. I'll definitely come back and I'll adjust my rating once I've had a chance to try more variety. read more

Yes, I did go to the completely opposite side of town for a donut. No, I don't regret it, and no, this isn't Old Fashioned Donuts fault. This place has consistently ranked as having some of the best donuts in the US, so I decided to give them a go. Perhaps my mistake was ordering an apple fritter, but I'm glad I did, for it showed a weak point. Before that, however, I had the tremendous pleasure of trying a donut hole. The said donut hole was so fresh, it was still warm. The dough was cooked and glazed perfectly, and overall had the kinds of flavors and gentle crispness that would easily have me eat two dozen before I realized! Then came the apple fritter. This thing was huge! It also had the same remarkable glaze and crispness, now with apples! A great breakfast or dessert. However, there were some spots right around the apple where it felt as though the dough was still raw. Where it comes to the vibe, while there were no cleanliness issues, it felt old and worn. While this came be cute and/or charming if executed correctly, this was closer to depressing. Finally, for the service, I do not share the sentiment that it is rude. Not a mustachioed waiter in a waistcoat, but perfectly polite. Thus, Old Fashioned donuts does their things pretty well. This donut spot is in my top 3 list of donut shops in Chicago. Family members and friends have bought them. After 30 years of being in Chicago, I went to the location to purchase some myself. Talk about being blown away. Getting them hot is like no other feeling. I am not big into donuts that have a lot of frosting or way too much in the way of toppings. Old Fashioned Donuts shine in simplicity. You can taste fresh donuts that aren't hiding under a piling of frosting. And the prices only add to addiction. Is it a special hole in the wall that's been around for decades whipping up some of the most special nostalgic donuts before time? Yes. My grandfather used to take my father here as a boy to get donuts so there's something special about the hands that prepare these. Y'all may hate me for this, but I do not understand the hype, and was truly disappointed. I'd heard about Old Fashioned Donuts when I first moved to Chicago, as it was hailed as the best donuts in the city. They have no social media presence, besides a Facebook page that is not updated, unless to dispel rumors. Now that I live closer to Old Fashioned, I figured I'd make a trek out South for Labor Day weekend. Luckily, someone left a review stating that they were closed until the Tuesday after Labor Day. There's paid street parking, and when I arrived, I was able to get in and out in under 10 minutes. There was limited selection of glazed, chocolate frosting, strawberry frosted, maybe a maple glaze, glazed croissants, cinnamon rolls, and apple fritters. I ordered a half dozen glazed and an apple fritter. Since they were closed for the long weekend, I just knew the donuts would be fresh. The first glazed donut was not covered in glaze, especially not the center-- but it tasted like just glaze on one side. The donuts are not much to write home about. Even though I'm not a Stan's lover, Stan's glazed donuts are better. The Old Fashioned Donuts in my opinion are on par with Dunkin, and I hate Dunkin Donuts. There was no distinctive flavor, the donuts were not soft nor were they flaky. The apple fritter on the other hand was delicious! It was flaky, filled with apple and fresh for $4 and change. All in all, I'm glad that I finally tried Old Fashioner Donuts, but I won't be back. read more

This place makes me drive all the way to the Southside to get these mofos and that right there is why they are getting five stars. I grew up with this shop as I went to high school at Willibrord Catholic back in the day. There was a weekly ritual were I would go to Taurus to get a $1 hoagy and to Old Fashioned to get a Texas size glazed donut, every Wednesday until I graduated from high school. When I was in various school clubs, we would buy donuts from here and sell them at a marked up price....no one ever complained, and we made money for the clubs. Buying these donuts by the dozen can be dangerous as there are none left over by the end of the day. I am telling you, the drive to this shop is worth it. And I am telling you; I get high on these donuts. The glazed ones are like biting into a cloud, so so soft and delicious. And the cake donuts are just as great. And don't get me started on those GD apple fritters! Man slap a piece of bacon on one of those, pour yourself some bubbles and you have a heavenly meal. I know there are those that like these new fangled infused concoctions, with their fancy ingredients, and they are good. But give me a good Old Fashioned donut every time. I came into today and can see why Yelp has voted this place the best donut shop in Illinois!!!!! It was a line that moved fast. I ordered 6 donuts...all glazed! I've heard that the apple fritters from Old Fashioned Donuts could bring about world peace, and after making the trek down there today, I agree. This was the best donut I have ever had, and I don't even like donuts. The fritter itself was $5 and huge, maybe the size of an individual pizza. A sign posted at the shop said it contains 810 calories, and I believe it. But have you ever had food that was so good that your brain just shuts off its fullness signals for a bit? That's what happened here. It was fluffy and warm and chock full of apple bits, and I finished the whole thing in maybe fifteen minutes. Logistics-wise: I came at noon on a weekend and there was no line. They take cash or card. It's a no-frills place (no bathroom that I could see), but they do have two long tables with stools where you can sit and eat. Overall, highly recommended; I'm so glad I went... I do love my donuts, but this has been one of the worst donuts I have had. Strangely enough, the people seem to love these sugary rings of diabetes. When I arrived they were slightly behind on glazed donuts. Not a big deal as there was a small line and a couple of people had ordered more than a dozen donuts individually. We've been driving across town for years for the best doughnuts in Chicago. If you don't usually go to Roseland, you might be intimidated by the empty storefronts on this stretch of Michigan Avenue or how quiet and desolate it seems to be on an early Saturday morning. Relax, it's fine. No one is going to bite you. They know you're here for the legendary doughnuts. The storefront is not pretty. There are no fancy, sparkling logos. Again, relax. It's okay. You may see Mr. B. in the front window, manning the fryer. This is good news. If you get there too late in the morning, there's a chance your doughnuts will be oily. As a rule, we only get apple fritters if we're arriving very soon after opening. They're delicious then. The cake doughnuts are generally perfect. Crispy edges and just moist enough inside. They turn into delicate clouds of joy when dunked in black coffee. But the yeasted, raised ones are not to be missed. So light and tender. The caramel glazed doughnuts are a revelation too. And chocolate in or on any of their products actually tastes like chocolate. Coconut: amazing. Strawberry glazed: incredible. You can get trendy, hipster doughnuts all over the north side for a lot more money, but those all just taste like sugar and gentrification. And you could get a drive-thru corporate-owned doughnut, but if you think that's what doughnuts should taste like, you may have never actually eaten a real doughnut. Excellent family owned and operated business. It will undergo a small upgrade in October so you may want to get hooked now and return when the project is compearly. Here you can get Bismarks, jelly, cake and all the others PLUS their Texas size Vanilla and Chcolate which sells out early. While Im not absolutely certain, its believed the upgrade will enable the business to improve, and increase service to their Cafe part of the business. The donuts didn't disappoint. The glazed was airy & light with that sweet glaze! The cake chocolate donuts have those nice pieces of crispy bits of texture on them. My God, my God so delicious!! Since my wife and I are empty nesters we took a sample out of all of them. All were perfectly good!! We have to take another trip because I want that Double Chocolate! But we did see a coyote roaming in Roseland!
