The service was terrible and the food wasn't any where near places like Cabrera's or Margarita's which are only about ten minutes away geographically, but light years apart in culinary terms. My husband and I decided to try this place simply because there's always a line everytime we're in Old Town Monrovia. Outside the restaurant is Rudy's taco cart if you just want a grab and go. By the time we got to the restaurant, we probably waited for 20 minutes..which is not bad on a Friday night. We figured it must be worth the wait if people are waiting to be seated. Once we were at our table, our server greeted us with fresh chips and salsa. I had carnitas and my husband ordered carne asada...and for starters / dessert we ordered margarita on the rocks! First time here tonight for taco Tuesday! Actually happy hour is 4-7pm Mon-thurs. $1.50 tacos and you get a choice of 8 different meats. Also if you get a cocktail, appetizers are free at the happy hour stand. Nice lady named Daniela serves the tacos. You go up to her and she throws tortillas onto a grill and puts the tacos together for you. Yummmm. Chips and salsa arrive almost right when you sit down. We also ordered guac which was the only setback. Bland ;( but after shaking some salt it was okay. Usually the guac is indicative of how good the restaurant is hence minus a star. We sat in the happy hour portion of the restaurant that is the bar area (there are two areas one for HH one for regular dining but you can still order off the regular menu if wanted.) our waiters were really attentive and very nice. Before we got to the bottom of the chip bowl we had a new bowl full. I had margarita on the rocks which I found to be a tad too sweet. Strawberry blended margaritas that my coworkers had were tasty! Just moved into the area and wanted to have Mexican food for dinner. This restaurant seems to have a loyal following of locals and it has a really nice vibe. They greeted us right away and made sure we had plenty of chips and salsa the whole time. The service was great. Here's where I think they need to improve; the oil used to fry the chips seemed over used and old. The food itself wasn't bad, but it wasn't great either. It didn't seem like they used fresh ingredients. For example I ordered the green enchiladas and the chicken inside had no flavor and tasted like it was canned. The outdoor tables have great shields for both safety and privacy from the street. The ceviche was fresh and a huge portion. We started with salsa which was so fresh and chuncky with veggies. I highly recommend this place on especiallt on a beautiful So Cal night it was perfect to eat with our pups. I was super excited to try this place with my Mom. We barely go out to eat and we were in town for a local Pageant and I decided that I wanted to treat my Mom to some authentic Mexican cuisine while in Monrovia. The hostess was super nice, and when we wanted to change tables the waiter was happy to let us. While waiting for our food a COCKROACH crawled onto our table from the wall. I'm not lying. I notified a waiter as this was happening in a nice manner and he said "oh sorry about that". What????? We ordered ceviche to start and it was good, a hearty portion if I have to say so myself. When we ordered our food we got the Carne Asada plate and "grilled" vegetables. I mentioned to the waiter if I could literally just get some grilled vegetables without oil due to an allergy I have. Most Mexican restaurants do this, but when the waiter heard my request he argued that oil would have to be put on the peppers no matter what or "it was going to be boring". When the veggies came, they were drenched in oil and I didn't eat them. I was so upset, they even looked like they were sautéed and not grilled like I nicely requested. Not only that, the meat that we received was mostly fat and was unseasoned. When the waiter came to collect our meal, he noted that we didn't touch our vegetables, and asked "how come we didn't eat the vegetables". We told him that there was oil on them and even showed him. To top it off he asked if I eat meat and how I deal with the fat and oil that comes on the meat. Honestly at this point we wanted to leave. We got our chips and salsa and drink orders in quickly but that was about the only thing that impressed me about this place. We sat and waited for an unreasonably long amount of time before I approached an older gentleman about having someone to come take our order. Rather than apologize, he said that one of the servers advised him that we needed more time, which is absolutely untrue. Even if that WERE true, someone should've stopped at our table every now and then to check on us, but no one did. The same gentleman eventually came to our table and apologized. I ended not ordering anything because I was unhappy. Salsa is mediocre at best. We would've walked out had my husband not started on his margarita, although I told him I wouldn't have cared leaving at that point. Solid, affordable Mexican fare. I stopped in on a Sunday and although the buffet looked less than desirable, the tostada I ordered was full of fresh toppings and pretty solid. I stuck with the regular size tostada vs the super tostada and glad I did because I was feeling pretty full about halfway through eating it. The drinks had some heavy handed pours and the pricing were reasonable. The house chips and salsa itself was pretty addicting too. Closer to a 3.5 rather than a 3 on the rating. The rice was so, so old and nasty looking. After trying to eat I notice a hair in the middle of the rice!! Nasty place. They charged us over $50 dollars for their nasty dish. The fillings were dry again and yes, not enough cheese. I really don't know if there was a cheese ration or not, but I do know that the Salt & Pepper police really needs to send this restaurant to jail. The chips and pico de gallo were okay ... that's because they used salt and pepper ... but the tomatoes were not fresh. There's a farmer's market outside your door, please use the fresh ingredients. We also ordered the jamica and horchata ... two words ... sugar water. I would only sit through this kind of meal again if it was my niece trying to cook Mexican food with the microwave again. Came here with wife and kids to celebrate Valentine's Day with dinner and a movie. Got here at 6 with a 710 movie start time just up the street at the Kerkorian Theater. We were seated very fast; that's where it ended. Our order was taken within 10 minutes of arrival. We immediately asked for 4 waters. After a 45 minute wait with no food in sight, I asked the server where the order was and told Hume we had tickets for the movies. No effect. He said 5 minutes more! So at about 55 minutes into it, our order came out. I asked for 4 waters and didn't see them until everyone was finished eating 1 and a half hours later. That was after reminding the server 1/2 way through the meal. I actually got up to go get the water myself. We were not able to see the 710 movie in Monrovia and they were so slow we even missed the 740 in Arcadia! Never a freaking-gain!!! read more

This place was horrible, the service, the food, the waiters... all of it, terrible. i would say it took about 15 minutes for us to get greeted, we placed our order and it took about an hour to get our food. once we got our food it all looked like it had been sitting for awhile. I order the albondigas, and the meatballs were crispy dry and the broth was cold from sitting. my boyfriend specifically ordered a burrito with no sauce, and even said completely dry, but they brought him out a wet burrito with sauce and cheese all over it. we said something about the burrito and a new one came out in less than a minute, the plate was completely filled with water, like they had rinsed it off or something... it was so disgusting. the manager was our waiter so we told him what happend, he cut us off and told us to leave. although i am happy we didn't pay, i am still upset and this place needs to do better. i would give this place no stars if i could. read more
