If we were being fair, Rudy's would get zero stars because I never actually had the chance to try it. On Monday night we were CRAVING Mexican food and after reading other yelp reviews we decided Rudy's would hit the spot. We live closer to the upper state location but since their yelp clearly states they close at 9-we opted for the downtown location since they "close" at 10pm. We pulled into the parking lot at 9:14pm to see all the chairs up, open sign off and an employee mopping the floor--needless to say- we were BUMMED! Fast forward a couple days and the Mexican craving hits again-we decide let's try it again-this time...8:40pm, we pulled into the lot, the chairs were up, the employee was mopping...BUT the open sign was on! First Rudy's, used to be good after they opened in '76.....Went last week after a long hiatus, and ALL tables outside were dirty, and hadn't been cleaned off..which was a huge turn off. We ordered anyway, went to the salsa bar, which was messy, and unkept, floor was dirty, and only a couple people there. Counter girl seemed "bothered" when we ordered, and was very busy laughing and being loud with the cooks. Food was microwaved (my beans were burning hot), and very mediocre. When we left 30 minutes later, all the outdoor tables were full of garbage, cups, plates, etc......When was that place last cleaned!!!??! Never will we set foot in Rudy's again! Hope the new downtown Rudy's (where Main Squeeze used to be), will take notice and update their antiquated menu to some new innovative cuisine, and a clean restaurant!!!! read more

Prices were decent cost us 38 for two ppl and we had waayyy to much food we could have easily only spent 20. They also give free chips and salsa with your order. We got a famous beef taco and it was HUGE. The meat was super tender and delicious. We also got a chicken quesadilla chicken was kinda bland but it was still really good and huge. Rudy's at this location (off Montecito) is the STANDARD. Their chicken tacos are a MUST, especially because you really only need ONE to satisfy any hunger! Chips & salsa bar are where it's at -- I don't know what the f. they put on the chips, but they are highly addictive, as is their chicken poblanos, asada for anything especially burritos, and their guac. Rudy's was a good solid middle of the road Mexican restaurant. The dishes were plentiful and the prices were reasonable. The menu had a large variety of Mexican dishes, and i enjoyed the fact they had a salsa bar. The only complaints we had is that the food wasn't very tasty, it was bland with nothing unique. While almost everything seemed to be made fresh (burritos, nachos, tacos) the tamales were very dry and tasted like they had been previously made, frozen and recently microwaved. Based on the low quality of the food, I would typically give a place like this 2 stars. However, considering the large quantities and low prices, I am giving them an additional star. read more

Just had lunch here and it was so delicious! I was looking for a yummy burrito with refried beans! All the other places I saw had whole pinto beans, I want gooey yummy beans! The salsas were perfection, seriously! We loved all of them, didn't try the tomatillo. The horchata was so good! Homemade and not gritty at all. I was longing for La Super-Rica, which I haven't been to in ages, but it is Labor Day and no one answered the phone when I tried to verify if it was open. No regrets, because the grill-blackened poblano and onion tacos and homemade tortillas were every bit as good at Rudy's. Always loved the food. Woman at the front desk however was more than rude to me. When I ordered my combo burrito (the burrito I always order) she asked me what kind and I said again "the combo burrito." It didn't occur to me that she was asking me what kind of meat I wanted. Rudy's tacos are among the best I've had anywhere. This is old-school classic California Mexican food, done with the quality that you just don't find anymore. Rice and beans are something I don't usually order, but did on my first visit here last year and they've been a must-have on each return visit. The beans are better than most, but the rice is just the best, very fluffy and seasoned just right. This location is fast-food/self serve, no alcohol, but the food is miles above most full-service restaurants. The prices are a little high for fast food, but the portions are very large. One taco here is as filling as two tacos most anywhere else. Pair that with the quality and it's an excellent value. If this went national and could keep the quality, it would be the Shake Shack of Mexican food. I regularly make the trek to Rudy's from Los Angeles.
