Felt like uninvited guests.. not really any service besides food being taken to the table for us. Some of the tables were not cleaned (had crumbs), we had to ask for a spoon to stir sugar into tea... spoon was clearly dirty (had dried up food on it). Ambiance was quiet.. like I said, felt like uninvited guests. Tea selection was not good (came before and there were lots of selections before) Scones were good. Newly renovated and rebranded to Truelove. I use to come here to pick up Ruelo patisseries so always knew this location was here. I didn't know that they rebranded to become Truelove though. Ordered high tea sets online as takeaway and came to pick it up. Upon arrival, it was empty and kind of looked like they were still under renovations with no displays of cakes/ pastries in their glass display. The space is beautiful from what I can see and can't wait to see what the finished product will look like. I was warmly greeted and asked to please sit and wait for my pick up order. The nice lady working there insisted that I sit and have some tea while I waited. Shortly after waiting, she then gave me some cookies to go with my tea - super nice! After having some tea and cookies, the high tea sets (we got 3) were finally ready to take home. It came in a cute pink dome covering so I couldn't see what was inside The high tea items were a lot smaller than expected, but they were definitely tasty! There were some spaces that didn't have food in it. Scones were really good with the butter and jam. Overall the items itself were really good and tasty but a little expensive for what it was. She claimed she'd called me numerous times. I advised her I never received any missed calls. I asked why she didn't leave a voice message. She seemed annoyed and said that they don't leave voice messages... REALLY lady, do you want our business or not?!?! We're here, aren't we? We should have just turned around and left, because things just got worse during our stay. We did not receive any tea or coffee until 35 mins after being seated!! During the 2 hours we were there, no one refilled the hot water for our tea. A group of walk-ins walked out after standing around for 10 minutes without being served. This location is very different than their RH branch, it's not in a high foot traffic area and it's hard to find. Turn into the plaza with the brown 449-499 McNicoll Avenue sign, and Ruelo is the third or forth door down. It's located in an industrial looking complex without much signage. You may drive by without noticing (I sure did!). Once inside, the environment is plain and looks slightly like a food court. We were there with a groupon so it was definitely worth the value. The food was at the usual Ruelo standard, and the pastries were delicious. The service was great also, but there was just one girl there making pastries in the back, manning the counter and bringing out food. This is a brand new location of Ruelo that recently opened in an industrial like plaza. Dropped by to pick up some macaroons and this location was packed with tables of customer having afternoon tea. Apparently they had sold over 1000 groupon for 2 for 1 afternoon tea..... Ruelo's macaroons seemed to be getting smaller and smaller over the years! Green Tea Sesame($3) and Earl Grey($2.50) were both really enjoyable. The sesame filling just delish! But seriously at this price I expected more? Maybe they should put that in a box instead of a white paper bag so they wouldn't be damaged in transition before I enjoyed them. I have been to this location a few times now for cakes/macaroons and each time the cakes have turned out well. I didn't like the macaroons too much but the cakes are delicious! My personal favourites have so far been the Ruelo and the Earl Grey cakes. Both cakes are very rich and creamy with the ruelo cake being a lot sweeter. This location is clean and it's never busy as it is situated in an unpopular area that is easy to miss. I have never done high tea in this specific location but they do serve the same items as the Richmond hill store. Like many others, I came here via the Groupon deal but unlike most, I thoroughly enjoyed the high tea (for two) here at Ruelo Patteserie. From a food and tea perspective, what I had was a near flawless experience as I enjoyed and savoured each and every one of the items, including the tea. They have a wide selection of kusmi brand tea to choose from and have small sample tins for you to get an essence and aroma of the tea. So, let's do a breakdown of the set: Level 1 - included 2 each of Fleur de sel (sea salt) macarons, creme brulé, and new york cheese cake. The cheese cake wasn't overly sweet and was light. It tasted like a more dense Japanese cheese cake. I'm neither a big cheesecake nor creme brulé fan but really enjoyed both. Creme brulé was creamy, but not too heavy. We already know Ruelo has excellent macarons. Level 2 - 4 scones and 2 cranberry pastries, served with strawberry jam and clotted cream. These were way better than I expected. They were fluffy, buttery, and soft as a pillow. Level 3 - shrimp mango salad on toast, tuna quiche, smoked salmon on a scone, and some rolled prosciutto. All were excellent albeit bite sized so I'm having some trouble describing those items. The quiche was warm and flakey but I couldn't necessarily taste the tuna. Service was adequate although I didn't have the need to interact with them too much. The waitress explained the items to us right after serving and the interior was clean and simple. The downside is with their pricing and possibly with portions but I probably shouldn't complain because I came with a Groupon afterall. And it is high tea, not lunch! The Groupon was a nice deal but paying the full price of 50 dollars would be bit steep. However, having high tea once in a while would definitely be a real nice treat. So this groupon has been floating around and I decided to finally try it. Ruelo Patisserie is offering afternoon tea for 2 for $27.50. That's a pretty good deal considering afternoon tea can fetch up to $80 at some other places. You just have to make sure to make a reservation and unlike some places, there's no restrictions on when you can make reservations. You can even go on weekends. It's this small unassuming place off McNicoll Avenue. There's a Richmondhill location as well which offers the same groupon deal. The moment we arrived, the person working at the counter (who was also our server) rattled off the rules of the groupon. We have a 1.5 hour seating and tax and tip is not included. By the way, they tax you on the full 'value' of the groupon so $51.98. The groupon allows you to choose between coffee or Kusmi tea. Both the bf and I chose tea. I got the strawberry green tea and the bf got St. Petersburg (Blend of China black teas flavoured with citrus, red fruits and caramel). The selection was pretty good but I wish they had more herbal tea selections. I opted for a green tea even though my caffeine tolerance is quite low. Luckily, it was kinda diluted so...I wasn't affected heavily by the caffeine. Not sure why it took a while for the tier to come since the people who were at Ruelo were already served... Was there only one person working there? But points to them for putting the tiers in the correct order. Or at least the order I believe they should be in. First is the savoury/sandwich plate. It came with Mini Atlantic smoked salmon sandwich on a scone (Ruelo, if you're reading this, please explain why a scone? It took me by surprise and I thought it was some stale bread....), Italian prosciutto wrapped grilled pepper (proscuitto looked pallid but pretty good), Mini shrimp salad sandwich served on a crispy crouton (BP said it was good - I didn't eat it as the onions were overpowering) and the daily quiche (delicious!!). Second plate came with a danish and two scones per person. It also came with devonshire cream and jam. At first I was annoyed that they were on the same plate but it made it easier to mix them so, at the end I was pretty happy. The scones were also pretty good. Finally, the dessert plate came with a green tea red bean cake, crème brûlée and a green tea macaron. About six other tables using the deal while we were there so they were quite busy despite their "Open" sign outside was switched off. Came here for the Groupon Afternoon Tea Deal for $27.50. Three point five stars! This location was kind of difficult to find, but we managed to locate it after five minutes of driving around. First off, it was much more spacious than the Ruelo up in Times Square. I had originally called to the Times Square location to book my high yea, but they said their bookings were all full. The waitress was really nice and let us choose our tea and seat and carefully prepared it for us. The top tier was composed of two of my favourite things: macarons and creme brulee! Unfortunately, the macarons tasted like it was taken out from the fridge, though they gave us green tea macarons, which were my favourite. My day at Ruelo I got a Groupon for my birthday so that I could finally see what all the fuss was about. I had been waiting and waiting to try afternoon tea in all it's grandeur. Visions of women in dresses and gloves and fancy hats engulfed my brain, and I knew this was something I needed to try. And just like me I completely forgot that I had the Groupon until five days before it expired. I knew two things: I had to go, and I had to go soon! The reason why I had forgotten was because I wanted to use it for my friends birthday and I did not know that you needed to book 24 hours in advance. When I called to book the appointment the lady on the other end of the line treated me so poorly that I put the Groupon away and thought it was just not worth it- on principle. But then weeks later when I remembered that I still had it I decided to give it another chance. I called them again only to be treated poorly again! The girl literally picked up the phone when I called and answered me in this manner: ....RING RING...."I am too busy right now! What's your number I'll call you back when I can" I was dumbfounded that someone who must deal with customers and clients would actually answer the phone in this manner! I gave her my phone number and decided even if she called me back I would not go there to give her my business. That's when I glanced at the Groupon I noticed that there were two locations. I decided to give them one more chance. I called RUELO in Toronto and the young woman who answered the phone was nothing short of delightful. I knew that's where I had to go! I booked the appointment and the next day my girlfriend and I were headed for a long trip all the way to finally try afternoon tea. I cannot speak for other people, nor can I understand why people complain about overpriced macaroons. If you downloaded a recipe online and tried making them yourself- would they taste as good as these? I highly doubt it. One cannot measure the price of fine delicacies based on their size- one must also take into consideration time, effort, and technique! Went for the afternoon tea $25 groupon deal. You get to have two different tea flavours. I got the caramel flavoured tea. Didn't like it at first but it grew on me fast and before you know it I was asked for more hot water to be added so I could have more. The $25 groupon gives you a variety of small pastries and desserts to munch on. They all tasted very good. I'm not too sure about the actual terminology but the pastries and desserts were placed in three levels. I will call it a tower. I felt the tower could have used some more desserts so I was thinking of adding some more macaroons to the tower. The ones I wanted to add were $3 each so I let fate decide. If the waitress walked by our table within 1 minute then I would order the extra macaroons. I'm not sure if she overheard us talking but she walked by our table the very next second those words came out my mouth. So we did end up adding two extra macaroons to our tower. Afternoon tea was very decently priced and really like the range of variety, my favorite was the mango and shrimp open face sandwich(or bruschetta?) the sweet tangy mango went great with the shrimp. Scones were of a decent texture as well. However I do think they should improve on their tea selection. When we walked in, we were quickly served by the waitress who explained how the process for high tea worked and we chose our teas. We chose our seats and waited for the food. A different waitress came and said our next group of customer is here and gave us an unpleasant look as she cleared the table and rushed us out the door. My boyfriend and I ordered a black forest cake here for our anniversary. I was very disappointed by the quality of the cake compared to their other signature cakes that I've gotten from their Richmond Hill location. We were very weirded out by their vague ready time by this cake. Upon ordering, they said they have to check with the chefs when they can do this...we called over a week in advance and they couldn't give us a definitive date. It was until the week of, we called and they told us it wouldn't be ready the day we initially wanted it, so we had to go in the day after. I've never had any problems when I ordered from the RH Ruelo. When I arrived at this location, the store seemed closed. The open sign was not on and had very very dim lighting when you look inside (it was 1pm). I went inside and there was an unattended counter, but they were indeed open for business. To be honest, if I weren't picking up a prepaid product, I most definitely would have drove away. The cake consisted of two layers of sponge with cherries and whip in the middle. The top of the cake was full of chocolate shavings. The cake itself tasted fine, but the layering of the cake make little sense to me. The cake middle whipping cream layer was more than 1 inch thick with only cherries as support, it was collapsing and not pretty at all. We requested to have a sign, they gave us a chocolate rectangular sign with edges that weren't even straight or parallel. The writing looks like its from a 5year old boy and it just LAID FLAT over the chocolate shavings. I also got 8 macarons because I wanted something to help me dress up the cake in our pictures...but even with the help, I think any cake you can find at a supermarket for half the price would have beat it in presentation. What we had: various flavours of macarons, mango almond cake (at this location, also had macarons and Ruelo cake at the Times Square location) Taste: 10/10 Ruelo makes good macarons and delicious cakes. They have a list of flavours on their site but not all flavours are available at a time. We have tried: yuzu , ruelo, raspberry, green tea sesame, rose lychee raspberry, cassis, pure chocolate, vanilla, pistachio raspberry, earl grey, and creme brulee. Laura's all-time favourite macaron flavour is their Ruelo macaron. Green tea sesame is also a notable one. The rest are OK but not particularly memorable. The mango almond cake was fruity, fragrant, light, and delicious. The almond cremeux stuff is almost like ice-cream. It was a great artistic cake. We took off 0.5 because one of our macarons had a slight fridge taste. All the others were fine. We then added a bonus 0.5 because the cakes here are so good. Value: 5/10 Their cakes are pricey and the servings they list on their website are waaaaaaaay off. The small cake is supposed to serve 6-8 people? More like 6-8 mice, and that's being generous. We can each decimate a 5' mango almond cake on our own. (Not proud of it, but true facts.) That being said, their cake prices are cheaper and tastier than Nadege, and their single serving cakes are not too expensive (around $6, forget exact price). But think about it, a large bubble tea is about $5, you're paying $5 for a cup of tea. Service/Convenience: 6/10 You need a car to get here. It's tucked away in this little industrial plaza and you won't be able to see it from the street. Not very convenient to get to. I tried this place because I've been dying for some high tea treats and this was the closest one to me that I have yet to try at the time. Found a groupon for it so why not?! aesthetically, the food looked very pleasing and cute. The place was kind of hidden in the plaza... not gonna lie... i got lost a few times trying to find it... The place is way too bright and their blinds are practically useless. The sun was in my face the entire time I was there... The tea selection was average (tea bags). Wasn't expecting much from it to be honest but it wasn't all that terrible. The treats itself was average as well and not a lot of variety. The scones were very soft and crispy at the same time and exceeded my expectations but honestly... i don't really want a whole tier of it... thats a bit much... the sandwiches were also okay, although it kind of looked it was left out for a few hours. very hard and chewy since it was quite hard to bite. the seasonal dessert was okay, but wasn't very memorable. I don't even know what it's called anymore. Overall... it was cheaper then other high tea places, but its true what they say... quality comes at a price. if it wasn't for groupon ($30 something/2 people), i would've never tried it. And I don't think i'm going back again even if i'm desperate for tea time. read more

I came with the groupon, high tea for two. Firstly I found this location service was much better than highway 7, on several times of trying to make a reservation the lady had to call me back & seemed to rush our conversation. My first call to this location the lady was nice & patient & got me a reservation within minutes. The interior is quite nice, it's big & nicely spaced out tables that don't make it seem like you're sitting closely to others The food was surprisingly (since I didn't expect much from reading other reviews) good! The only thing I didn't devour was the scone (personally think it's too dense). I quite enjoyed the food, although the tea was too weak (flavourless TBH). My partner & I also got quite full, we didn't have a large lunch or anything beforehand so! Overall would I come again? Probably not. Not because I didn't enjoy it but it's something I got to try once & don't feel the need to do again? If I crave macarons or whatnot I'll get them separately. Went for afternoon tea here have to say the food was great; however, I would give 1/5 for service. The moment we sat down, no one came to ask which tea we want and after waiting for almost half an hour, we saw other tables walking toward the counter and then we did the same... to order tea... after another half an hour, our 3-tier pastries/dessert finally came... by that time it felt more like diner rather afternoon tea. The mini sandwiches and quiche were very fresh and tasty; second tier was basically all scones, of the same flavour... wish there were more varieties and more cream cheese! The final tier was filled with macron, creme brûlée and tiramisu. My favourite was the tiramisu; it was a perfect balance between the mascarpone cheese and coffee-flavoured cake layer... yet they only gave us one small piece to share between two people... This is place is alright. Very difficult to find as there are no signage above the store. The food is average (the chocolate macaron was soggy inside) and the service was alright. What I did notice when I went here for high tea was, the women (Caucasian) working in the kitchen was bringing out two towers for high tea, she set one down on the counter behind the cashier and saw that there was some things in the way for her to set the second one down so she used her free hand and started throwing the objects into a pile very aggressively. It was not pleasant to watch - we understand you may be busy with other tasks but how would your customers feel if they see you acting this way? Perhaps you hate your job? You'd hate it even more if there were no customers therefore no job! Let's just say if I didn't have a Groupon, I wouldn't come. read more

The foods are great; however, the reservation is horrible. We have been tried several times to call and hoping to get a reservation as we wished, they are either saying the schedule isn't out for next month and can't booked it now and we have to call in couple weeks to check again (coz we had tried to call and book 2 weeks in advance but not successful), or it has to follow their schedule, not even allowed 15 minutes behind (coz has to pick up the kids from weekend activities; even we told them we could shorter the time for staying and they said NO). We finally make it and there is only one staff on duty, poor her has to take care 3 groups at the same time, which also means we have to wait a very long time to get our drinks and foods. Actually that's ok, we are supposed to be relaxing, however, I don't know why they aren't allowed us to come a bit later as we were waiting anyway. Actually I don't think I will come again or recommend at all due to their busy schedule, plus the lady who accepts reservation is pretty rude, even their foods is good. After checking this new place out in my hood, it was a let down. It looked pretty from the outside, but I was disappointed in the food and prices. The macaroons were good but nothing amazing- overpriced. The one my friend had a bit of a freezer burnt taste so that was weird. Overall, the pricing of the stuff was ridiculous. Wouldn't recommend it for those reasons plus the possibility of a freezer burnt macaroon. Ironically, a girl I work with told me after I went that there used to be a Ruelo in her neighbourhood (Yonge & Eglinton) but closed down less than a year of opening because it was getting bad wrap for their food and service. I saw their Groupon for High Tea for two people and decided to come here with my boyfriend after our morning at the Driving Range. I made reservations for the 3:30 pm session on this past Sunday. I have to say this McNicoll location was not easy to find. It was located in an Industry Park, which I thought was kind of a weird location for a pastry cafe. Their signage was not very helpful either, as I drove past it at least twice before we found the place. But, have to say plenty of parking available. When you walk in the space is very spacious and calm. The only issue was the constant humming noise in the background, which I think is from the fridge area in the front counters. The quality of tea used was good. They use the Ksumi tea brand. The items in the high tea was good. I enjoyed the savory sandwiches, it was nicely done. The deserts were good too. But my lease favorite of the deserts was the macaroon. Our server told us that the macaroon was earl grey flavor, I really didn't taste any earl grey, I only tasted the chocolate filling. Overall, I thought the high tea here was good. Would I come back, probably. read more
