Ruff House Rescue Rocks Amazing experience fostering and Foster failing / Adopting our lil female Chihuahua Savanah! Diane and team are a top notch Rescue team. We watched 7-8 different families adopting and picking up new foster babies We had witnessed a full team effort and very organized group. Ruff fully checked my creds, ref, even came for physical inspection of home! So in early October, my boyfriend and were looking to adopt a dog. One of my coworkers who volunteers at Ruff House recommended me to look here and also my boss adopted from here as well. We looked online and on their Instagram to see what dogs they have available and filled out an application. The process: within 48 hours we were contacted by a volunteer who conducted a phone interview asking about our home life, jobs and experience. As first time potential dog owners, I was nervous and had a bunch of questions that were answered. After that a home volunteer came later that week to check if our home was safe and asked where the dog would sleep. After that, we were invited to come to Petco in Levittown to check our dogs. We found one that we like but we were going away on vacation - but they don't hold dogs. It kind of was a little hectic to figure out who was going to be at Petco and which dogs we wanted to meet to make sure they were there. The events are only held at Petco in Levittown on weekends because the shelter is way too small. Adoption day: we wanted to meet 2 dogs on Saturday and reached out to the adoption counselor that morning and she was unsure if they were going to be there. So I've learned it's better to ask beforehand or just go to the event with an open mind. The dog we were hoping to meet was adopted right before we got there so I was bummed. My boyfriend really liked one dog who was in her crate and I was hesitant. They offered us to take the dog out of the crate with a volunteer to see how she was in a situation that was too crazy with all the other dogs and tons of people. She was snuggly instant and just wanted to be loved. I'm glad we came with an open mind and ended up adopting a dog who wasn't on our radar. We were required to buy a collar and a double side tag there. We also weren't told how to pay before the event but luckily they took Venmo. You can pay with cash or credit card with an addition fee. Thank you Ruff House for bringing us Stormie! My one piece of advice is don't be so fixated or fall in love with a picture. Go to the event with an open mind and find the connection and the right fit for you and your family!

BUYER BEWARE* Not quite what we hoped for to be honest, so me and my wife along with our 4 year old daughter brought home a puppy (5 month old) so they say, their descriptions are not correct, the ad also said 8lbs he was 20lbs we had him weighed, we went and met him on a Saturday and we took him home, while we were there we noticed he had a bit of limp on his back left leg, they told us it was from the neuter surgery he had and it would go away, well fast forward a few days and it got worse he could barely walk on it but that's not why we brought him back, he just turned out not to be the correct dog for our family, he showed aggression towards me and our daughter but not my wife which is ok he was protective and I get it , so we ended up bringing him back again he just was not the right puppy for us, I was told we could look at other dogs and that our 630$ fee was transferable to another pup, so we were looking and they have some golden retriever/lab mixes we were interested in when we saw them on an instagram story they posted , 3-4 month old (not much different from the age of theone we brought home, but a bigger size dog with aggression is completely different from a smaller puppy nibble from playing) well now I'm being told the owner thinks that a younger puppy is not for us which is not the case, we want a smaller puppy to be able to play and grow up with our daughter in a happy forever home, the owner is basically acting as if she knows what's best for our family, meanwhile my wife has had dogs her whole life and my daughter knows the rights and wrongs of being around one, and we are basically being forced to only see dogs they want us to see, I have reached out to the owner and what a shocker no response, so now we are out of a dog and I am out of 630$ for the dog plus everything we bought to give the dog a happy and healthy home all in all around 1100-1300$ on food toys a bed etc. I would highly highly recommend looking for a dog somewhere else, the one we took home did not bite but he was very aggressive towards our kid, he would snarl and bark at her when she would do simple things as walk by,he was just not meant for kids, and of course they put him back up on their website without the proper information! anyone being a parent would have had some concerns themself, something just did not sit right with us, as you can see from these messages, as anyone knows this isn't like buying a piece of candy, you are looking to pick and choose a dog that best suites your family and life! This is also not the owner I am speaking with I don't know her name but through the messages back and forth she has been great and I understand she is just relaying the messages, which another thing the owner herself should have reached out but hasn't and won't, don't be like us and ignore the bad reviews, do not give this place your time or money

Diane sent me a text last night. responded and she immediately blocked me. So I figured I'd post the text message here! Hi Diane. Thanks for checking in on the two dogs we bought from you. Yes bought for $922.I submitted an application for a lab mix I saw online. I never heard back. A month later I saw another dog posted. I asked if you were behind on applications I was waiting to hear back another dog. Lance. He wasn't adopted. I filled out another application. Lance had heartworm. Someone came to our house to do a home visit. Walked all around my house and wanted to know if I was hiding any pets upstairs? Umm, no? Huh? Kicked my fence, video recorded us told us the food we have to feed a dog. Also asked us about our vet that we use. She knew the vet and said I should really go to yelp and look them up. I mean, your yelp reviews are all amazing! Right? Tells us to get all of this done. Tonight. There's an adoption even the following day. We fixed whatever she wanted us to fix. Showed her it was done but she didn't really seem to care. The next day we go to the adoption event. A volunteer greets us. I tell them the two dogs were interested in. When I spoke to the person on instagram I advised that I may be interested in taking both dogs. The volunteer tells me these two dogs don't get along. She's surprised that I'm surprised. No one told us they don't get along. They take them out and they seem to get along. We are sent home with two dogs that day to foster. A teenage volunteer mentions how she's glad. That Lance is going home. He was bought and returned once. I should have listened to this red flag. I asked why? She said the people said he went after their child. But you know we don't believe them. They just didn't want the responsibility of having a dog and changed their mind. She mentioned it to another volunteer who seemed annoyed that she would tell us this information but confirmed those people were lying. The one dog hadn't been seen by a vet yet. I'm surprised he was fostered out without seeing a vet. He was marked as not neutered. He was clearly neutered. I have to make an appointment for his 4DX. He ended up having heart worm as well. He wasn't neutered. But that had to wait until after his heartworm treatment. When the one dog was on Doxycycline he got terrible diarrhea. We had to sleep on the couch so we could let him out every 2 hours. And sometimes he didn't make it. So we were cleaning up poop all the time around the house. I felt absolutely awful for him. I kept contacting the foster phone for medicine for him. Finally, after a week I was given medication. Which I had to go pick up myself. A week! A couple of months go by and the lab mix, Lance starts growling and showing his teeth at my husband. He was not able to go by him. I contact Ruffhouse who tells me he has no history of that. He obviously does. We were told about it. I was contacted everyday that I needed to adopt them. I was hesitant to adopt Lance because of the issue with my husband that day. But I did love them so we adopted them. One day, I came home from work. Let Lance out. A couple of hours later I let him out again. He completely turned on me. Snarled growled and showed his teeth to me. Chased me for the back door. I was corned inside my house. I was able to squeeze myself into my bathroom and slam the door shut. I contacted every phone # I had for Ruffhouse. The foster # I was blocked (my friend lives in Las Vegas and was able to call and get right through). Everyone said someone would call me back. No one did. The following day I called Ruffhouse every hour on the hour hysterically crying. This was so devastating to me. But I needed help and I was no longer comfortable keeping Lance and having him in my home. I signed a contract that I couldn't rehome or bring him to a shelter. So I needed someone from Ruffhouse to get him. 24 hours I was ignored. Again I could not keep him. I was no longer comfortable. The person who kept answering my phone call each time told me someone will call me back. Finally at 6 pm I spoke with my vet. I explained the situation. He called Ruffhouse himself to see if anyone wanted to take this dog back and he was told "we spoke with the family" No one spoke to me. I was ignored!!!! The vet explained that if I was not comfortable and if I was nervous that if he did go back to Ruffhouse they would turn around and adopt him out again, the best decision would be to unfortunately have him put to sleep. With tears streaming down my face I held him while he took his last breath.i could never forgive myself if Lance mauled a child. And I wanted his ashes anyway. I loved him. TWO DAYS later I get an email from Joanne Tully saying Diane had asked her to contact me and ask how she can help me. Two days later! I have asked for my $150 neuter deposit back and have also been ignored. I had to cut a lot out of this to make it fit.

My fiancé and I had an amazing experience with Jodie from Ruff House rescue. We applied to many dogs from many organizations and did not hear from anyone and thought we might have to do another round of applications in hope of getting a dog. We then got a call from Jodie following up on our application for Cutes (now Archie) we had done two weeks earlier, she had recently brought him home from Ruff House to her home as her new foster pup. She reviewed our application, and spent time getting to know us over the phone. We all felt we were a good match for Cutes but we would not know until we could meet. She invited us to her home and was clear that we were not committing to the dog and we could spend as much time playing with him in her office as we needed to make our decision. You could see how much Jodie loves dogs, she had a senior foster in addition to two dogs of her own in her home. They were all happy, healthy and extremely loved. We loved getting to know Jodie and hearing how Cutes was her 70th foster over 7 years. She told us to keep in touch and we have sending updates and photos over this first week. We are madly in love with Archie and couldn't be more grateful to Ruff House and Jodie for picking us to be his parents.

We cannot thank Ruff House Rescue enough for matching us with our new adoptee Yem (previously Lilo). We had a size requirement because of our apartment building. Ruff House Rescue volunteers thoughtfully guided us to find a dog that fit this specification. I love how they try to match the right dog with your family's needs. They were extremely responsive. Once we were approved to adopt, the process moved really fast. If anyone is getting antsy post submitting the application, I implore you to be patient! It will happen! I found that they have many more dogs for adoption than other rescue orgs in the area, which is a large reason why I would suggest adopting with them. Thank you Ruff House Rescue!

Thanks to Ruff House Rescue rescuing Scout from the streets in Texas, we have a new little bundle of joy in our lives. They made the adoption process smooth and easy. They covered all the important details and answered all the additional questions i had even post adoption. A friend recommended this place so a few of us came to volunteer. The location is lovely and very relaxing so walking dogs around this neighborhood can be a treat. As for the dogs, they seem to be treated very well considering their circumstances and the amount of dog space that this place can hold. Their shelter and dogs also seem pretty clean, organized and not over crowded. My only suggestion though are the staff. They're a bit rough and not very friendly. They also don't communicate very well when we arrived and had us waiting around for a while before telling us what to do. Though the rewards for helping and volunteering is always priceless so if I have to deal with human personalities then so be it. Their dogs are definitely a treat. Super cute and will definitely put a smile to your face so yeah give this place a change, check them out and help out if you can!!

IF YOU'RE A PERSON OF COLOR AVOID. I rarely ever write Yelp review and for me to do so for a pet shelter is unexpected. I applied for a puppy yesterday and at 10 PM at night I received an odd e-mail about me not being eligible due to covid and my location. Please note the screen shot that I'm about a 10 minute drive from this shelter. This shelter asks for your social media information and, as I have nothing to hide, gladly shared it with them. To my surprise my Instagram account is blocked from this page. It's unfortunate that an organization would use the pandemic as a shield for racism. In between cleaning up cat urine, I hope whoever made this decision reflects on their discriminating practices.

We adopted our newest puppy from Ruff House Rescue upon seeing pictures posted on Facebook. Immediately, we made arrangements to stop by. At first we were taken aback when reading their requirements. However, after we had all the photos, and videos of our home and property and other dogs we were invited to stop by. Melissa gave us a short tour of her establishment and a brief history. It is obvious that she is very concerned that every adoption made is with suitable responsible families. We then made arrangements to bring our dogs to meet the puppy to insure that there would be no aggressive behavior towards each other. Ruff House Rescue also had our puppy spayed and chipped. I am sure some might think that all of the steps that are required by Ruff House Rescue to be a bit excessive to be considered, however it was worth it. Melissa is very passionate in saving the lives of these animals and we are very grateful to have proven to her that our home would be a great fit for another puppy. Our animals are more then pets, they are part of our family. More importantly, they all seem to love each other and have fun playing with each other indoors and outside. After being recommended to this organization, I have to say I am very disappointed. It took an extremely long time to even get a response, just to get turned down without an explanation. I understand that you're overwhelmed, but by telling me that my home/ I aren't suitable for a puppy without explanation is rather odd and unprofessional. I can't help but feel as though this organization is homophobic and judgmental. I sincerely hope these pups find themselves in a nice home, as they just missed out on one that would care for them above all else. We obviously don't have kids, and have countless years of experience with medium-large sized dogs. We have a gigantic backyard and OWN a house for the puppies to have plenty of room and exercise. I'd say thank you for your consideration, but this automated/ impersonal email made me feel as though my application wasn't even reviewed. It's such a shame that this company doesn't value a loving home for their dogs/puppies. Plenty of other agencies have gotten back to me already and we are bringing a puppy home soon. But my disgust for this organization and their "checklist" can not be overstated. I sincerely hope these puppies/ dogs are finding good homes and not just ones that match the ideology of the representative and their offensive checklist. read more

After going through the process at Ruff House and adopting our beautiful girl, I believe that the negative reviews here are inaccurate. Susan M suggested a great dog for us. We weren't pressured into accepting any dog, we were able to wait until the right one came along. The folks at rhr work very hard and are all volunteers. They do a fantastic job. read more

A month after applying, after several email inquiries, I received an email that they could not process my application due to the overwhelming number of applications- yet they continue to accept applications and post on Facebook that they need adopters, showing dogs in tiny cages. They will not respond to email inquiries. The email mentioned that they cannot adopt long distance, yet I live in Nassau County. I tried to contact them to say that they may have made an error with my application and they have not responded. I have applied to other rescues, and none have been as unresponsive as this one, and I now have an approved application with another organization who approved me less than 24 hours after submitting an application online. It seems that Ruff House prefers to keep dogs in cages and ask for donations while ignoring those who wish to adopt and can give a dog a good home. read more

I love my new puppy, Steven, formerly Balto so much. You will read many bad reviews about this shelter for turning down applications, but they are just looking out for the dogs. This, in fact, is a sign of a good rescue. They are making sure the dogs have a nice safe home. Many rescuers/ potential rescuers, will have the same problem anywhere else. Within 20 minutes our application was approved and we were in the phone with Jodie, a volunteer. Although it was a long experience it was 100% worth it to have my sweet special pupper. After loosing our precious rescue Alex of almost 16 plus years and taking time to mourn him...we decided our home was always alive with the presence of a dog. Now while we still mourn Alex and even call our new guy (JAX) Alex we are so over the top that we went through with this adoption. I trolled the internet and got my hands slapped at the beginning. But then we agreed to get serious. We talked to a few rescue groups and appreciate the commitment of all of them to this rescue effort. But I must say from the very beginning of the application process( taken by a volunteer on vacation no less with her family when she emailed and emailed again to complete the painless approval process), to the meet and greet and our guy going home with that same evening...we just can't say enough good things. Melissa is super and with dogs running and prepping for a weekend adoption event she still took time to spend time with us and make sure every aspect of the adoption was covered. JAX , once known as Gino is a CHIJAX 10 LB 15 month old treasure. He was taken from a shelter in Houston and brought east with several other beauties in late June. I saw a few of those guys and gals that are ready to go home with the right person. Listen this is not a paid political announcement. I am always the skeptic. The people at Ruff House are the real thing..dedicated in what they do and any money you pay to support them through an adoption fee is exponentially worth it!!! read more

If you're looking to adopt a sick dog, RHR is the place to go. They are more interested in getting dogs into homes and adoption fees in their pockets than the actual health and well being of the animal. The owner is rude, lacks empathy and will try to point fingers before accepting any responsibility for their own wrong doings. Horribly unorganized organization and I would give them 0 stars if I could. POTENTIAL ADOPTERS BEWARE! read more

I recently adopted Quentin and I cannot be happier to have this little Sunshine home. The adoption process was smooth, everybody was very helpful, responded to emails quickly and very informative. My boyfriend and I rescued our dog Luna from this shelter. She is a beautiful shepard mix. They made the process so easy and they spent a lot of time making sure that our home was the right fit for this dog. We could tell that Luna had really bonded with the staff of Ruff House and that they were treating the dogs their with lots of love! There aren't enough words to express how positive our experience has been with Ruff House Rescue! We went to one of their events and fell in love with a puppy and were lucky enough to adopt him. Ruff house goes above any beyond is setting up their applicants for success (helpful shopping list, detailed medical records, leash & collar) and even take the time to follow-up with their adopted pups! This organization is doing amazing things for animals and if you're planning to adopt they are a great place to start! read more

If you work or have a child they won't let you adopt. It's one thing to make sure that a dog is going to a decent safe home but it's another thing to try and basically tell someone they're unfit to handle a dog because they have small children and work. Mary is extremely unprofessional. Also, they don't answer their phone and it can take days for a response about a dog (sometimes no response at all) - I've never had an experience like this with an organization that's supposed to be finding fit and loving homes for homeless dogs; and been told me I'm basically unfit to care for a dog. I'd go to another adoption agency. read more

I am a 2 time adopter from RHR and a current foster mom. They have amazing unpaid volunteers that make rescuing a full time job on top of their very own jobs. Covid has hit the rescue business in soo many ways but I see they have re-adjusted to make sure these babes go home safely while still protecting the public without compromising the thorough application process. We all hope to be back to normal soon and more doggies and families will find their forever. Keep up the great work Ruff House. read more

I want to thank everyone at Ruff House (Paige, Lisa, Melissa and foster mommy Elisabeth) that helped us adopt our sweet Malinois/Shepherd mix, Lyla. I adopted Rosie, now Lyla, two months ago and can appreciate the lengths this rescue goes to that ensures the pups are given good homes. Our family was fully vetted, our veterinarian was called, our references were called, and we did a tour of our home. Know ahead of time that this is not a quick process as they are very thorough. We met Lyla at an adoption event (meet and greet) and within the week were able to bring her home. For those leaving negative reviews, think about what this rescue does to obtain these dogs, the expense, the time, the sweat, and the emotion...every effort is made to make sure these babies are given good furever homes. I wish I could give these people zero stars. They are disgusting in the way they treat their rescues and the good people who want to care for them. I chose to foster to adopt. RHR gave me this dog without giving any sort of paperwork. They had no idea the age of the dog nor what type of food the people at the kennel were feeding her. They sent me home with a sandwich bag full of pills with an index card with the name "doxy" handwritten on it. I was given three different reasons why this dog was on medication (worms, tick bite, and kennel cough). This dog didn't have kennel cough so it's either worms or a tick bite. Once I brought the dog home, I realized she was bleeding from an incision on her belly. I immediately called Melissa and only then found out that the dog was spayed days beforehand. I texted a picture to Melissa and I was in the phone with her while she was speaking with Diane about it and they didn't seemed concerned at all for the wellbeing of the dog. They told me to put neosporin on it and leave her in the crate. Days later I called and again expressed my concern of infection. Again, told the same thing, keep her crated. I was told they wouldn't pay for my vet to look at the dog and they didn't feel it necessary for the dog to see theirs. When I questioned Diane about why we were never told about when the spay was done and why the dog didn't have a cone on or even stitches days after surgery, her answer was, stitches dissolve. So she disregarded all my other questions, probably because she didn't have an answer that could come close to making sense. Also dissolvable stitches don't dissolve within days, maybe a week but not days. I continually requested her medical records because of all this information that didn't add up and I was blatantly ignored. Last straw was when the dog bit my dog and she was limping for the rest of the night. My dog is old and this RHR dog is young and playful. She isn't a bad dog but I couldn't have her hurting my dog. So I called Diane to see about someone picking their dog up. She told me to drop her off at 8:00 at night. I live atleast 30 mins away and it's a school night so , I would not be able to. I asked for hours they were open and tried to organize a time when I could drop the dog off. She wouldn't listen to me while I was speaking, she just talked over me as I was talking. After her screaming at me to "just throw my kids and the dog in the car and drop the dog off", I had to hang up on her. She then continued with texting telling me to drop her off. I DO NOT advise anyone to ever deal with Ruff House Rescue. I question everything about this place and if they should be in this business. They don't seem like they care for the animals at all. Their total lack of concern for the surgical site opening up is borderline abusive. The staff is nasty and unwilling to help. Stay far away from these people. read more

My husband and I completed an application and received a call from an adoption coordinator. She said that she would have someone call to do a home visit. That never happened. In the meantime, I looked on their website and saw a few dogs we were interested in. I texted her and several days later she said that one of the dogs was cat tested and it didn't go well. Ok. I told her were interested in another dog that was being fostered by a family that my cousin knew. She then proceeded to mistakenly text me a message clearly meant for someone else saying, "That was from Kim Miller (10 cat lady ). I texted her that Louie doesn't get along with cats and it wouldn't work then she sent me this. This is ridiculous." When I called her on her unprofessional behavior she tried denying that she used the word ridiculous and THEN said it didn't pertain to me. Well, which is it?? Your didn't say it or it wasn't meant for me?? When I texted her back her OWN message, she clearly realized she was caught in her own lie. Haven't heard from her since. If this is the way they conduct business, it's no wonder why people continue to buy dogs rather than adopt. That's just sad. Needless to say, we have withdrawn our application to Ruff House Rescue. read more

UPDATE 9/1/17: Diane is texting me personally, calling me slanderous names and threatening to falsify a negative review about my company. Dear Melissa & Diane, I support your mission and believe you are well-intentioned but your contract is a deal-breaker. It is overzealous, poorly written, unlikely to be enforceable and reflects badly on your organization and dog adoption in general. I own a business and have negotiated hundreds of contracts and this is the worst one I have seen. My adopted dog DaVinci is my son who I have raised for 13 years and I know what's best for him - if you tried to enforce this contract with him - there's nothing I wouldn't do to fight you. Specifically it is: Far more overreaching than adopting a human baby! Google "human baby adoption contract". Violates the basic tenants of "adoption". Instead, it is a restricted lease with no option to buy. Violates common law about "ownership of a dog". Additionally Ruff House must represent and warrant: Ruff House owns the dog and can transfer ownership. The microchip tracking account will be transferred. You will provide any and all medical records. The dog is up-to-date on rabies, heartworm, shots. The dog is currently licensed in NY. There are no pending actions, suits, judgements involving the dog. The contract becomes invalid upon Ruff House closing, any of its officers being convicted of a crime, the dog suffers harm due to Ruff House, or Ruff House failing to exercise any of their rights within 12 months. Please guide yourself accordingly: Withdraw my adoption application. Delete my personal information. read more

I have never gone out of my way to post a negative review on any company on organization. However, I think I need to share my experience so that potential families looking to adopt/rescue can beware of this organization. 4 years ago, I was looking to rescue a puppy while I was living with my parents. We had dealt with ruff house then, and they left a sour taste in my mouth. The volunteers were nasty and abrasive when we showed concern about our potential pup having heartworm. We ended up rescuing from furbabies, who were wonderful to work with. 4 years later I live on my own, ready to make an addition to my family. I filled out an application and quickly heard back from a volunteer. The volunteer did not ask me any personal questions as to how I would raise the dog or methods of training. She told me she would put me in contact with someone to make a home visit and then I can meet the puppy at the adoption event that weekend and take it home. No home visits were possible. I immediately showed hesitation because I am a firm believer that it is important to have a bond with a dog; how can I pick a pet based on a picture? When I was contacted by someone to make a home visit, I said that I would like to just wait a few days until I met the puppies and had a better idea of which one I would like to take home. "We are a no pressure shelter!, not a problem!" Great, that sounded so nice to hear. I go to the adoption event and find two adorable potential pups that I am interested in. However, the adoption event at Petco was a very stimulating environment. The puppies are over stimulated by people, smells, other puppies etc. If I am going to choose a family member to have in my home for 15 years, I want to make sure I am making the right choice! I contact the volunteer who dealt with my application to let them know the two puppies I was interested in--wondering if it is possible to do a home visit with one of them so that I can confirm this was the right pick. No answer-- I contact the woman who called to schedule the home visit, she texts me back saying that she is going to call me soon. No answer-- Many days pass- I am envisioning my little puppy sleeping in my bed with me and running around my backyard. I continue to call and text both volunteers with no answer. I eventually receive an email saying that my application was denied. -- no reasoning at all. I understand that I may have shown some initial hesitation before meeting the puppies, but once meeting them, we knew what we wanted. It was completely unprofessional that no one contacted me or gave me any reason as to why I was denied adoption. There was no thorough investigation as to how we would be as pet parents, no home visit to see living conditions. I feel bad for all of the potential puppies that could have gone to good and loving homes because the organization is so poorly run. They make "adopt don't shop" a painful and discouraging process. read more

DON'T ADOPT FROM HERE!!! First I must say that because we work Ruff house told us we cannot adopt a puppy. We have plenty of time off but because we provide for our family and would have financial stability we were not qualified for a puppy. So we go to an adoption event where we were under the impression that all dogs there were ready for adoption. We find this beautiful 1 year old dog. They let us walk it around. She gets a chip and we got to the adoption check out counter ( we filled out an application prior, had a phone interview, and home check). They say the dog may still be on meds for kennel cough. They check and she finished her meds but they only want us to foster to adopt. We took the dog home and within a day or two she was very tired, sleeping a lot, and wobbly when walking. We emailed Ruff House every night as per foster agreement. I kept saying please take her to the vet they say give it time. If we were allowed I would have taken the dog to the vet right away. So the dog gets worse instead of better. We had other animals before and knew the dog needed medical attention but Ruff House kept saying give it time. So now I come home the dog had diarrhea and was shaking. Now we very firmly say take the dog to the vet now. So we met them at the shelter and they took the dog. I kept contacting them to see if they took the dog to the vet ( they never contacted me I had to reach out to them) and they said they were monitoring her. After a week they finally told me they took the dog to the vet and she had distemper and will probably not make it or if she does make it she will have neurological problems. They never called me to tell me this I had to keep calling them. Then when do they call me back to tell me this horrible news at 12 pm during work. Not a good time or place to deal with horrible news. We were devastated! This dog was always sick and should never been up for adoption until it was cleared. Why did they keep pushing off taking this dog to the vet? They unfortunately had to put the dog down the next day. So my husband and I decided to give them another chance. We go back to try and adopt again we picked a dog we saw at the adoption event last time we were there. We thought oh this was meant to be poor dog didn't get adopted. We walk it around seems like a great dog so we go to adopt it and they say the dog has a broken femur and needs surgery! So why was this dog at an adoption event? Was it ready to go to a home to be adopted, no! Two dogs we wanted to adopt but were really not ready for adoption. I'm still very upset that they had a dog with distemper on their premisses and could have infected other dogs. Then we got close with this dog to only have it die a week later. They have too many dogs and cannot monitor or manage all of the dogs properly. I went to other shelters which had a smaller amount of dogs and it was more organized and each dog was well monitored and taken care of. Please don't go here. They have way too may dogs, put dogs up for adoption that are clearly not ready or medically cleared and then put off taking dogs to the vet, but they claim they care about the dogs! I read other reviews that said the same thing about Ruff House. After I posted my review Ruff House actually texted my husband and told him to asked me to take down my negative review!!! I've been hesitant to post this review but I honestly feel the need to get my story out there. In the beginning, everything went well with Ruff House. I was working with a sweet woman named Karen, via telephone, who was helping me get more info about adoptable dogs. She responded quickly, was professional and sweet. I was interested in this one pup and went to see her at one of their adoption events as they DO NOT have a shelter you can go visit and look around. You are only able to go to their events which take place on the weekends. There is no room you can go meet the dog in, you can only take the dog for a walk around the store. That's not a fair way of meeting a dog and seeing if they would be a good fit for the dog. Anyway, I went to the Petco in Levittown to go see the dog I was interested in and things went OK. The dog was A LOT bigger than she looked online and I had brought my dog with me so they can meet one another (which is a must if you adopt a dog.) Honestly, I was far more interested in the dog than my boyfriend was. It was his first dog and I could tell he wasn't "feeling" this dog. The woman who sits at the table at the events, unsure of her name, called the woman Pat who is in charge of fostering to see if we would be eligible to see if we could do a 24 hour foster so see if this dog would be a good fit in the long run. Now we know that 24 hours is NOT a fair enough time to give a dog chance to fit into the family, but we were granted the 24 hour stay by Pat. We filled out some paperwork and brought this dog home to see if it would work. As soon as we got home, she was all over my dog and being a little too aggressive with him. She was twice his size and she was far more interested in my other dog than she was with us. She showed 0 affection to my boyfriend and I and all she wanted to do was wrestle with my dog. Now it being that this would be my boyfriends first official dog, he wasn't interested. He knew this wasn't "the dog" we've been searching for. I texted Karen that night to give her the update that things weren't going well. She told me that dogs need time to adjust and it takes a month or two. We only had about 16 hours left with the dog to make the decision. All night long, the new dog was continuously all over my dog and my dog was seriously fed up. Sadly, we knew this wasn't going to work out. I brought this pup back to the Petco where they were having the adoption event for the second day and it seriously sucked because I was embarrassed to bring this dog back but also because it sucked only trying the dog out for 24 hours. I was crying when I handed her over to the same woman who was sitting at the table and Pat. It looked like Pat was understanding but the woman at the table was annoyed. A few days later I reached out to Karen and told her the bad news about the dog and I mentioned a few other dogs I was interested in coming to look at that were a lot smaller than the other pup. She took a while to get back to me but ended up saying "I'll call you tomorrow." Which I didn't think anything of, so I replied "okay". That was the last time I heard from Karen. The next day I received a phone call from the nastiest human being I've ever spoken to. I would post her name but then my post would be deleted and I need people to see this post before they deal with Ruff House. If there's an option to private message me, I have no problem telling you all about this horrible and nauseating human being. She calls me and tells me that Ruff House will no longer deal with my boyfriend and I due to the fact that we "are unfit" and "not ready to have a dog". (I have two dogs, my parents have a dog, my brother has two dogs, etc. Don't tell me I'm not ready for a dog when my life revolves around them.) The unpleasant woman continues to tell me that it was unfair we returned the dog within 24 hours. I told her we had authorization for a 24 hour stay and she asked "who granted you that". So obviously she didn't know what she was talking about and thought I had adopted the dog and brought her back the next day when I really fostered her for 24 hours. She continuously told me how I wasn't prepared and ready for this commitment and she told me she was calling as per the director of the shelter, Diane. I asked to have Diane call me so I could clear the air with her and continue with my adoption but I never heard from Diane. This was my experience with Ruff House and I will forever retain people I know from going there due to the fact they gave me authorization to try out a dog for one day and then penalized me for bringing the dog back. The way the nasty woman spoke to me on the phone was so unprofessional and how she is still working for them blows my mind. In the end, when adopting the RIGHT dog, this isn't the place to go to. read more

DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME!! ZERO STARS!! First I'll start with their extremely high fee, which was more than double what I paid for my puppy's fee at the ASPCA. What an absolutely terrible, unprofessional staff. My boyfriend and I of 2 years live in NYC and rent an apartment, we are 26/27 years old. We went to the adoption event at Petsmart which was a complete disaster.. it started at 1, people all standing around waiting until the first dog showed up at 1:30. They had non-volunteers doing more work than the actual volunteers with tasks for setting up. There was complete madness, no waiting line, just people scattered around angrily wanting to see some puppies. We were extremely patient; even though we were one of the first ones there and only got to see one puppy; I asked about our application to Melissa and she said I'll let you know there may be a problem with your application. So we wanted to discuss it. After another hour, still standing there, I finally went back up to the desk, and patiently asked "hey I just want to know what's going on, I don't want to waste anyone's time including my own if I'm not going to move forward".. after 2.5 hours she finally told me to email her and we will discuss it over the phone. I was dumbfounded at the fact she couldn't tell me that 1.5 hours ago when we first addressed it to her. So here's the best part: later that night I emailed her to follow up on the application and I received 2 emails in the same minute, one message for me, the other was apparently NOT for me. Please see the pictures attached to the post. Melissa is completely unorganized and rude and useless. I never received a call to discuss the application and to be quite honest, I don't believe she is a good fit to be working in a customer service role. Absolutely terrible experience, I would never dare step foot near their facility. We went to the ASPCA for our beautiful girl Callie, the adoption fee is $200 or less, new puppies and kittens are always getting transferred in. The staff was AMAZING! The whole process was so simple and they were very thorough. They had a volunteer walk us through one group at a time and throughly explained each puppy to us. In 2 hours we were in and out; they gave us a collar and leash and registered her NYC license for us. They also gave us a free wellness visit and vouchers for her last shot to be done there for free. DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME AT RUFFHOUSE, definitely look elsewhere!!! read more

I applied to adopt several cats, and was told I did not meet internal guidelines. Upon inquiring further I received a rather brief, unprofessional email stating "We do not approve adoptions fo dorms. Ever."by Mary. Granted, this is a very temporary living situation as I am currently in Medical School but will be graduating soon. In addition, my building has multiple units and I an additional expense to currently live alone in a spacious two bedroom apartment with a kitchen and bathroom. For an organization "who seek to save as many lives as possible, as fast as we can", you're quite particular. In addition, despite their aforementioned purpose, a phone call directs you to a full mailbox where you cannot leave a voicemail. read more

If I could give negative stars I would. My maltese passed away beginning of January and my family and I were looking for a new puppy. We needed a small pure bred dog because of my brother's asthma and allergies. Because of Covid, dog prices had gone up to $3000+ and there was no way we were spending that much. While looking at shelters, we stumbled across Ruff House and saw an adorable schnauzer mix that my family and I fell in love with. We submitted an application and then 2 weeks later heard nothing, so we submitted another application for 2 other schnauzers we loved. Our application got accepted and we started the process. We did the phone interview and the volunteer who handled our application during the phone interview literally said and I quote "Oh how do you know [insert dog's foster moms name]? You have to know someone to get your application approved." We thought it was strange that she said that since people on facebook were commenting and asking if they had to know someone in order to get their application looked at. We had to go to our summer house to check on it and while coming back, I look on facebook and see that while we were gone, they gave the dog we were looking at to another family. We were heartbroken but still had another dog we were interested in. We set up an appointment with another person for the yard visit and that was probably the easiest part. After that, our volunteer who was handling the applicaton set us up with a 3 way text with the dog's foster mom that we were interested in. We then get a text saying that someone is already looking at the dog we want and our volunteer didn't even bother to coordinate with the other volunteers to see if the dog we wanted was being looked at. Our volunteer then told us that they were getting new dogs Friday and we should wait then. Friday night, our volunteer starts sending all these pictures and asking if we want them and not even giving us all the information on the dogs. Turns out the dogs were going to be huge! We were to then look at the dogs at the event on Saturday. Unfortunately, my dog that I already have got hurt and we had to cancel, then causing us to miss out on all the dogs we were to look at. We are trying to communicate with our volunteer and ask her if she can find out what dogs were coming in on the upcoming friday and she said she would get back to us. Everytime we asked her something, she said she would get back to us and never did. Every dog we looked at had someone looking at them. The one dog we were looking at was adorable and she was perfect. But once again, someone was looking at the dog. We then get a text saying the person backed out on the dog. We had an appointment at the event on Saturday to look at dogs. Our volunteer told us she wrote down small-medium low shedding dogs (terriers) to put on the truck for us to look at. We make an arrangement with the foster mom of the dog that someone backed out on to meet us at the event before our appointment. We arrive at the event and look at the dog and my family and I were mortified. This poor dog had all these problems and clearly needed to be rehabilitated and to stay in foster care till she got better. This rescue was so focused on getting this dog adopted that they didn't even care that she needed time to get better and have all her health issues fixed. We are waiting for the truck in our car and it was half an hour late. We had a number and were very excited to look at the terriers our volunteer wrote down for us to be put on the truck. My family are standing there in the hot sun waiting for them to unload their stuff. The woman driving the truck was a complete disaster. She was screaming and yelling at people on what to do and what not to do and gave everyone an attitude. The people before us were being helped and we should have been next. The volunteers completely skipped over us and went to the next number. Then this little girl, who must be a volunteers kid asked us if we were being helped and then got yelled at not to help us. Once it was finally our turn, we told them what specific dog's name we were looking for and that we were looking for the terriers. They weren't on the truck. My family drove 45 minutes all the way to the event and the dogs we were promised weren't even on the truck. So we left and are now trying to find a dog. All everyone talks about is to adopt and give rescue animals a home. Ruff House Rescue has completely ruined this for my family and I and we now have to spend over $3,000 for a dog. They are completely disorangized. The volunteers don't communicate with each other. The volunteer who handled our application was the worst. She would say she would get back to us and then never would. She did nothing to try and find a dog for us or try to get one reserved. Also, there were dogs that wouldn't be on their website or facebook but would be on petfinder. I would go to any other rescue than this one. Hate this place!! read more

We went home with our first Ruff House Rescue pup (Carissa who is now named Whiskey) tonight and couldn't be happier. Jackie was in contact with us and made the whole process simple. I am absolutely blown away by the respect that Jackie, Ally (Carissa's foster) and Cat (who performed the home check) gave us every step of the way. I truly got the feeling that their dogs are their top priority. It can be stressful adding a new dog to the family, but it is well worth it and I would absolutely recommend Rough House Rescue to any of my friends or family. We adopted our Chiweenie "Chewy" from RHR. They are a wonderful organization that lives and cares for animals in need. I was impressed that they are 100% volunteer rescue. Many of their foster parents take great care to ensure the animals are healthy and ready for adoption. I would highly recommend RHR and their team of foster parents to everyone. read more

Last weekend we adopted a beautiful lab named Rozz now called Lexie. The people at This rescue really know the dogs and care about them. They do background checks and need to see your home and fenced in yard to be sure it is suitable for a rescue dog. Jen was so helpful and spent time telling me about the dogs I wanted to meet. We brought our other dog to the meet and greet and we went home with the perfect dog for our family. She fits in perfectly with our family and we couldn't be happier. I do not even know how to begin this review. I feel like I've told our story over, repeatedly, but probobly because it's perfect!!! I rescued my Riley James when he was 8 weeks old. It was one of the most amazing things I have ever done. He was my shadow and my heart and soul. I met my boyfriend Brian and RJ and him became best buds. We welcomed Shyla Mae, our English Mastiff in 2009 (rescued). They were besties. In May of this year, we had to say goodbye to RJ. Our world fell apart and our hearts were broken. After a few months, we realized that Shyla needed a companion and friend. She was doing well but she was sad. We decided to rescue a friend for her. We went out to lunch in Freeport, to discuss how we were going to do this, while walking the nautical mile, we saw a women walking the most precious puppy. We stopped to say hello and immediatly fell in love. We always believed that when the timing was right, Riley James would lead us to our next furever friend. Brian and I knew that we had to have him. We Emailed Ruff House and after a very extensive background check, we opened our hearts and home to Kane Riley, yes our dogs have middle names...lol. Ruff house was truly amazing. Everyone from the owners of the organization to the volunteers. Kane came into our lives and made us smile and laugh again. They met the needs of our senior dog Shyla, while trusting us to provide the love that Kane needed. This organization changed our lives. They brought joy back into all our lives. Shyla is playing, walking and loving all of it. Kane loves his new big sister and is comfortable enough to show his personality, which is adorable. If you are looking to change your life, open your heart and home and realize what rescued really means. I highly suggest this organization. We will forever love RUFF HOUSE RESCUE! read more

I recently adopted a kitten through Ruff House and it was a great experience! Everyone was nice and the process went very smoothly. Yes, the adoption events are hectic. Yes, it's loud. But I was thrilled to see so many people interested in adopting dogs and cats instead of shopping. And it's handy to have the events in Petco - it allowed me to go pick up everything I needed for my cat, and the cat herself, all in one location. If we ever adopt a third pet, they will absolutely come from Ruff House! Thanks again for everything! read more

Four years ago, we adopted the most beautiful puppy ever from Ruff House. I can't thank Diane and Melissa enough for believing in us through the adoption process. Although they didn't make it easy, I appreciate the steps that they took to ensure that she would be the right fit for us and that we would care and love her unconditionally. I highly recommend Ruff House Rescue!!! We recently lost our sweet dog, Sammie, after 13 years of pure love from her. After a few weeks, we felt ready to welcome a new dog into our family. I had been following Ruff House for about a year, and liked their policies. They have protocols in place to make sure you are going to give a pet a safe, loving and secure home. They are not handing these pets out to just anyone. They love and are looking out for the best interest of these mistreated and abandoned animals. Applications are reviewed, vet references are checked, homes are visited, pre-made ID tags are required, quality collar and leash must be purchased through them, and yes, you will spend time going through the final paperwork with a volunteer upon final adoption. All of your questions will be answered. The Ruff House team is made up of volunteers who give their time and energy rescuing these animals from horrific conditions, transporting them to the Ruff House facility, fostering them until adoption, walking those in the kennel, taking them for vet appointments, reviewing applications, helping to find pets that meet adopters' preferences, planning much needed fundraisers, running the adoption events each weekend, and even assisting in the birth of litters from the many pregnant animals that have been saved. They are giving the best care to your future pet. I thank everyone involved in the rescue and care of our new little girl, Otter (AKA "May"), especially Paige Bravin who helped us find her and drove her to her vet appts, and Amanda Guido, who took in our scared, skinny pregnant dog, helped deliver her 11 puppies, and cared for all of them until adoption. read more

We just adopted our adorable terrier mix from Ruff House Rescue. Arlo is a wonderful addition to our family and we are so grateful to the generous and caring staff at Ruff House for saving him from a high kill shelter in Texas. Ruff House does such good work! They save thousands of animals from terrible living conditions and, in many cases such as with ours, from certain death. While sometimes the adoption events and interactions may appear to be slightly disorganized, it is because the organization is run entirely by volunteers and they are super busy. You just need to be patient. If you are looking to adopt, you should fill out an online application and follow their Facebook posts and pictures on Petfinder to find a dog that interests you. Then simply tell them. They will follow-up with you and get you through their process. We found the staff to be very thorough and caring. They are extremely careful to find good homes for the dogs--in our case, arranging a site visit to be sure a puppy would be safe in our yard and home. They arranged a "meet and greet" for our family in our home and dropped the dog off to us. As part of their mission, they arrange for the dog to be spayed or neutered at the ASPCA before any adoption becomes final. We "fostered to adopt" but quickly fell in love with our little guy and knew we had to keep him. While the RHR fee may be higher than some local town or city shelters, it covered a collar, tag, microchipping, initial supply of food, all shots and neutering. Arlo's first foster "mom" also provided a couple of toys and loaned us a carry bag to take him for his neuter appointment. Keep in mind the fee also has to offset their transportation and additional costs to care for the animals, many of whom come from other states. We had a great experience with Ruff House and love our little guy who brings us joy every day. read more

I recently purchased and rescued a lovely Puppy and he fell in love with him immediately. I was to have a yard visit and attempted many times to set it up with Cheryl. After having a dog for two weeks Cheryl was available to do a yard visit. She came to my house on a Friday night. First she tried my front door to see if it worked properly and said it didn't help with many rough attempts she realize that it does work. She then proceeded to the backyard and looked around the perimeter taking photos. She found a fence that had a large space in it which we realized the next day she caused. She then said that she needed to come into the house and look at the living environment, I explained that during these Covid times she should not enter the home she stated she had to. She had a mask on, but never washed her hands. She looked at my living room and my kitchen and said it was OK she then looked at my puppies crate said it was too small which it wasn't said that my Parina pro health food was not good and the toys I chose for the puppy we're not what she had recommended. She stated I don't think you were at my safety course, I told her I was with my son and she said I don't think you were I don't recognize you. I had a mask on And sunglasses and she does many courses on the rescue days, how would she recognize me? She told me my house was unacceptable like I had a dog chained to a chain-link fence. She kept saying I'm not leaving until you explain why you did not pay attention to my safety course. The dog was happy and well taken care of and had a good home. On my front sidewalk as I held the puppy, she bullied me and was very belligerent. I got very nervous as she said I am not leaving until I get the right answers from you. I should have made her leave but she said I was not getting the dog. Cheryl the Volunteer at Ruffhouse, left with my dog. I should have checked her credentials and I have heard terrible stories about her behavior since then. It is unfortunate as these dogs need homes but she is not doing Ruffhouse any favors and I would not recommend read more

The folks at Ruff House Rescue are thorough, professional and show great care and concern over their animals. They helped answer any and all questions my family had-and there were many due to being first time dog owners. I highly recommend RHR to folks looking for a great organization. read more

I had a great adoption experience with Ruff House!! I can't believe how well this organization is run, especially considering it's all volunteer!!! The application process involved many stages to ensure their dogs go to good homes which was so great to see! They truly make sure they place their animals with the best families. They take such great care of their animals and I'm so happy they were able to give me my furever friend!!! read more

I had fostered a dog name bubbles for 4 weeks and we decided to adopt her Pat called us on a Friday and wantef 600.00 for her. My wife and i told her we didn't have the all of the money right now only have some. I am a NYC Firefighter and out sick l should have it moday. Pat then threatened to come Saturday to take the dog. I told her why would you do that if we going to adopt. She then said Diane (who has a record) Will be in touch. Never got a call from her to make arrangements, but i got a call from Pat to bring the dog to get neutered on Tuesday at the veterinarian in Hewlett. My took a video of me walking bubbles in. They told us to come back tomorrow and we did.we waited for 2 hours and the veterinarian told us that Ruff house took her. We proceeded to Island Park to find out why When we got we spoke to some volunteers and the Pat came out with a big dog trying to chase us away She called the police on us, we did nothing wrong my son is 16 my daughter 12 The officer herad my story and couldn't believe what has happend He spoke with Diane on the phone and she told him that we couldn't adopt the bubbles because the police were called The bottom line is we had bubbles for weeks my family became extremely attached Because we didn't come up with money on Saturday but we got it on Monday they secretly took the dog and got it adopted right away This has devastated my family, my children are emotionally wrecked its not right what the did to my family especially at this time that we living in read more

Ruff House Rescue is a New York based rescue however we rescue cats and dogs in need from many US states and beyond. We host adoptions every weekend except for Christmas. Pre-Script: Search HEAR Long Island on Reddit. I wish had…read more Original Post: I'm a person living with a disability, seeking a non-service companion to join my family with my aging service dog. HEAR was aware of this via my detailed application and references. I reached out to HEAR via PetFinder very interested in a pup, Relish, who appeared to be a good match with my family. I entered the adoption process, got all of my references confirmed, completed a virtual home visit, set a meet time, and was sent additional pics and videos of Relish after the visit--all validating Relish as a potential match. It was a very hopeful and exciting moment. However, in the same text I was informed I was approved for adoption from HEAR, I was also informed Relish was just adopted, within 18 hours of my confirmed meetup. Prior to this, I was not informed I was competing for the match. Had I advance notice, I might've made other arrangements, but I wasn't offered the opportunity or the warning. I've volunteered for and dealt with more than a dozen rescue agencies in my region as an advocate and supporter, as well as several others throughout my childhood. None of the agencies I've worked with have been less transparent than HEAR. No one wants to be in the position of visualizing a potential family member in their lives, and planning for that hopeful first meeting, only to have them cancelled from the equation less than 18 hours before the meet--removed with no notice of other variables.Instead, they sent pics of other dogs. I've requested my adoption application with HEAR be closed, as I would never recommend anyone who wishes to ethically enter a relationship with a rescue rely on HEAR for the availability of the hopeful companion, or transparency in general. Reply to HEAR's response to this post: HEAR says there were delays. HEAR says I'd rather garden?? These are absolute falsehoods. The timeline below is clear. All communications and appointments were honored. May 11, Kristie confirmed my May 10 application and requested documentation of my landlord's permission to have a second dog. May 12, I submitted that documentation. May 14, Kristie apologizes for *her* delay, and informs me she'll be reaching out to my three references. All references responded the same day, after I let them know to check their "unknown numbers" folder. Friday, May 15, at 7:28pm, a virtual home visit is requested by Kristie. I was already on my farmstead for the weekend--I detailed the farmstead in my application. I let Kristie know I was upstate, and offered to FaceTime from there or when I got back home. She said she'd wait. I proposed a meet time, but Kristie said it could happen whenever, to just text her when I'm home, that she'd be "around." I texted Monday, May 18 to make arrangements. We set it for the next day, May 19. The virtual visit happened with her partner, Sam, because Kristie was unavailable when I texted. During that meeting, an appointment was made to specifically meet Relish on May 23 at the HEAR event. Prior to the arranged meet date, I inquired of its flexibility because planting became a factor--planting is absolutely critical and 100% dependent on weather and climate. Sam responded that probably wouldn't work. So, I CONFIRMED the original meet time. I very clearly confirmed my motivation and intent to meet and spend time with this specific sweet boy, Relish. Still, he was adopted out from under me. NOT ONCE was I informed there were other applicants for him. Not once were any other factors or obstacles to adopting Relish mentioned. And not once did I miss any appointments or communications. I've dealt with much more honest and ethical agencies. It's HEAR's opaque practices that might hurt their ability to adopt, not this honest review. Post-Script: Sam even mentioned she didn't want to leave Relish alone at night with her dogs, because "god forbid something happen." Apparently, that was a legitimate risk as per Reddit. It's absolutely shocking that injury to fosters is still a risk they take.

This review does not reflect the dogs what-so-ever, so please come visit this shelter to adopt and give these dogs a forever home/family. The sheer number of dogs that this facility has is massive and they have so many dogs to choose from big and small / young and old. We met a few dogs that we absolutely loved, but at the end of the day we ended up adopting another dog in need from another shelter because we felt the staff was a little difficult to deal with. When meeting the dogs, the staff seemed to hinder on the negatives of each dog instead of seeing how happy we were during the meet and greets. I understand they like to warn potential adopters of all possible negatives, but we felt like these employees weren't even "dog-people". Additionally, we noticed after visiting twice that many of these dogs have MULTIPLE pending applications but they don't seem to be in a rush to get them into a home. We understand that it's about finding the best home for each pet, but it's a little discouraging applying for a dog that already has 3 pending applications. Hard to believe not one of these families are qualified. I hope the facility can approve upon these things and give these dogs into the homes they deserve.

While the pup was not the dog we were looking for, the staff at the shelter made the experience a positive one, under the most distressing circumstances. Here's what's good about the shelter: 1. When most shelters don't pick up the phone or require you to leave a message and call you back, sometimes hours later, not only did BAS pick up the phone to talk to the lost pup's (Rosie, the Mini Goldendoodle) mom, but they looked at her Instagram fotos to see if the found pup might be a match. The BAS staff talked a lot among themselves to share thoughts and ultimately suggested that Rosie's mom come in to see the found pup. 2. When we arrived at BAS, the staff could not have been nicer. They handled our team of 3 women's emotions with great empathy, knowing that we were either going to experience a miracle or another distressing loss, if the found pup wasn't a match. 3. While the found pup was not a match for our missing Rosie, the staff gave us ample time to really be certain. They were kind and patient. 4. As you can imagine, we've been to a number of shelters in search of Rosie. What was remarkable about BAS was the following: -While many shelters wreak of urine or "animal scent" - we noted immediately, that bad odors were not present. The place is clean and organized. - We also noticed that the room that we went into with about 10 dogs, was quiet. There are no dogs incessantly barking or crying and whining. The volume of noise is so loud at some shelters that you can't even have a conversation - because especially the dogs are barking non-stop. It was actually quite stunning. The dogs seemed content and not agitated. - Each pup had their own clean bedding and did not have to sleep or lay down on a hard metal floor. The pup we saw even had a dog bed in her crate. It's a lot of work to keep that bedding clean, as you can imagine. 5. When we left, we could see the team anxiously awaiting our decision about a match. And while it was not, the young woman who took us back to the kennels was optimistic and shared her hopes that Rosie would be found. It was uplifting to hear, given we were all on the verge of tears having been disappointed again. I just had to leave a review given the positive vibe BAS has all around, from the observable care of the animals, the cleanliness of the facility and the well trained and good mannered staff - they made a tough situation a lot less hard. Thank you to the BAS staff!

I wound up getting an appointment here at Babylon Animal Hospital. During her first visit she got shots and a thorough examination. The very kind vet and vet tech were very patient, answering all of my questions and giving advice. We got her chipped, and they trimmed her nails free of charge. They handled her with care and she did not yelp or cry once, during shots, nail clipping, or having the chip put in. Right now our pup is there getting spayed. She has to stay the night, which is so tough for us.. the office told me when I could call to check in, and when i did, they gushed about how sweet she is and how much they were enjoying her. We cannot wait to pick her up tomorrow but they've made me feel comfortable that she's in good hands!

There's always tons of items to look through, and most things are only between 99¢-$4.99!! The prices are unbeatable and there's always great treasure to be found. It's family owned and operated and they have huge sales all the time, including 50% off storewide sales!! New media goes out every Thursday and most of it is only 49¢-99¢!! They have tons of books, CDs, Vinyl records, collectibles, vintage items, literally everything!! They accept donations at 2 bags per person per day, and it's all used very well! They have a lot of waste initiatives put into place and work with lots of non profit organizations locally! Everything is priced super cheap to move product fast and make space to put out new items!! This way, customers are able to get great finds for super cheap and they can prevent anything from having to go into a dumpster, unlike most other thrift stores that throw lots of stuff out! Even broken items are bagged up together in lots and sold for parts for 99¢ to prevent it from being thrown out!! The jukebox in the back is free to play and the walls are decorated beautifully! The need is immense in todays trying and expensive times. In addition to that they are helping to avoid clothing going into landfills. After volunteering here I will kindly recommend that you wash all clothing before donating. Volunteers will sort through to make sure only clothing with no rips/stains move on to be donated. All other clothing gets sent to a facility to be used in textile recycling or thrift store use which the organization receives money for so they can purchase much needed clothing items.

I tried on a BCBG coat from the "boutique" and it was priced at $24 which I thought was excellent as it was a long style coat. This location has a huge section of clothing and some small bins of shoes on top of the clothing racks. There's also a small home goods section in the back that was popular. The clothing is separated by size which I really love as it makes thrifting so much easier. There was definitely a larger selection of sizes small and medium here and not much of a plus size section. If you're looking to adopt a sick animal, go to Ruff House Rescue, where you will in fact be rescuing the animal from Ruff House! RHR appears to be more interested in collecting the high adoption fees than the actual well-being and health of their animals. Cha-ching! It appears Ruff House's course of action to issues and complaints is to simply ignore and not answer. They take no accountability or responsibility! What a shame for a rescue charity that will gladly collect adoption fees and monetary donations ... tsk! tsk! tsk! We adopted a puppy from Ruff House Rescue, and brought her home on a Sunday evening (Day 1). When we got her home, we noticed she had a persistent cough that seemed to get worse over time; also, her front legs were knuckling (bow-legged) and she had trouble walking. We brought her to the first vet 2 days later and the vet was upset at the puppy's condition, suggesting that she should never have been allowed to be adopted in her condition - she was diagnosed with a respiratory infection (kennel cough) and was sent home with antibiotics. We sent a message to the Emergency cell Phone Number provided in Ruff House's Pet Adoption Agreement to let them know of the pup's condition and what our vet said, but we never received a response from Ruff House. As her condition continued to get worse, we brought her to a different vet (2nd opinion) 4 days later (still no response from Ruff House), where she was again diagnosed with "kennel cough" and prescribed with more antibiotics. That same night (Day 4), she started to exhibit signs of extreme breathing distress and had difficulty walking, so she was taken for an emergency visit to VMCLI (no we don't recommend them!) where she was diagnosed with pneumonia. She remained under their care for 4 nights and did not appear to improve, so she was transferred to a different animal hospital on Day 8 (West Hills - yes we highly recommend them!), where she remained for specialized treatment of pneumonia for 4 more days (until Day 12). A lengthy email detailing these events were sent to Ruff House, however they did not immediately respond to the email; nor did they ever respond to the text message sent to their "Emergency Only" cell phone number. When Ruff House finally responded to the email (3 days after it was sent), they said that the "emergency number" reflected in the Adoption Agreement was "not working" and that the puppy should have been take to their vet. How can they provide an "emergency only" number that is "not working"?!? Since they never responded to initial message sent 2 days after the adoption, and only responded when the puppy was already in urgent care, restricted to an incubator for oxygen therapy at the 2nd animal hospital, RHR's suggestion came way too late ... conveniently! While Ruff House offered to refund the adoption fee of $500 (which we did not receive), we requested reimbursement for the puppy's extraordinary medical expenses and emergency vet visits, as it had become a financial burden (over $8,000+) due to Ruff House's negligence in not only ensuring healthy pups are adopted out, but in their failure to respond timely to our messages. As they (Ruff House) continued to ignore our messages, we reached out to an attorney who tried to negotiate an agreement for Ruff House to provide us with a reimbursement of $1,500 through Ruff House's attorney, a partner at Pryor Cashman LLP in NYC - they're not very good at responding either! (gee, I hope they at least respond to their clients ... ) To-date, we have not been able to collect the already agreed-upon reimbursement of $1,500, nor the $500 refund of adoption fee. Ruff House has demanded updated pictures of the pup, a health certificate, rabies vaccination certificate, spaying certificate - all of which were provided. Ruff House has continued to withhold reimbursement and has not responded to us, although we were told (by RHR's attorney from Pryor Cashman) that they would bring a check during another home visit, which of course they will not schedule. Why would they? It would mean they'd have to payout what was agreed to. We have followed up 3 more times (6 months after adoption) with the attorney/partner at Pryor Cashman LLP, but we still have not received a response, even after several follow-ups. As such, we filed a claim through BBB, which of course they ignored and did not respond to. (YES YOU CAN FILE A COMPLAINT or REVIEW on BBB, even though Ruff House is a not-for-profit organization). read more

If you want to adopt a dog to love and care for, DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME with RUFF HOUSE RESCUE. I lost my rescue dog, "Otto" in December of 2019. It is very difficult to lose a family member and I was hesitant to get another dog. After much reflection, I decided to open my home and heart, to another rescue dog. I am 55 years old and have had many dogs since I was a young girl. I own a home, with property, and have an electronic fence. I have the means to properly care for a dog, and I am an experienced dog owner. APPARENTLY, that doesn't seem to matter to this rescue agency. My application was denied because I "didn't have a fence". However, on the application, right after the, "Do you have a fence" question, is a follow up question to the effect "Are you willing to walk the dog on a leash" I ANSWERED HONESTLY - YES! THIS AGENCY IGNORED my answer. I can only assume this awful agency chose to ignore my answer, basically calling me a liar. Do they believe me to a liar simply because I have an invisible fence???? UNBELIEVABLE!! Here is what is true....the agency is willing to allow people that live in apartments - with no fence of ANY kind, to adopt but deny an APPLICANT like me? "if you don't have a fence, are you willing to walk the dog....." Since they chose to ignore or did not believe the sincerity of my answer, I was promptly dismissed THEY IGNORED MY ANSWER? The agency trusts apartment owners and believe they are better candidates because they DON'T have an invisible fence installed?? Obviously, apartment owners must leash walk their dog and the agency believes them, but my word isn't good enough for them. I am insulted and fine this outrageous. I asked that question to the volunteer who said my application was declined - of course, what could she say? The agency doesn't adopt out to people with invisible fences. She added some other BS about the agency does not want the dog exposed the electric fence. THE FENCE WILL NOT, AND, CAN NOT HARM A DOG THAT IS NOT WEARING THE INVISIBLE FENCE COLLAR ON!!!!! I AM BEWILDERED, INSULTED AND VERY UPSET. IS NOT THE MISSION OF THIS "RESCUE" AGENCY FIND HOMES FOR THESE DOGS???? Who is responsible for determining if an applicant has a "good home"??? So, they will allow a dog to remain at the rescue - possible in a cage, because I was honest and mentioned an invisible fence. I cannot believe they would deny a dog a home on what seems to be an arbitrary determination. I was heartbroken and frankly, angry at being treated this way! But I am more concerned about dogs at the agency!! I cannot believe they would turn down my application and deny a dog a chance for a loving home. I am offering to care and love a dog - to make it part of a family. They make the price of adoption prohibitively expensive - in many cases. In addition, they dash the hopes of a deserving applicant. AND FOR WHAT?? THIS WAS THE WORST EXPERIENCE! They should be ashamed of themselves. I would NOT recommend this rescue to anyone. I would hate for more applicants to have their hopes dashed as well. read more

When the time came to add to our family, rescue adoption was the only course that we would follow. A little blonde Lab with beautiful eyes popped on the 'puter screen. After a couple of days of returning to that picture, we logged on to the ruffhouserescue.com site and filled out the application. We have adopted from rescues on three other occasions, so we expected the questions that came up. Some will say it's too lengthy and intrusive, BUT IT's NOT! Many of these animals have been through hell and back, and the rescue agencies should and do see it as their responsibility to place these animals where they will thrive. We chatted on-line with Amy, who was very helpful and provided good information. We drove over an hour to an adoption event that they were having at a Petsmart in New Hyde Park. When we got there, Melissa, Lori, and Diane helped make sure that Butternut was going to the right home. Try to remember that rescue agencies aren't there to help people as much as they are helping provide a rescued animal with as ideal a forever home as possible. It's all about the adoptees! Butternut is home with us now and fits into our family so perfectly, you can't imagine. To Amy, Lori, Melissa, and Diane... THANK YOU!!!!! 5 stars aren't enough to convey how happy we are with the process and the outcome! --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- If you look at the reviews, you'll find a 3 to 1 ratio for 5 star ratings to 1 star. There's no in-between. You know why? Because that's essentially the same ratio as approved applications to non-approved. To the many families that did not get their app approved, I'm sorry, but it's the adoptees that are protected, not the applicants. Different dogs have different needs. Oh you have small children in your home and you want this dog that has a bit of a history? No. Oh you live in an apartment and want this dog that's kind of high energy and needs a fenced-in yard? No. Oh you have an older dog that after seeing the interaction between them makes us truly uncomfortable? No. I do not work for RHR. My wife and I recently adopted a loving Lab/Vizsla mix from them and quite honestly, I feel a need to defend them against some of the reviews that have been posted. Adoption events are chaotic, by their very design. If you expect to go to one and be treated like a potential customer entering a Lexus showroom, your expectations are WAY off base. Again; it's all about the dogs. These people drive into the deep south and bring back dogs that would otherwise be dead right now. Luckily; gas and vehicles are free, as is canine health care and dog food. Why are the fees higher than a public agency that gets funding? See if you can guess. Adopt, don't shop. Ruff House did right by our loving little dog, and I appreciate their diligence in making sure that our home was fit for her. read more

I was so put off with their process and lack of communication. A new Petsmart open in my town so I went and I saw a kitten that I fell in love with. The Petsmart staff was helpful and told me what to do and what they require, I even wanted to help volunteer. I put the applications in and went to the adoption event that Saturday(I took an hour break not knowing it was gonna be complete chaos..) I arrived an hour after the event began, that's when they all got there. Then they brought all the animals in and I introduced myself and kind of just waited. No one paid attention to me, except the Manager at Petsmart. After an hour of watching people who just came for the kittens they brought to the store, sign applications and such..I was still just standing there. It was a mess and I told them I have to go. So I emailed after 2 days and I was told(by Melissa) someone was going to look at my application and call me (Jacky was supposed to call) to talk about it. I wanted to take the kitten home AND help volunteer because they said they needed someone, you'd think they'd need that. The next day I asked when she would call and apologized for being annoying. (I felt excited and really wanted to adopt her) I get a call after the email and to my knowledge it went great. She told me she was going to see if I needed to set up a meet with my cat or just pick her up. Called my references and everything. I got excited, got a name tag, cat carrier, etc. I backed off for four days, then emailed again asking when I was going to get a call or if I can pay now to speed it up. Now, I get an email that there's a concern that my cat goes outside and the kitten needs to stay indoors. Well, ANYONE, could have voiced that concern to me prior when I mentioned it. When I was on the phone I even said, my cat only goes out if I'm by the door and I would transition her to staying in because she's barely ever out and since the call, I had. Then no response again. So I emailed the next day fed up asking for a straight answer, either yes I can adopt her or no let me move on at this point. I was going to the store every day just to make sure she was still there. A day later I receive a response that they're swamped with Saturday adoptions- in my head I'm going wtf?- and that she'll get back to me, I responded with a thank you and Melissa asked that I reach out to her tomorrow evening because she didn't want to miss me.. So it's Saturday again now, I went to Port Washington and adopted a kitten that day and he's awesome.Sunday, I got an email asking if I can send a video of my apt and finalize the adoption.. I would have had anyone acted like they wanted me to adopt her, and had communicated better. I understand it's hard and they get busy. So does everywhere else. If you are thinking of getting a "pet" that you know will be a family member for life, Ruff House Rescue is where to go! Not only did I adopt Hope Grace, a year later I went back and adopted my sweet little Angel. I can't imagine life without these two sweet girls. They bring a ton of joy to my life! I would have thought adopting a dog from a rescue would be like buying a pet. I was so touched to find that there is so much more to it than that. Ruff House Rescue is not a store looking to turn a profit by selling a product. This lovely group of VOLUNTEERS move mountains to find and save as many pets as they can. They work tirelessly to house, feed, keep clean and safe as many neglected and discarded defenseless animals as they can hold, and then nurture and love them on a daily basis so that they can learn to live in a home without fear of humans even though most of them have already had bad experiences. Both times I worked with Ruff House Rescue, even though they knew I was a "done deal" and would be taking a pet off their hands and freeing a space for another, Diane & Melissa went to all lengths to make sure Hope & Angel were going to a good home. They went out of their way too to make sure both of my girls were up to date with their health needs and that they were ready to be adopted. Throughout the process both times, I needed to visit the shelter frequently. Every visit, I was especially impressed with how well Diane, Melissa, and the volunteer staff knew each animal in their care. They knew each one's name, background, health status, temperament and even their personalities! I was amazed at how this group of people with so much work on their hands take the time to love each one. If I had gone to a pet store and bought my puppies, or even had gone to a large shelter or the Humane society, I would have paid my fees and that would be the end of it. Over the past year, even before I considered another, I frequently hear from Diane and Melissa. A note on Face Book, a text, a call every now and then, "How's Hope?" A year later, they ask after Angel too. These folks still concern themselves to check on a dog they only knew briefly just because they love her. read more

I've adopted 2 dogs from here in the last year and couldn't be happier! There is a process to foster or adopt, and while it might seem "extreme" it is nice to know they aren't just handing dogs out to any applicant. A lot of these dogs are in shelters because someone else wasn't fit to care for them. Pets are a big responsibility that the adopter should be ready to take on. While at the second adoption event I heard one person talk about their allergies to most dogs and another mention how they'd be fine as long as the puppy didn't wake them up at 4am. It's easy to be frustrated but you can see why they take the time to screen their applicants. The adoptions all take place on the weekends, as this shelter is all volunteer based, so patience is needed. Over the years I've adopted dogs from three different shelters (mainly a result of just convenience) and each one has it's own 'pain points.' Adoption fee's vary by age and size but all dogs are fixed, microchipped and up to date on their vaccines. Any shelter will have a fee (which are similar to Ruff House with the exception of some shelter that receive large donations), so be prepared to spend a few hundred on an adoption. Don't let the process or people be what matters most. It's about finding a home for these animals. The dogs are all well cared for and the fosters are all caring people. The woman who fostered our dog still reaches out to see how she is doing. Overall, I'd adopt from them again if the time came and would recommend to anyone I know that this is a great place to find a dog. It's also nice that people can foster to adopt, allowing you to see how the dog will settle into your home or mesh with your family. I'd recommend not picking out a dog ahead of time and setting your heart on them (this applies to any shelter). There's a good chance that isn't the dog you'll be leaving with, but there are so many other deserving dogs to meet. read more

We are so grateful to Ruff House for matching us with the perfect pup! Not gonna lie: trying to adopt during the pandemic can be frustrating, and it can take a while. We had an application in for a couple of months before we adopted. But patience pays off -- once we connected with our adoption counsellor everything moved very quickly! The all-volunteer staff is very caring and they have an excellent, safe, and thorough process, with phone interviews, a virtual home visit, and a socially distanced meet up. Our adoption volunteer, Karen, asked about our previous pet experience and our lifestyle, and together we came up with a short list of possible dogs to adopt. We met Griffen (now Finn) at his foster home on Long Island, fell in love immediately, and brought him home two weeks later. On adoption day, Ruff House volunteers answered all our questions, gave a short safety talk with lots of tips for good dog care, and fitted Finn with a collar and leash. Ruff House works super hard for these dogs, and especially during the pandemic their volunteers are going through huge numbers of applications and transporting so many animals. There are bound to be rough edges in the process, but if you are looking to adopt a dog, fill out an application at Ruff House. Stay open minded and open hearted, talk with the volunteers, listen to their advice, and be patient. This is a lifetime commitment; don't try to rush it. I had an awful experience with this organization. My family and choose a beautiful schnauzer whom we fell in love with immediately. We got to spend two weeks with this beautiful dog. My mom bathed him, walked him regularly and he was as happy as ever. However, whenever we had to have the house check we encountered a horrible woman named CHERYL REDASH who was nasty, rude, and very mouthy with my mom who had just come home after a long day working in the hospital. She was incredibly nasty and rude after yelling at my mom for about an hour. Nothing was good enough for her as she even complained that the front door was not good enough for our dog. This was the most ridiculous and absurd thing we ever heard. She preceded to check our backyard which has all new fencing and a gate and claimed it was also not safe for our new puppy. This was traumatizing as we had just recently lost our dachshund who we loved very dearly and this was the last thing we needed. She took our new puppy without even offering a refund until we contacted about 5 different people who eventually answered. This was one of the worst experiences my family and I have ever had in our lives and we wear extremely heartbroken to have our new beautiful schnauzer taken from us by this horrible woman who some how still has a job. We have also recently found out that we are not the only ones to have had this sort of encounter with this woman and that she has a history. read more

Ruff House Rescue helped my husband and I find the dog who has become part of our family. Not only were they a pleasure to work with, but they truly take great care of the pets involved in this adoption service. I heard about Ruff House from a family member who also had a positive experience. I then followed Ruff House on Instagram and was able to stay updated on pets who needed to be fostered and/or adopted. That's how I came upon my "fur baby." They made it easy to access the application for adoption and then took the time to ensure the dog was going to a secure and loving home environment. I was impressed with how thorough the process was-from speaking to references and phone interviews to a home inspection to ensure the dog's safety, it was obvious how much they care about each and every pet who is in the process of being adopted. I also admire Ruff House because many of the pets are fostered and taken care of instead of waiting in a kennel for a "furever" home. Toni, my dog's foster mom, was such a pleasure to work with and made us feel comfortable and safe as we learned about our future dog and spent time with him before taking him home for the first time. I just wanted to take a moment to say thank you. Thank you so much for making your adoption process the most difficult near impossible thing based on insane criteria, because now I rescued a beautiful puppy from a kill shelter. And a big thank you from him as well because now instead of being starved and alone sleeping in a cold concrete kennel he sleeps in a big cozy bed with my fiancé and I, has hearty healthy meals, tremendous amounts of safe exercise, a veterinarian that loves him and keeps him healthy,and a loving family that will give him the proper treatment he deserves. So from the both of us thank you. And he said he loves his backyard that your rescue claimed the "fence wasn't efficient enough" he plays non stop without any issue. God bless those poor dogs that sit in your shelter because you scrutinize every applicant to a ridiculous extent ( ie:being too young) (I'm 28 and my fiancé's 32) my heart weeps for them. I'm sure so many loving adoptees are passed up on and these poor animals you guys "rescue" are held captive. I recommend everyone steers clear of your rescue and goes straight to north shore animal rescue a place that actually seems to care less about an applicants age and a fence in a backyard and more about an animals well being. I am so grateful to Ruff House Rescue for all of the amazing work that they do. We adopted our dog over a year ago. Every person that we met was so loving and helpful. We first met Cheryl at an adoption event. She explained the adoption process and even explained how to set up a meet and greet with our current dog. My family and I inquired about a shy dog named Brownie ( now Barney). We got in contact with his foster mom, Jodie. Jodie was incredible. Her priority was Barney and making sure he was with the perfect family that could meet his needs. We fell in love with him immediately. Jodie stayed in constant contact with me (and still does!) to make sure Barney was adjusting to his new environment. She is a true loving foster mom to the dogs. The actual adoption was seamless. Melissa and Diane were so helpful ( and busy)....from finding parking for people to filling out paperwork to confirming immunizations with the vet, checking proper fit of collars and leashes and running the adoptions. They are truly advocates and life savers for many many dogs! I will forever be grateful to them for bringing Barney into our lives. He is the sweetest most loving little boy and such an asset to our family. read more

We adopted our sweet morkie from Ruff House Rescue in September of 2017. We weren't planning on adopting because we already had our sweet cockapoo. However, my sister couldn't keep her three dogs because of where she lived so she found new homes for two of her dogs and we were taking her third one. Sadly, about two weeks before he was going to be coming to us from her home in Pennsylvania, he passed away. My family was devastated, especially my 11 year old daughter. So we started looking online at many different sites. We looked at Ruff House Rescue's site and found Lilli. Lilli was exactly what we were looking for. She was about 6 years old and fully trained. I immediately emailed them and completed the application. Diane and Melissa were amazing. Since this was our first interaction with Ruff House they had vital conversations with us to make sure we were the right fit for Lilli. Lilli has brought us so much joy. She has brought Molly, our 13 year old cockapoo back to life. They have gotten along great since their first meeting and are the best sisters. Big props to Ruff House and all they do!! My family and I adopted our first rescue from Ruff house and everything went very smooth. They were super nice and answered all of our questions. We have a 18 month old and they were very helpful in giving us tips how to acclimate the two. They encouraged us to stay In touch as well. The whole process took maybe three weeks ( from application to adoption) as they primarily work on weekends, but we were able to speak with them during the week. You can see the dogs are cared for well and they only want to make sure they are continued to be cared for when adopted. Two volunteers came to do a home visit and they bought some of their foster dogs which was awesome. We received our dogs medical records and were given any information they had about his history. As a dog lover, I appreciate the hard work they do. My only suggestion would be to somehow streamline adoption day. They were very busy so we stood around for a bit but we were willing to do anything to adopt our little love!!! Thank you Melissa, Jodi, and Kathleen!!!! read more

We adopted our forever friend in August and he is an AMAZING fit for our family! The time and effort these volunteers put in to ensure a safe and loving home for these pets is immeasurable and should be greatly commended!! We really appreciate all you guys do!!! Reading some of the negative reviews, I can see where some people would get overwhelmed and frustrated. The event was slightly unorganized and even a bit chaotic at times and the yes the adoption process was a lot,( waiting on e-mails back, home visits..etc) BUT while going through these steps it should be REMEMBERED that these people are volunteering their time and their efforts and good intentions should not go unnoticed!!!! If someone doesn't get back to you right way it doesn't mean they are terrible at what they do. In todays society its all about instant gratification, and if you don't get what you want when you want it..... everyone else sucks! Well, some things are worth the work, effort, and the wait. I've never written a review like this in my entire life nor have I met such amazing people in my entire life. Diane and Melissa the two of you run this amazing rescue for these amazing animals to in sure that you're safe and that their loved and they all find a home. We lost our beloved black lab I love to go today our worlds were completely destroyed he was with us forever, we have two young sons for two weeks they moped around about not having their dog and my very good friend Rob told me all about Ruff House. He told me that there is a beautiful dog name Nala that when we were ready we take a look at her. The last thing on our minds was to adopt another dog that because I know him for so many years curiosity got the best of me. I fell in love with her she had a rough start she needed help and she needed a home we decided to foster her and within 48 hours we knew that she would be ours. Rescue is NOT organized at all. Stacks dog crates 3 crates high which is illegal and a safety hazard. Shoves big dogs into tiny crates and leaves them with dirty water. Fly's are everywhere carrying deadly diseases. Owner Diane, can't handle a big dog for her life. Only deals with small dogs and "adopts" them out for thousands of dollars just like a puppy store. Melissa is a cruel person. Brought a dog into foster and she needed to get her shots. The dog was scared and Melissa was dragging her by the neck across the deck with the dog peeing all over herself. Smh.....not a proper rescue. Gives vaccines to dogs on their own. Self medicates dogs with pills which is illegal. Volunteer Karen is a rude and disrespectful person. I do know the owner of the humane society of NY and will be reporting all illegal and cruel activity. I also will be notifying the Sargent of Freeport police so let it be know this rescue will be investigated. read more

Highly recommended!! I adopted both my puppies from here. Jessie back in March, and Dallas the end of April. They were so helpful and patient. Especially the second time around when I wanted to get Jessie a companion they helped me find the perfect one! (Dallas). If you print out the paper work before hand and let your references know they will be calling its really not that lengthy of a process. It makes me sad to see people bash the employees and volunteers. You need to keep in mind, when they take in dogs they are often neglected, abused, or left on the side of the road. They have seen the dogs at their worst, and only want the best. They take them in, care for them, love them and help them find a forever home. They want to make sure anyone who brings home a pup is bringing it home to a place where its going to be loved, and fed, and played with. If you cant adopt, at least foster, every dog deserves a second chance xo read more

We just adopted our first family dog from Ruff House Rescue. It was a great experience! The volunteers were professional and truly care about the animals. All of my emails were answered quickly and the staff was more than willing to work with us towards a successful adoption. We met Phoebe at a Petco event and had a lot of our questions and concerns addressed by the volunteers there. We then went on to PetSmart and met Melissa who was great with the dogs and great with our kids. I strongly recommend filling out an application prior to attending these events to speed the process up. What I appreciate most about RHR is their commitment to placing their dogs with the right people. They are very honest and upfront about where a specific dog will do the best. Super pleasant experience and I recommend checking them out. They really do get great dogs! I am now hooked in following what is going on via Facebook. :) read more

It is difficult to imagine that our young adult dog, Shannon (aka Charity), who was pregnant with 6 pups at the time, was rescued by Ruff House from a kill shelter. She has an extremely sweet and gentle personality and is wonderful with our young children. After we lost our 2 old dogs, we planned to adopt a puppy. Not only did we adopt an 11 week old puppy from Ruff House, but his mom, Shannon, as well! Melissa explained the whole adoption process and was thorough in making sure the animals being adopted were placed in a good home. She answered emails quickly and arranged for us to meet the pups. After visiting the facility, I could have walked out with at least 3 or 4 additional dogs! They had so many really nice dogs. I would highly recommend this rescue organization to anyone. Thank you Melissa, Diane, and of course Hara (foster mom) for our incredible pets that we love so much! read more

Unfortunately rough House rescue is not a rescue. The owner Diane Rose Indelicato is a known felon you can Google her name and find out on your own. She ships dogs from out of state and a U-Haul truck then sells them the very next day. These poor dogs have diseases they're not that checked they're not quarantined it's a very sad situation this owner of rough house rescue is under investigation. She is all about the money she flips dogs she does not care one bit about the dogs. Stay clear of this so called rescue!! And by the way her kennel was located in Island Park on Austin boulevard which was shut down she was ordered to vacate the premises by Nassau county Court for illegally operating a kennel and she was fined $6600. She does not have a kennel anymore and she keeps bringing dogs in from Texas has them living on a van until she adopts them out I suggest you do your research!! read more
