First and foremost, this is my first "Yelp" and that I am only doing so because I felt so compelled after my experience tonight. Our party of 3 decided to dine at Rum Fire tonight. My first impression was that I had been transported off of Kauai and back to a cheap and cheesy Las Vegas style restaurant/club circa 1995. The restaurant's decor is cookie cutter and tacky...highlighted by multi-colored mood accent lights. It lacked any ambiance or class and completely contradicted every bit of imagery you might have about Kauai. Despite its prime location right on the ocean, the restaurant is totally enclosed. At night, there is no view out the many windows because of the lighting and reflection off the glass. Our waiter informed us that the windows cannot be opened because of the "open kitchen" and the fact that bugs etc might enter. Thus, despite being only feet from the ocean, you would never know it from inside. The air conditioner blasts on high to compensate for the lack of fresh air which made the restaurant remarkably cold. We were seated at about 7:40pm. Our waiter was courteous and professional. However, he was sweating profusely (surprising considering we were all quite cold because of the blowing air conditioner) and seemed very hurried. Hungry, we placed our order quickly. Rather than providing bread to start your meal, Rum Fire gives its patrons a paper cone full of popcorn...like the kind you would expect at a cheap dive bar. Unsatisfied and very hungry, we ordered appetizers and our dinner entrees immediately. However, our appetizers did not arrive at the table until about 8:30pm. Our dinner arrived a full 40 minutes after we had finished our appetizers (9:16pm to be exact). Our waiter cautioned that our plates were hot. However, when I cut into my steak and took my first bite, it was nearly cold and the meat was tough. I am not one to complain, but at this point I would have sent my food back and walked out. However, we were all so hungry that we continued to eat our food. I also did not want to complain because I knew it wasn't the waiter's fault. I have been coming to Kauai almost annually since I was 8 years old and I am now in my mid thirties. I can say with confidence and experience that if you are visiting the island of Kauai you should not waist your time or money eating dinner at Rum Fire. read more

I took my family to Rumfire last night for an early Mother's Day dinner. Absolutely amazing! Best reservation system, with text reminders. We had the perfect ocean-side table, beautiful rainbow on one side, sun setting on the other side. The appetizers were amazing and perfect. The entrees were insanely delicious, prime rib and filet mignon cooked to beyond perfection. Couldn't have been a more perfect evening. Prices are very reasonable, food and atmosphere exceptional. Ryan is the best manager, he totally energizes the restaurant with his positivity and genuine aloha spirit. We look forward to coming back again and again. The Rum Fire is the premier restaurant at the Sheraton on Poupu. It was actually hard to get an early reservation but when we arrived there appeared to be plenty of table. The hostess was accommodating. The waitress was kind but too busy. The environment was loud and more like a bar than an elegant restaurant. The food is adequate but my Hawaiian Jerk Chicken was the saltiest meal I ever had. Unfortunately, my waitress was so busy, that I couldn't get her attention. The menu is limited and prices are ok for Kauai. The chef did apologize and provided a free desert. Overall, it's a fine place if you don't want to venture out but I'm sure there are higher quality meals in Poupu. read more

Great spot for a sunset cocktail. Pretty awesome "vacation cocktails". That is, the blended drinks are super tasty (especially the rum fire mango mojito). Add a nice sunset, and this place is perfect. They made us buy food too in order to get the prime sunset booth, but it turns out the grilled opah was pretty delicious. read more

If I could give this restaurant a negative rating I would. We often travel and eat at many high end restaurants. We came in and were barked at by the hostess saying "We don't open for 9 minutes". From the get go we were made to feel unwelcome. We then had wine at the bar. The bartender couldn't take one second to talk to us. He never smiled was very unwelcoming. We were staying at the Kiahuana Plantation just down the beach and came here because of my mother. This was a huge mistake. My husband ordered the pink peppercorn chicken which was dry. I ordered the special of the day-- new york steak. This bad dining experience started with the host. I made a reservation for 7pm and still had to wait. Please keep in mind it was a slow Tuesday night. After waiting, we sat down only to wait some more. Our server LESLIE (server id: 903790052) came to our table, DID NOT INTRODUCE HERSELF and proceeded to ask for our drink order and told us the specials for the day. Because we had been waiting 15 minutes for her to even come to our table, we knew exactly what we wanted to order for an appetizer. I told her we wanted to order an appetizer, in which we said, "oh no, I need to get your drinks first and then I can get your app order." Not only did I find this a little confusing, but we had to wait another 15 minutes for her to come back with our drinks! Once we ordered our appetizer she left without asking if we were ready to order our entrees. 40 minutes after still having menus on the table she comes over and takes everyone's order only to wait some more. Not only did I receive the wrong food, but she didn't even apologize for the mistake. my food was cold, cooked at the wrong temperature and my side was incorrect. $500 later I feel taken advantage of. This is not adequate service for this establishment. I hope the manager reads this to further explain my dining experience. Until then, I will spread the word to everyone I know not to dine here unless you like to wait 2 hours to get your food and get treated poorly. read more

My wife and I loved eating at this restaurant during our first visit to Kauai. The view of the water gives this an extra star. The service was excellent and my wife and I both tried the special, a fish called mongchong (a.k.a pomfret). Cocktail choices and wine were great too. They pour the right amount of alcohol in the cocktails to justify the price. While the final bill was large, it was worth it for the experience. read more

We are staying at the Sheraton in Poipu and finally tried Rum Fire last night. We didn't have a reservation but were able to be seated fairly quickly which was a nice surprise (although I do recommend a reservation.) Our server, James was very knowledgeable, friendly and entertaining without being intrusive. He was helpful with the menu and shared the SPG wine specials (free bottle of a basic cab or chardonnay or $20 off any bottle on the menu) which we took advantage of. Their wine prices are far cheaper than other high end restaurants on the island anyhow so we were able to take advantage of the $20 off a tasty Duckhorn merlot. Not many appetizers jumped out at us so we chose the shrimp lumpia- it was wonderful! Plump shrimp wrapped in an egg roll wrapper with a bright tasting dipping sauce with just a hint of cilantro- it was very tasty. My husband enjoyed the fresh catch with a light basil sauce and I recommend the paella with the fresh catch mixed with shrimp and clams as well as sausage. The last time we ate at Rum Fire a couple of years ago we actually were a bit disappointed. It seemed like they were trying to hard to be "hip". It was noisy and disappointing at the time. This time, while they still had the popcorn instead of a bread service, the music was a nice addition and the meal was terrific. We will be back this trip but we'll make a reservation just to be safe. read more

Beautiful inside and beautiful view. Our server was very good even though she had just been triple to quadruple sat. Everything started slow as a result of this. Poke appetizer was delicious, watermelon and feta salad very nice. Dad's Grass fed filet is still being raved about a day later. Moms egg allergies were accommodated, which is always difficult. We were very impressed with our servers ability to make it happen when she had been set up for failure with having her section slammed. Server earned five stars, kitchen earned five stars. Was able for redeem a coupon for an appetizer and it was amazing. Got the shrimp flatbread, Oprah for the entree and it was really tasty. The view from our table was absolutely incredible which really made the overal experience. Our waitress Rose was very sweet and she gave great service. At the very end she even gave us macaroons that we didn't order. Guava, lilikoi and chocolate: they were small but so decadent which was perfect after the filling meal we had! At the end of our meal we were able to catch some live music. Obviously a pricier fancy place but the ambience and service made it worth it. It was really cold so maybe the air conditioning needed to be turned down a tad? I got uncomfortable and even with my boyfriends sweater it was hard to bare. My first time to Hawaii and my family decided to have our first meal at Rum Fire. The service was fairly good, and our waiter was very attentive. However, the food was extremely lacking. I had the short ribs which were lukewarm and tasteless, yet seemed to be the best of my family's meals. My party also tried the Mahi Mahi special which was small and poorly described by he waiter. Overall, the food was far below what we would come to expect from such a highly acclaimed restaurant. We will not be coming back and urge others to try some of the other great restaurants Kauai has to offer. read more

Staying at the Sheraton, decided to have a nice dinner on our last night. We went in early, the kids' food arrived very quickly and our waiter was attentive and energetic. The food was excellent: highly recommend the coconut lemongrass soup, but everything was delicious. Unfortunately, as the restaurant got busier it seemed that they were understaffed, as it became quite a wait in between courses. I would've been writing a very different review if James wasn't apologetic, appreciative and helpful. In my 7-y-old's words he "was the BEST waiter I've EVER HAD!!!!!!!!", and that was even after we had been there for over 2 hours. read more

We had just arrived to the Sheraton and it was time for dinner. Rum Fire was the place to eat dinner and also the only place to eat dinner on property excluding the snack bar/coffee bar. We did not explore the restaurant but were seated pretty close to the entrance still having a nice ocean view we could not complain, especially with a last minute reservation. I would not call the atmosphere Hawaiian it was more contemporary but with the great views who cares. Started with the fried brussel sprouts if they where all served like this kids would eat there veggies with sausage and macadamia nuts it made a great combo of flavors. For dinner we had the Kauai Shrimp & Clams with forbidden pasta and the crab crusted monkfish both were very good my wife loved the pasta and sauce the seafood was cooked perfectly. I can not complain about the food but we waited forever to get our main courses the waitress apologized and gave us some desserts to go which where yummy a Ginger & Coconut Milk Crème Brûlée and a tropical baked alaska thing. I normally would not mind waiting but we were with our 2 year old and made a point that time was of the essence as she had already had a long day. My other complaint was the cocktails they had a mai tai menu and I was looking forward to trying them all during my stay but the drink was watery and flavorless. kinda sad as I was told they won a award for it. I hope to go back some time on vacation and if I do will try and get a table facing directly on the ocean and think twice about the mai tai. read more

Arrived with my Family around 7 and we were greeted friendly by the hostess and then waited to be seated, and waited, and waited.... and it wasn't even busy. The Hostess was taking Room Service orders from the Host Stand-- really weird. I finally directed everyone inside where there were some seats... not really a waiting area, more of row of seats. Our server was friendly, but not an experienced dinner server. The delay between courses was crazy and Its one of the only restaurants I know that the servers do not have Pepper Mills... really guys. The front of the house needs lots of training, but if you are going just for the food-- the food is really, really good. The Chef knows what he's doing... and for the Menu design, it is really bad... Half devoted to pictures of cocktails and the other half food. The average age of the diners in this place must be 50 and the font size on the menu is way to small and only easily readable under bright light. My family and I (party of 6 at 6:00 pm), had made these reservations for my 60th birthday. We found the food was just okay. I requested my burger VERY well done-no pink! Burger came back rare, bacon also not well cooked. By the time my food came back my family was done with their meals, so took it to go. My husband ordered an Ono dinner and when the server placed the plates down she told my husband "we didn't have any Ono, so this is Snapper". We paid the same price. The Server, had just explained how it was cooked and what it came with. Couldn't have run out it was only 6:15 and she just told us about it. My husband was never given the opportunity to select another choice. I must say our server was great and fast and worked hard. This situation was NOT of her doing in any way whatsoever! These problems were created by the kitchen not paying attention to the orders, and pushing a meal on to customers that they have extra of or not informing the staff they were out of. The restaurant gave us free dessert, but even that was a hard choice if you don't care for everything coconut. Unfortunately, to show our unhappiness of this meal, we refused to tip. The restaurant adds the tip automatically for groups of 6. Although it was not the servers problem, we want to make clear. We recently celebrated our 50th Wedding Anniversary with a family dinner at the RumFire in the Sheraton Kauai Resort in Poipu Beach. It was a perfect evening! There were 14 of us including 6 small children, and everyone was happy! We were seated in a 180-degree ocean-view windowed alcove overlooking the crashing waves. It was spectacular! Our waiter was Drew who was excellent and very attentive to all our needs. A variety of dishes/entrees were ordered, and food and drinks were outstanding. For dessert, we were able to bring in a wedding cake with our original "bride and groom" atop which they graciously served. It certainly was a night to remember! Many thanks to Ryan Mora, Restaurant Manager, with whom we worked since January in planning this wonderful evening. He was exceptional! Complimentary valet parking was also a plus! We came it right before sunset and the place was just dreamy. Classy, romantic, interesting. Feels like being in a cruise ship looking out at the volcanic beach. We started with shrimp Lumpia for appetizer. Perfect balance of flavors. Easy on the salt and sugar so you can taste the natural flavors of the meat and crust. The shrimp was fresh and cooked just right (not too raw and not too overdone). The crust played off of the shrimp perfectly and made it taste like softshell crab leg. Then we had coconut-lemongrass chowder. Wow. It had a really original taste. Best soup/salad combo ever tasted. Again more on the natural flavor of meat and vegetable/herb than the refined flavoring allowing for more complex and sophisticated taste. For entrees we had the paella and forbidden pasta. Beautiful dishes visually. Paella was also original. Better than Spanish version in my opinion as it had more interesting flavor. All the ingredients complemented each other in the Paella perfectly. The pasta had squid ink to make it black. There was a light hint of curry that complemented the other natural ingredients superbly rather than overwhelm it. We're more into quality than quantity so we love this restaurant. Portions are smaller than normal restaurant but that is what we prefer. We feel better and lighter after the meal and enjoyed the experience more. We also prefer the natural flavors of the meats, herbs and vegetables to the refined flavoring additives like salt, sugar, vinegar, peppers. We prefer more complex and subtle flavoring to the food. Very different than the typical American food and that makes it more compelling. Why eat the same things when you're on vacation. Each dish had a unique aroma that further stimulates the pleasure of eating. I also had the Rumfire Mango Mojito and Zaya rum at the end. Best mojito ever. Best rum too. Had that oaky, smoky flavor to it which was unique. Finished with Baked Kauai for 2 and they flamed it for us right before we eat it. Delicious. Also had beautiful live guitar/singing in the background. Waiter was smart artistically, friendly and funny. Felt like a great adventure in dining with all the senses fully treated and massaged from visual to smell, taste, auditory and the feeling of being in paradise. We actually saw a group of whales swim close by as the sun set. Probably the best experience at a restaurant and that says a lot since I've been all over Europe, Latin America, America and Asia. A beautiful setting on a beautiful beach at the Sheraton Hotel. We were staying at the Sheraton and were given a gift certificate to use at RumFire. We've stayed there before but had not eaten at RumFire. We had a window table and the view of the surf is gorgeous, however it was raining and so much cloud cover that the sunset was not apparent. The food was okay, not great; started with house salad which was very good, steak came pre-sliced, lobster a little dry maybe over cooked, mashed potatoes kinda dry not creamy, vegetables perfect. We had the chocolate flourless tort with pineapple sorbet for dessert and it was delicious! Our server was very attentive and very nice. Expensive, but a nice experience overall. read more
