I love supporting a local business as well as making my money count. I can do both at Rumford. I find their dog food prices comparable with the big box stores and pet delivery companies. Check their website as sometimes there are extra discounts. I appreciate that my dog food wasn't excluded by their sale (as it WAS excluded at the big box store). Returns are easy, and I'm always earning purchase point discounts without even realizing it. They'll even take returns (at least of some things) as long as it's more than half full. I am a great fan of this small store that packs a sweet treat when you visit ! First they do not SELL animals here...... I run a small rescue (LittleRhodyResccue on Petfinder) and we adopt healthy (sometimes pure-bred) dogs for needy homes. There are simply too many animals that NEED a great home without you buying one from a puppy mill. ((((I am getting off of my soapbox now)))) Thier selection is huge and of high quality and well priced. They have a super program that gives you a $15.00 credit for every (I think it's $300.00) that you spend. Hey, at the rate I buy food and supplies, that racks up quickly! Besides,I don't see any box stores giving me any bonus for purchasing from them. There is also the manager/store owner(??)'s son..... he had a major surgery a little while back. At the grand old age of (maybe three).... He will gently take you by the hand to what you are looking for - A surprising little guy with a heart and soul of complete gold....what a sweetheart! Anyway- yeah my money is green wherever it is spent, but why go to the big box, when you can be treated like a queen by the smallest kings on earth??? Um.... no. I stopped in here quickly one night looking for Stypic Powder for my dog. It was probably a good hour before closing time, there were two younger girls working in the store and no other customers besides myself. I walked in knowing what I was looking for and she quickly brought me over, picked up the container, handed it to me and then walked away. I then proceeded to peruse the aisles quickly just to get a feel for the store to see if I would be back. They have the usual pet store items: food, clothing, leashes, cleaning supplies, etc. No live animals - which I was very happy to see. Checkout was awkward and painful. The girl who rang me out just didn't want to be there and it was obvious by her lack of communication. I didn't get a "hi" "bye" "did you find what you were looking for" or even a "thank you." Rumford Pet Express is generally overpriced and I've also heard a rumor that the Rumford Pet's carry puppy mill puppies which makes my heart hurt a little bit. A deal from sweet deals providence bought me here. It was $25 for $50. I typically purchase dog food/treats from chewy.com as prices are more reasonable. I found a 24lb of Canidae grain free pure (lamb) for $59.99. (65 with tax which chewy.com does not charge) A whopping $11 higher than chewy.com. I asked if they price match but only in print not online. Pet supplies plus matches online. I found them overpriced and probably wouldn't shop there unless it was a sale. They did have a huge variety of natural food, snacks and offer free samples of dog food. read more

This is the only easily accessible place for me to buy Primal dog food and treats...as well as other organic wheat free treats. It also has the non toxic cat litter and orijen and weruva cat food that I buy. Employee wise I find them to be super friendly. They do not even ask for my name or card anymore and have taken time to get to know me. I've witnessed people walk in there to return used stuff and the staff has always been courteous even when being yelled at by people demanding their $6 dollars back for a chewed up toy that they say they no longer want... I have always seen them give full refunds as well. I like that you get coupons (more like gift cards) and they have a point system...I know people say they sell puppies at other locations but if I am basing this off of why I specifically shop at this location (for food and pet supplies) I won't stray away from that for personal beliefs. I have never actually witnessed any dogs being sold...the closest thing I have seen to this are the papers to adopt cats or dogs from shelters etc. They also often have donation type stuff going on which is fun to pick out things around the store for poor furry little things that are in shelters. read more

I was really happy when Rumford opened up because I'd rather support them, as a local business, than the corporate mongers that are Petsmart and Petco. They usually have what I am looking for with a good selection. The dog shampoo I use is called Tropiclean and it's the Papaya one that they're always out of nowadays (popularity? maybe they stopped carrying it?) -- it is the shampoo that has literally the least ingredients I've ever seen in a shampoo. Water, fruit extract and vitamin e. That's it. Which is something I really appreciate as a pet-owner with a dog that has ridiculously sensitive skin. read more

I am a huge fan of Rumford Pet Centers. I think that the simple fact that they are all-natural puts them at the top of the list. The staff is super smart about all their products. GO TO RUMFORD PET EXPRESS! I love my local Rumford Express. It is an exceptional LOCAL business. The store itself is laid out well, with WIDE lanes to allow us to bring our 4-legged friends with us while we shop. The selection is great. I like how Rumford seems to stay up on new products, especially the smaller US companies. I am a customer who often needs help. The Rumford staff is knowledgeable about their products~ I can ask about a brands of dog or cat food and they can tell me ingredients -grain free, etc. Some of them are able to tell us their own experiences with their own pets, because they use what they sell. My dog is very healthy and I attribute it to her diet. Makes a HUGE difference for them when they eat well. The staff is exceptional at Rumford Pet Express in Smithfield. One day I came in with my large dog and one of the employees walked around with me and collected and carried my dog food because my hands were full with my dog. Really?? Awesome. The staff genuinely cares about our pets. They are engaged and helpful~ never too busy to answer questions, offer suggestions. I adore Gina. She is the best. Here is the BOTTOM LINE: B U Y L O C A L. I come in here pretty often, usually once, if not twice a month. I have never been disappointed, I am always greeted with a smile and 'Hello'. They have a great selection of food for my pets. Their selection for my senior boy (dog) is extensive, as well as the OTC supplements. read more

Overall, not my favorite pet supply stop. On the few occasions I've stopped in the staff are always lingering in the front looking bored. The prices are higher than average (we buy blue buffalo regularly) and the staff seem uninterested in animals that come in the store. Don't get me wrong, I don't expect them to fawn all over my dog, but everywhere else that caters to pets seem to have staff who gain some pleasure from being around animals. read more
