OK so my friend Jen Cowan suggested, nay, demanded, that I check out Runza. It's a fast food chain that I guess is regional and their fare is super quick and reasonably priced (even gas here is ridiculously cheap at $2.84/gal!!!!). Anyhow, I got the frings, which I thought would be some frankenstein-esque merging of friends and onion rings, but instead was both fries and onion rings mixed together, so I had to dock a star for that. Otherwise the cheese runza I got was pretty good albeit a bit greasy but hey this is fast food we're talking about. I felt that it would be a great preventative measure if you go out drinking and/or in the morning after drinking. Either way, it's an interesting stuffed bread with meat and cheese on the inside. It was kinda creepy how the bread has this incision on the bottom where I guess the insert the meat and cheese from. Anyhow, that sounds a bit gnarly but check out their corporate site to read the official PR scoop.

Yep, I had to take a picture to show the friends back in L.A. what I was so excited about.

"Try a Runza, a tasty Runza, ground beef and spices, wrapped in golden bread. There's no meal or sandwich like so you've really got to try it, it's a Runza, a meal in a bunza!" That was the jingle from their television commercials from back when I lived in Council Bluffs, and it pretty much sums up what the sandwich is. I wish they would put that ditty on their own web site, if only for nostalgia purposes. A trip back to the Midwest is just not complete without indulging in an original recipe Runza. (If you like, they have Italian and other styles there, too, but I prefer the original.) Anyway, I was back a couple of weeks ago, and as with previous trips, I was not disappointed. I do not even know where to begin to look for something that tastes like this in Los Angeles. And the girls behind the counter were very cheerful and friendly, especially after I sang the jingle for them. This is something completely different in fast service dining.

Upon walking in, we saw the place looked clean and comfortable. We went up to the counter to order, but weren't sure what to get. The person in front of us finished his order and we were instantly tickled to see how they send the order to the kitchen. We asked the person behind the counter what was good, as we were visiting from California and had never been there before. He was great at explaining the menu and giving suggestions. Very friendly. We settled on sharing a swamp donkey burger, fries and a side of Cole slaw. We watched our order whiz away to the kitchen and went to get our drinks. We found a good table, sat down and talked for a few minutes. Before long our order had arrived. The person that brought it over asked if we needed anything else. , and we asked for an extra plate and a fork and knife. He quickly brought it all over, and we felt silly because we didn't see utensils were right next to the drink machine, and we should have gotten them ourselves. I apologized for missing it, but he was so polite and friendly and seemed like it was no big deal. We cut the burger in half, I started on the cold slaw (delicious), and then got to it. The burger was amazing. It was big, perfectly done, and completely hit the spot. The fries were also great. We didn't have long before we gad to get back to the hotel to get ready for the flight, and having already paid at the beginning, it was quick and easy heading out. I don't know if/when we will be back to Council Bluffs, but if we are, we will be back 100% for sure. Highly recommend!

The place is bright and colorful with a fun diner-style vibe that instantly lifts your mood. I love that the ice cream counter is separate from the food ordering because it makes everything fast and smooth. The hardest part was choosing from all the amazing flavors. I went with my classic single scoop of cotton candy in a cake cone because, honestly, I am basically five years old at heart. My husband stuck to his usual double scoop of butter brickle in a waffle cone, which he claims is the best butter brickle in the metro area. My dad went with Just Peachy in a cake cone, and everyone was happy. The only tiny hiccup was my cone being a little stale and missing the little paper wrapper like my dad's had...which I didn't realize mine was missing until I saw him ripping his off! So yes, I love living on the sweet slightly germy edge. Even so, the ice cream was cool, creamy, and completely delicious. Perfect for a Sunday night treat. We will definitely be back for more!

I met my friends here for dinner a couple weeks ago and the whole experience was really surprising,…read moretbh, but in a good way. One of my friends has been here with his co-workers a few times but I haven't been here before. (Maybe one time many many years ago that I don't remember....) We walk in on a Monday night and there were a few people there. It's a small place so I'm glad we were able to get a table. When we sat down, the bartender, (waitress as well), came right over and took our drink orders and eventually our food orders. I wanted to try their renowned broasted chicken. (A device essentially uses pressure cooking and light frying to create a thin crispy skin and juicy interior). The chicken was some of the best 'fried' chicken that I've ever had, seriously. Super crispy skin and juice inside. Reminds me a little of Korean fried chicken. The texas toast was yummy, the cole slaw was creamy (if you like creamy slaw), and the crispy tots were crispy delicious. My friend got a broasted chicken sammich and he loved it too. (High praise coming from him.) My friends and I have been wanting to go back and get more broasted chicken since we left. On Fridays, they have a 4 piece special for $13.99 that I'll have to take advantage of soon. All in all, this little bar/restaurant has some amazing food that I just didn't expect after driving and running past it for years. Can't wait to go back.
