I had to go to Iowa to experience my first Runza, which is so wrong. The place was packed just as the Delta variant came to town and it was suggested by the cashier that I join the COVID party and remove my mask as well but I politely declined. Being my first visit I opted for the signature roll and was not disappointed. They're great! Now that I've had my first Runza I feel like a Nebraska native and that's not a bad feeling at all. My parents got me a Runza GC for Christmas, which is the perfect gift for me as I love Runza but only eat there once or twice a year. I went to this Runza on a day off, last Tuesday, and the experience was pretty good. I walk in and step up to the counter but had to wait a few minutes as nobody was up there; not a huge deal, but an inconvenience nevertheless. I placed my order and the cashier suggested that I order a different way to get the cheapest price. HECK YEAH! A lot of fast food cashiers don't care enough to mention anything if its possible to save money. I ordered a swiss muchroom Runza, large fry, and a small hamburger. (And I demolished it all in one sitting). The food was awesome. The Runza was tasty, the fries were hot and crispy, and the hamburger was dang good. Busy lunch hour, stopped in to grab a to-go order, super friendly, super fast, meal received as order, clean - Can't ask for anything else

OK so my friend Jen Cowan suggested, nay, demanded, that I check out Runza. It's a fast food chain that I guess is regional and their fare is super quick and reasonably priced (even gas here is ridiculously cheap at $2.84/gal!!!!). Anyhow, I got the frings, which I thought would be some frankenstein-esque merging of friends and onion rings, but instead was both fries and onion rings mixed together, so I had to dock a star for that. Otherwise the cheese runza I got was pretty good albeit a bit greasy but hey this is fast food we're talking about. I felt that it would be a great preventative measure if you go out drinking and/or in the morning after drinking. Either way, it's an interesting stuffed bread with meat and cheese on the inside. It was kinda creepy how the bread has this incision on the bottom where I guess the insert the meat and cheese from. That was the jingle from their television commercials from back when I lived in Council Bluffs, and it pretty much sums up what the sandwich is. I wish they would put that ditty on their own web site, if only for nostalgia purposes. A trip back to the Midwest is just not complete without indulging in an original recipe Runza. (If you like, they have Italian and other styles there, too, but I prefer the original.) Anyway, I was back a couple of weeks ago, and as with previous trips, I was not disappointed. I do not even know where to begin to look for something that tastes like this in Los Angeles. My husband asked for a dinner recommendation from his consulting gig and the response was, "Try Runza's. These Nebraskans LOVE them. I'm from Michigan, so I don't get it, but they're really popular around here." Well, who could pass up that glowing recommendation?! A Runza is like a loose-meat sandwich with onions and cabbage. Definitely onions; I didn't see/taste any cabbage. They look like little subs and of course the picture showed them with meat about an inch high and the actual sandwich, bread and all, was less than that. It was good, though, and filling. I liked the spice in the meat. I'm really not a huge onion fan, so I think next time I'd go with a burger, but it was good. I'm glad I tried it. My husband got a double cheeseburger and really, really enjoyed it. He thought, too, that it seemed a little small for the price, but it ended up being very filling. Our little guy claimed he wasn't hungry but then ate his entire kid's meal of two chicken strips, fries, and milk. The fries are REALLY good. They're crinkle fries and they were crisp and perfectly salted. Really delish. The dining area is small, but not cramped. Cozy, I would say. The menu is nice and clear. I should've tried the "Frings" which are fries and rings mixed together. That's marketing genius right there - who doesn't get excited when you get a bonus onion ring in your BK fries?! Oh my gosh!!! This was so delicious. I wish we had this back in Southern California. I have been on a road trip with my family for almost a month and this is by far the best fast food we have trip on our trip. It reminds me of the stuffed cabbage and meat rolls I've had in Russia. I was visiting the Nebraska area for the first time and I had heard that I had to try a Runza sandwich. Well, I did and WOW! Delicious! Bread is soft and filling is tender and flavorful. And for a fast food place the staff was very helpful. We mentioned that we were from out of town and the worker told us that next time if we call in advance they could freeze some for us so we could take them with us. Only downfalls are that some locations are not open Sundays and definitely not diet friendly, so probably good that I don't have any of these around me! read more
