Nice enough helpers. Didn't have to wait. Good customer service. Went in for just a key. Much to my surprise the total was $4.90. I asked if he was sure, said yes, the owners wanted them to charge even more. While I'd like to support the local, individually owned shops, this feels like I'm being taken advantage of and disrespected. Just for grins, I called Los Gatos Ace on Los Gatos Blvd. $2.70 for the same simple no frills key. If the markup is 60% on a key, what are the other markups like? Privilege of supporting local businesses does not extend to being taken advantage of. Especially when there is another store in town that also provides great Customer service. read more

My son needed spray paint for his first job of painting curbside numbers on residences which he ran out of. We showed up at 6:15pm after he googled the closing time of an ACE, the lady working saw us try and open the door and quickly answered and said come on in. For that kind of old fashioned service, just head to Rural Supply in downtown Los Gatos. Brothers Ken and Tim Nelson have built a successful business over the decades catering to local do-it-yourselfers just like me. They'll answer your questions and offer advice even if you don't buy anything. I also like the fact that they employ local kids in the summer and year round. Small neighborhood hardware stores like this are a dying breed. I was delighted to find this old fashioned hardware store on the edge of downtown Los Gatos. It has a small supply of almost every basic item and a few more odds and ends. It was busy, too, which was nice to see as the economy is still plugging along at a snail's pace. read more

Very dissatisfied and disappointed with the complete lack of of service I just received. Store is going through updates and they are relocating and restocking their inventory and the store is understandably disorganized and things are not where they might normally be. Totally understandable. I get that. After spending my time making my way through the entire store looking for the 5 items I came to buy I could not find them. Made it all the way to the back counter where I encounter an employee on a computer who asked me if I needed help finding anything. I said that I did, providing the information on what I was looking for. He pointed and told me that is "up in the front right of the store". I told him that I had looked there and did not see any of the items I needed. Then, with him knowing that the store is disorganized and that area in particular is being gone through pretty heavily to be reorganized simply said, "that where it will be" and went back to working on the computer. I am a customer in the store looking to spend my $$ with a local merchant but that are not willing to reciprocate with basic customer service.. I do not recommend visiting this store and I will never be back myself even though this business is only a few blocks from my home. read more

I don't know why it was impossible to find the right table/foot pads online and big box hardware but Rural Supply Hardware (An Ace Hardware) and only this store had what I wanted. 1.75-inch round self leveling adhesive feet saved my day with table as did square pads for liquor bar. And I found the right sized rubber washers to apply to spherical wine rack feet to prevent sliding. Just could not find these. I also have bought garden supplies here, hardwood, and wood inserts with hex screws - staff is really helpful tracking down solutions. read more

Man, I love this place. I find the owner and his staff to be some of the friendliest, most helpful hardware people I've ever come across. That's why I was shocked to see a couple of the reviews here, but I guess everyone has a bad day from time to time. In any event, I come in here all the time with stupid questions about how to hang things. I am never sure what kind of hardware I should use for the job at hand, and they ALWAYS help me figure it out. Typically I work with the owner, but Parnell is a a gem as well. They've hooked me up with the right screws / washers / lock nuts / fasteners for all of my various jobs, without complaint, and without making me feel stupid. Rural Supply is a convenient and well-stocked store. The help is knowledgeable and usually available. It is not as big and busy and other Ace hardware stores, but that ,actually, is one of its appeals. Before the Saratoga store opened, this was my go0-to hardware store. Now I have one close to home. Seasonal items are interesting here and after-season sales or very good. I still come here for that! Parking can sometimes be dicey, so it is best to go mid-morning or after 2:30. read more

If you live in Los Gatos you have two choices for hardware stores, Ace-Rural or Orchard Supply on Los Gatos Boulevard. On several occasions Rural has saved my behind, the last being when my plumber with my assistance dug up and repaired our damaged sewer line. We ended up knocking out 3 sprinkler lines in the process which is pretty par for the course, It was 4:30 p.m. and I wanted to get these lines fixed ASAP so we could close the trench which would allow my gardener to get the sod in place. I wanted to avoid heading to either of the Home Depots, and gave Rural a shot, sure enough they had all the piping and fittings needed to fix our damage. I would give Rural 5 stars and I really like buying from a small family run business, but on every occasion I have visited them the cashiers have been pretty checked out as they wished they were somewhere else. Personally I could care less as I imagine if I was 16-18 I would also want to be somewhere else, like on a beach in Santa Cruz. But, in case any of the Yelpers were expecting a very cheery greeter/cashier be warned. read more

Ace is pretty ok. They have most of what you need, though the store is definitely much smaller than your box gignormous hardware stores that now dominate the sector. This store is kind of the only game in town, and they seem to be suitable for the smaller home projects that pop up. They do have decent garden tools, but if you are looking for flowers, trees, and such, you are better off heading up to the Summer Winds in Campbell. The prices are quite reasonable, and they have tons of staff per square foot. There must be some decent margins in hardware, as their labor costs much be pretty high. The staff is pretty young, but seem to be quite friendly and generally helpful. Dudes rooming the aisles looking to help customers find things, while the girls man the registers up front. You can recycle batteries and lightbulbs here too. Much more pleasant than shopping at Home Depot. read more

Rural Supply (aka Ace-Rural) is one of the hidden gems of Los Gatos. We recently experienced this for the first time. Last Sunday afternoon we were given a thorough overview on vegetable gardening. We came away with great tips from the staff that methodically walked us through the best way to put everything in place. We ordered a watering/feeding trough for our above ground garden, netting and 30 bags of top spoil & potting soil. When I use to live in the downtown area this place was a jewel for me. I still go there from time to time when I stop by the post office across the street. The selection is surprisingly good. The staff has always been eager to help. At the checkout counter they always have some unique things I can use. There is limited street parking and the parking lot to the side offer additional parking, which is nice for downtown. read more

Every single person there can take you to the section you need and help you figure out exactly what item to buy. If you can get this kind of help without the crowds, why would you go anywhere else? I REALLY wish I could say more nice things about this place. I have been here three times and all three times trying to get someone to help me has been absolutely murderous. Given this is the closest ACE to me now.... it sucks. I'm not saying the people are bad or anything but I've flat out asked for help and not gotten it. I couldn't get things down (and LOTS of things are up high) and watched members of the staff continue conversations (personal) while I waited. I finally gave up, climbed up, and got it myself. The poor cashier gal, (who was a sweetheart) apologized for me having to do that and said she would have helped if she didn't have a line. I told her sadly it wasn't the first time it had happened. In addition, our landlord had nothing but problems getting keys made here. I took one trip to the ACE in Willow Glen and it was done. I am wondering if the key machine at this particular store needs to be re-calibrated but nobody has noticed. I am all about the corner hardware store, which ACE tries to be.... but man.... Since I am pretty much stuck, I'm hoping my experiences will get better. If they do I will update. read more
