Both buying & selling always has issues & drama, whether it's running the bid up only to come back to me asking me to raise my initial bid. Of all the classic car auction houses I prefer this one. I have used a couple of the competitors over the years and overall I have found Russo and Steele to be the most professional. I saw some negative reviews and was surprised. I have had excellent results as a consignor. I do find that most of the people who get upset with any auction house have unrealistic expectations as to what their car is worth. Bidders will make sure they are at the auction for a good car. I drive back and forth between the different January auction houses to make sure I am there for good cars and to watch my cars drive through. The other bidders I am friends with do the same thing. I have one recommendation. Keep a spare set of keys to your consigned cars with you. Stuff happens, be prepared. read more

I talked to a few car buddies that consigned with RS. They were very negative. Still, due to a lower consignment fee, I went with RS. It was not a good experience. They shuffled my truck through with no details on all the custom features and hammered it in a minute. I lost a ton of money and the fee they charged was more than the contract fee. I complained and was ignored. I know I got about half what it should have brought because I had a bonafide offer from another auction buyer and RS convinced me they would do better. There was a seller at RS who had a really nice Camaro I was interested in and he was smart enough to set a reserve so he just refused to sell. I have gone to auctions here over 20 years. There are so many auctions going on only the best draw the money. If you want to do it anyway, don't do NO RESERVE. read more

Scammers, don't ever consign your car with them. They will tell you everything they can to get your car into their auction. They say they have buyers with money but its simply not true. They park all the cars on dirt, nothing looking at buying your dream car that is all dirty parked in gravel. No running water at their auction sites, enjoy the port-a-johns. Results matter and while these are professionals they are just fancy used car salesmen and don't deliver on the dollars. Bottom line - these guys will sell your car but you won't get your price and probably not even close. They delivered less than half of their estimated low appraised value! As a professional car builder and customizer, we expect to produce the best possible product for our customers. We recently had 2 experiences with the team at Russo and Steele which led us to decide we simply cannot do business with them any longer. Our first experience was in Monterey in 2012. To make a long story short the cars were stored outside by the harbor and not under tents. Our car was bombed by seagulls, and to be honest, the amount of foot traffic that our car received was minimal. During the auction, almost all the no-reserve cars went for much lower than I would have expected, and the lots that sold most were the European marks. Not really something that you would expect from a company that prides itself on American Muscle and hotrods. Our car failed to meet its reserve, so we brought it back home. Looking at the other results from Monterey, it appeared that none of the american car auction companies had a great experience (Perhaps RM excluded)....so we decided to take another shot at the 2013 Scottsdale auction which had a much larger and more diverse catalog of vehicles. While all the cars were under tents, they were parked on gravel leading to a constant dust covering on the vehicles. One of their patrons even took their finger to the trunk of my 60K hot rod and wrote the words WASH ME...real class. The main issue that we experienced....as did many many many of the other sellers that we spoke to, was a real lack of qualified buyers in the auction. No reserve lots went for incredibly small amounts and many many of the reserve lots did not sell. By the time one of our newest builds (a 1954 3100 pickup) which had been selling all day long for 33 over at the Barrett Jackson auction, there were no bidders in the house and we barely made our "reasonable" reserve of 24000 (actually 23000 with a lowered commission which made my take the same). In the end, we cannot recommend Russo and Steele unless you are looking to buy cheap or just dump your classic car to spite your soon to be ex. They just don't have the pull to bring in the qualified buyers who are all over at the Barrett auction it would appear. We expected our take for 3 vehicles to be in the neighborhood of 100K and went home with 55K. I'm not greedy, but this is my business. I produced 3 lovely cars for this event. Their job is to bring together qualified buyers and sellers. And from the catalog I saw, they know how to find suckers willing to sell their cars, but they absolutely suck at bringing the money to the room. On the customer service side....They work well with you through the consignment process and are very helpful....but in the end, you need to bring the money to the sellers and that they did not do. read more

I bought the car back and the overall experience cost me significant $. Love this event every year! This is the second time it will be at Salt River Fields and I think the new venue is fantastic. If I could give a negative star rating I would. I have purchased millions of dollars worth of cars trucks and equipment over the last 30 years in all kinds of auctions. Russo Steele is one of the biggest sleazy slimy operated companies I have ever come across. Drew Alcazar is nothing more then a crack head used car salesmen that would screw his on mother if he could. He expects the same lack of profesional ethics from his managerial staff as well. I made an offer on an unsold vehicle at one of his auctions and the counter offer came back way to high. I then at that point did not want to accept the counter offer. I then discussed with the Russo Steele sales rep that I would not want to further my offer and would like my offer too be canceled and ended. He assured me this would happen., Five days later and three days after the auction I got a call saying I had purchased this vehicle. I expressed my thoughts on this and requested a manager to deal with me. I had to wait some time for this. Finely I got in contact with Drew's manager John Bemiss. We discussed this situation and produced the documents I signed. I had hand written the price I wanted to offer on the vehicle plus the 10% bidders premium and signed it. Then someone crossed out this amount after in different hand writing and a different pen color and increased the price for another $1000.00. John was going to look into this and get back to me on my options on what they would do considering the circumstances. I had to wait for two weeks for John to return my call. When he did he told me that the seller of the vehicle bought other vehicles and Drew decided to make my deal work on this truck to help pay this guys purchases. I asked why this was now apart of this problem? John said Drew decided to wholesale this truck and would charge me the difference. I told John that if this would have been presented to me as the option then I would have purchased the vehicle for the price I had written and signed my name too. I did give Drew the chance to look at all these facts and make the correct business decision and realize their mistakes.. Instead he was so pompous and ignorant about it I could not believe what I was hearing.. Drew described himself as way to important to even be talking to me or dealing with such a small item. He said this amount of money we are talking about is peanuts to him and he spends more on shining his shoes then that in a week.. I told him that if he is dumb enough to spend $34,000.00 on shining shoes in a week he needs a reality check. He then proceeded to tell me he should be on his yacht playing with his grand kids and he has $800 and hour lawyers to deal with stuff like this. He told me he has my deposit of $10,000.00 and once he burns through that on legal fees he will through endless amounts of money at it just on principle... I have spent the last 30 years making deals and growing my customer base to what it is now.. I have respect from my clients and my staff as I believe that doing a fair deal is worth more then screwing one client to get ahead. I believe that there is always a solution to every situation. I tell my staff to come to me with solutions not problems. This stuck up ass has not a clue on being respectful and from someone that I guess came from nothing sure does not respect how he now as a few dollars in his pocket. The biggest mistake these new millionaires have is usually they mistake their good luck for brilliants... Would never recommend running a car through this auction. They simply do not care about the consignee. All they care about is getting their money, at your expense. I was going to wait to review my experience, but I'd rather tell it while it's fresh. To start, I had a 91 ZR-1 with 6k original miles. Scott Cocuzza contacted me earlier last year when he saw my car for sale. After a few months of debating I signed up for the Newport auction last June. Mind you I live in Tucson, AZ. On my way to the auction my truck had a catastrophic engine failure traveling on the 60 as I was on my way to the auction. I ended up pulling the car out of the trailer and driving it the rest of the way. During that auction Scott convinced me to take the car to emission testing in California and spent around $100 doing so and a couple hours of my time. Long story short, that auction was a flop and had no buyers. So much to the point I've been told by multiple employees, they will not run Newport beach again. Now to the latest Scottsdale auction. I was told by Scott, to run it again in this auction and he would take care of me due to my last experience. Well taking care of me was setting my car to go up Thursday (which I was not sure of, but he told me it's a great day) 9:40pm is when it ran through and was supposed to go at 8pm. My car was also the 5th to last car to run. So needless to say, there were no buyers at 9:40pm on a Thursday. The car didn't meet the 25k reserve by almost 5k. To which, I was surprised it got that high considering how little people where there. To top if off, before it went up for auction we had to demand they clean the car, due to it looked like they literally took it mud bogging. Of course at this point I'm pretty upset. I go back to Tucson Friday without talking to scott. We then come back up Saturday to see if there's anyway to run the car again on Saturday. He tells me yes they can but I need to lower the reserve by 10% in order to do so. So I did on thinking if I got a good day and time getting 5k more wouldn't be a issue for a car that mind you barrett Jackson had just sold a 91 ZR Wednesday with 9k miles for 26k. Well to get to the point they sold it for my lowered reserve, post sale without sending it back through auction. I also had a buyer at the auction that I was speaking with and Scott was completely shady with me about and tried selling it behind my back for less than I wanted, when I told him multiple times let's just run it and see what it does. At this point the car was already technically sold anyway, which nobody told me about I had to ask due to seeing the "sold" sign on my car. When we arrived Sunday it already had a sold sign on it. I asked "Steve" who works post sale and he informed me there was nothing in their system and removed it. A few hours later a "sold" sign appeared again. To which I had to ask a second time and was informed it was sold the night prior for my lowered reserve to somone that called about it. Mind you I never got a phone call or anything. I had to ask them myself. To put it in a nutshell I was treated very poorly by Scott and some of the other staff. If my car would have been run through auction again and only sold for my new reserve I would have been ok with that. But my car NEVER got a fair shot at bringing the money a 2 owner, orginal, clean 6k mile 91 ZR-1 should have. I will never go to this auction again and will be using Barrett Jackson from now on. I have a wide variety of cars and was contemplating bringing my 14 shelby gt500 to sale at this auction as well. Thank God I did not and waited to see how this experience would go first. Terrible experience once again......NEVER again. If you are thinking of consigning a car there, let me help you decide and save you tons of resources, time, money and grief. DON'T! Several years ago I consigned my classic 1969 Shelby to one of their auctions. They pestered me for the car at their inaugural Southern CA auction and promised all sorts of benefits like premiere placement and marketing, auction time, etc. Long story short, none of that happened, car didn't sell. They offered to rerun it at another of their auctions, where it finally sold. I then saw the car sell at a competitor's auction shortly thereafter for 50% more. Recently decided to thin out the collection and sent them eight cars in Scottsdale. Told them I would only send them if I had decent auction times. They made promises up one side and down the other to get the cars, so I shipped them. Again.... Total misrepresentations. Terrible auction times. Few sold and those that did sold for about half their value. It was a very expensive lesson, but I will never do business with them again, and will make sure everyone I speak to knows not to do business with them as well. read more

I wasn't a bidder or consigner, just went to enjoy the event and see some great cars. The cars were great, but the venue stinks. Directions to find the place were confusing, no signs. The parking sucks. $15 to park in a dirt lot a mile from the event. Concessions were outrageous, two beer tents ( one out of beer) $8 for a domestic draft. The music sucked. It may be a good place to buy or sell a car, but as a fun event it is sadly lacking. Considering that this show has been running for years, you would think it was better organized. The quality of vehicles improved every year. I've had some issues in the past here but they seem to be improving every year and getting a higher class. Tried to sell cars in Newport Beach Dunes, they have terrible communication, top to bottom. Never return calls. Spent close to 800 dollars and they have no idea how to treat customers. No chairs to sit down, no food for customers. Terribly run auction. Mailed several docs overnight that were lost. They need serious help. Stay in Az. read more

Not the easiest car buying experience. Registering for the auction in December took 3 weeks. You need to give them information that no one should have like a blank check that is never returned and a copy of your Credit Card. (edit: check was returned with pink slip) A bank letter from your bank that does no good Upon winning the auction, you will have to do everything. Call them 10 times to get your settlement agreement. After you send them everything and wire them 50K. I wired everything by 11:00AM on Monday. Wednesday when Reliable Transport was there to pick-up the car, they didn't have my paperwork???, I had to call and have them search for it. Upon DELIVERY THAT WAS 4 HOURS LATE, THE CAR WAS A DUSTY RAINY MESS AND RELIABLE TRANSPORT JUST LEFT IT THAT WAY. On their website they show the cars being wiped & cleaned with cloths upon delivery....The idiot tells me,"I better get a bucket" WHAT A JOKE! Why did I have the car shipped in a contained vehicle to have it delivered like it hadn't been washed in a MONTH? (edit: Didn't realize that the car would not be washed after a huurricane. On the reliable carrier website, they show a car being delivered and 2 guys wiping it down. If that is a service, it was never offered by Reliable. This should go in reliable review section) Upon winning the auction, my rep, Lowen Sniff, called and said the owner of the car I won wanted to talk to me. After reaching out 5-7 separate times for the info, I was just completely ignored. I wouldn't have minded so much if the car didn't end up on a flat bed after I put gas in it. I had called and text several times thinking that the car might run on Rocket fuel or something, but still after 9 days they have not put me in contact with the owner as the car sits just reeking of gasoline. A simple thing like just getting me the owners contact info in a timely fashion would have saved. time and money and aggravation. Upon reaching out for the pink slip after 30 days, I was told that they were" sent out" by Lowen and he would follow up with tracking. 6 days later, I reached out and was told that it is 30 business days. It would have been better just to say "6 weeks" from the get go, IMHO. Never heard of 30 "business days"? In the end the Pink slip was delivered, as they said it would be at the 6 week mark. It could have been a little better experience with a few minor tweeks, but in the end the car is awesome. read more

As an auction house, Russo and Steele is on their way out for 2 main reasons 1) customer service and 2) sales. Do not expect to receive any sort of decent customer service for consigning your vehicle- whether it's 5k or 500k. You're titles, purchases and no sales- will be held hostage for a minimum of a month with no exceptions. You will get nickel and dimed with fees. They will act like they have a deal on your car and then nothing will materialize. They will barely make eye contact with you when it is all said and done. Maybe the lack of customer service could be made up for will sales, but the truth of the matter is that they are not able to bring in buyers to their sale. You have a very small chance of getting even a bid on your vehicle let alone selling it for a reasonable price. Overall, the company needs to seriously reconsider their practices if they expect to survive. read more

Only cheap cars no reserve sold. Found my keys in someone's pocket next day. Held it to Sunday, big money on Saturday. Battery dead Sunday again pushed across bock, dirty did not make reserve again. I have been going to this auction in Scottsdale and Monterey since 2010. I have been successful in purchasing some cars for reasonable prices so I keep coming back. I have been to all of the other auctions and Russo and Steele. My impression is that These other guys could care less about classic cars as they are too rich to care about regular car guys. The owners at Russo and Steele at least gave me the impression that they cared. I have seen Russo and Steele consistently put on a great show. This year they have absolutely killed it. Probably the most unprofessional Auction outfit I have ever been involved with. They lost my Title so could not sell my car and now they are unreachable for me to get my money back for even the Title replacement, much less my costs to get them the car. I have been attending this auction for at least 10 years. John B and Dallas- everyone has been nothing but great to be around and very helpful. The cars are awesome and can get some pretty good deals here. I prefer this auction over the Dog and Pony show Barett Jackson because the people here treat you like a person and you feel like family there. I have purchased over 10 cars and sold three cars over the years and the experience has been nothing but positive. The staff- especially the women at bidders sign in are so sweet and always a blast to talk to. I can't recommend this place enough and look forward every year to attend. I've been meaning to write this for awhile...My family and I attended the Russo & Steele auction in January (2014) in Scottsdale while we were visiting family. We went there to see the cars and my husband ended up becoming a registered bidder. Although we were out bid on the two cars we liked, the process was exciting and fun. The staff was courteous and helpful as we were first timers. We will attend the event again given the opportunity works with our travel schedules. read more

1st time selling a car in the jan 2019 russo & steele auction. beautiful 1951 Ford Victoria Custom-very clean, etc. sold no reserve & not happy with the amount of time auctioneer spent promoting it while on the block. price was disappointing. should have sold with reserve (my fault). much smaller then barrett-jackson--less sophisticated with fewer bidders hurts potential sale price. lower priced, less exotic cars are sold on thurs 1st auction day- means fewer bidders and less excitement- also placed in tent farthest away from auction site so are fewer lookers .wish I had used Barrett-Jackson. read more

I consigned a $40k class vehicle at the last minute for the 2010 Monterey Car Show. The staff was very helpful and professional, did all dealings over the phone. 1st time consignment fee was $900 for me. If the car sold, another 10% of the auction price went to the dealer. It is not cheap to do this event. Consider it entertainment, not a smart way to sell a car. Good luck finding a junk motel for less than $200 per night. I stayed Saturday night only for the show. I drove in very early, middle of the week, the team was just setting up. I had to leave the car for three days before returning for the auction. You should have seen the guys unloading cars from semi trucks transports, what a mess. I saw a dozen damaged cars in a very short time of looking around! Glad I drove in! The transport companies were the expensive ones too! The entire show was reasonably well organized. I was not happy with my car showing for auction Thursday night, no one was there! The dang show had not started yet, people were still in route to the show! R&S had too many cars and expanded back to Thursday. I should have rejected the Thursday showing date. Apparently R&S had not done this Thursday auction at Monterey before, why did this happen to me?To make things worse, my car rolled through almost last, near 11pm. Bidding was a joke, it was a vulture fest, these guys were picking off the financially weak and desperate. There was no high value bidding going on, I mean zero! The crowd was full of shady used car dealers and predators. I was not comfortable in this crowd. I bet less than 10% of the cars up for auction sold. Of the ones that did sell, I bet 1 in 20 got the asking price or higher. I was horrified! This is not what I signed up for. Is the economy that bad, holy crap! The auction was well executed and clear, the real buyers just never showed up! The auctioneers were holding a good face, but I could tell they were frustrated, and longing for a repeat of 2007 style action. Party is over people, the bottom has fallen out of the classic car market. Only museum quality stuff is holding value. I was not happy with the multiple garage arrangement showing consigned cars. I was angry with being on the top of the farthest parking garage from the hotel and show! 5 blocks away, up three flights of stairs?!?! Top level, exposed to the environment?!??! I paid $900 for this! No kidding, my car was soaked in sea spray and seagull crap every night. I had no idea this was where they parked my car after Monday drop off, until I came back Thursday. I never park my car in conditions like this, Russo and Steele should know better. At least they could ask owners to provide car covers for their crew to install. Mine was in the back seat, no one bothered to do me a favor. You apparently have to pay a attendant to keep your car clean. My car arrived clean, and should stay clean, no need for damn attendant. The prime garage was 3 blocks down from the hotel, and had good foot traffic, at peak flow Saturday, I bet it was 1000 people per hour. Peak foot traffic in the remote garage, 3 floors up, was max 200 people per hour on Saturday. The crowd seemed to be very stuck up, California Elite, Golf Club crowd, not really my kind of people. It was entertaining, but not good old boy territory, I felt out of place. I really needed to sell my car! I enjoyed participating in a classy event, say I did it once, but never again. I should have just attended, left the car at home, and laughed at guys worring about their cars. I can sell my car online or at a county fair car show and get as much as these guys. If your car has a historical significance, ultra low production rate, and documentation that would make a lawyer proud, this might be the show for you. Anything less, even if it is a stunning beauty, should stay away! read more

My January 2019 Auction dealings with Russo and Steele produced excellent results. I consigned a 1937 Ford 2 door Sedan Hot Rod with them for the Scottsdale auction. I was pleased with a Saturday afternoon slot for the car and they were accepting of my requested reserve. I had all of my pictures and paperwork in early which allowed them to do what they do best and market the car ahead of the auction. Saturday afternoon came, the car while in staging was attended to by a crack team of detailers prepping it for the block. I personally armed the auction staff with any and all information and documentation that I had for the car as to strive for top money. They worked the car hard over the block and it got close but not quite to where I was ready to let her go. My beauty then went to the POST SALE area where the POST SALE staff went to work. Before I left the site Saturday evening they had secured a deal for the car that made myself and the buyer smile. I look forward to future dealings with Russo and Steele and appreciate their personal attention. read more

Absolutely Horrific Experience!!!! Went to the Newport Dunes auction with my elderly and handicapped parents. We're told that they could access the site in their golf cart to view the cars (NOTE: we asked twice if this would be ok-and we're assured it was fine). Paid $20.00 each to look at the cars, and after an hour or so, my parents started to get tired and wanted to take a break and return later. As we were leaving, we were informed that the golfcart (and my handicapped parents who rely on the golfcart to get around) would not be allowed to return to the auction. My elderly parents were very upset by what seemed to be a clear violation of ADA laws allowing equal access to handicapped persons (there was no offer of other alternatives-wheel chairs, etc.). When we then asked for their money to be refunded, due to the fact that they were in essence being kicked out of the auction area, we were told by the Russo and Steele representative (James R.) that Russo and Steele does NOT refund admission fees under any circumstances!! When confronted with the issue of ADA compliance, he was patronizing, rude, and cavalier in his responses, and staunchly refused to work with us!!! Absolutely reprehensible behavior, horrific treatment of my 84 and 82 year old parents, and abysmal customer service!! A company that would condone this reprehensible treatment of elderly and handicapped people , and employ such insensitive and unprofessional employees is not the sort of company that any person of class would even consider doing business with!! Do NOT support this company or their auctions!!!! We will NEVER again deal with Russo and Steele, and would encourage anyone who reads this to take your business elsewhere!!! read more
