The sandwiches are really good, IMO. I love everything parmigiana so I've had all of those from here and the Russo's on 5th Ave--chicken Parm, meatball Parm, eggplant Parm...can't go wrong with any of them. In the interest of branching out a little, I recently ordered the #18 (prosciutto, fresh mozz, basil, & extra virgin olive oil) with sun-dried tomatoes. It was really good. Also, in my opinion, these sandwiches are BIG. They're not cheap, but I can easily get at least two meals out of them. They also come with a complimentary can of soda. The Russo's on 7th Ave has a reputation for being a bit surlier than the one on 5th Ave--a lot of people have said that the 5th Avenue staff is warmer and the overall vibe there is a lot friendlier. They *microwaved* the prosciutto and mozzarella in a plate before putting it on bread they lightly toasted in the panini press. My bill came to $19.78. 1. Totally absurd prep--NO ONE THINKS ITS OK TO MICROWAVE PROSCIUTTO. The point of a panini is that the heat hits the bread, makes it crusty w the grill marks (barely visible) and the heat radiates onto the meat and melts the cheese. Microwaves boil food from the inside out. Clearly they did this to avoid having to clean the press or buy more presses given the time a proper pressing takes. If this was an $8.00 bodega sammie, Id be annoyed but would understand. The price of this *sandwhich* is 16.49 with a soda included. 2. Totally absurd pricing. I weighed the meat on my kitchen scale when I got home. I dont know how cheap this stuff is at wholesale so let's assume you made this sandwich at retail prices at Trader Joes--that means enough for the producer, wholesaler, and retail grocery--and go to a fancy bakery and buy the bread--$2.50. Then you buy a whole ball of fresh mozzarella--$3.99 and a half pound of prosciutto $7.99 = $14.50 + $0.65 for a can of plain seltzer. The markup in NYC is 50%-100% of wholesale food costs. So they made like $9.00 on this sandwich. I guess I'm paying the premium for two guys to microwave my proscuitto for 60 seconds and put it on a roll that was on the panini press while the meat was getting boiled in there. Its insulting. I thought the sandwich was very good, and I'd certainly come back again, but I've also had better deli sandwiches (hint hint Court Street Grocers) which is why this is a 4 and not 5. But please - don't let that sell you against coming here because the sandwich was still great, you can tell they use high quality ingredients, and I'd still come back. I got the Italian Hero - Cappo sandwich and it was super good - I'd definitely get it again, and I'd like to try other sandwiches of theirs in future. The meats are high quality, the cheese is tasty, but the bread is a liiiiitttle hard which is where I think I dinged the star. The service is friendly but it can get very busy here, so ordering takeout ahead is a good move. The store itself is 5 stars - tons of freshly made pasta you can buy in the store as well as Italian baked goods (rainbow cookies, cakes, etc.). Been meaning to check out one of the Russo's locations for a while, and the 7th Ave location won the race. Got the Italian/Cappo sandwich that's been raved about in the reviews. It's a LOT of sandwich. But does quantity equal quality? Yes, and no. Bread was a bit stale, but I do love sesame seeds. Maybe don't order right at the cutoff for the day. But the meats were good - sopressata, mortadella, and salami. Roasted red peppers for some texture and moisture. And topped with provolone (though in hindsight, maybe I should've ordered a sandwich with mozzarella from a place that has "Mozzarella" right in its name. The food is more often good than not. But when it's not, it's really not. I just ordered a chicken parm sandwich in person at lunch time. They made it while I was standing there, and I carried it one block home. Not warm at all. There was no opportunity for a warmed sandwich to get cold. This is not as bad as the time I got a Carroll St sandwich with rancid salami a few years ago. The sandwich was expensive. I tipped reasonably well, and I have food that needs additional preparation before it's appetizing enough to eat. Order at your own risk. One of the best "meals" I've had in a long time came from Russo's. I put meals in quotes because I wasn't dining at a restaurant or doing a takeout. Rather, I decided to grab a panini for dinner at Russo's which is pretty much all things Italian--pasta, prosciutto, Parmesan cheese, paninis and more. I'm not a Sloper resident and I most likely will not be a frequent shopper here, but I liked what this store offered. The space was cramped and the staff-- not particularly friendly, but being the 3rd person waiting on line, I decided to order a panini. I'm not a sandwich or wrap fan but will occasionally indulge in a panini. And Russo's had a good variety. I went with the #9 to go (no indoor seating as it is a store): mozzarella, broccoli rabe and portobello mushrooms. For $9.95 (which includes a free can of soda or bottle of water), this panini was jam packed with said ingredients AND very delicious/filling. I'm almost inclined to say that this panini could be shared for 2. It was pretty big and no skimping on the ingredients. I'm still full. Yummy and good stuff. Try it, you'll like it. read more

Russo's is one of our go-to-places to get authentic Italian pizza flour as well as fresh buffalo mozzarella for our pizza nights at home. The quality of their produce is fantastic and the selection also of fresh, frozen & dried pasta and sauces is excellent. Picked up a truffle pesto gem at our last visit which I can't wait to try! i used to absolutely love this place, but i moved back to the neighborhood a couple of years ago and it just wasn't the same. they've still got a great selection of italian pantry items -- and lots of fresh pasta, though i make my own now so i haven't tried any of theirs in a while -- but their cheese case reeks (REEKS! it's crazy) and the service is t e r r i b l e. the register is positioned so you can't see any numbers when they ring you up and they mumble your total *every time*. they also have a discount for cash, but they don't say whether the price they tell you (which you have to ask them to repeat if you want to actually hear it) is cash or card. i don't need the cashier to be my best friend, or even to be nice to me, but i need to feel like they're not trying to screw me on every transaction if they want to keep my business. (there's another review here that says they shorted the reviewer on their change, so maybe i'm not crazy.) the last time i went here the guy mumbled the total (again) and when i got home i saw that the soppressata he gave me was covered in mold. they're entitled to run their business however they like, but between the moldy salumi, the cheese fridge that stinks like i'm about to get food poisoning, and the staff that seems like they're trying to screw me over, i'm never coming in here again. read more

This little Italian market has some great options, especially in terms of pastas, sauces and the salad bar. We decided to pick up some items for a picnic nearby in Prospect Park. We tried some olives, the stuffed peppers and a few different antipasti (cheeses, meats, artichokes, gigante beans, etc.). We also got two Italian sandwiches. I preferred the salads and finger foods to the sandwiches. My sandwich (broccoli rabe, mozzarella and sundried tomato) was too dry without oil and vinegar. In addition, the rabe overpowered everything else. When I ate the mozzarella by itself I could taste how fresh it was, though. My boyfriend had the smoked turkey, smoked mozzarella and hot pepper sandwich. Again, really good flavors but it needed oil and vinegar! read more

I've shopped here for 10 years and kept giving them chances to be better but it's hopeless. Better options elsewhere! Customer service is lacking. You're rarely greeted upon entering. Workers give you dirty looks or a curt "what are you looking for?" for asking a question or if you're there for what they deem is too long. The sandwiches are skimpy, flavorless and expensive. Bagel Delight reins supreme for heros! The homemade mozzarella isn't salted, tough and chewy. Union Market has better and fresher cheese options! The frozen raviolis are freezer burned and stale. The refrigerated sauces are ok, nothing amazing. Many of the pre-cut refrigerated cake slices had mold. No dates were on the packages to know how long they've been there. They carry a good assortment of authentic Italian pantry products but they're all baking in the windows in the front of the store. Some items are past their expiration dates, which isn't always a problem, but if they've been sitting in the sun for years then chances are they'll taste terrible. read more

Every time I've been to Russo's, they've had the following: 1. Amazing fresh mozzarella. AMAZING. The fresh, creamy, milky kind that you get in the best caprese salads in NYC. 2. Every kind of pasta you could ever want. Some prices aren't as good as others, but the selection is fantastic. Squid ink linguini, artichoke ravioli, fresh pappardelle, spinach tortellini...they really do have everything. 3. Cute kids in bike helmets. OK, so I've only been there once. But all those things were there, and I'm assuming you can find the first two at all times. The third was probably only an occasional thing. The two stars are for the decent selection of Italian foods. The customer service here is atrocious and gets negative 5 stars. And I don't give bad reviews lightly. I live in the neighborhood and only go to this store when I absolutely have to, as a last minute resort. I would rather take the subway to Carroll Garden than come here, which is only two blocks from my house. The workers here have the worst attitudes. Whenever I ask a question-like "can you recommend..." I get a blank stare and they point a general area of the store, but do not offer any recommendations. For example I asked if they can recommend a fresh pasta for a specific dish and they pointed to the fridge...with 20 options. I asked for a cheese recommendation and they point to the cheese fridge...with over 100 cheeses. Today I was there and stood in front of the cash register for 5-10 minutes. I kept saying excuse me...excuse me...is anyone here? Thinking there's someone in the back room. There was a worker stocking the shelves about 2 feet away from me (it's a really small store). Finally, after a while, when no one came to register, I turned and asked him if he can go in the back and help me find someone to ring me up. He looked at me silently, no response, then slowly walked to to the register and rang me up. So he's seen me standing there...asking for help and yelling "excuse me" to anyone in the back room for 10 minutes and he didn't bother to help me until I asked him to help me find someone?!!! Updated (7/21): I went back two days ago, all the staff had masks and they were limiting people coming in. I still think they, as well as many places, have to rework needing a signature with your credit card, but it is hard to change the world. Still a bit pricy but good food. Whenever I walk into a shop or small business in this city--which I have been walking into for the past 40 years-- the first thing that I do is say hello. "HI, hows it goin" . So Last night around 7:15 pm I walk into an empty Russo's to order a sandwich. I walk up to the counter and I say "hello" . Nothing. The guy behind the counter just looks at me like I got two heads. So I repeat myself. "Hi, hows it going" ? He says, "What do you want? " "May I have the #2 sandwich with Fontina cheese, Prosciutto roasted peppers and balsamic vinaigrette. " "Can't do it." So now I'm thinking, did I just walk into Leopoldi's hardware store by mistake? "We just cleaned up." But its only7:15, and they don't close till 8. So ,OK, he does me the big favor and makes my sandwich Which costs $16.00 and 24 cents. I pay. No Thank You. I'm sorry, but When I pay out $16.26 for a sandwich I expect a thank you. We've had these sandwiches in the past and they've been great. Unfortunately, will not be returning due to bad service and no regard to allergies. I called the store before coming in to ensure they had unseeded bread due to a sesame seed allergy. At the store, we ordered and kept being assured that the sandwiches would be put on the unseeded bread. Opened the sandwich and the sandwiches were on seeded bread and was unable to eat it. For the price, and the fact that they weren't busy and kept assuring us that it would be ok is more than enough reason for me not to return. read more

If you've ever made your own pasta from scratch, you know that there's nothing quite like it. It is a taste and texture that no dried pasta can emulate. You also know that it's a gigantic pain in the *** to make and, if you're anything like me, you end up covered in flour looking like Tony Montana after he buries himself in that pile of coke on his desk. The good news is that Russo's eliminates the need to make your own pasta. Seriously, their frozen pasta is nearly indistinguishable from fresh, hand made pasta. I'd say it's about 95% as good as hand made which means it's well worth avoiding the headache of making your own and instead heading to Russo's to pick some up. Being the renaissance man that I am, I have also dabbled in hand crafting cheese. More specifically, I once made what was supposed to be mozzarella but ended up tasting like solid milk. If you've never experienced milk in a solid form, don't bother with it, it's really not that good. Apparently this whole cheese making thing is something of an art. But Russo's solves this problem as well. They sell heavenly little rounds of house made mozzarella that are perfect for salads, appetizers, or just eating on its own if that's your thing. Russo's is easily my first destination when I'm trying to throw together an Italian meal. Drop those bags of dried pasta and head to Russo's next time. You can tell 'em John sent you and they'll stare at you with a puzzled look and charge you full price. But you'll be happy nonetheless. read more

On April 24, 2011, I went to Russo's for the first time. I bought two pieces of lasagne, Italian sausage, 3 meatballs, marinara and pesto sauces. Everything was great until I bit into a very sharp and very hard piece of plastic that was cooked into a meatball. It's scary enough when that happens ever, but I'm also 33 weeks pregnant, so I was particularly disturbed. I would have been injured if I had eaten that plastic since it was sharpened to a point like a knife. The employees at Russo were clearly careless about food safety. I am mailing the plastic to Russo's with my receipt and information, so hopefully it makes them think twice about what they're selling to their customers. 2012 update: Several months after I wrote the above review and sent the piece of plastic to Russo's, they sent me a note, apologizing for the sharp foreign object in the food. They also sent me a gift certificate, which was a surprise. Since the apology and going back to the store recently, I think they have better workers in the market now and that the quality has improved since my first visit in 2011. read more

Russo is my one stop when it comes to Italian cooking. Over the weekend, my best friend and I decided to make our own personal pizza, but to prefect the job we need a really good piece of cheese and that's where Russo came into play. At Russo, their mozzarella is damn right AMAZING!!! On the outskirt, you might not think much, but once the cheese was handed to me at $6.99/lbs, it was still warm to the touch and I was stoked!!! To be honest, I've never eaten warm cheese, EVER!! I know this might sound retarded, but whenever I ordered fresh mozzarella with heirloom tomatoes at a restaurant, it's always served cold or room temperature but never warm. So when this ball of goodness was handed to me, I was titillated with excitement on all ends. Once home, I broke the cheese like I would with fresh bread. As expected, it tasted rich, creamy, fresh and milky and in a serious, for real way, the best mozzarella I ever had!! Russo also sell other Italian specialties like fresh pasta and tomato sauce. They can whip up pretty tasty sandwiches that are perfect for a picnic in Prospect Park. But for me, what ulitimately helps them hit a home run time after time again is their amazing magical mozzarella cheese ball! read more

If you rewound New York to the early 20th Century when every shop was a small, locally owner purveyor of some specialty goods, you'd expect to find Russo's in an Italian neighborhood, perhaps with fruit peddlers out front and next door to the Genco Olive Oil company. The city has of course changed, but Russo's is still a great little shop that sells canned and bottled Italian foods, dried and fresh pastas, containers of fresh made sauces (bolognase, clam, etc.), fresh bread, cheeses and a deli offering cuts of meat or made to order - forearm-sized - sandwiches. It's about the size of Eataly's cookbook section and has 10 times the charm. Places like these make New York what it is, and places like these make my pants harder to put on. First & last time I visit this place. Counter people areN't very friendly or welcoming at all. My friend stopped in to get a turkeu sandwich and said he asked for it without cheese & mayo. Guy behind counter replied in a very snotty tone: 'so you just want turkey, lettuce & tomato?' Yeah... Sandwich was awful- we got a big fresh baguette with 4 pieces of turkey smothered in oil with skin on it. We were so annoyed we fed it to our dogs!!!
