This is one of few places open off season beyond Two Harbors on the north shore. It is a very nice restaurant. The pie selection is awesome! We decided to share wild rice meatloaf which was quite tasty. I am glad that we shared as pie was definitely on our menu. I had the North Shore berry combo with ice cream. The smoked salmon sandwich was utterly tasteless (the only thing I could taste was the tomato and ciabatta bun), there was hardly any salmon on it and what was on it was just dry and flaky little pieces, and there was a minuscule amount of sauce on it (it was supposed to be horseradish cream cheese sauce and it was just a little patch of something orange? yuck.) Truly disappointing. The onion rings were mush, way too big and not at all crunchy - one of mine had three huge layers of onion in it so the onion was under-cooked and still hard. The onion itself was so big the breading just falls off of it. Not great. Overall just a huge disappointment of a meal. Not the worst meal I've ever had out, but very close to it. read more

Heard this hidden gem was better than Betty's Pies and had to try it out. Place was busy at 2pm, so we ordered a North Shore Berry Crumble and it was fantastic. Crumble was crunchy, berries were fresh and tart, not too sweet at all. There were blueberries, strawberries, apple, and rhubarb. My bar for pies is pretty high, but I heard that the best pies in the area are here. And wow, if the pie I got was any indication, they are not wrong. My brother and I got the pecan caramel apple pie and we were so impressed. It was so ridiculously delicious. However, my aunt got the peach cherry pie and didn't finish it, saying it was just ok. So my brother and I both tried it and it was really not good. The peaches were mushy and mealy and the flavor was just bad. I had the smoked salmon sandwich with homemade kettle chips which was to die for. My husband had the pork tenderloin sandwich. He is a connoisseur of the tenderloin and rated it highly. The knotty pine decor was true north shore; although the restaurant is on the smaller size, it has a large patio dining if the weather agrees. The dining space is sure to fill up during high season, so be sure to get there early. If you have to wait, enjoy the attached kitschy gift shop filled with Minnesota memorabilia. read more

Terrible customer service. Friday night I'm On a splo photography trip. Stop in and ask if I can order carry out. Nope short staffed. THEY suggested I go to Blackwater in Two Harbors which I should have. But then the manger says he can seat me. The waitress never tells me the specials and just asks what I want to drink. I order the walleye cakes which were over done. No aioli sauce just jarred tarter sauce. Then got the walleye tacos. small pieces of over deep fried fish. Nasty sauce on top, runny coleslaw and rubbery cheese. It was bad. I make a comment regarding it and the waitress was rude. Restaurant was recommended by a local, as one of the best restaurants in the area. We thought the food was good, but not as good as we had at another restaurant in a nearby town. Had the olive burger, which turned out to be some kind of spread that had very, very chopped up olives in it, which was not what I was suspecting. It also had a bit of a spicy taste, so I wasn't a fan. The fries were really good though, they were very crunchy on the outside and creamy on the inside. Hubby had the BBQ ribs, which he said lacked a bit of flavor. Service was not great, very slow, even compared to other restaurants in the area. With pie and 2 soft drinks, the bill was $50. May give it another try if we were in the area again, but it wasn't a favorite of ours. read more

After hiking around Split Rock area, we were starving. So we stopped at one of the closest places we could find - Rustic Inn Cafe. When we got inside there were quite a few folks, so the flustered host tried to organize people and get our names down on a waiting list (even though there were at least 5 open tables I could see). About 15 minutes later and still waiting, another staff person came up and just started seating people. I spoke up and said we had been waiting for a table and she was confused that there was a waiting list. Either way, we finally got seated and by that point we were hungry and frustrated. The server was quite nice and the food came out quick. I ordered the bacon bbq burger without a bun. It was good, but tasted a little burnt. My husband and kiddo got the hot beef and said it was just fine - nothing spectacular. For dessert we got the gluten free lemon angel pie. The pie was the saving grace of this place. It was made on a meringue crust and the lemon curd was perfectly tart and sweet. I wouldn't go back to Rustic Inn for dinner, but would for a slice of pie! read more

During this, I noticed that there were only one other couple waiting for a table and there were 4 or 5 table and one booth available. There were also 2 other ladies working in the cafe. Have no idea what the 45 minute wait was about, but thought what a rude person. I don't need attitude when looking for someplace to eat. The blueberry pie was creamy, not overly sugary and so was the chocolate pie. I had dinner after hiking so came hungry. Walked in to the cute restaurant to a bit of chaos. No dedicated hostess and no one greeting you to tell you that there is a wait and a waiting list. Finally a server appears behind the counter and we have to ask to be placed on the waiting list. Visited the gift shop during our wait and was ready to make my purchase until we noticed that the girl behind the register was very sick. I mean sneezing, coughing, runny nose sick. No thank you! We left. Finally got seated and excited to try the fish and chips. A special with flown in Alaskan Halibut was advertised at $17, but at 3pm, they were sold out. We wanted local fish anyways. Northern Pike was our choice at $16. It took like it seemed forever to get our food. Finally the food arrives and the server places the plate on the table, a piece of fish slides right off. Was the plate way to small for the food...absolutely. But, he was a little rough with the landing of that plate. Service was just ok and I think depends on who your server is. Believe me...if you're coming here to eat the fish and chips, hold your appetite until you get to Grand Marais. The northern pike was not great. The batter was good, but the fish itself was skimpy. I was not in the mood to eat batter for lunch. Homemade chips were good as well as the Cole slaw. What deserves 5 stars is the pie! In my opinion the only reason to stop. read more
