While eating, we observed soft shell crab being served at the next table. Two days later we visited the Mandeville location. The crab was superior. Came here the other night with the wife and kids. We've been here about four or five times before. This time I decided to try the crab cakes that everyone has been Yelping about. But I wanted a sandwich as well. Booyah! There's a crab cake sandwich named the Old Mandy Dandy that features two crab cakes and remoulade. So I ordered up one of those bad boys along with french fries. I was not disappointed. The bread was crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. I would highly recommend the Old Mandy Dandy. One kid had the chicken tenders and fries--not a real surprise there. I took a bite of the chicken while he wasn't looking. I would have ate it all if he wasn't so hungry. I love the atmosphere here, so do the kids. The 16 year old said it reminded her of a beach bar. Wait...when has she been to a beach bar? Sometimes it gets so crowded there aren't any seats available. Not a big deal when the weather is good. There's a few outside dining tables that are available as well. Drove across the lake and found The Rusty Pelican on Girod Street in Mandeville. Aside from the question of how a living pelican can become rusty, it was inviting. It is located on a very quaint residential tree lined road/street in with ample street. The outside decor just beckoned us to walk in. Nice front porch affords outdoor eating presuming the temps are not in the low 90s with 80+% humidity. The interior has a warm and welcoming decor in clear varnished pine. Very warm. Each wall has a TV with a nice bar if that is your preference. You order and pay for your good and drinks first and the food is brought to your table. Beer is available and the soft drinks are self serve. We had the appetizer portion of the batter dipped deep fried onion rings served with a house concocted remoulade sauce on the side. Very tasty. The portion was more than ample to stave off any hunger while waiting for the main meal. I ordered the crab cake platter which comes with fries. The cakes are made in house and fried. Very nice lump crab properly cooked and the remoulade was flavorful and thick. The fries, a large order by any standard, were the thin cut variety and cooked crisp. My wife had the Lakeshore basket which was a combo of a crab cake and a dozen deep fried shrimp. She opted for potato salad side. This is not a mustard variety potato salad but rather a well seasoned and creamy white sauce version (likely mayo). Whatever, it has a very good flavor. The beer selection is good for a small bar/diner. And they are served cold. I say that because beer should be cold, my preference is 40 to 42 degrees, and Rusty does it correctly. We are often on the North Shore looking for a good, reasonably priced meal with great service. We found it at the Rusty Pelican. It has a comfortable, rustic environment with indoor and outdoor seating. We were greeted at the counter by Stephanie, who was incredibly friendly and very knowledgeable about the products. If she tells you to order something, do it!!! We decided on the fried pickles and she steered us towards the turkey avocado special as well as the all jacked up burger special. I can tell you that both were nothing short of spectacular and the portion sizes were hearty. The fried pickles tasted like the breading you find on fried oysters. Generous portion, cooked perfectly and they are served with an amazing house made ranch dressing. I had the turkey avocado was on a cheddar jalapeño bun, heavy with turkey, melted Swiss, lettuce and topped with chipotle mayo. Delightful! My husband had the all jacked up burger which had pepper jack, cheddar and FRIED pepper jack cheese, bacon, chipotle mayo and said it was everything good and right with the world. These were daily specials so you better hope it is on the menu when you go because you don't want to miss it! The kitchen sent out the fried pickles almost as soon as we had sat down and our entrées came out very soon after. That is one seriously quick kitchen. This is a very good spot when you're craving some sea food. They have a good crab cake that's full of crab meat.. unlike the blended fillers that most have. The lady friend and I stopped in here one Saturday afternoon for a late lunch. It's a casual restaurant that has a very comfortable vibe. The place is small so there are not very many tables inside but quiet a few outside to make up for it. It's a counter service style,so you place your order at the register, pay and then take a number to your table. I'm not a big fan of this type a service especially if you plan to drink more than 1 beer. Anywho, the girlfriend ordered a burger with blue cheese which is her usual with sweet potato fries. I ordered the Firecracker Sandwich but on french bread so as it would be a poboy. The Firecracker Sandwich is Fried shrimp tossed in Buffalo sauce with bacon, pepper jack cheese, fried jalapeno slices and ranch dressing. The sandwich was good but should be served with Tums and a defibrillator. There was too much fried jalapenos and not enough shrimp for my liking. We've been visiting Rusty Pelican for 7+ years now. It's a great stop for a quick bite to eat while in old Mandeville. If you want to beat the crowd, try to show up at first open or just after the lunch rush, as many locals visit during the weekdays.
