Gwendolyn Maitland, the 14th Countess of Lauderdale, divided her time between her castle near Edinburgh and Palm Beach. While in Palm Beach she discovered Ft. Lauderdale named after her distant ancestor, Major William Lauderdale, during the Second Seminole War. In 1923 Maitland helped form the American British Improvement Association which purchased 8,000 acres of land north of Fort Lauderdale including a mile of oceanfront property. She planned to create a luxury resort in Broward County with the help of investor John S. Pillsbury, co-founder of the Pillsbury food company. The name Floranada was chosen from a mash up of Florida and Canada but the American British Improvement Association went bankrupt in 1926 before the resort could be built. This neighborhood in Ft. Lauderdale still bears the name. Floranada Park is almost 10 acres of outdoor recreational fun. Amenities include an athletic field, open area for play, pavilion, picnic tables, and grill, playground, restrooms, and sand volleyball court. Since the park is next to a school it is open daily after school until 9 PM and all day on the weekends. During the weekdays this park is mainly an extension of the school. During the weekends you will find families picnicking, kids unleashing their energy, and friends playing volleyball. This park adds to the vibrancy of the Floranada community.

Fairview Park has a parking lot and restrooms which you don't usually find in a neighborhood park. There is also a picnic area, basketball court, open lawn area for play, and a playground with a tot section and one for older children. Fairview Park can be rented for private events. Winding through the park is a paved walkway for exercise and walking your dog. I was impressed with the many trees are in the park adding beauty, shade and a home for native and migrating birds. As I was walking around people were setting up a tent to sell food providing a real sense of community. Parks like this one are an important recreational resource for their neighborhoods.

It's in a residential area that I didn't know even existed. And it's a nice bit of open greenery for the residents in contrast to the industrial buildings on Dixie. There's a small playground for kids that looks new -- or newly painted. There is a basketball court, walking path, and restroom facilities. Under a stand of trees is one picnic bench and a bbq grill. The large green lawn area is perfect for soccer, frisbee, or possibly a concert. There's a parking lot for cars or for just hanging out with your friends -- as we observed when we stopped by.

This park was named in honor of Rachel Richardson who came to the area with her husband George in 1936 before the town was incorporated. The park honors their early pioneer spirit. Rachel Richardson Park is only .33 acres but there are over 30 native trees planted here including a large flowering Royal Poinciana. There is also a bench and a sculpture called Ice Pops by artist artist Craig Berube-Grey. The park is part of a sculpture walk you can take in Wilton Manors. I love how nature and art come together to brighten this corner in the city. Although most people just whiz by, if you stop for a moment you might be surprised by what you discover.

Just about a block south of City Hall and across from the Dairy Queen. The property contains the main Richardson residence, which was constructed in 1958, and a frame carriage house from 1926. The main residence, Manor House, provides a quaint location for receptions, meetings, special events and office space for the Wilton Manors Historical Society and City of Wilton Manors Leisure Services Department staff. The carriage house is used as a museum and provides artifacts and materials that will preserve the City of Wilton Manors history, culture and heritage. Kayak rentals are available every Saturday and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. There's free parking for those wanting to just stroll the green spaces, come close to the tranquil waters or just relax under the trees.

Wilton Manors, sometimes known as the Island City, really is an island city, but only somewhat, being bordered by the North and the South Fork of the Middle River, and it is in Richardson Historic Park and Nature Preserve that the "Wilton Manors Taste of the Island" event is held wherein numerous area restaurants offer a taste of the culinary arts. It is also here that people enjoy nature walks, bird watching, picnics, fishing, and canoeing, kayaking, crabbing and other leisure activities. The centerpiece of the park is the historic Richardson building, the grandest and most prominently historic (historic because here, other than retirees from the north, things aren't very old) home in Wilton Manors. Built in 1958 as the Richardson's manor house it was sold to the City of Wilton Manors in 2002 and dedicated as a park in 2007.

The thing that sets this park is it has a lot of lovely large trees providing shade. It is also a certified wildlife habitat. At this park you can play half court basketball, bocce ball, or volleyball. There is a pretty basic playground with swings along with a jogging trail that runs around the perimeter of the park. There is an exercise area set up with fitness stations. Other park amenities include a bathroom, picnic pavilion, and a grill. There is ample parking in the lot.

Although they didn't have a lot of land to work with they maximized what they had. The garden has an outdoor amphitheater that seats 40 people. There is also a gazebo, a tot lot playground, and an observation deck. Throughout the park there a walking trail, botanical gardens, and public art. The city of Lauderhill uses the park to stage events like the Jazz Picnic in the Park. This park provides a welcome green space in the middle of the city where the community can exercise, play, and gather together for events.

The outside amenities include a playground (designed for children 2-12 years old), restrooms, sand volleyball court, basketball courts, a 21'x31' pavilion, walking trail, six tennis courts and a Community Center. The Community Center is home to the Leisure Services Administrative offices, Island City Fitness Center and a 48' x 67' multi-purpose room that can be divided into two separate rooms. The facility is also equipped with a full service kitchen with an ice maker, stove, large refrigerator, freezer and a sink. A large screen TV, DVD player, 8′ rectangular tables, 60′ round tables, chairs and a piano are also available. Hagen Park Community Center and Pavilion are also available for rentals, special events, meetings, weddings, birthday parties, reunions, union ceremonies, etc. It's convenient location right behind City Hall makes it easy to find and easy to access.
