Dr. Woolley does not do dentals so Dr. Rowan was able to react quickly during surgery to a previously unknown gene mutation making my girl extra sensitive to sedation. First off!, we LOVE Dr. Woolley!! she's so amazing. very informative, sweet and gentle with animals, and always understanding and apologetic when something isn't explained or addressed well,.. even when it's NOT her fault. That being said, f*** this clinic. we've been charged for things we were VERY clear about not wanting (if my pet actually received vaccines unasked, I'll never know), not being told what happened or informed about what exactly was administered / outcomes to expect, and blatant disregard for getting prescriptions submitted for meds that should be top priority. On top of all this, they were not treating staff properly and had a huge shift in techs and now, with literal exception of two, they are incompetent and just don't care. I can't begin to tell you how much this vet means to me and it's staff. We have had both of our dogs there for eight years and will continue forever. When we are out of town they take care of them, when they are in need they are there for them. They even go out of their way to show up on my doorstep if needed. I've been to many vets over the years and this is by far my favorite. While there are vets closer to me, it is worth the drive. All the vets at this practice are wonderful, but most of my interaction has been with Dr. Rowan. One of my pups (15 years old) is very scared when going to some place different. He shakes a lot while waiting his turn. Dr. Rowan comes in and is so calm and gentle that you can see my pup visibly relax. Dr Rowan has been there for us during all stages of our pets lives. It is difficult moving to a new city and finding new vets, but we are so happy they we found Rutherford Vet Hospital. New customers receive a free exam so if it you don't like the place you haven't broken the bank. Dr. Young examined our boxer and she was so kind and patient. We have had vets who our dog hated (and although she is not a bite she tried to bite), but she LOVED Dr. Young. We had to have her ears cultured and when they took her to the back our dog went willingly and almost didn't want to leave. Recently we went out of state and left our dog with Rutherford Hospital for 5 days. They sent us pictures of her playing in the dog pool, examined her ears again, and administered her medication. They even called to say that she was doing great. At $36 a day we received wonderful service and came home to an exhausted dog. We will continue to take our dog back her for boarding and exams. *We recommended this place to our fiends and they were so happy with the service they received. read more

I have been a long standing customer and as of today will stop going! I can't believe how this place has treated me and my pet today! One of my pets needs to be seen so I called to see if she could be seen asap. The young girl tells me it would be several days before she could be seen and since it has been some time since I was there and I would have to pay a $65 fee before she could make an appointment. I informed her that I was there 2 days ago with my new puppy the response was it did not matter and it would still need to be paid before she would make the appointment. This is just truly inexcusable!!! I just had to hang up the phone, but after thinking about it I called back to speak to the office manager. The girl that I spoke to tells me she is in training and thinking I did not believe her. All I wanted was to speak with the office manager she puts me on hold for 10mins and can make that she was out of the office. I asked for her to call me back and after waiting an hour and 30mins I called back. The young girl puts me back on hold then comes back and tells me both the office manager and asst manager are unavailable and can not speak to me. I stated that it seemed no one there cared about there long standing customers unless they pay for service not rendered! And of course she says that that's not what she said and I said that's what I see after this. She decides she's had enough fro me and HANGS UP THE PHONE. If this is how they are now operating there business I will find a veterinarian office that cares about the pets and the parents! I have allows had great experiences with them. I have been bringing all my animals there for almost a decade, because of their care and professionalism. Sadly, these things are gone. Last year, one of my dogs had some teeth that needed to be removed, and since I have a very small pickup, I scheduled their pick up service. I got a call late afternoon saying they had only done only one side of his mouth. (They we were supposed to start in the morning, but screwed up the time.) Total- $2000. Also, they said they had no one to take him home, so me and my 90 pound German Sherpard rode home in the tiny cab of my pick up (when I was there, they said, oh, we just thought you didn't feel like picking him up- we can have someone take him home. Really????????). They wanted me to come back the next week for the other side, but surprise, I didn't have another 2 grand floating around in my pocket. And now, I took my cat in with a limp. X-rays, exam, 200 bucks, and come back for surgery. Came back, 100 bucks for blood work, surgeon cancelled. Came back this morning, cancelled again cause they said she had a skin infection (um, the vet had already seen her twice in the last two weeks, and you didn't notice then??). Oh, and fyi, you owe us another 75 bucks cause we gave her an antibiotic (they never asked for nor received permission for that). So, I DO NOT RECOMMEND this clinic. They have always been expensive, but they used to be worth it. Now, you're getting hamburger for kobe beef prices. read more

Everything about Rutherford is amazing. All of their veterinarians, techs, front office staff and daycare are caring and compassionate. It's evident they truly care and have a love for animals. Although they're always extremely busy they make sure everyone is taken care of and have what they need whether it be at an appointment, calling with follow-up questions/advice or requesting medical records. My sweet pup Maggie first went there in 2004 and when we went back after almost 15yrs later Maria one of the receptionists immediately recognized her and was so excited to see her after so many years. I was shocked she remembered her after all that time. Maggie absolutely loved going to daycare there and playing in the yard and their pup sized underground pool. She'd get excited before we were out of the car and when I picked her up they had photos of her playtime to send home with us. When it was time to say goodbye to Maggie they came to my home with very little notice. I took my other pup Marley in for a routine dental in January 2019. While under anesthesia one of the techs noticed his abdomen seemed hard. They immediately did an ultra sound and X-ray without wasting precious time trying to reach me. They found what looked like a baseball size tumor and immediately called a specialty vet and arranged for him to be seen. When they called to let me know it was so comforting knowing they had already spoken to them, sent his medical records and made arrangements for him to be seen immediately. He was rushed into emergency surgery for a splenic mass that thank God wasn't hemangioma sarcoma. They literally saved Marleys life by taking the time to do an ultrasound when they didn't have to. This place is amazing. I' ve been taking my cat George and dog Oliver there for many years. Even after I moved to Oak Cliff in 2006 I still make the drive out to East Dallas for vet services at Rutherford. The lead vet, Dr. Vaughn, is so incredibly knowledgable and genuinely cares about the animals he treats. The staff and other doctors are great too, esp. Dr. Young who has been helping me with a very sick kitty (my George of 15 years). The boarding is fantastic and I was able to watch my Oliver on a webcam from my hotel in Memphis. It was so neat to watch him run around and play with the other animals boarded there. I felt good knowing he was having fun and was well-cared for. A big huge plus is that Rutherford takes in strays from time to time and adopts them out. They also took care of a couple strays I brought in there and gave me discounts/free care for these homeless animals. They also match medication if you can show that it's cheaper elsewhere. Simply put, I am so GRATEFUL to have found this vet. We have used their boarding, doggy day care, grooming, vaccination, surgery, spay/neutering, and unfortunately euthanasia. Boarding: we receive a photo every day of our dog and there is a webcam to watch him whenever he plays outside. Outside there are ramps to run up, things to jump through and a tiny little dog pond. Day Care: same with boarding, we can watch him all day if we choose and they text us a photo and print one out for us to take home. Medical visits: Rarely have we had to wait very long for our appointments and we never feel rushed from any of the vets when we have questions. Front Desk: I'm always greeted by my name and the girls are very thorough, prompt and professional. Euthanasia: During such a heartbreaking time, they got us in first thing in the morning, no questions asked and mailed the bill afterward. They also took the time to send flowers and a card the very next day. We also received a tiny clay paw print of our dog. Price: Not the cheapest vet I've visited, but the service is SO worth the cost. I have worked with Dr. Rowan and Dr. Vaughn and had great experiences with both of them. There's so much I could say about this place. I will summarize it though. Dr. Vaughn told me "it wouldn't be that much," to keep my dog for two or three nights and I was quoted around $500 for re-hydration and antibiotics for my dog's ailment. Obviously, he and I are on a different planet when it comes to what is and what's not "too much." Ended up, she stayed three nights and it ended up being a thousand dollars. That seems to be the magic number they try to reach for nearly anything. Dr. Young appeared to be kind and care about the animals, but Dr. Vaughn is just too old and I'm not convinced he doesn't just look at working as a cash cow at this point, for his future generation since I am sure he's nicely set himself. He really should retire already. They must have R.S. Clarke and Associates Collection Agency on speed dial and have a USPS Certified Mail discount card. I paid over $800 of the $1000 bill when I got my dog from them. Since then I have called in four or five times and made a minimum of $50 payments over the phone, this was about 10 months ago we visited this place. Mind you, I paid 80% of the total, which was wayyyy more then I was told it would be and wasn't prepared for such a huge bill. So, because they allowed me to make payments on the remaining measly $200, and I've since paid well more than that, they continued to ADD monthly fees and interest on the remaining small balance. So, even just after a relatively recent payment (within a couple of months), I NOW get a $170 bill from their freaking collection agency.... $150 of which is fees and interest. They never said one thing about fees and interest. This place will nickel and dime you to death. I have another dog and cat I would have brought here, but they are more concerned about that almighty dollar than they are about animals. Save your money, find you a nice country veterinarian. Stay away from Rutherford Veterinary Clinic. They know we love our animals and they prey on that to line their pockets way more than they should. And don't be fooled by the free exam on Yelp! either... they'll figure out a way to tell you they need to test for something or another and get you for some cash on the spot before you walk out the door. So, are they nice? Yes, mostly, they are. Do they care more about animals than cash? I don't believe so. Do they have a compassionate back office staff? Uh, no. I'm sure the previous reviewers truly love this clinic, have every reason to, which makes it both harder yet necessary for me to leave my review of this animal hospital I've refrained from going to since my experience with them. A few years ago, I took a special needs cat of mine, TeeTee Sprinkles, to this clinic because the online research I'd done had assured me that they were capable of dealing with her condition, megacolon. They took a look at her, called in a surgical specialist, I consented to have what's called a 'total colectomy' done. A couple of thousand dollars later, I brought home a cat who was still sick, had to return her for an additional week's worth of treatment and additional thousand dollar's worth of charges, and she was returned to me still unimproved after treatment. Oh, and by the way, after taking her home from the second hospitalization, the clinic called two days later... not asking about my cat, but instead saying that their credit card 'swiper' had malfunctioned, that as a result, my final payment hadn't gone through, and if I could come back in and give them their money, that would be great. It would have been great... for them, but fortunately for me, in that two day's time, my cat was still sick enough for me to not only take her to another clinic, but to also do a phone consultation with one of the country's most prominent veterinary colleges, both of which told me that the veterinary surgeon Rutherford had brought in had performed the wrong procedure, a subtotal colectomy, instead of a total colectomy. I was also told that the medications they'd prescribed post surgery were not the meds of choice. Before I even had a chance to present Rutherford with this evidence, they had a nasty bill collector calling me. Literally just a couple of days after Rutherford calling me to come in and 'redo' my final payment, before I even had a chance to present them with the new vet consultation information, after we'd already paid Rutherford thousands, a collection agency called us, demanding payment. Meanwhile, not a single soul at Rutherford called us to ask about our cat, who, incidentally, was now thriving after a single trip to a competitor's clinic. After sending to Rutherford my findings since picking up my cat from their clinic, showing them the findings from two other veterinary sources, I received a long-winded response from the veterinary surgeon who did the surgery, explaining why he did a subtotal instead of total colectomy, apologized, offered to correct the surgery for free, which I did not take him up on. Rutherford did not apologize to me, however, they did call their collection agents off, and since my credit score was not affected, I'm assuming they agreed that the additional charges weren't fair. Way too long story short, we have not gone back to Rutherford. I am sure that other clients of theirs are legitimately happy with them. Even with my horrific experience with this clinic, I really have only two complaints... one, that when it comes to non-traditional veterinary conditions, they, in my experience, will assure you that they have experience in treating things when they really don't. And, two, I'm really not sure what they care most about... money or our pets. Once again, though, that's just what my experience was. read more

This is where I took my Frances, my first dog. The vets at Rutherford were always so warm and helpful. They followed up every visit with a call, and always made sure Frances was doing okay. My only complaint was that they sometimes seemed to suggest services or treatments that seemed unnecessary. But I'm not sure this is a legitimate complaint; they seemed to err on the side of caution and it was up to me to accept or refuse. After Frances died, I received a thoughtful card from the vet who treated her during her time with me. Shortly thereafter, I received flowers. I was really touched. I now have a new dog. The only reason I don't take her to Rutherford is its location. I live in uptown, and there are vet hospitals that are much more convenient for me. I still occasionally think about going back though... I miss the good folks at Rutherford.... read more

We were walk-ins on Christmas Eve. Had it been anywhere else I'm sure eye rolls would have been the special of the day. We had noticed that one of our kitties had scraped her leg and was favoring it. I'm a nurse, I will deal with human gore all day long but even a wee scrape on one of my babies and I might as well require a fainting couch. Dr. Rowan was very kind to us, very patient with the cats. Fixed up one wound in no time and with very little complaint from the patient and checked out the other one right after. The latter was being a bit fussy and not a fan of the foreign place I'd dragged him to but the good doctor was calming and patient with him. Great visit! I have tried my best to like this place. The front desk staff - Liz, Alicia and Maria are top notch. Unfortunately, the smiling faces and great service stops after that. The doctors, specifically Dr. Young, has the worst bedside manner. While my dog suffered in pain, I had to keep following up with her and stressing the need for alternate pain management plans. At one point during mid discussion she decided to slam the phone on me. Who does that? Oh yeah, someone with no restraint or any customer service skills. I decided at that point to never have her manage my pets healthcare. I did however continue to take my dogs for boarding, daycare, and baths. That however will be coming to an end as well. Today I found out that contrary to typical doggy daycare -- drop off in the morning and they play all day -- here they do things very different without telling the pet owner. My dog has been with them for 7 hours and has only had a total of 80 minutes of play. The rest of the time he has been locked up in a kennel! That is not acceptable. It gets even better! When speaking with Marie (hospital manager) she defended their approach and often times came across as condescending and lacking any sort of customer service. She also felt the need to tell me I was the only person to ever voice these concerns. It's probably only because other clients have no clue that when they pay for daycare, their dog is actually spending the majority of the day in a crate/kennel. Over a year ago I brought in my 17 year old cat, Captain Pickles. I didn't think he was going to make it. He was very sick with dehydration and constipation due to renal failure, and unable to keep food down due to pancreatitis. He was hospitalized for a few days on fluids, and then returned to me for home care. I listened to Dr. Washington and Dr. Rowan and did everything they told me to do, including a change in diet to wet food only and subcutaneous fluids. The cat is now more active than he was even 5 years ago. Annoyingly so. Like waking me up at 3 in the morning demanding his can of food. He's put on weight, jumping up on high surfaces, knocking over breakables, playing chase with the other cat, etc. His pancreatitis still flares up and causes some problems sometimes, but his kidneys have remained stabilized the last few check-ups. I'm realistic - I know he's in his twilight years and his longevity is limited - but I have the utmost gratitude to Rutherford for turning the situation around and helping me comfortably extend his life as much as possible. read more

After leaving Austin two years ago I hadn't found a vet I liked. I looked on Yelp and found Rutherford. I took my super anxious dog there on Friday and had a great experience. Sandy ended up peeing on the floor she was so nervous, but the staff was great with her. They were patient, understanding and accommodating. Dr. Young was able to calm her down and get everything done. She was friendly and explained everything to me. The building is clean and comfortable and the staff is definitely animal lovers. I have gone to some vets that don't seem to even like dogs, but that is not the case at Rutherford. They also have a great boarding program with a pool in the backyard for dogs. I have never been to a vet, groomer, or day care with nicer people. Everyone is exceptionally kind and patient. Dr. Rowan patiently answers my many questions and always calls to check on my dog Winston after he's had a vet visit. He's had a couple ear infections, eye infections and bad allergies this year alone. They also don't mind me calling with questions. I can leave a message and Dr. Rowan calls me back in a timely manner. He's only been to daycare once because it's a little out of my way when I needed to get to work, but when I picked him up, I think he actually had a smile on his face when we left. I didn't know they would be sending a text with his pic, so that was a pleasant suprise, but funny as all get out because he was being chased by another pup - it looked like a fun game of tag. It's not their fault for not telling me since I was running behind and in a rush when I dropped him off, plus I forgot that I had read about it on their website. The only reason it's not 5-start is because like some of the other yelpers say, the cost is rather steep. His meds are more than mine, and I'm self pay! On the other hand, Dr. Rowan has been understanding of my financial situation (currently laid-off) as has given me a few allowances. All-in-all, I can't wait to get back to work ) hopefully downtown, so that Winston can get to go to doggie daycare more often. read more

I took my dog here for Accupuncture. It is difficult to find a place that provides Accupuncture for dogs, let alone finding one and not having to pay an arm and a leg . I LOVED Dr Rowan . I was impressed with her knowledge and skills . Most of all I was impressed with the amount of time she spent with our girl. She never appeared rushed in any way. She provided both medical and homeopathic treatment information. When I left home and got a Yorkie, I decided that she deserved the best and took her to a gorgeous animal hospital in the Preston area. When she began to be droopy, the vet assured me that all she needed were vitamin shots. After two visits of this, the silent whisperings told me to go back to Fair Park and double check. Dr. Vaughn took one look at her and said she had Parvo and it was advanced. The tests confirmed. We tried to save her life, but couldn't. This was preventable!!!!! I don't know if the fancy man used expired vaccine, or it just didn't "take" for her, but he looked through her and didn't really SEE her. It's been about forty years now, and I feel my dogs in past years and the two I have now receive the finest care there is. Dr. Vaughn is extremely sharp, kind, straight forward and he price matches! - just bring a print out of med price you've found online. Your pet deserves the best you can provide - Dr. Vaughn is it. I'm 64 and I suspect he's in the same neighborhood, Use him while he's here. I trust that he would only hire and retain doctors of the same caliber - I suspect he does not suffer fools.
