Best grilled cheese ever! My team and I tried The Boss sandwich as part of the DFW Share Dare 2012, where Ruthie's was a stop/challenge along the way. I'm so glad they did, because now I've discovered another great food truck. Best grilled sandwiches in the world = not understated. I checked out Ruthie's Rolling Cafe here in Dallas today. They do grilled cheese. They've streamlined their menu greatly since the previous time I saw them in the wild. It looked like they only offered 5 varieties of sandwich (basic cheddar, ham and swiss, turkey and american, bbq and cheddar and patty melt). Everything was listed as being on sourdough. The bread was ok, but seemed almost like it was put directly on the grill without butter or oil. There was no buttery taste or texture in the grilled bread and only the slightest indication of any oil used in the grilling. The sharp cheddar was good, but the bbq seemed closer to store bought than I expected. I'd rather go to Lee's Grilled Cheese, but I doubt you'll ever find them at the same place at the same time. read more

I had the Classic. They tout this sandwich as the best grilled cheese in Texas. I'm not sure if it's quite THAT good (personally, I think Sundown has a way more fun and tastier grilled cheese) but it's not bad. The bread is nice and crispy on the outside, soft in the middle. The cheese is ok, it's just like regular sliced processed cheese. I wish that I could say more, but this wasn't a very complicated meal. :p The price was kind of steep for what it was, mine was $8.50 for a regular grilled cheese, a bottled drink, and chips. You're kind of paying for the "experience" I guess, since I was able to enjoy my lunch and the beautiful weather at Klyde Warren Park and not in a stuffy restaurant. read more

I wanted to give them 2.5 stars, but that wasn't an option. :( The sandwich I got today in the Arts District was pretty good. My major disappointment is that they say they are selling grilled cheese, but the ordering is set up for grilled meat and cheese sandwiches. The ordering sheet lets you choose 1 each bread, cheese, meat, and spread and there are 4 toppings to add. If you want an extra cheese or meat it is $2 more. I was disappointed that they would not let me forgo any meat and allow 2 cheeses for the same price ($7.50). I will go to Cafe Brazil for great grilled cheese in the future. There I will get 4 (four) cheeses (Asiago, Cheddar, Monterrey Jack and Feta) on my sandwich for less $$. read more

Yummy! Had this truck stop by our work and tried out the turkey trot with no slob sauce (mixture of ranch and bbq sauce). This was a great sandwich, grilled cheese just add turkey and bacon on some big texas toast. They serve it with kettle chips but the sandwich it's self is more than enough to fill u up. I enjoyed it. If I came across this truck again I'd grab another. read more

It is my very favorite food truck for events but the person they sent tonight made it just simply awful!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :-( I work for clients that use this food truck regularly and I've ALWAYS LOVED IT BUT = tonight they sent someone who had an obvious problem and a defective truck as well. The truck broke down in the driveway/alley and they had no power in the truck to properly serve the guest at our event. The guy had such a bad attitude from the start and when I asked him to make one of each for me (so I could compare as to refer to my other clients) he was upset and rude about it. Strike One. Strike two was that he was in a truck that broke down in the driveway and couldn't be restarted... which caused a big problem as the lights went off and no food could be served. Meanwhile the guy just plain had a bad attitude throughout it all. This food truck USUALLY ROCKS BUT.... the guy they sent tonight sucked big time. And yep = it was in Highland Park so you'd think they would have sent their best??? UPDATE: I did receive a call from their sales/marketing person today :-). She was very nice and concerned about my bad experience. It's very nice to know this company cares about their business and again = this is my very favorite food truck = what's there not to like about grilled cheese! I will refer them to my clients and hope they send someone with a "happy to do it" attitude next time. read more

I've had Ruthie's three more times and after those experiences, I'm updating my review to four stars. Each time my order has been correct and they now offer bags of chips, which I really like. Before, I could never eat the sandwich with the chips on the side at the same time because it was too much food for me. Swiss cheese with turkey and grilled onions on white seems to be the winner for me. I've also had it without turkey and it's still quite delicious. I only wish that if you skipped the meat, you could either get double cheese or it would cost less. But it is cheesey, buttery goodness on fabulous bread and I'm going to stop by whenever I can. read more

To make the statement of "Best grilled sandwich in Texas" is bold and inviting. I'm sad to report that the sandwich (The Classic) wasn't the best grilled sandwich in Texas. I can make a better one at home. Let's start by saying that it is a little overpriced but then again, it was the "best" I had to try it. It was cold. The cheese wasn't melted and it didn't taste like a grilled cheese normally tastes, buttery and cheese. The sandwich was dry and the cheese that was used wasn't the best quality it tasted very much like a store brand cheese nothing special about it. The bread, I think I was most excited about the bread, Texas Toast bread... what's not to like? Well it wasn't all that. The sandwich was underwhelming, forgettable, nothing special about it. I guess that next time I should try any of the other items on their menu. I'm not ready to write them off just yet. read more

Ruthies came to our event for work. I ordered the Roast beef Grilled Cheese with truffle. It was one of the better grilled cheese that i've got from them. They've really improved since I last ate with them. Their menu seems simplified as well. The thick buttered bread gave it an awesome texture and bite to it. The grilled cheese came with some lettuce or arugala. I couldn't tell i ate it really quickly. With that, i ordered cake balls. The cake balls were amazing and delicious. They offer vanilla and chocolate. The guy recommended the vanilla. So i got two vanilla and one chocolate. I should have known and got all chocolate because I really enjoy chocolate better. The chocolate cake balls was really moist on the inside and soaked. I could have ate several dozens of these; but restraint was needed. read more

I ordered my sandwich on sourdough with turkey, grilled onions, grilled tomatoes, and their slob sauce (kind of like a mixture of mayonnaise and BBQ sauce). This is a solid food truck. We have run across Ruthie's at a few neighborhood events or elementary school fairs. It is run by a good group of people that also donate a portion of the profits to the school/church event. By far, the best sandwich is The Boss. It is stuffed with brisket and perfectly complemented by the cheddar cheese and sourdough bread. It is fantastic and many peoples' "favorite" sandwich. The Plain Jane is just that -- cheese and bread. Some folks might like that, but there are so many other good options. I have ventured out to try the Turkey Trot (turkey; crispy bacon; cheese; sauce) and it is pretty good too. The sandwiches range in price from $6 to $8 and they are filling for sure. read more

I like grilled cheese, but I'm not going to go out of my way to get one. Ruthie's was at the food truck round-up earlier tonight, and my friends wanted to give it a try. I had to thank my friends immensely afterwards, as my taste buds were dancing with joy with every bite. I don't know exactly what I ate as I wasn't the one ordering--I think it was a turkey, ham, and bacon sammich--but it was delicious! There was plenty of meat on the sandwich with a generous amount of melted cheese, and the bread was toasted perfectly and not too greasy. The sauce for dipping totally hit the spot, and the homemade chips supplemented the sammich harmoniously. I would say Ruthie's is on par with The American in San Francisco. read more

The food at Ruthie's was okay. I find it hard to pay $8 for a patty melt. If it was made with buffalo, Kobe beef or some other exotic meat it might make since but I can make a beef patty melt that is just as good as Ruthie's, if not better, at my own house. My biggest concern was that the ground beef was not cooked throughly. It was not just undercooked (medium-rare) it was raw in the middle and this is a major health concern for children and elderly. Not normally a big problem except that they were serving food at an elementary school festival. read more

Simple grilled sandwiches, simple ingredients, simply delicious. Though there isn't a wide variety to choose from the small menu cuts to the chase with the basics and makes it easy to pick. Everything basically consists of some form of buttered bread and gooey melted cheese -- if you are that odd person who doesn't like the combination of the two then this isn't the place for you. Had the Extra Cheesy Classic. The bread was just right. Not too thick and not too thin. Grilled to perfection with a golden brown crust. The cheese was plentiful and melted just right. They came to the Castle Hills 4th of July festival along with 6 other trucks so I thought I would give it a shot. I love grilled cheese sandwiches and some of them sounded really good. Against my best judgment I picked the BBQ sandwich. In fairness to them it would be really tough to make good BBQ in a food truck. The chopped beef tasted like something premade and was pretty low quality. The bread was toasted well and the service was fast and friendly. I would be willing to try it again but next time in will get a turkey trot or grilled cheese. read more

We used Ruthies for our wedding in McKinney, TX. Everyone just raved about how amazing the food was and my guests really enjoyed the food truck experience. I worked with Robin starting in February and she was very patient with me and met with me to allow us to taste the menu and helped me with our options. We did the brisket grilled cheese, the italian, and the plain grilled cheese and we had mac-n-cheese cups with bacon upon request, of course lots of those who doesn't want bacon! I tried their boss sandwhich along with their mac and cheese (with bacon added on top), their mac and cheese was nothing to be spectacuarily exited for, if you get it I'd definately suggest adding toppings, almost require it actually. Their boss sandwhich though, it tasted like a sloppy joe that got his act together and is now ready to wine and dine you, that is to say, it tasted fantastic. Came upon this truck at the SMU spring game today and tried the Turkey Trot for $9 and it was so worth it. Whatever the sauce was on the sandwich was so good along with the melted cheese. The only down side was I would have loved some fries to compliment it but all they had were potato chips and they had no drinks at all.
