So this WAS a combo meal. Grilled chicken sausage, egg and cheese sandwich. To the right. Hot tomato soup with bits of tomato and onion.

Cloudy day. So where do I head? Straight to Ruthie's for a warm rich and thicc tomato soup with bits of tomato and onion. Only to be partnered with a grilled chicken sausage, egg and cheese sandwich. Imagine a golden crust. Don't forget the unlimited soda refills. $14. *Inconceivable*

Beautiful decor and a bright, lively atmosphere. I had a chai and it was pleasant. I'm sure I spoke with every server on duty because they were so friendly and checking on us and asking how we were doing. Love their mission to support a local school with all proceeds and how it aligns with the Unbound Library, a community library, which is the pop up event we attended there. We will be back to visit and dine again!

The BEST grilled sandwiches in South Dallas. And OMG! The tomatoes basil soup is dangerously delicious with just a small hint of something spicy. Hat's off to the chef, Zo!

    Front of Ruthie's Cafe

Ruthie's Cafe is one of those places that makes you feel good the moment you walk in. The atmosphere is welcoming and relaxed, and the staff are genuinely friendly. The food is excellent especially the grilled cheese sandwiches, which are easily some of the best in Dallas. Everything tastes fresh and well prepared, and the menu has great options for breakfast and lunch.

Where Comfort Meets Conscious Eating TL;DR: A cozy café serving up health-conscious breakfast sandwiches on their legendary bread--flavorful, satisfying, and surprisingly affordable. Healthy breakfast spots can be hit or miss. Too often, you're left with something that tastes like regret wrapped in whole wheat. But Ruthie's Café? They've cracked the code. Their chicken sausage, scrambled egg, and cheese sandwich--stacked on that famous bread from their food truck days--is proof that healthy can still mean deliciously melty. Of course, I had to revisit an old flame: the grilled cheese that first made me fall for Ruthie's back when they were slinging sandwiches at Klyde Warren Park. Spoiler alert: it's still as gooey and glorious as ever. The space itself? Minimalist, but in a welcoming way--high ceilings, big glass windows, and a "come hang out" kind of vibe. Whether you're settling into the laptop-friendly corner or hosting a group in the conference room, there's a spot that feels just right. The Unexpected Perk The prices. Somehow, they're just as reasonable--if not better--than when they were a food truck. I randomly wandered in while running errands and now have their brisket cheese sandwich bookmarked for my next visit. The Flipside The coffee? Let's just say it exists. Not terrible, but definitely not the star of the show. Think more "standard drip" than "carefully curated roast." Basically, it's the sidekick to the cheese sandwich, not the main act. Pro Tips * Skip the street parking stress--there's a lot in the back. * The patio is prime real estate for overcast days or when you want to feel fancy eating a cheese sandwich outdoors. * If you're planning a group gathering, the conference room seems reservable. * Breakfast is served all day! Don't let the TV screens showing lunch options fool you--grab a laminated menu at the counter for the real deal. * The coffee is molten when served. Give it a minute unless you enjoy burning your taste buds off. Final Thoughts Ruthie's Café nails the trifecta: solid food, fair prices, and thoughtful little details (like eco-friendly utensils). Whether you're here for the bread, the cheese, or just the easygoing vibe, it's the kind of place you'll want in your regular rotation. Because life's too short for bad bread--or forgettable cheese sandwiches.

    Sausage, egg and cheese sandwich

Zo, the chef, at Ruthie's made my sausage, egg and cheese sandwich to perfection. He came out and make sure of the type of cheese I wanted as well as wanting to see if my sausage was well done.

RUN! Do not walk to Ruthie's and order the Power Bowl! OMG! Chef Dre made the fluffiest eggs I've ever had! So good!

Please note that parking in this area is particularly difficult but if you come in the morning, it should be easier to find. Another thing worth nothing is that they are more of a quick standing coffee bar type of place and I definitely wouldn't recommend it for families or kids, so keep that in mind when visiting. Now to the food... They have a small but mighty menu for breakfast and lunch. For my first time I decided to try their The Monte Duro, which is a pastry style "hot pocket" with smoked prosciutto, mortadella, mustard and jam. For drink I decided to go with their Dirty Chai Latte. The drink was absolutely perfection and exactly what I needed in a warm Texas morning. The Monte Duro was cooked to perfection and packed with flavor! Both my friend and I ordered the same thing and we were both obsessed with it.

The staff is not really friendly but the vibes were still peaceful. Mushroom grilled cheese: This was so yummmy!! The bread comes perfectly crispy and buttery. There were tons of mushrooms and creamy flavor. By far one of the best grilled cheeses I ever had. Banana horchata matcha: This drink was very sweet and good for people that dont like bitter drinks. I loved the banana flavor and it reminded me of banana bread. There was also a lot of cinnamon in the drink which made it so tasty.

First of all, the Bishop Arts District itself is incredibly charming. Block after block of unique shops ranging from bookstores and bakeries to candle shops, candy stores, coffee spots, and little boutiques. It's exactly the kind of neighborhood I loveeeee exploring while traveling and if I lived in Dallas, I'd probably frequent this area often. As for The Wild Detectives, the concept alone immediately appealed to me...bookstore meets cafe meets bar meets restaurant. That combination will pretty much always grab my attention. I love to read, I love to eat. The space has a pretty relaxed, community oriented vibe, and during my Saturday morning/early afternoon visit, there were plenty of people working, reading, chatting, and hanging out both inside and on the patio. My one slight disappointment was that the bookstore side itself was smaller than I expected and didn't have quite as extensive a selection as I had imagined. That said, I still managed to leave with a few great additions for my ever growing TBR pile. Overall, this was a worthwhile stop and one I may revisit the next time I'm in Dallas.
