Ruthie's comes regularly to SMU pretty much every week without fail during the school year, so I've indulged my need for grilled cheese quite a lot in 2016. Their Turkey Trot is consistently amazing, and I was so sad when they stopped serving the seasonal tomato soup poppers last winter! On National Grilled Cheese Day in the spring they were handing out BOGO coupons for everyone who added them on Snapchat, which I thought was a nice perk. I wasn't too excited because the last time they were extremely late. It was due to an accident, and we were upset with the truck and the complex because there wasn't any communication. Today's my birthday, and I received an email that they were back at our location. The staff was extremely nice and answered any questions we had about the menu. I recommend them, I would just advise the company that if they are running late; communicating with the location would be great so that they can pass the information along. I had been meaning to try Ruthie's for many moons now, and I was finally successful at the Dallas Arts District Art in October free museum day. The first minor nuisance was that even though the facebook status said they would be ready by 11 am, they were turning people away at 11 am when I arrived, and asking us to come back at 11:30. There were about 5 other trucks with open windows at 11, so that was kind of a risky move to ask your hungry customers to hang tight! Anyway, when they were operational, I found the ordering and payment process pretty fluid. They take all credit cards and take your orders on a form, where you write in bread (white, sourdough, wheat, or jalapeno), meat (bacon, ham, turkey, etc), cheese (american, sharp cheddar, swiss, jack, etc), toppings (caramelized onions, uhh other stuff) and sauce (mustard, pesto, ranch, mayo, or their slop sauce). The best way I can describe their slop sauce is that it tastes like a mix between bbq, mayo and thousand island. In other words, it was really savory and creamy! I recommend this as the sauce! My ham, american cheese, caramelized onions, slop sauced sandwich on san francisco sourdough was good and came out relatively fast. The cheese was smooth, warm and melted on the bread and on the meat, the ham was salted nicely albeit a little tendony in places. The caramelized onions could do with some tweaking. They were large chunky slices of onion, slicing right through the cohesiveness of the sandwich, even the cheese glue that held it together couldn't contain these large chunks of onion. I think the onion could've been way thinner...would definitely help the sandwich stay together better. The bread however, was grilled expertly. That comforting bite of grilled cheese depends on that crunchy buttery, caramelly bread and the chefs did this well. I gave Ruthie's 3 stars mostly because I think it was a bit overpriced for being 1) a food truck and 2) a grilled cheese sandwich. Ruthie's is doing a brave thing by operating a truck that prepares customized orders, and maybe that contributes to the hefty $7.50 per sandwich. However, the price kind of takes away from the comfort factor you associate with a good ole grilled cheese. (If you want any extra meat, cheese, or toppings, that'll cost you about $2 more). Another reason why Ruthie's didn't get more love from me is because they still don't have a website!! When you rely on social media to communicate with your patrons, I think you really gotta have a functioning website. The COMING SOON! homepage at http://www.ruthiesrollingcafe.com has not changed in months. Also, their facebook fan page doesn't say much either about their offerings, or feature their food items. They do a good job updating their wherabouts but having a website will really help patrons know what's up with them. read more

I ordered Italian hippy grilled cheese sandwich which was good it just needed a lil something extra?! Not quite sure....but maybe a spicy Mayo sauce or something. My partner in crime thoroughly enjoyed their Italian Hippy. I tried a bite, and it was overflowing with cheese, chicken, pesto, and tomato. One I would definitely recommended and get again. The Extra Cheesy which I had while delicious, didn't feel overflowing, and for a $0.50 difference, was a little underwhelming. The Pepper Jack got lost in the other cheeses as well. We hired Ruthie's to cater our daughter and new son in law's "second day" wedding reception. They had a very small wedding on Saturday and then a big reception on Sunday for friends. It was a total HIT! We picked five different sandwiches that the 60 plus guests could choose from. Every guest commented how good the sandwiches were! I suggested that each couple get two different sandwiches and then switch a half, that way they could try two different sandwiches. Most people were not able to eat the whole sandwich, so a lot were wrapped up and taken home. The sandwiches are THAT BIG! The sandwiches came w/ chips and a drink. The team of three women were so much fun! Besides being fun, they were kind, courteous, polite, helpful and everything else that you want! It was a warm day and they even had a pop up tent so when people ordered, they were out of the sun! Not only was the staff great, but Robin Skinner, the Director of Catering, was terrific and answered so many of my questions and concerns. It was a terrific food truck and if you need a fun experience, go with Ruthie's. Our neighbors are still talking about it! read more

We were lucky enough to be invited to a birthday party that Ruthies was catering last night. This is without a DOUBT the BEST food truck I have had in Dallas. Dee was on the grill and I don't think there is another person in the city who is patient enough to achieve such a perfectly melted grilled cheese! Dee is a warm person and did everything to make sure we had enough to eat! We will definitely be following Ruthies and Dee! Cubano was delicious, but the Plain Jane grilled cheese and tomato soup was the classic combo it should be!! The soup wasn't overly creamy so it didn't feel heavy, plus it had a slight hint of after-heat that was great for a chilly evening. It's food truck Fridays at Trinity Falls where we live, and Ruthie's showed up with their sandwiches. We ordered the El Cubano (for me) and the Turkey Trot (for my wife) both of which were absolutely magnificent. In mine, there was the pulled pork, ham, Swiss cheese and pickles on a nice sourdough Texas style toast. The meat was tender, very flavorful and a very respectable version of the classic sandwich. Texas sized as well. My wife loved her Turkey Trot (dry because she's not a sauce person). Even without the slob sauce she loved how flavorful the bacon, turkey and cheddar was together on that toasted sourdough. Praiseworthy sammies to be sure! A word about the truck: the staff were quick, friendly and groovin' to Earth Wind and Fire while they whipped up our tasty morsels. Everything looked clean and tidy, and it was obvious that they enjoyed being here to serve up their goodies tonight. If you see them on the street, roll on up - you won't be disappointed! read more

Growing up on grilled cheese this place is heaven. I never knew grilled cheese could have so much flavor and options but Ruthies does the job very well. Almost any idiot can make a grilled cheese sandwich, so I was skeptical to think that there really needed to be a truck entirely devoted to this comfort classic. I was wrong. In fact, I would venture to say that I have been more impressed Ruthie's than any other food truck in Dallas. They are simply doing things right, quality ingredients, convenience, affordable, fresh food. The cheese always comes out perfectly melted, the breads are always toasted just enough, the other topping (bacon, onion, etc) are not overly complicated but a perfect compliment and flavor enhancement to the cheese, which is really all you want in a grilled CHEESE sandwich. The novelty of the Dallas food truck is beginning to wear off...finally. It's about time for food truck to start standing on their own two feet and producing a product that rivals or surpasses their brick and mortar counterparts. Otherwise, the whole truck business is a complete waste of time. I adore their concept and graphics, but most of all their fun way of ordering off a sheet of paper with all their yummy options. My favorite being the hippie whole grain bread. It was delish and packed with nuts and grains. I always assumed it was just grilled cheeses, but no - they have a plethora of meats to grill into a gooey euphoric medley of cheese, meats, and your choice grilled onions, jalapenos, and more! Considering my love for Swiss cheese, I settled for the turkey and Swiss grilled cheese with jalapenons. I hummed at every bite I took. Sugar Bear is a BIG fan of grilled cheese sandwiches. He's known to get them for breakfast when we dine at Cafe Brazil. He has also concocted some mad grilled cheese experiments of his own in our kitchen...not fun to clean up after...believe me! When I saw Ruthie's Rolling Cafe with the 'build your own grilled cheese' option, I knew it would be Sugar Bear's dream sandwich! I ordered the sour dough bread with pepper jack cheese. Bacon (of course!) was the meat, dijon mustard and pickles finished it off. The sour dough was home made and incredible. The cheese was ooey gooey delight! He was dazzled at the crunchy perfection of the bacon...it was crispy but not charred to death. He really was impressed, and I loved it on my several bites as well. YUM! The service here is outstanding! The cook forgot to put the dijon on the sandwich and so he chased me down to my car to give me a side of the mustard with a big apology! Wow! I was very impressed! I hope Ruthies continues to make the journey north to Addison or Carrollton more often! Delish! read more

So, take this review with less than a grain of salt, more like a fraction of a grain of salt, a tithing of a grain of salt.... Walked up to the Ruthies' Food Truck during the Greenville's St. Patrick's Day Parade, and yes I did expect higher prices and less of a selection. That's a given. Ruthies was only selling breakfast tacos, none of their grilled cheese. Egg and cheese tacos were $3.50 each and Bacon, egg and cheese were $4.50 each. The bacon tacos took longer to make, so you put in your order and wait to the side to get it. We did this, we waited and told other people lining up behind us to go ahead and order because we were just waiting for our food. We still waited and watch the two customers behind us get bacon, egg and cheese tacos, receive their order and walk away. The two guys at the front gave our orders away and admitted they forgot about us. They could see us the whole time! Not cool. They offered free chips but that was not enough for the half hour we wasting waiting for overprices breakfast tacos. Ruthies may be awesome but not during special events. read more

All I have to say is: BBQ Brisket Grilled Cheese. I've driven from the north dallas burbs to their location next to the museum of art in uptown, just for this brisket grilled cheese a few times now. I've eaten great BBQ all over the country, and this is for sure in the top 5 for me (excellent sauce, tender flavorful meat, Cheese, butter, great bread). I haven't been overly impressed with Dallas BBQ (b/c I haven't been here that long) so I don't want to say it's "the best" b/c I haven't eaten at a bunch of specifically dallas places, but i've tried BBQ from TX to SC and everywhere in between and this is among my favorites. I have no idea about any of their other menu items, because after the long drive to get to them, all I want is their BBQ brisket grilled cheese. SO GOOD. read more

I've tried a lot of food trucks in the Dallas area and Ruthie's has to be one of my least favorites. While they have a cute truck and an efficient ordering system, there was still over a 20 minute wait for a grilled cheese. I wouldn't mind the wait time if the product was worth it, however I think my niece or nephew could do better. I ordered the grilled cheese with ham on sourdough with caramelized onions and their special sauce. First off there was no sauce on my sandwich. Secondly my cheese wasn't melted. Actually the sandwich was barely warm. Part of what is appealing and comforting about a grilled cheese is the melted gooey warm cheese goodness. This sandwich had none of that. After the long wait I got a ham and cheese that I could have picked up anywhere. The caramelized onions were lukewarm chunks of limp sauteed onions that actually detracted from the taste.. The sandwich components did not work and it was poorly made. With so many good choices on the food truck scene I would recommend you choose another food truck and make your own grilled cheese. You will enjoy it much more and avoid the wait. read more
