The food is truly very good. Definitely not the typical fare you'll find in every other Manitowoc bar. Unique and tasty dishes that will appeal only to those who value quality over quantity. Outstanding value. However, it is a bar, which means you'll likely have your meal at the bar (since there are very few tables and there can be many people milling about trying to grab one). Expect a very long wait for your food, so come prepared to sit and enjoy your drink(s). I think they have a small kitchen. My friends and I were on a motorcycle ride and found ourselves in Manitowoc after some unplanned bike repair on our ride. Starting to get hungry because these repairs were going well passed away lunchtime, we had to give up our previous lunch plans and find something in town. I came to yelp and called the first 2 burger joints (NOT fastfood because I can't eat sh*t). They were unfortunately closed due to the bullsh*t. Ryan's was open and had very good reviews. We all rode there and were pretty well blown away on how good the burgers were!! It seems they were short on help (understandable due to the virus crap) but the people that were working, were simply excellent. Food was great! Service was awesome too. Excellent food. We had been here once for carryover last year when COVID started and came back and were glad we did. The Meat Meltaways were delicious and did melt in your mouth. I had the Barbecue with Ranch. It was a perfect amount as an entree on my diet. My daughter had the spicy chicken bowl and loved the flavors. It could have been a bit more spicy for her high spicy tolerance (she says it was medium for her taste) but the perfect amount of spices. Can't rate the food or drinks, because the service was literally non existent. 4 bartenders (or people behind the bar) two kept their backs to the patrons all the time (too busy counting money...or stealing...) one fixing her own drink. I gotta hand it to Yelp Advertising. Had it not been for that, I might have missed Ryan's on York. And let me tell you this: that would've been bad. Driving up I-43, I had a hankering for a good hamburger. I mean, all hamburgers are pretty good, but I wanted one that was GOOD good. Ya know what I mean? So I pulled out the trusty Yelp app and searched Manitowoc for burger joints. I quickly discarded Wendy's, Denny's, McDonald's, or any other intergalactic chain restaurant. I was looking local and Ryan's on York fit the bill perfectly. Ryan's on York is a little out of the way. On York Street (imagine that!) in downtown Manitowoc, but it's worth the drive. They make great burgers served on fresh, local bakery buns. But before we get to the burgers, let's talk about the fries. They don't just have fries, they have a whole FRENCH FRY MENU! For real!! The menu lists a whole bunch of tasty ways to eat America's favorite side dish. There's garlic Parmesan, Cajun, Greek, jerk, Masala, Hawaiian, and plain ol' ordinary fries. I was in french fry heaven! My wife and I went with the Hawaiian. House fries garnished with Ham, BBQ Sauce, Parmesan cheese, homemade cucumber pineapple Pico De Gallo, they may have been a little odd, but Ryan's gets a solid 'A' for effort. We enjoyed them though we'd likely try something else next time. Burger-wise, I went traditional with the House Burger: a 1/4-lb smash burger with cheddar, lettuce, tomatoes, onions, pickle and house dressing, while my wife went unconventional with the Bangkok Burger: 1/4-lb smash burger topped with fine-shred cabbage, pickled carrots, onions, peanut sauce, sweet chili and swabi sauce on a roll. I thought the latter seemed a little over-adventurous, but it was really quite delicious and warrants ordering the next time I pass through. I bet the varieties -- Blue Bayou, Cordon Burger, House Melt, etc. -- are excellent too because the burger within was well-seasoned (perhaps a tad salty) and EVERYTHING tastes better on a fresh, locally baked roll. Otherwise, Ryan's on York is a quaint Wisconsin tavern that's clean with respectable clientele (at least during our visit -- this is Manitowoc you know! [I kid, I kid. Manitowoc's a very nice Wisconsin town.]) and good service. They also have a fine craft beer collection along with a decent selection of local crafts. That's good, because eating a juicy burger without a good beer is like eating a warm chocolate chip cookie and washing it down with a warm Red bull. Not good. (IMO, though I'm sure some of you would love that.) So well done, Ryan's on York. Thanks for the advertisement that allowed me to discover your little patty of paradise. In town visiting for the week and was intrigued by the menu. Was going to visit with my handicapped brother but there is no accessible ramp. Discouraged but visited a few days later with another family member. We ordered the pork Bahn Mi sandwich, the forbidden rice naan and Fried Green tomatoes. We shared our orders an every bite was memorable. Very impressed! The waitress was knowledgeable about the food and beers/cocktails. We spent the last year traveling up the coast from Marathon Key, FL to NYC. Then up the Hudson River, Erie Canal and on through the Great Lakes. We've eaten in a lot of restaurants; dive bars, mom n pop, theme, ethnic, and the corporate units. Through that we've seen restaurants plaster their walls with antiques or a collection of oddities. They feel that's their license to call themselves "eclectic". Ryans on York has obviously thought long and hard about their food and the people that work there. The chef has assembled a group of both well executed ethnic foods and a group of creative fusion entrees. All of these are served by a patient and well informed staff. I say patient because it's a small place and they really work with you to get you a seat(s) and serve you a meal. (Reciprocity here is appreciated). The Sake Crunch bowl has both the cool plate presentation to look appealing, then the mix of crunchy and buttery textures to tease your mouth, while offering a truly delightful palate of flavors. We also enjoyed the best Bonh Mi sandwich on this side of the ocean. The next visit, was at the end of a long day. We only needed a House Burger and Korean Tacos. They did not disappoint. First off, service was great. Our bartender/ waitress was great. The food was good and bad. Our fries were burnt. The cook told us that the this was a darker oil and that if they cooked less they would be soggy. Picture shows, these were burnt. If the oils was darker, it's old, change out. Would have been 4 stars if the fries were better. They comped is one order of them so that great! They were willing to remake as well but we didn't want to wait. Was in search of a quick bite before catching the SS Badger car ferry. Not many places still open and serving food past 10 pm on a week night in Manty, but saw Ryan's on York pop up on the Yelp app so headed there on foot. And let me tell ya - the food and extensive beer list did not disappoint! Even though they were packed at the bar, we managed to snag the last table. Ordered the San Fran noodles w/ shrimp and they were reasonably priced and seasoned just right. Delicious! Boyfriend ordered a burger and devoured it. Said it was very tasty! Read carefully as rating is a bit odd. The food here is a solid 4-5 stars. Really inventive menu, nice presentation. Burgers are all overcooked but they still have fantastic flavor. The bad? This is the slowest service restaurant I've ever seen of this type. Good Lord. When you walk in, count how many people haven't been served yet and then add yourself to the end of that list. If the number is 10 or more, you'll be there over an hour easy. Because they make one. Thing. At. A. Time. Just a horrible set up. And today was no anomaly, but it was probably the last straw for me visiting here Came in a little after 12:15 and no tables available. Two tables appeared to be done so we waited maybe 15 minutes. No big deal. The tables opened up simultaneously and we took one and a couple that just came in took the other. Exact same time. We were ready to order as I advised our party of four that the service was slow. Asked the waitress if we could order right away and she returned Ina few minutes and took our order. So far so good. That was at 12:40 ish. At 1:30 the table of two received their food, ordered after us and we were told "yours is being made now. You both got here at the same time". Er, no. We were there waiting to be seated for 15 minutes Einstein. At 1:50 our food came. 1hr and 10 minutes for four sandwiches? Never again. read more

My first experience with this restaurant was a solo exploration. I liked it so much, I had to share it with my wife. It was moderately busy when we walked in. Sitting at the bar is where it's at. Our waitress/bartender was upbeat and friendly. I ordered a veggie burger and my wife ordered a shrimp po-boy. Of course, we had to order some of those great parmesan fries. Service broke down a bit as our waitress had a lot of friends to talk to. Our order came in good time and the food was satisfying. But after we got our food, we were completely off our waitress' radar. My burger wasn't quite what I ordered; but it was very good, so no complaints. My wife, a southern girl, said her sandwich was up to Gulf Coast standards. The fries tasted good; but they weren't as hot as could be; and a bit greasy. One thing that usually irritates diners is a long wait for the check when the meal is over. After 15 minutes we had to snag our waitress, as she zipped by, to get our bill. So, as others have observed the service can be slow, albeit friendly. Whatever comes out of that kitchen is really good, hence my four star rating. Whatever failings there might be with ambiance and service are more than counter balanced by the quality of the food. Find this little hole-in-wall and enjoy something really good to eat. read more

A jewel in Manitowoc. When we came to Wisconsin on vacation I thought I would pretty much just have fried cheese and brats as options, but Ryan's really surprised me. Their upscale bar food was cooked to perfection. They do have fried options like fried green tomatoes and frickles (fried pickles). The prices are more than fair.
