We stopped by Rye Harbor Lobster Pound after a trip to the nearby Seacoast Science Center. The woman behind the counter noticed my 6-year old daughter had a stuffed toy starfish, told her the Seacoast Science Center was one of her favorite places, and then actually pulled out a live lobster to show her. I wanted fluffy chowder and I got my fluffy chowder. What's fluffy chowder, you may ask? It is what Rye Harbor Lobster Pound calls their clam chowder topped off with a scoop of their butter-sherry lobster meat, which is the same mix that they use to fill their lobster rolls. Rye Harbor was participating in the annual Hampton Beach Seafood Festival as a food vendor located in one of the two food tents. I picked the shortest line for a relatively late lunch, and was soon at the front. Fluffy chowder $8 ($5 without the fluff) Lobster Quesadilla with a dipping sauce of lobster bisque $10 My styrofoam bowl was short and stout, and not particularly well filled, even with the fluff topping, which was sad portionwise, but convenient for holding a bowl when you are standing around eating it without a table. Tasted good though. The Lobster filling in my quesadilla was unevenly placed, so the first half had lots more meat than the second. Also tasted good though. 3.5 stars. read more

The best lobster rolls I've ever had. I had the hot lobster roll, which is closer to Connecticut than Maine, and is doused in a butter/sherry sauce. It was getting to be labor day and we realized we hadn't had any lobster so decided to give this a try and also get some Hampton and Salisbury Beach and ocean at the same time. I had the hot lobster roll and my wife had the lobster mac&cheese and they were both good. My lobster roll was way overstuffed and there was plenty of lobster in with the mac&cheese. One slight drawback is that you either need to park in the "dock parking lot" for I think $5 for the day or they have some free 30 minute parking out front but that probably only works if you were picking up, eating there took maybe 45minutes or more. Sylvia catered our beautiful New Hampshire wedding. The food was AMAZING. Working with her was such a special experience and a delight. She helped us to develop the perfect menu, she knew exactly the right amount of everything to recommend, and she even came personally to help set everything up. We had montauk salad, lobster bisque, and mussels in white wine garlic sauce (YUM). Then we supplemented with some of her non-seafood items: salad, mini turkey stuffing sandwiches, mozzarella basil balsamic mini sandwiches, and mac and cheese. Everything was incredible and all of our guests were so happy.  I'll admit, when we first started planning I almost didn't call her because I was so sure having lobster would be completely out of our price range, but she worked with us to make a menu that was perfect, and not just reasonable, but actually less than what other (honestly, less special) caterers quoted us. It was a dream come true.  Eating Sylvia's food from Rye Harbor Lobster Pound, and now also the Hungry Lobster, is truly a family tradition for us. "It was the best of times. It was the worst of times." Charles Dickens must have been to the Rye Lobster Pound. This place is not for everyone so be forewarned. They serve this little cup of what they call "fluff" for $7 or $8. (Not really sure- I waited in the car). I guess they can make up whatever name they want for it, because it's not like anything you've had before, but I will attempt to describe it anyway. So, you know how when you go the AYCE seafood buffet and you wrestle your way to the crab station and grab a heaping plateful, then you take it back to your table and pick out all the meat and jam it into the bowl of melted butter (or whatever that yellow grease actually is) and then just take a fork and sit back suck in all that briny, oily goodness? If you don't, then you've been doing it all wrong and you're welcome. If so, then imagine this: Instead of crab it's lobster chunks, and in the bottom of the bowl is a layer of extra thick and sturdy clam chowder which will serve as a support system over which you pour that unctuous mixture, adding an extra shot of grease just for good measure. Now, if this is causing you to drool and you're already calling in sick so you can can take an emergency road trip to New Hampshire, you and I can be friends. If, on the other hand, you are recoiling at the thought, Rosebud felt the same and gets agitated just thinking about it. Good ammo for when I feel like torturing her. read more

The chowder is excellent! The lobster rolls - sorry to say - underwhelming for the price. We went many times this summer to support local business...when you're paying $25 for a lobster roll in an average hot dog bun the pile of lobster should say it all! Sadly when the young summer staff was there it was nothing more than a tiny spoonful of lobster, sometimes with several shells in it. However, when the owner is there you definitely get a real serving. That being said- folks we've brought have remarked at the lack of seating, unappealing swarms of flies, and price of the food for what you get. My friend Karen and I went for fluffy chowder today! We entered the clam shack into a hustle of activity inside. The girls were friendly and fun and very helpful with our experience. We each ordered a large clam chowder 8 each and a scoop of yummy lobster on top $3 additional. Extra crackers. And an order of the freshest shrimp cocktail with a spicy sauce with the right Amy of heat. We brought our overflowing chowders outside and enjoyed them at the patio area in the fresh sea air. We swung by here a couple of times when we were staying in the Portsmouth area, and I gotta say - I would never have pegged New Hampshire as a place you could get a great lobster roll, but they do a great job here. The spot itself is innocuous; there is free 30-minute parking outside of it, and I would assume in a normal summertime, the parking lot and the other shacks renting out equipment would be open; alas, in these not-so-normal days, they were basically the only place open. Placing an order is fairly easy, as the menu isn't terribly large, but keeping it simple makes it easy to order, and the food does come out pretty quickly. While the cold lobster roll is fairly standard, the warm roll, with the unique butter-sherry sauce that gives it a bit of a tart, buttery flavor is excellent. Both iterations are also extremely generous on the lobster portion, so one roll will definitely fill you up. If that's not enough, you do get a bag of Lay's as well to snack on. We did try the soups; definitely go with the 'fluffy' chowder, which is basically regular-way New England clam chowder, with aforementioned butter-sherry sauce drizzled in along with several chunks of lobster meat - it's the first lobster-clam chowder I had, and it is definitely worth a repeat try. The lobster bisque, unfortunately, was hard to finish; while the flavor is good, and the lobster meat plentiful, there is so much cream in it that it's a bit suffocating; we didn't bother finishing the soup after all the meat was gone. For a small snack that is refreshing, I'd recommend the steamers - it takes a little longer to come out (given the temperature, they steam them as ordered), but after you peel 'em and dunk 'em in clarified butter, it's a nice, chewy bite of briny richness. While this is a little off the beaten path relative to where Portsmouth is (the area we were at basically had no cell reception), if you are looking for a lobster roll to try on New Hampshire's short coastline, I would highly recommend making a detour out here and getting a meal. read more

If you are looking for good seafood then this is the place for you. The lobster are actual chunks of lobster and not the imitation ones some places sell. My boyfriend and I read all the amazing reviews and got on the road from Boston to head to Rye Harbor Lobster Pound. It's a small little shack like described, overlooking the water. We were very excited to order and sit and watch the boats. I'm sorry to say but this was one of the worst lobster rolls we've EVER had!! Both rolls lacked an abundance of lobster, in fact, they had more roll than lobster. The worst part is they were filled with small little chopped up pieces of ALL claw and NO tail! I don't know if we caught them on an off day (A Saturday?) but our rolls looked nothing like the other pictures from past patrons and for $25 a roll, we walked away feeling extremely disappointed. This little shack of a place is POPPIN! We were there at 10am on a Sunday and expected to be the only ones there (who else eats lobster rolls for breakfast?!), but between 10am and 10:30 am we saw at least 6 parties come in and out. Lobster sandwiches were delicious and very generous on the lobster meat, though to be honest I think it is comparable to places in Boston like Luke's Lobster or Pauli's. (Like, how wrong can you go with giant chunks of lobster meat between bread?) Fluffy clam chowder was also great, but I think it is better in theory than IRL. The chunks of lobster were amazing, but the clam chowder itself was not as tasty as say Robert's in Kittery, Maine (less than 30 min away, give or take).
