Another awesome spot for food in the strip district! This is a place to get both Polish classic hot foods as well as other imported items like candy, drinks, teas, meat, and so much more. I got to try their cheddar potato pierogies as well as a chocolate wafer, apricot drink, and kvas from the store part. The pierogies were great. Warm and fluffy on the inside. Filled to the brim with potato and cheese. A bit oily, though. Good amount of onion on top without being overwhelming, and a solid price for the portion. Definitely delicious. And, all the items from the store were great too. The wafer was pretty basic for the price, but still good. Great apricot drink, super refreshing. And the kvas...I missed this a lot. I'm thrilled that we stumbled upon here one day and discovered the joys of really authentic Polish food in the strip district. The person behind the counter looked like a granddaughter of the woman who was running the kitchen in the back. They must have been here for generations. I liked the different style of pierogies such as spinach and feta, which was really mostly spinach and no potato inside. There are a lot of shelfstable products such as candies and canned foods that you can purchase to take home as well. It's not really set up for a dine-in experience, but there's a tiny counter where you can stand or pull up a stool. So if you're looking for a sit down restaurant, this is not the place. I knew I wanted to try some pierogi's while in Pittsburgh, and found S&D through Yelp. My husband and I stopped in for a snacky meal and got some potato and cheddar pierogis and kielbasa and sauerkraut to share. They have the hot foods available in a case that keeps it warm. They also have a few things in the cold case that you can ask them to heat up. They have a few small seats available where you can eat your food. Overall, the food was good! I kind of wish the pierogi's had a sauce, but I saw upon leaving that you can ask for sour cream by request. So good! I walked in and the familiar smells and packages made me feel all warm inside. There were cookies and candies that I remembered from my youth, treats from my Oma and my Tantes that are both delicious and nostalgic. I like that they have small batches of the candies bagged up, so I was able to get a small amount of a variety of things instead of having to choose one or two items. The kielbasa and sauerkraut on a roll was DELICIOUS. They put the sauerkraut on the bottom and on top of the kielbasa and it was wrapped in foil so it gave the kraut juice time to soak in and it steamed the bread and it was perfection. The pierogies and the buttered noodles with cabbage, bacon, and farmers cheese were also delicious. The meal and the treats that followed made me feel like I had communed with my ancestors. Glad we made it to this famous Polish deli. The pierogies and polish sausage are so delicious. We didn't eat the pierogies at the shop, since they have have several tables outside of the shop, instead pan fried after got home and tasted even better. We bought the traditional potato and cheese pierogies, vegetarian mushroom pierogies, regular sausage, nuts cookies , various chocolate, baking extract, and other miscellaneous items. Everything was delicious & only wish we bought more . The shop is small, long and narrow, not much space to maneuver around especially when other customers also in the shop. Given its popularity, this shop is always busy, but cashier is very efficient at check out so the line moves fast. S&D located in the strip district, is a high walking score area with lots to see and convenient paid parking lots nearby, we paid $10 flat daily rate. Even though Pittsburgh is known for pirogies, it is hard to find them or hard to find good ones. One place that does sell great pirogies is S&D Polish Deli. This is a market with a they have a place where they have their pirogies and other Polish fare. The Haluski was awesome but the cheese and bacon added great flavor. I will say this...make sure to come early since the pirogies go fast and there are limited flavors and qualities. read more

I searched for an authentic Polish deli while visiting the area and based on many reviews decided to give S&D a try. This is a deli so you'll need to order online or go in person - there is no seating. This business is located in a cool area and easy to find. We tried the Borsht, potato pancakes, Perogi and Keilbasi. Plus I loved Kolaczki's growing up so I needed to try these. They had the apricot filled and nut I wanted to try the nut filled as they looked delish and I had never tried or made those. One container is $15.00 and about 12 or so cookies. Well worth it! We all loved the food we tried. And just know the Kielbasi is legit - totally different than store package types. This is alone is worth the trip. Decided to finally visit the Polish Deli during a strip Sunday and sample some "snacks." I'm not sure if it was just because it's Sunday or if it's like this every day, but the hot foods were sitting in a grab & go case. Nothing wrong with that I was just expecting made-to-order. I'm sure it was freshly made that morning. We split the potato and cheese pierogies (comes with 4) and some Haluski. Both were delicious, though very buttery. I could have done without the bacon on the Haluski but it was tasty. I'm sure they have a version that's just cabbage but the prepared food was pretty picked over. They also have a great selection of polish seasonings, sweets, fresh sausages, and many more polish goods. read more

There were not many options at the time we arrived, but we were able to buy a kielbasa (sausage) sandwich, haluszki (essentially butter noodles) with bacon, and pierogi (boiled potato dumplings). The food was phenomenal and fresh. The pierogis dough was melt in your mouth. I ordered the sauerkraut and mushroom which was delicious. The lady at the counter was super helpful and the woman along the food was also helpful in finding the different items in the coolers and cases. For several years, I have been a customer of S&D Polish Deli off and on. S&D is a small grocery store that sells Polish pierogies, meats, soups, canned goods, desserts, candies, gifts/souvenirs, etcetera. Since my last visit, I think that some of the products have changed. I used to love S&D's pierogies, haluszki, and borsch, and now I think that they taste good and not great. Their kolaczki cookies tasted very good but were a little burnt. The employee who rang up my purchase was friendly. The checkout was fast and accurate. Prices were reasonable. Yes!!!!!!! S&D Polish deli delivered! Not literally. Coming from Texas but raised with a family who was from Ohio, pierogis were a staple in my household. My sister and I flew through Pitts and I found the awesome Deli/market online. We were able to walk from our hotel (Westin). My only regret is we didn't find the place on our 1st day because I would have came back every day and tried a different dish. The potato egg and cheese pierogi were everything my stomach desired. I wish I could have tried the noodles and cabbage and I should have just bought it to try a bit out of it. They had different types of kielbasa which they friendly ladies let me sample at the counter. I ended up having the wedding and Black Forest kielbasa vacuum sealed for my trip back to Texas. In Pittsburgh? You better try some pierogis while you're here. S&D was one of the few places to pop up on my radar with "hot and ready" options - several places have them available premade for pickup to cook and enjoy at home, and they also have those here, but I wanted to try them on site. The potato and cheese pierogis were perfect, swimming in butter and onions like they should be. Note that the hot pierogis are in a warming case by the register and frozen/cold bags of pierogis are in the refrigerator cases in the back - a handful of classic flavors available, but I stuck to the classic. 4 piece order was $5, ate them at the sidewalk table outside, and they really hit the spot. Overall, the shop itself is cozy with the aroma of homemade Polish food. Pretty decent variety of frozen foods, candies/desserts, and cooking supplies. Staff were friendly, lunch specials available. They are open daily but close fairly early around 4PM so plan ahead. read more

My first time here as I'm visiting - we came to try the food, but unfortunately, the "restaurant" is not operating. You can't order platters or anything freshly made - they have a grab n' go warmer where you can buy their pre-cooked food. There is no menu to read, just the prices written on the food warmer which were poorly legible. There is no where to sit and eat besides some tables outside, but it was snowing, wet, and windy. The pierogies here were great though! They were hot despite being in the warmer since the morning and they had melted butter over them. They unfortunately only had 2 of the many fillings they normally offer, which were potato and cheddar cheese, and sauerkraut. Both were delicious, but wish we could have tried some other flavors. We also got a kielbasa sandwich from the warmer, but the bread was pretty tough and the whole sandwich was super dry. They sold a box of cookies w/ apricot jam which were great! Then another with fried pieces of dough that I found kinda dry and didn't love. Overall, would come back for their pierogies but only to go! Hopefully would be here on a warm day. read more

This is more of a Polish market retail shop than a sit-down restaurant. There are 3 tables with folding chairs outside the shop but all were taken when I visited. The staff was kind enough to let me eat my pierogi standing up near the back. They had a few varieties of cooked pierorogies in a hot box that you can select from. All were in to go container. Since you can't go to Pittsburgh without eating pierogis, we ended up here. It did not disappoint. We couldn't decide between the potato and cheese, potato and spinach, and spinach so we ordered all three. They were all delicious, but our favorite was the potato and cheese. We didn't really need the haluski but, when in Rome etc. Plus, who couldn't use a few more carbs in their life, especially when they taste this good. There are 2 seats inside, which we were lucky to get. There are also tables outside. Inside or out, I can highly recommend this place for an authentic Pittsburgh experience. read more

Unfortunately, Covid has affected this restaurant in a negative way. I was really looking forward to lunch here but experience just isn't the same at all. The food wasn't as good, either. All the picnic tables at the back of the restaurant are gone and the restrooms are closed. You order at the front cash register and then you get your food in Styrofoam containers in a to go bag. If you want to sit at one of the little plastic tables outside on the sidewalk and eat it, you can. We did this and it was windy and the napkins were all over the place and it was just a mess. Not fun at all. Maybe it was just our imaginations, but the food wasn't as good, either. We ordered stuffed cabbage and could hardly find anything but rice in it. All in all, it was a disappointing experience that I cannot recommend. read more

I didn't have a specific spot picked out, so while walking through the Strip District we decided to check out S&D Polish Deli. This spot is a small grocery offering up Polish meats, sausages, and tons of Polish imported products. It was really cool to look around at everything! The shop also has a kitchen, where you can order items like pierogies, borscht, stuffed cabbage, sausages, and more. They also offer bakery items. I opted for the pierogies, filled with potato and cheese. I was really excited for the experience, but unfortunately, they weren't great. I think they would have been much better if they were hot and fresh, but they seemed like they had been sitting around a while. They were room temperature (at best) and very densely solidified. Not very tasty. There are lots of other great spots to grab food in the Strip District, so based on my experience, I doubt I'll be returning to S&D. read more

Ok this is a 4.5 for me mainly because they didnt have quite the selection of prepared hot foods that I wanted. I was hoping for the stew and while the kielbasa with sauerkraut smelled good, I didnt want that today. And I like my Haluska slightly better. So just under 5. But, I really enjoyed this little place stuffed to the gills with all kinds of polish products. I could have easily spent an hour just studying the canned goods. We ended up with a quart of haluska and a dozen sauerkraut mushroom pierogies. I was surprised the pierogies were not sour and I could really taste the mushroom. It came in it's own butter sauce so we just popped it in the frying pan. Now I make pierogies for when I am not in the burg. And I was in awe with how much filling there was in that little pierogies. I cant do that and still close the pierogies. The fresh selections were a little low, later in the week is probably better than a monday. Lots of frozen pierogies and I was amused to see that they even did what I did, put chocolate in one of them. The small bakery section had plenty to choose from. Those apricot things and the poppyseed roll were most tempting. As was the meat case filled with sausages. Friendly efficient service. My husband and I were visiting Pittsburgh this month and went in search of pierogies. Thankfully, we found S&D Polish Deli! They have AMAZING pierogies! Actually, they have all sorts of amazing food, but I want to focus on the pierogies first. We stopped in at lunch, and they had ready-to-go boxes of four pierogies, made fresh that morning (or just minutes ago). They told us the pierogies are made fresh throughout the day to keep up with customer demand. I had the potato and farmer's cheese, and my husband had the meat, and we traded bites to be able to sample both. They were splendid and oh-so-tasty! The fillings were delicious, and the pasta wraps were outstanding. It really was a nearly indescribable meal, except to say that they were the perfect pierogies and exactly what we were looking for! We had raspberry and seaberry compotes to drink, which were excellent; what's better than juice with actual fruit included?! S&D is a complete quality deli, family-run, with authentic food from Poland (chips, drinks, etc.) as well as a full deli counter with fresh meats and cheeses. We were happy to discover that they have an extensive online catalogue of fresh foods--everything from single items to family dinners to party platters--and can ship anywhere in the US. We are placing an order when we get home! The deli is a neighborhood fixture nestled between a fresh fish market/restaurant and a candy store and is a local gem in the Strip District.
