I've been to a lot of auto shops around Akron. Not being from here and living by myself in the US, it's difficult to know where to go to get good service. The other two Akron shops I've been to, also well rated on Yelp and Google Maps were a huge disappointment. One of the shops asked me for $63 to change my 3rd break light, something I did myself for $3 (no tools necessary since its easy to access, just bought the bulb). This time I had a weird sound in my car and I went here. IT WAS WONDERFUL. They were quick to help me with my car, to diagnose the problem, explain to me what the problem was and fix it. I also asked for some advice on my tires, since I had been told I had to change them immediately at one of the shops I went to before. They told me the tires were still good, that I'd eventually have to change them but it wasn't urgent. As a young woman by herself it's hard to trust people in auto service, but I'll definitely be going back to this place if I need any work done on my car. I'm copying my review from Google here b/c the whole world deserves to know about this gem of an auto mechanic shop! Can't say enough about how kind (and knowledgable) Ed was. I was driving through from out of state and had problems with my engine on the road -- barely made it into Akron overnight. I did a quick search of auto shops the next morning and took a chance on S&H based on its proximity and positive reviews here on Yelp. First of all, the super-sweet shop cat -- she's the icing on the cake! Secondly, Ed couldn't be more professional or knowledgable about the actual mechanics of automobile functions. Third, he refused to charge me for his time (which he should have!) and sent me off on the road having checked the engine carefully with great advice for maintenance of my high-mileage car moving forward. There is a problem on our car's braking system. We don't know why the light of braking system was on for several minutes the day before yesterday. My friend introduced S & H Auto Repair to us, and my husband and I went there the next day. The owner and the car mechanic who checked the car for us are all such nice and kind people. After they checked our car, they told us that there was not big problem of the car and we didn't have to change the braking right now. Then I asked the owner how much for checking the car, he told us no charge since we did not change anything new. However, it took them almost 1 hour to check our car. This is our first time to fix a car; therefore we don't have much experience how much we should pay. I was speechless at that time. How wonderful persons they are! However, I still hold the view that we should pay, since they spent much time on our car. I think we should visit them and express our gratitude next week!~ read more

When I moved here 2 years ago for school I quickly was in need of a mechanic. After a quick look around I found Ed's place. He was very upfront and honest from the beginning about finding a solution to my problem. He did everything he could to reduce the cost and tried various routes before finding the right solution. Being a college student we tried the cheaper solutions first to see if they would work and from the very start he made it clear that he would only charge me for the service if it fixed the problem. This was very selfless of him and something that's hard to come by in a mechanic. I have come to him for other problems since and he always gets everything done in a quick and efficient manner without compromising the quality of work. First off, this is the prototypical mom & pop auto shop. Ed (the owner) is a great guy and, like other reviewers have stated, is wiling to work with you on the price. He isn't in it to screw his customers. I was rotating through the area, and stumbled upon the shop via yelp. Boy, am I glad I did. I got quotes as high as $400 to replace a starter, which was easily accessible from the top of the engine bay. He replaced it for around half that price and had it done in an hour. The guys at the shop also spent a good amount of time brainstorming as to what my issue was. They did not want to replace the starter and have that not be the issue. This was the best experience I have ever had at an auto shop. I would definitely recommend the shop to all friends and family. You will not be disappointed. While on a road trip cross-country I ran into car trouble in Akron. After getting diagnostics at several places and making several phone calls to compare prices I ran across S&H Auto reviews online. Ed, the owner, not only offered me the best price (by over $300) of all the garages I contacted but was friendly and informative. He walked me through what was going on with my car, showing me the engine and diagnostic results as he ran them. He was kind and honest about my car's needs and quickly took my vehicle in to work on it the same day, accommodating my road trip needs (which was above and beyond what was necessary). just got a used car, so naturally it has a thousand problems with it. i'm a student and didn't know where to go, but was referred here. the guys here were able to not only fix the main issues, but even went above and beyond to fix my horn and check out my air conditioning. the service was fast and the men were all so friendly to me. since my parents help out with my car issues, i was also able to set it up for my dad to be informed of the problems and solutions in detail, as well as set up the bills going to him. overall this place was really honest and welcoming, and the mechanics all do such great work. i would truly recommend read more

Ed and his mechanics are the greatest guys. I was told by another repair shop that I needed multiple repairs. I wanted a second opinion. Ed showed me (took me to my car on the lift) what needed to be fixed. There were at least 2 things I didn't need that the other shop said I did!. I was given a list of repairs and Ed prioritized them in order of what I needed soon and what can wait. The other shop made it sound that everything needed to be repaired immediately. My husband and I were making a cross-country move and found ourselves needing some repairs to our 2008 Dodge Caravan......in a place we had never been and where we knew no one. We called a couple of repair shops before finding Ed and his team, who were willing to see us first thing the next morning. They were so kind, efficient, and VERY reasonable! If I could give this place zero stars, I absolutely would. The fact that I even wasted my time here is beyond unacceptable. The service at this location is beyond disgraceful--it's infuriating! They actually WELDED my battery to my right bumper. Let that sink in for a moment--who does that? The sheer incompetence is staggering. This is not just unprofessional, it's outright dangerous! Ed is extremely knowledgeable and willing to work with you. He exemplifies the importance of customer service. An honest shop is extremely difficult to come by unfortunately, but he is fair in a field of service that is notorious for vultures. On a more personal note, he has been servicing my vehicle for years and there has not been an issue he could not straighten out thus far. I can't say more good things about my experience with Ed at S & H. He's honest and cuts straight to the chase, while doing his best to give you the best deal possible. I was pretty much thinking it would be a waste of time, but they got my car up and running in a very reasonable amount of time. Ed is the owner and will try to help you on the price as much as possible. I got quoted for one part from Midas being $360 at the end of the installation. Ed was able to replace the same part and a tie rod for just over $300. I would have paid around $500 at Midas for that same exact work. I have had multiple random problems with my car. From easy fixes with my oil to large projects with my turbo and coolant system...Ed has fixed it all. All the staff is friendly and willing to help.
