Yummy! I first stopped here in September 2024. I decided to go back because I was in stanwood for an errand and I was craving a good brew and some food. When I entered, I was immediately greeted with a smile and a welcome, which felt good. I drove an hour to get there and it just set the tone right away. I was low-key impressed and thankful to have a friendly bartender, as the last time I went (2 yrs. Ago) I felt the service wasn't the best. This was a different bartender. I asked about their brews and was informed they'd switched a bit. So, I ordered the Hazy and the Blonde, both of which are brewed in-house by SAAL. They were. both great. Good body on the IPA and almost no bitterness. The blonde was good too, although blondes aren't my typical go-to personally, so maybe I'm not the best judge of that. The owner came and spoke with me for a minute about their business and how 2020 had inspired them to brew the Hazy. I think it's called "All Love" or something similar, and it had something to do with the riots of 2020 and how we needed more love in the world. I dunno, felt inspired. It was a good conversation and I felt that the owner is passionate about what he does. Which I really liked. A business I want to support. The poutine I ordered was good but not great. I don't usually order poutine so I had low expectations but it just feels like it's just in the menu for the sake of being on the menu. Nothing felt inspired or original and this dish would benefit greatly from a little recipe switch up. Maybe use a better gravy and crispier fries? It could be great. What a great find in Stanwood! Excellent beer, tasty food and snacks at reasonable prices, kind, friendly service in an historic firehouse building. Outdoor seating in warm weather, trivia on Mondays, great local flavor and a salubrious vibe. Standouts include their "adult" grilled cheese with apple and a delicious tomato bisque, and the Zombie appetizer: a monster mound of tots with Mac & cheese, chili, and bacon...my goodness. My fave beers so far are the Three Sided Coin, a light-bodied mild rye bitter that is super food-friendly, and A Point In Time, their medium-bodied earthy oatmeal stout. We were visiting my daughter and wanted to find a place that had poutine, her favorite. We found SAAL, a restaurant built inside an old fire house. It was pretty neat! There are tables inside by the bar and also tables outside. We were greeted by a very friendly staff member. She came right over with menus. My husband wanted to try a local beer on tap. He told her what he likes and she said she'd surprise him. He loved it! Then, of course, we ordered poutine. It was good. Not the best ever but sufficient. My daughter got 3 cheeseburger sliders. They were yummy. My husband got a burger and liked that it was cooked correctly. I got the turkey, bacon avocado melt. The bacon was a bit undercooked for me, so my daughter took it. We stopped into Saal brewing while in Stanwood and were immediately welcomed in. Because it was just 15 minutes prior to closing, we offered to take out our meal, however the super nice woman working there encouraged us to order in. Hubs and his brother loved their beer and really enjoyed their food, I ordered the Saal dip with sweet potato fries. The fries were cooked perfectly, though I didn't care for the taste of the beef or amounts of gristle. I'm not sure if it was something they used when heating the meat, or something else, but if it hadn't been so close to closing and I wasn't so hungry, I would have left it uneaten and ordered something else. First off, SAAL is very dog friendly; they even have a dog on their logo and sell dog-related merchandise (I bought a shirt and a collapsable dog bowl, and both were very reasonably priced). Their food is above average for a brewery and they offer more interesting options than most restaurants. I got the blue cheesecake with a baguette which was very good, and a few other items. I specifically liked their habanero pineapple salsa, which was spicy yet very good. For their beers, some I really liked and some I did not like at all. My wife and I stopped into Saal Brewing for lunch while in the area. Free street parking can be found. Discover is an accepted form of payment. Google Pay, Apple Pay and Samsung Pay is also accepted. I looked like Saal has a large outdoor seating area when the weather warms up. Saal is a family and dog friendly brewery. Wine is available for those who do not care for craft beer. During our visit, I had a 20oz Brick Road IPA for $8. My wife had a 20oz Robert's Red for $8. We shared the Turkey, Bacon, Avocado Melt with Tater Tots for $15.50. We shared a Chipotle Smoked Chicken Slider for $3.95. We shared a Fish Taco for $3.95 + $0.25 up-charge for Pineapple Habanero sauce. Of everything that we shared, we both thought the Chipotle Smoked Chicken Slider was the tastiest. Service was friendly and efficient. This was a quick dinner stop (first time here) after attending an evening exhibit at the nearby Pilchuck Glass School. Although we arrived only 15 minutes before closing time, they were nice enough to serve us and we were so glad they did, as this is really a great place for beer and a meal. I really liked my Scotch ale and smoked pork hero sandwich. There was plenty of flavor with the pepperoccini and jalapeños and the included tater tots were perfectly crispy. My wife wasn't as thrilled with her SALL Dip sando, but my brother gave the turkey, bacon, avocado melt two thumbs up. The firehouse vibe pays homage to the former volunteer fire station. Stopped off for a beer on Saturday, turned out they had a music event going on there- the gal was pretty good and it was absolutely packed! We enjoyed our cider, especially the sour ale! We ordered pork belly tacos that were to die for, I've been craving them ever since! There was a bit of a disgruntled customer- I didn't feel they handled it with the utmost professionalism- one of the gals even says "do you see how many people are here?" (In a snotty tone) definitely not how you talk to customers (and no I'm not sticking up for the customer either, she WAS being dramatic and rude) BUT the way she was spoken to just really turned me off ‍ businesses should be professional at all times no matter the case. Other than that, we really enjoyed ourselves and the service WE received- would go back! *side note- they could do better with their sticker game. Yes they are FREE and seem to be good enough quality, but I definitely pictured something larger (like 4") with a cleaner more modern look (we collect a lot of brewery stickers and put them all over our yeti cooler!). I'd love to see them do an all b&w (no red) sticker- of the Dalmatian with SAAL Brewing underneath, cut with just a thin white border around the dog. Most collectors are willing to pay $2-5 for a decent looking sticker!!! read more

I was more impressed than I thought last weekend when we stumbled upon this brewery while gunkholing around Stanwood. Located in a historic old firehouse (complete with uber cool firepole!), SAAL (pronounced SAIL) is a small-but-mighty brewery with a great selection of brews, ciders, and an impressive looking food menu too. I enjoyed their Red Ale, which was complex and malty in a way that made me want another! The dude enjoyed their Hazy IPA, too. We were tempted to grab lunch but we had dinner reservations later and didn't want to ruin our appetites. We'll be back, though, and take a deeper dive into both their beer and food menus! It's been a while....decided to give them another try. Sadly no improvement since my last visit several months ago. Our server was not friendly, food was pretty awful. When questioned about one of their menu items our server became very rude, put out that I was questioning something on their menu!! I needed to know what was in something for allergies. Our Water glasses remained empty for at least 30 minutes and it was not busy, actually there were 4 staff members all hanging out at the bar! Amazing amazing amazing!! We went on a rainy day for a beer and lunch. The service was top notch!! Wonderful people running this brewery / restaurant. My mom got the sliders. The pork was sooo tender I would order this next time. The Rueben was really good! I asked for a side of sauce since I thought it could use more. We swung by SAAL on our way to Camano Island earlier this year. It's before you cross over into the island and the brewery is located downtown. It's in a historical building which is pretty cool and unique! I've been wanting to come to this brewery for a long time(as well as Camano Island) and it finally was happening! Food here is pretty good! I got the fish tacos which I liked. I always do love fish tacos! I had two different beers at SAAAL. Beers were okay but not anything too groundbreaking. Don't Call Me SAAL was the first we had. It was an IPA and was alright. Nothing too earth shattering or groundbreaking. I did like the second beer a bit better, the Velvet Frost Cream Ale. We were so excited to eat here. I called ahead and asked about gluten-free options, and was told that SAAL had gluten free breads and buns to accommodate my mother-in-law. What a nice thing to do, right? Unfortunately, we had a really awful service experience here. The food and beers were good overall, but the waitress was very difficult when it came to ordering gluten-free bread. In the end, we were literally REFUSED BREAD. And this situation is every bit as annoying and ridiculous as it sounds. My mother-in-law ordered two pork sliders, but the waitress said they didn't have gluten-free slider buns, only a full-sized GF bun. Okay, fine. When we asked if she could make a sandwich with the pulled pork on a full-sized bun, the server said "she won't do that" in reference to the owner/chef. We asked for several options and variations. "She can't do that" was the only response. The server instead of recommending other options, only suggested that my mother-in-law order the sliders without any bread at all. My mother-in-law, trying to be nice and growing tired of all the back-and-forth, agreed. Then it occurred to me. The GF bun was available on any sandwich for an up-charge, so we asked if we could just get the slider ingredients (pork and slaw), and then pay the up-charge to get a GF bun on the side. Once again, "No, she won't do that." This was getting absurd. WHY? we asked. Why on earth can we not pay an extra $2 or 3 dollars for a simple piece of bread? "Inventory" was the only explanation. Huh? You can't just sell us a dang piece of bread? We are TRYING to PAY you for BREAD and you are saying NO? After we finished our order, we saw the server talking to a fellow co-worker and obviously gesturing to us and complaining about us. We should have just canceled the order and left. But instead, we waited. And boy, did we ever wait. Probably 25 minutes. Everyone else was served first. Guess it takes a long time to make a sandwich with no bread. In the end, the food was good. The pork belly tacos were tasty, and the veggie banh mi was quite good. Particularly yummy were the sweet potato fries. The only thing that was NOT very good? You guessed it: my mother-in-law's small, sad plate of 2 day old pork, which she said tasted a little warmed over. So I asked for a bill adjustment to reflect the "inventory" of having no bread with the slider, since the "inventory" was an issue when we wanted to pay for the larger GF bun. The server, by now completely annoyed, said she would just take the dish off the bill. When I mentioned that I had worked in restaurants for years, and that this was NOT good customer service, a friend of the servers', who was sitting at the bar, decided to chime in. This is when things got ugly. She said I was making her friend uncomfortable and that she was going to call the police. Excuse me? I deserve to be arrested for nicely speaking my mind and standing up to bad customer service? What is up these days with the restaurant industry? Seems like they will hire anyone these days. So sad. So, basically my advice is this: don't eat here unless you want to receive attitude and resistance for trying to spend money and buy something. Also, don't eat here unles you want to be threatened with ARREST simply because you're calling out the utter nonsense you've just experienced. Well, maybe I should have let the police take me away, because at least they give you bread in jail. We will never return here and will happily tell our many local friends of this really absurd experience. read more

From the second we walked in, the atmosphere was great, the server was kind and welcoming. The beer was good according to my husband. Quick and efficient service, the menu was good and they had a great selection of beer, cider and kambucha. We ordered the Zombie tots and it was definitely a good sized portion. SAAL has become our go-to stop after our regular birding trips in the area. Patrick works the afternoon shift and is always there with a warm greeting and a cold beer. And the food selection is awesome. I'm usually a one-trick pony when eating out, but there is so much tasty variety that I see myself trying new things from the diverse menu and daily specials. But I must admit the sliders are my favorite. Perhaps most importantly, the space is large and well ventilated including a accessible outdoor area. We look forward to many more visits. read more

The guy taking our order needs a hearing aid as he keep yelling that he could not hear us, not very loud in there as I could hear just fine and have a hearing loss. Did not seem to want to help us with the beer order. Hubs is really picky about beer and wanted to find one he liked. That did not happen. My salad was an overpriced bowl of lettuce with a few pieces of overcooked fish and maybe a tablespoon of 'corn salsa'.
