The place is very quaint. The colors are very vibrant and they definitely pull you in from the outside. Its on an off street so you have to look out. Parking wise - Its metered parking out in the front. I believe the large driveway to the side is strictly for deliveries and church-goers... If that is a church next door to it. Inside, the place was a bit smaller than expected, but it is definitely more intimate. The owner is very friendly and always checks up on you. Food-wise, on a scale from 1-10, I give it an 8 and 1/2. I tried the Lomo Saltado and it was very delicious, but my boyfriend had the Ceviche and I give it a 7 only because I am not a big Ceviche fan myself. The prices are a bit on the expensive side so I would only come here once in a blue moon compared to Griselda's in Paterson or Chevere's in Passaic. read more

I read the reviews on Yelp before trying out the restaurant, but I thought, "Let's give it the benefit of the doubt" despite the low reviews. For two people, our total was close to $70. Nathaly was right, the Huancaina sauce's color and taste was off. And the Papa Rellena missed the mark as well. In addition, both entrees were on the tasteless side. The cooks in the back follow the recipes the owner creates, but those recipes need tweaking. Steve Irwin from Restaurant Impossible would agree. For all who are thinking about trying this restaurant, go for lunch instead. At least you aren't paying city prices for taste that will most likely disappoint. read more

I love this place!! The food is excellent. Everything taste fresh, and is perfectly seasoned. You want to know how I know they know how to properly season their food? There is no salt or pepper on any of the tables, it doesn't need anything extra on it. The service was outstanding the staff really cares and wants your feedback. I totally love the ambiance of this place it's warm and comfortable like you're in someone's home. I highly recommend this place and can't wait to return. Great spot. Really accommodating and attentive staff, intimate setting, and great food. We had the ceviche, the taku taku (sp?) the snapper special, the tour of Lima , a Chaufa plate, and an avocado shrimp salad. Everything was delicious! Had dinner there for mothers day with my lady I first notice the place was empty; Only three other tables were service two inside family and One outside family. Waiter would not let us sit in the back corner; claim it was for reservation and no one came. Second they would not honor livingsocial complimentary, waiter stated not available. Third grill snapper fish was good, but not one of my best tasting cook fish but it pass with a ( C + ) definately not peruvian autêntica food. Over price for that hole in the wall restaurant. Will not recommend to no one save your money. Reason ms. "barbie doll waiter" stated the red snapper price will be between $20, $25 - $30 got the bill on the red snapper it was $33.00 my lady chicken ------ was $17 and the shrimp tempura it was nothing special for $12 or $13 for 5 little pieces of cheap breaded shrimp. We brought our own bottle of wine which we thoght was the best thing; besides coming out our house and celebrateing her mother day and spending some money and taking a drive down to Rutherford N.J. First time at Sabor Peru. The wonderful food is a delicious blend of Latin and Asian. My wife and I shared the Arrioz Chaufa Especial and Jalea Sin Ropa. Both were superb! 2 (and a half) stars for food, 5 stars for the owner, 3 (and a half) for service. There are very few dishes that taste authentic to me. If I scored solely on the lomo saltado and tacu tacu, it'd be a 4. They were both very good. The meat for the lomo was tender and the dish had great flavor overall. The huancaina sauce tastes like it's made from powdered cheese. The tallarines verdes were watery, and the menu itself is overpriced. Is it because we're in Rutherford where there aren't any other Peruvian restaurants? The owners are nice and friendly, but the service took forever. It took almost 10 minutes for drinks and then we were also charged for the cancha, where every other Peruvian place it's a standard complementary treat (like bread at an Italian restaurant). There's a ton of other Peruvian spots in neighboring towns ... the only difference is the ambiance I guess and the town itself. I would go back for the lomo, but as a pick-up item, and as a treat, and maybe only from the lunch menu. It's $15 for dinner, where every other place it's more like $12. read more

Love the food, I've had the Whole Snapper with The grilled seafood on top and it was Amazing! The Empanadas, Chaufa de Mariscos and Causa are in my favorite as well as the Tacu Tacu. The owners are very cool and servers are knowledgeable, but it does get packed at night I would recommend reservations. They're small so keep that in mind when you come in. However the food was not as good as I was expecting. The cerviche had GREAT flavor however the fish had the texture as though it was frozen, 2 stars. Haven't been here in 2 years since we moved out of Rutherford. Missed this place,owners and staff are so nice. Food is amazing!!! If you haven't been here, you are missing out. They had a chimichurri steak special, 3 people at my table got and loved it. I put the chimichurri sauce on my steak and eggs, WOW!!! Ceviche is one of the best around, could eat that every day. While visiting NY/NJ for a few days, we decided to try this little spot since it was near the hotell. The restaurant was in a small house and it was very dimly lit and romantic. The servers, who I also think may have been the owners, were very friendly. The food was absolutely delicious. The pollo saltado was great, although it tasted very different from pollo saltado I've had in the DC area (from Sardi's, Cebiche House, etc).I don't know whose is more "authentic", but it was great. My bf's meal looked even more delicious. However, the tres leches was not good. It was frozen in the middle which ruined the whole thing. Maybe if it had been thoroughly thawed out, the texture and taste wouldve been much better. They don't serve alcohol, by the way. read more

Great food and great service! We had shrimp ceviche for the appetizer ... I don't usually care for shrimp, but I gobbled up quite a few from this dish. Very light and refreshing. I had the saltado (mixed chicken and steak). Very tasty, and it was served with white rice ... the way the rice soaked up the sauce was absolutely wonderful. I forget what my fiance had (I think it was the chicken chaufas/stir-fried rice), but he said it was great as well. We ended the meal with a piece of tres leches cake - great way to end the meal. So my buddy and I took our families there after our Med school graduation. This place was awesome! It's a small, intimate restaurant located near a residential area (I thought I was lost at first). Great little place. If you're there on the weekend, a reservation is a must (even though we made ours 2 hrs before dining). We had the tacu tacu with steak and it was phenomenal. My husband would have eaten two if he was physically capable of it. The sauce wells impeccable with the rice and bean "pancake" and the steak was done just right. At first it wasn't a problem (though the view left a lot to be desired) but periodically there were loud bangs, etc. Maybe I just chose a poor entree - bistec a lo pobre - but there was no flavor to it. I expected some kind of spices or sauce to add a little something but there was nothing beyond the lime and onion salad (which was basically onions). I ordered the steak medium and there was no pink at all; of course, it was so thin it was difficult to tell how it was done. It also was a Sunday - not sure if there would be open tables on a Saturday. Ani is familiar with celiac which is a huge plus if you have issues with gluten. Besides what was already listed on the menu as GF, she told me what other items could be altered to exclude gluten. Great authentic flavors. I've never had Peruvian food but it's similar to Columbian food. I feel like Brazilian and Argentinian cuisine has European and African influences, Peruvian has more Caribbean and Asian influences which is I felt like it was similar to Columbian or Cuban food. I came here on a Saturday afternoon and the place was empty. I went there because of a recommendation of a friend, I guess the restaurant being empty should have been a sign not to eat here. The food was mediocre and my girlfriend got sick from the food here. I order the ceviche especial and it didn't taste right or smelled right for that matter. We also order their know dish Lima especial and the chaufa rice was not cooked right and not the authentic Peruvian taste .
