LA Sanitation operates these sites and this location is one of six S.A.F.E. Collection Centers in LA County as of November 2023. Few quick rules: (1) It is against the law to transport more than 15 gallons or 125 pounds of hazardous waste to collection sites. A convenient place to drop off hazardous wastes. I had 10+ different containers of mostly paint products and very strong cleaners. I had to find a way to dump them safely and was glad to have found this place. It's a drive-thru and every item will be removed from trunk. You can also recycle electronics, batteries, propane tanks, etc but the one thing I couldn't dump at this site was refrigerant. For refrigerant, I found a company called Chiller Services in Santa Fe Springs (13564 Imperial Hwy) that would accept it. If you're not sure if something will be accepted at this SAFE location, just call ahead instead of making assumptions like I did. The staff here is friendly and the line moved rather quickly. You know those popcorn collector tins at movie theaters? We had three of those Star Wars tins filled to the brims with used, expired, and busted batteries of all sizes and brands. We also had some anti-freeze and motor oil. Then there were the old school fluorescent light bulbs that we replaced with LEDs. All of these items and a tons more household hazardous waste and E-waste that you shouldn't throw in your garbage can at home should be brought here to the S.A.F.E. Collection Center. S.A.F.E. stands for Solvents/Automotive/Flammables/Electronics. This is my closest site, but there are 6 other locations available to residents of Los Angeles County. This particular center is open Saturdays and Sundays except holidays from 9:00am-3:00pm. You don't have to sign anything or submit any paperwork. They only ask for your zip code. Just pack it up as best as you can. Or like with the broken light bulbs we had, we just put them in a plastic bag and they accepted them. Put everything you need to get rid of that S.A.F.E. can legally accept in the back of your trunk or truck bed. Follow the signs. Stay in the vehicle while they unload it. I could not believe all the almost empty paint cans and solvents I had in my garage for years. Told the wife, we need to take a road trip to the outskirts of dtla. With navigation, we had no problem finding the place. Keep an eye out for the address on the fence. Once we entered, we drove up to the stop sign and waited for someone to direct us. I am so glad that there's a SAFE Collection Center in central Los Angeles. It sure beats driving to BFE. I've been here a few times. I never get any hassle on disposal. The general guideline is to keep only items that you want to dispose in your trunk. Drive into the Collection Center, wait for staff to wave you to designated area, turn off the car and pop the trunk open. By the way, you are supposed to stay in your car. Staff will come up to your window, ask a few questions, such as if there are any syringes (I can't remember the other questions; the questions are concerning the safety of handling your disposal.) Staff will proceed to empty your trunk, ask for your zip code and you are free to get on with your day. I wish I can get a complete list of accepted items. I haven't had any items turned away yet.
