Overall the worst experience i have ever had with a bicycle shop. Let me explain: I purchased a specialized diverge comp e5 in November 2020. Day 1, I'm riding, chain pops off front chain ring. Take it to specialized, they tell me hanger is bent! Why did that happen? No explanation. Fast forward 5 months and i have the same issue every time i ride. Specialized won't take accountability and neither is Safety Cycle. Their condescending explanation that this is "normal" wear and tear even though it's been happening since the first day I got it. They then have the audacity to tell me i should replace my chain, chain ring and cassette to fix the issue. I hate this place and will never EVER return. They should be ashamed of themselves. Biked in to the local neighborhood shop for the first time and was nicely greeted, it all went wrong after that. I went in asking if I could borrow snap ring pliers, the answer was no because the tool is delicate and I could break it. What they don't know is that I am a mechanic and knew exactly what I was doing, I just didn't happen to have the right tool in my toolbox. They had a sign at the door saying help needed and I was going to offer my help, I can put a bike together fairly quick, I've been doing so for the past 14 years. I guess they didn't had the obligation to borrow the tool. I just don't understand why they wanted to profit from a 2 minute job, it would had been like $5 for them. Now I am going to buy a whole set of snap ring pliers for under $20. They lost a future costumer for something that I consider stupid and I could have helped them in the future. Second time I've been here and have been price gauged. As a knowledgeable rider and bike mechanic, who has a really nice bike, it's almost as if they feel they can take advantage of you. I called BS on their pricing last time, and it happened again. $120 to replace a tire and blow it up and include sealant. It's a $60 tire and $20 at most to put the tire on and include the sealant. When I challenged them they have no customer service except to say that's what they charge. If you know how good LBS' can be, and I do, don't go here. They overcharge and take far too long and don't care if you're not satisfied. There are too many LBS in LA that do care, and want your business. Safety won't be getting my business any longer, i should have realized after the first bad experience. My bad, don't let it be yours! read more

Excellent service, inventory and attentive staff who care. I am an older rider buying an electric bike for the first time. Eric was exceptional in every way. He was very detailed and made sure I had the right bike for my size and assisted me with accessories to insure a safe ride. He went over all the features of the bike and showed me how everything worked more then once and again after delivery. He was patient and gave me all the time I needed to make a good choice. I strongly recommend Safety Cycle. I was in the market for a nice e-bike. I shopped around and ended up buying a nice Aventon from the guys at Safety Cycle. They were super friendly and helpful. When I got home, my wife decided she wanted a bike too, so we both went back and bought her a bike as well. Waited an hour for just air, and they still didn't get to my bicycle. The ride man asked me and my friend to wait outside because there were too many people inside the store, but didn't asked anyone else. When we asked how much longer it would take, he said "the more I talked to you, the longer it's going to take", he was not the person working on the bikes. When I came to pick up my bike, I didn't notice the wrong tires were put on until after I got home, and upon calling the manager, Kyle was super helpful and they corrected the problem with professionalism and great service. My husband and I stopped by here to get some U-locks for our bikes. A gentleman named Song helped us out. Not only did he answer our questions, but he went the extra mile and installed the brackets to hold the locks on the bikes. He also demonstrated how to use them so we wouldn't screw the mechanism up. This place is great, in my book. They open at 9:30 am on a Saturday. Which means you can get your bike fixed and get on with your day. Many local cycling shops open after 11, most likely because the people who work there want to get out and cycle in the am. And I don't blame them. However, it is GREAT to know there is someone there for you when your dh's slime innertube breaks at 9:45 am on a Saturday. The guys in the back are super helpful and do not scoff at the cycling newbs. The prices are reasonable and they do their work quickly. Loves. read more

I walked in with money and visions of biking around town but walked out of here with money and a frown. I'm a very spontaneous woman who flies by the seat of her pants. There's no rhyme or reason to my purchases. When I visited this bike store, I was hoping to get mauled by a chirpy salesperson whose time I could waste with dumb questions while also practicing my flirting skills. Flirting in the sense of contemplating spending a ridiculous amount money on something when I probably shouldn't and eventually backing out once I make it to the register. An old fashioned tease! In any case. I walked in here and at least 4 employees were doing a combination of tuning up bikes and demonstrating the personalities of the wax figures at Madame Tussauds. I wasn't greeted once. I even did a figure eight walk around the store to see if eventually they would try to take advantage of a silly girl with money to spend. What? Am I not good enough for you?! I made direct eye contact with the employee behind the register and even gave that stupid "Hi I don't want to have to ask you to do your f**king job" smile (the one without teeth), with no success. After being ignored by more than one person, I decided today was never a day to buy a bike. Instead it turned out to be one that resulted in buying Taco Bell. They should just be glad I had that as a backup plan or else I'd come here to fulfill my fantasy of bike tipping and emulating dominoes. read more

This shop is in my neighborhood. I really like the repair shop crew, but I was rubbed the wrong way by the owner. I'm not a hater, but he just wasn't very nice or interested in my needs, instead he was more concerned with letting me know I was wrong. I was trying to build a bike from different parts. Bottom line is he could have been more tactful in his approach. I ended up going to Orange 20 and REI for my needs. I'm pretty self sufficient as a bicyclist and could have been a long time customer, but now I just enjoy my ride to Orange 20(which is 2 miles further). I love to support local business, but as a business you have to earn my loyalty. They lost about $700-$900 in my one visit. I love to spend $$$$$$ on my plethora of bikes. read more

I highly recommend Safety Cycle. I use them for all my bike needs. They have a pretty good selection of bikes in lots of different styles, including fancy stuff -- retro styled cruisers, unicycles, you name it! I think I've even seen a few used bikes for sale in the back. They've also got a great selection of essential accessories. The repair guys in back are great, too, and they do things pretty cheaply, often while you wait. They even have a little bit of parking in the back alley. --update May 08-- My original bike was stolen, so I went in here for a new one. I got one of the used ones from the back for a good price, and they adjusted the seat & tires while I waited. Yay, Safety Cycle. read more

This has been long overdue, but I really need to give this shop a shout-out. My dad shipped me a bike (awesome, Dad!) but I didn't know how to assemble it. I called about a dozen bike shops in town, and all of them quoted pretty high prices for the service. Safety Cycle was in my hood, so I decided to call them as well. They offered to assemble the bike for less than HALF the price all the other shops quoted me! Sweet! The guys at the shop are really nice and didn't make me feel like an idiot for not knowing how to put it together. They also installed a couple things I bought in the store for free (toe clips & an odometer). Cut to a few years later, when my beloved bike pops a tire. Once again I call around... and once again, Safety Cycle comes through, quoting me a price to buy & install the tires for MUCH less than all other shops in the area. Once again the guys at the shop are courteous, nice, and fast. They've got parking in the back and are really easy-going. Great local bike shop! read more

It's a funky shop name, but other than that I have to say I'm happy with my experience. I haven't had a chance to go to their store, but ordered a couple of tires from them. Most other places were charging about $60 a piece (Specialized Armadillos) but they were $45.99 a piece here! Seriously made me wonder was I going to get a pair that had been sitting out in the sun, and were all dried and cracked. Nope. Ordered them Sunday, got them today on Wednesday. If I get a chance to swing by, I'm looking forward to. If their prices are this ridiculously low on tires, I imagine you can find some other pretty good deals here. Now that you've found a good bike shop for some accessories... no excuses to be driving to work anymore! "Cheap" gas is now basically $4/gallon! See ya BIKING TO WORK! read more

I went here to look at the Dahon folding bikes because they had the most folders in the shop the 10% YELP COUPON and the free shipping (i live in san diego). When i got there i found the bikes had been reduced 10% of the price and they still took the yelp 10% off!!!!! I bought one 30 min after i got there. Got the Eco c66 for $335 out the door thats $100 bucks less! Ill be back to get another for my GF. or mabie ill get another for my self and she can have this one hummmmm. Safety Cycle tuned up my bike and now it rides like a chariot on wings of gold. I am surprised to read the Yelps about bad customer service. I cycle a lot and use my bike for fun and for transportation. Any reason to not get in my car is a good one and I rely on Safety Cycle for my biking needs. Gotta keep the iron horse in good shape if she's gonna be riding down 3rd street. Might as well throw your bike tires down a garbage disposal when you're riding down 3rd but I digress. Even when I've just wanted some air in the tires or grease on the chain, they always hook it up and don't charge me. I go to Safety Cycle because they're locally owned, have been there a long time, and not as pricey as Orange 20. I've dealt with just about everyone there and have had nothing but great interactions with staff and great work done on my bike. read more

A bit disappointed I'm not gonna lie, I was hoping that this would become my local bike shop since it's pretty close to work. So they installed the handlebars and did new tape wrap. Looks good, but the scary part was when I got on the bike before my ride the next day and the handle bar/stem screws were lose and I almost fell over them, the cassette and chain were not washed, bike wasn't wiped down. Please be more careful with customer bikes. Some of us have spent quite a bit on them and trust the shops I take it to. read more

Wow! This place is amazing. I don't even know where to begin. The customer service is welcoming, the prices can't be beat, and the overall feel you get from everyone inside is great. My girlfriend and I went in to check out some Dahons. We called in before driving over so we could have some built to test ride out back. Despite having plenty of other customers in the store, they were able to quickly put together the bikes just as we were getting there. The guys working all sound very knowledgeable will answer any questions you have. They'll even answer the "dumb" questions without sounding condescending in the process. They help you find what you're looking for and don't try to upsell you on higher priced models. They offer 10% off the retail price, then add on the 10% you'll get for mentioning Yelp and the prices are impossible to beat. Not to mention you get free diagnosis tests and basic maintenance at discount for the life of the bike. I can see why they have so many people in the shop all the time, the staff is friendly and the work they do seems to be top notch as well. It seems like they know some people on a first name basis, so I don't know why people would be return customers if they're not satisfied with the product they put out. Local Bike Shop has outfitted me with everything for my used road bike. They diagnosed everything for me and installed a new cassette and chain at a great price. Initially I was coming back everyday to get tubes and tires so I got a nice bike pump. It works great since I don't have an air compressor. The safety cycle team noticed and gave me some riding tips for while in traffic and I haven't had any puncture issues for a month. Overall I am so satisfied with the friendly service and great availability of parts. I am saving so much money by just having a bike, no car. But I budget some cash every month for transportation so now I get to go spend it at Safety Cycle! Thanks guys! read more

Wow!!! Unbelievable tested my bike after they tuned it up. Could not shift the back gears but what really blew my mind .... The handle bars weren't tighten. They don't even bother to test ride their work. I had left 2 bikes to be fixed. The 2nd bike, on the 3rd try they gave me some complementary new shifters. Guess what.... they didn't tighten the right side one. A simple ride test would of discovered this.....ya think. Here's the best. I get the second bike home and now notice the handle bars don't line up with front tire. This is a shorten version of the aggravation - Do yourself a favor - find a good bike shop. Good bike shop. The sell multiple brands but surprisingly the sells Cannondale and Specialized. (I ride both [downhills and all mountain] and have been burdened with using more than one shop because very few carry both brands.) I noticed tons of fixies around the shop (looked amazing) and many were less than $300.00 The bicycle techs appear to be very knowledgeable and honest. SERVICE DEPT IS OK. They are FAST with their service. The pricing was average I suppose. How am I supposed to know how much bike parts cost? LOL The complaint that I have is that they were supposed to "tune up" my bike. They loosened things and did not re-tighten them (my kick stand and seat) and I do not have that type of screwdriver (weird hex looking things!) so now I can't ride my bike until I can find time take it back to them. It is very frustrating. Also, they replaced my rear rim and did not put it back onto the bike straight so it hits the brakes and the side of the bike. I feel there should be a better check and review system before returning bikes to customers. This should not have happened to my bike. The price on the new bikes there is way overpriced, I saw one of the same cruiser bikes over at Costco for nearly 1/2 the price with all the same accessories (still on sale at Costco now). read more

I've been to safety cycle several dozen times in the last two years and I've never had anything but a good experience. The staff is laid back, down-to-earth and completely without pretense. It's rare that I visit a bike shop and don't get any kind of attitude from the staff, but this is the exception. The prices could be better on some things, but they charge fair market value for all of their parts. The selection is good and most of the bikes are priced fairly. If you need service, these guys are great. I got the super tune-up on a bike I thought was about done and it's ridden like a dream for months now. You'll be well served to come here if you need service or parts. read more

I contracted COVID during the time I was supposed to get my bike. They did not call until the end of my time in isolation to tell me to "come get my bike they need the space." This was after I told them I had contracted it and was bed ridden. In poor taste. The only guy that I liked working there who was not like that is no longer there anymore.
