The store is clean and well stocked, but they seem to be allergic to having enough checkout lanes. Today I was 21st in line to pay -- I counted -- with only two registers open. They called for more baggers over the intercom, but I didn't need a bagger. I needed someone to hand money to. If this were are rare situation, I wouldn't have written. But it seems like the lines here are ludicrous no matter what day or time I try to shop. It's bad enough that this is now my last ditch effort store: I only come here whenever I haven't been able to find what I needed somewhere else first. Edit: I hate shopping at this store. Hate it, hate it, hate it. About every six months I'll give it another shot, but management still seems to loathe the idea of hiring enough people to work it. I'll try again in 2021 or so. read more

They used to be open 24hrs. Found out that its not the case any longer due to thieves stealing from the liquor isle during late hours. I met an angel today that worked in this safeway store named "LOUCELOUS"(I hope I did not mispelled his name). The Alameda Landing shopping center has added its supermarket with the recent opening of Safeway. This new store on the West End is the third Safeway in Alameda. Store is bright with nice wide aisles. The refrigerated cases has sleek frameless-looking doors. It has all the requisite departments such as meat, bakery, deli, pharmacy, and floral, all of which appeared to be well-staffed. Yep, there's a Starbucks there too. The aisle end caps by the registers appeared large making the area leading to the registers appears small. I usually self-check and they have six registers for self-checking. Nice! I don't know what this world is coming to. Nobody wants to do anything. The other day, I ordered a deli sandwich and the woman who made it ran off without a word as soon as she handed it to me. I had no idea what to do because I ordered a combo and didn't know how to get the remainder of my lunch together. There was no one else around so I had to flag down the guy at the next counter to come over. He rang me up and told me the soda machine was down so I could get a bottled beverage instead. He was nice enough. I also wanted prosciutto from the deli case so I asked another employee at the deli counter to slice some for me. She actually told me that she couldn't slice the prosciutto. How the hell are you supposed to buy prosciutto if the deli person doesn't slice it? The whole thing was very off putting. I ended up getting a sloppy wad of it, but at least I got what I needed. Despite this wacky behavior, the newness of the store, the wonderful bakery items and large variety of products will keep me coming back. However, I remain wary of having to interact with the staff and do not look forward to my next lunch experience here. read more

Excellent customer service. I grabbed a lavender softsoap retail price at $1.99 and it was $1 with club card. After inputting my club card number at the self check out. The hand soap was still $1.99. It didn't take off the $1. I asked for assistance and they went to go check the price tag. They came back and told me that the price tag didn't match the item so the hand soap was free. So I ended inly ended up paying for my spicy tuna roll from the deli and a free hand soap. I'm definitely going to be a regular here. read more

Please cook the rotisserie chicken! Every one I've gotten has been pink and slimy. The check out lines are usually very long, the aisle is blocked with those waiting. Bad design? Need more to bag groceries. Teach the cashiers how to void a transaction. The customer behind the customer being checked out, thought she was being checked out and paid the first customers items. The cashier didn't know how to void, and was about to reverse out all items and re-enter. It had already taken a while to get through her items. Very nice Safeway in the new mall. Wide aisles, fully stocked. In-store Starbucks and good bakery and deli. Helpful employees- a nice man at self check told me I could just pay a quarter for a cup of ice at the Starbucks when I didn't want to buy a huge bag of ice. Smiles and generous servings at the deli. This place is only going to get busier as they continue to build out the old naval station and the houses and condos continue to be built. Restaurants, shops, and a gym are in the shopping center. The patio is a great place to enjoy your drink or deli purchases, and the indoor seating is ample, comfortably appointed, and sunshine-filled. A big plus for Alameda. read more

God awful place. A young man with a riffle, wearing no mask, grilled me upon entering the store. He was wearing a "security" shirt black pants. Accosted me informing me that the store was closing. I informed him I knew what I was getting and would only be a moment. It wasn't 1 minute I was in the isle to get ice cream, following me he said " hurry up!" Aggressively. When I informed him I was looking for the item I came to the store for he came up to my face and told me aggressively, with his hand on his gun, "the store was closing.." Very much annoyed, came in at 11PM and the workers told us that the store is closed but the it had said here that they close at 1AM. We came back to our car and we waited, trying to find another place that were open for groceries but that's when we saw the workers letting other customers go through so im very much confused. I love this Safeway so much because of their Starbucks inside! This starbs location is my favorite one to go to just because it's spacious and not usually packed which is very rare for any Starbucks locations. It's honestly not a bad Safeway but during these COVID times, everyone is stressed out and taking it out on cashiers. The staff has always been nice to me but I also try not to go when the store is too busy. The prices aren't terribly high and if you get a Safeway card there's plenty of specials. But I just moved here this summer and my first time at this Safeway some young folks grabbed as much groceries as they could carry and ran out the store while a woman was screaming. I thought this part of Alameda was supposed to be safe lol. read more

This is a review for the amazing team in the bakery that saved my daughter's birthday! Marcela is a cake decorating angel! Being a procrastinator, I left my daughter's cake until the day before her party. I had called a few high end bakeries and they had quoted me $150+(with no horn or ears included!) Of course I wanted an elaborate unicorn cake for her unicorn themed party...but how? I set out on a mission the day before the party and after being turned away at three Safeway's, I resigned to going to Michael's and buying $50 worth of cake decorating tools to do it myself. To be clear, I have no training in cake decorating or frosting arts! The Michael's is next to a Safeway and I decided to go in and see if they would sell me two plain white cakes, so that I could get to work with my bag of frosting. The man at the counter was very kind and I showed him the picture of the cake I was looking to create. He laughed (a little too hard) when I explained that I would attempt to make it myself. He told me to wait there and wheeled out a unicorn cake that was essentially EXACTLY what I was looking for! I was so excited, and asked how much. He(and his co-worker) said it was someone else's cake, but the woman who created it was at lunch. I gave him my number and asked him to please have her call me. When I got outside the store, he called and told me that she was back and that I should come back. I ran back and Marcela told me that she was very busy, but saw the desperation in my eyes and agreed to make another unicorn (same day)! She is literally an angel and I am so thankful. She is incredibly talented and the cake was beautiful...and only $40! Thank you Marcela! You made my daughter so happy and you deserve more $$$ for the work you do! read more

Man I love these reviews - I think everyone is trying to keep this Safeway a hidden gem. It's huge, clean, has a better selection (and more in stock) than most Safeways, ample parking, friendly staff, and I love their produce section. Check out their bell pepper display and all the stuff the behind the glass. Produce section is pretty fancy. Large fish/meat deptartment and big bakery department. I came in here after work expecting to wait forever like my usual trips, but it wasn't very crowded and there was only 1 person in line in front of me at checkout. I bought a bunch of stuff and exchanged a leaky milk from another Safeway. No problems and staff was super friendly. I think they're still working out the kinks at this store because I heard employees talking about how they don't offer certain services yet. Right now there's ample parking and it's next to a non-crowded Safeway gas station, but I'm sure the zen won't last long and it will soon look like the zoo at South Shore. read more

This place is convenient, however run poorly. My first visit there, the checker humiliated me because the strip on my debit card had been used so much that it faded, so he refused to take my payment and told me to go to the bank across the way and get a new one. I did. It was just embarassing because he said it in front of everyone in line. Another time I went, it was around 11 am and the checker this time told me that they couldn't receive payment by debit atball because of a system upgrade. Okayyyy...I, as well as several other people in line, had carts full of food. They were told this at last minute, and had to put back their groceries if they were planning to pay by card (which the majority of people do these days!). Luckily I had a check on me (hella old school) and I wrote them a check for my groceries. Why would you do a system upgrade when you're open and/or during peak hours? Last weeks experience was somewhat comical. I had a cart full of groceries and was ready to check out. They had one checkstand open and it was a "15 items or less" one. I asked a worker in the checkstand next to the one that was open (she was restocking the candy) if I could pay in the one checkstand that was open. She looked at my cart and said no. Then I told her that no one else was open. She quickly realized and said yes. So...I stood in line. (For about 20 minutes.) When I finally got to the part where I could put my stuff on the conveyer belt the checker told me, "You're the last one." I kind of gave her a you've-got-to-be-kidding-me look. I told her that she was the only one open. She said that she was going to call for help. I literally watched her get on the loud speaker three times asking for someone else to come and open up...but alas, not one person came to her rescue. As she was ringing me up, more and more and more people were getting in line and puting their things on. She didn't seem too happy about that. Oh well. The worker was not friendly at all, and clearly was pissed that she was overworked, not getting a break, nor getting a response to her calls for help. Hopefully they can staff for more people so things like this don't happen anymore. read more

I have been followed almost immediately, I could tell I was being followed. So, so intersting Security guard keeps following me every time, when i am shopping at Safeway, Alameda. Eventhough I'd done nothing wrong. Maybe because I still had work clothes on or no make up. My house and job are close to the Safeway. Why do i need a car for shopping or dress up? Sometimes I can not find my items and I am wondering around a few times or just pick up something and put it back. It does not mean I am trying to still something. This is the most poorly managed Safeway I've ever encountered. Just this past Saturday afternoon they had two, that's right TWO, cashiers open. On the weekend on a busy shopping day!! Lines were 10-12 deep. It's consistently bad - they never staff properly, baggers are nowhere to be found, and baskets are always left in the parking lot instead of being gathered and stocked in front. Super happy when this Safeway opened up. Living on the waterfront in Oakland, this is actually the closest grocery store to me besides Lucky's. Since its opening though-- it's been my go-to stop for everyday eating. (that meal prep life doe) The groceries are usually pretty good deals (huge things of chicken breast for under $10?? HECK YEAH), the layout of inventory makes sense to me, and the employees are usually pretty friendly. The lines can get cray sometimes, but they make a bit of an effort to open up more lines when theres a crowd. Overall-- not as fancy (and expensive) as the higher end stores but it keeps my grocery budget in check and my meals prepped. Other perks include gas rewards ($.10 - .30 / gallon off!), and close locations to habit burger, in and out, AND Unleashed! (my puppy appreciates this). Pro-tip: remember to pay with a debit card NOT credit card if you want the cheapest gas prices they offer, and air and water is complimentary for safeway card holders. (: read more

Hello, Let me start by saying that I enjoy shopping at Safeway and I usually have a great experience. I visited Store 3281 on Sunday 2/28/2021, and this day wasn't so great. I made it to the check out, and the checker Iveth asked me to remove my mask. I was purchasing wine, and she wanted to verify my identity. I was in the store earlier in the week to purchase a bottle of wine, and wasn't asked to remove my mask. I asked Iveth why I had to remove my mask because it's putting me at risk for catching covid-19, and she said it was a store policy. I complied, so she can verify my identity. I was skeptical of this new policy, so I watched the other cashiers. I finally saw another customer purchasing alcohol in the next lane, I watched the transaction. The customer showed his ID, but wasn't asked to pulled his mask down to verify his identity. After the cashier (Richard) finished the transaction, I asked if there was a store policy fro customers to pull of their mask for ID verification. Richard said it was a policy, but he didn't ask because his manager wasn't there. As a customer, I began to get offended. I started to wonder if the color of my skin had anything to do with me being ask to take off my mask during a pandemic because the other customer was not African American. As a former employee in retail, I know you have to be consistent with policy. Especially if it's a policy that asking customers to put their health risk. Maybe you should even post a sign that let customers know that they'll be asked to remove their mask. Again, I really enjoy shopping at Safeway. I hope you can do a better job communicating the mask removal policy and be consistent in enforcing it. I would feel much better knowing everyone was risking their health, and not just some because "they look a certain way" or "fit a description". read more
