Worst customer service. I work late and usually shop here after 8:30pm. The employees here are rude and of no help.

I do not know what is happening at the Safeway store at Bell & Hwy. 49 in Auburn. Every time I shop the store has fallen into a further state of sloppiness. It does not seem to matter what time of day, the isles are now all crowded with cheap display that choke the isles down so 2 shopping carts can't pass. There is piles of merchandise stacked everywhere and it is all just cheap junk. It reminds me of a 3rd world market. The produce has gone from bad to worse- it looks like it has been thrown on the floor and then put on the shelf. I now see a lot of the regular employees have quit and gone to work at BriarPatch. I can't say I blame them- Briar Patch is a great market and where I have been shopping increasingly more since Safeway has dropped to bargain-basement class. Safeway- Get rid of the manager at Bell/Hwy. 49 and bring in someone who knows how to manage a store for God's sake. PLEASE! read more

Do not use their online pick up app what so ever. Apparently your "pick up time" you choose will actually be the time that the employees start your shopping. And no I'm not going based off of one experience. I have used this 4 times and each time I'm told the same thing "we are short today." I am normally very understanding of this issue considering I have had to deal with it myself but today was unacceptable. I put my order in yesterday at 11:45am to pick up my order at 7pm TODAY. That's over 12 hours that they would have had my order in their system. I get here at 6:59pm the day of my pick up and am told that since they are short my order is JUST NOW getting worked on. I was given the options to wait 15 mins (which actually turned into 30) or come back another day. I work 10 hour days. All I wanted to do was to pick up my groceries conveniently after work, I pre planned and gave way too much notice and my order could still not be ready on time. If they are THAT short on staffing then this service should not be offered at this location. I am calling out management at this point. Hire more employees or discontinue the service. Absolutely ridiculous. read more

Safeway in Auburn seems to have a problem with re-stocking. We have been shopping there for years, and for the last few months we have been having a hard time finding our favorite items, especially those in the Signature line. We have tried to speak to the store manager, but he (or she) seems to always be unavailable. What is going on? read more

I just wanted to say how impressed I was with the service I got from your grocer Devin last night. My daughter and I were doing our weekly shopping. I had not met Devin before, but saw him stocking vegetables and asked him about the new apple I heard about on the news, cosmic crisp. He said he had a damaged one in the back we could try. So he went back and found it and gave us a slice to test. Then he proceeded to tell us about the other types of apples and the nuances of the different varieties. He went out of his way to help us and to share his knowledge of his profession. I was very impressed with Devin. read more

Want a sandwich for lunch? Don't go to Safeway on your lunch break! Went in to get a Roast Beef sammich on a french roll.... apparently its too much to ask. They ran out of several breads.... only had dutch crust (tears up your mouth), or a cheese bread...... IT'S A DAMN GROCERY STORE!!!! GO OVER TO AISLE 3 AND GET SOME DAMN FRENCH ROLLS!!! Or........ how bout putting up a sign that says that you're incompetent and ran out of french bread so people don't stand in line for 15 minutes of their lunch break wasting their time. Meh. If not for the free entertainment of the parking lot, I'm unsure if I would really bother with Safeway. The parking lot is a fun mix of the Not-Quite-Affluent-Enough-to-Shop-BelAir-Bourgeois, local North Auburn Douchebags-in-Dodge-Diesels, Hustlers from The Greens Hustling for The Green and Dudes-Over-14-with-a-Backpack-and-Riding-a-Bike. Just another day in North Auburn. Just another retailer @ Bell and 49. Meh. Be prepared to bring coupons. Prices aren't all that much less than BelAir despite the aforementioned parking lot floor show. Never pay full price; its always too much until on sale. Fat guy (his words NOT mine) who often works the self-checkout line should self-check himself sometime. He is neither jolly, friendly or particularly helpful for a fat dude. In fact, his loud voice is as grating as having a house full of RaiderNation d'bags in front of your new flat screen jumping up and down while shouting out armchair glory calls and splashing cheese whiz onto the rug. THAT grating. So....Meh with a Capitol 'M' but lower case 'eh'. Where people who used to shop at Grocery Outlet go after getting a job and/or buying a 50 cents on the dollar EBT card from the guy with a backpack on a bike in the parking lot. read more

On 2 occasions now I have purchased wine that rings up for more than the advertised price. It has probably happened more often and with other items as well, but the wine was something that I noticed and corrected wile checking out. After the first time, I started taking pictures with my phone of the price tags and sure enough it has already come in handy. It makes me wonder how much I'm being overcharged on everything else. read more

Accompanied my wife in the store while she shopped for organic groceries for a 2 week raw foods diet shes putting me on. My 4 star rating has nothing to do with my apprehension. I needed to get a few office supplies and thought they may have a school supplies section as so I wouldn't have to drive to staples. They did have a few supplies but it was _super_ basic. Pens and tape basically. I needed a binder and pencil holder. So no luck there. Their organic foods section was small, but not complaining there. Could have had to travel into Roseville for WholeFoods or Walmart. And they stock the classic vegan-friendly items-- Organic milk alternatives, tofu, Earth Balance, etc. I know my wife comes here often. Nice to have a good grocery near home so not always having to travel into Roseville. read more

The crAziest grocery store in town. It always seems as if they only have two or three registers open, no matter the time Or day. Every time I feel like I stand in line longer than it takes to Shop. Seriously Safeway?! I think we need to break up, I love the items you sell but this location is becoming increasingly difficult to check out! I have been holding off on writing this for hopes that the EXTREMELY long lines were just a rare occurrence, but after visiting several times over the last month, it's become the norm! It's outrageous how long the lines are at all hours of the day, is this a staffing issue or what? There are lines at all stations, the deli sandwich line is never short of at least 5 people waiting in line. The employees are friendly but the check out lanes are ridiculous! I'm a fan of self checkout but even there people are waiting!!! Between 5 and 10 in line...you do realize your next door competition has an A-Frame in their entrance that says "blazing fast check out" and they are living up to it! read more

Josh in the sandwich area...great service! I gave him a big order of 6 breakfast burritos and he took his time and didn't rush, and made them better than anybody else I've seen make them. Every time I go to other Safeways, they always rush and aren't very friendly. Josh showed great service and was very nice despite my large order and it being 4th of July. Thanks Josh! read more

I recently had a non fault issue regarding service at my store regarding a coupon. Upon arriving home, I sent feedback thru my phone app and received an email reply the next day from corporate. Unfortunately, it was not quite the response I wanted. In short, it stated that corporate-wise " they were unable to assist / accommodate me.....contact local store, etc., etc." I decided "oh well +" to let it be. To my surprise, several hours after receiving corporate's email, I received a call from the Asst. Manager C who had also received my initial inquiry. She called to apologize for the inconvenience - to which I explained, it wasn't necessary as, neither of us were at fault - and to rectify the issue. She honored my coupon. To date, I've had five issues with this store; of which, three were my error. Each time store personnel has instructed / corrected me and or accommodated me. I love this store and rarely shop anywhere else for THAT very reason!!! Needless to say, the store was not in any way responsible for the issue and the accommodation provided to me was minimal; but it is just the service and caring that keeps me coming back. read more

I just have to say that with all the bad service you hear about, Safeway is so good at service. Tonight I bought a 6 pack of beer and as I was loading it to my car the bottom fell out and the bottles shattered everywhere. The service manager helped me out and replaced it. Been shopping at this Safeway for years and years. They are using this Covid excuse to not take returns ...even with the receipt on packaged items (didn't try to return any perishables). Our personal shopper got us all sorts of wrong items tried to return and the lady "head clerk" with the long hair came up and rudely told my very nice husband that they weren't taking returns because they were to busy. Today still no name brand items and trying to pawn off inferior gross frozen chicken. NO body wants that crummy chicken! The girl produce clerk is RUDE I laid a bag of rotten lemons on the cart near her and told her they were rotten ...nicely and she just took them and pitched them aside and didn't say a word. Covid 19 and basic health standards not followed. Just got some Ceviche at the meat counter in the back. The counter person wore NO gloves, mask or hair net. Left his cooties on a metal spoon in the counter. Another tall (employee ?) in regular clothes and NO nets, mask or gloves BSing with customers goes in the back and comes out with a bucket and puts it in the customers baskets. Upon checking out he was helping someone in the self check out line passing on his germs. read more

There are many things to complain about this location. But a recent change at this store really upsets me. They make several different types of bagels in their bakery and recently stopped carrying individual packets of cream cheese. So if you want cream cheese for your bagel you'll have to buy huge tub. What a stupid decision. Just lost a regular customer for any grocery store need. read more

10 people in line at 8pm tonight and ONE CHECKSTAND WITH A CHECKER THAT PAGED FOR HELP AND NOBODY CAME! I couldn't remember why I didn't go to this store for so long but I was buying shoes in the same strip mall so I stopped in for about 1/3 cart full of groceries. BEN the evening manager was paged twice by the checker who I won't mention her name because she was doing all she could, BEN never came. Finally..hey...what's that? Another checker appears(JAKE) he surveys the scene, picks out the person in line that's an off duty employee, takes her to another checkstand, doesn't announce he's open, checks her out and closes. WHAT THE HECK? After waiting for 15 minutes in line I was able to catch JAKE and ask him why he never announced he was open. (Yes at this point I was pissed having had chemo yesterday and feeling like crap)Jakes response was "BEN wants everyone stocking, I have to put away more frozen goods." I asked why he checked out the one lady and closed and he got all sarcastic and said something about he doesn't do the schedule and "she works here." WELL JAKE..I work at a local trauma center and if the public for one minute thought we treat employees differently, or in this case better than anybody else we would be shut down! What a horrible experience. So hard to say because I'm a union person to the core but yes, I have had much better service at Walmart and Target. Sad day when a union worker with bennies and decent pay who's picket line I've supported acts so flippantly to a customer. Won't be back, I'll spend a few pennies more and hit up Raleys. read more

Today I took my 84 year old grandfather shopping there. After spending a few hours filling the basket with all the items on the shopping list we were finally ready to check out. After the items were all scanned and bagged my grandfather wrote a check for the $295 and change for the total of the groceries. The cashier took the check and another checker appeared and there was some sort of an issue with the check. We were informed that they were unable to take a check over $125 per store policy as he hasn't written over 10 checks at Safeway. They were not apologetic and offered no other solution except my grandpa could pay with a debit or credit card both of which he does my have . I asked if they could just split it into 3 transactions and he could write 3 checks, no they said. Only a debit or credit card would work. My grandpa told them he had lived in Auburn his entire life and has shopped at safeway numerous times over the years and couldn't fathom why they wouldn't take his payment. I decided to pay for it and have him reimburse me because we had just spent the last 2 1/2 hours shopping and checking out and if I had more time I would have just told them to blank off and have fun putting all the items away, but I didn't want to have to start the process off at another store. I had a few things I was going to purchase that were actually really well priced but I told them I didn't want it and would no longer be shopping there. They never made any apologies and didn't really seem to care. My grandpa also asked to speak to a manager and a few minutes later this young guy appeared who was the "assistant manager" we told him our issue and he reiterated that it was " store policy" and I asked how on earth is anyone able to purchase anything if they only have a check. He then said they could have "called in to authorize it" which was never offered to us. He then said he guessed he needed to train his employees that were unaware of that option. I then told him "yes you better " It was the worst grocery shopping experience of my life. Here is my 84 year old grandfather spending his hard earned money to pay your paycheck so you have a job and you treat us like we are criminals and have done something wrong?! Seriously ?! I don't understand how a business can survive with treating its customers so poorly and rudely. On another note the original cashier and the girl bagger had the personality of a lamp no smiles, did you find everything alright, how are you, no pleasantries whatsoever were offered by their employees. Bel-air/raleys will definitely be receiving our business in the future as they have always been 100% friendly, courteous and been always helpful. read more

Thank you Forgetting back to me I didn't mean to smash Safeway but it is not very good the beef is horrible sushi better eat it that day deli sandwich Raleys has two delis what is their gourmet which has 10 different kinds of breads 10 different kinds of cheeses at 799 and then the other side which is a regular deli is excellent they also have a cold deli which sandwiches you can't believe they have Chile Riano's that are already premade every day and just ready for you to buy and take home if you don't believe me please go and check out Raleys compared to Safeway and prices and if you don't believe me please go into Raleys and compare between Safeway and really unfortunately last year Christmas time I wanted a prime rib roast and I was not happy with your meat it's horrible I bought a market steak took two bites and threw it away it was so bad and I do you know about butcher shops my generations of my family have owned this butcher shop in Switzerland and it's famous that has roads that are named after it so yes I do know I do know my sushi really sushi you get a dragon roll it's about 1215 pieces and that's the one with the really thin avocado on top and it's 899 you can't get that up at Safeway edit Safeway if you buy your sushi eat it that day because if you don't eat it within a day Throw it away if you buy that Raleys get that home you could have it for what the term a couple days unfortunately this year I was going to buy a prime rib Brotz I checked Safeway and the prime rib for 8 pounds was I don't know 270 something dollars and I compared to Raleys and I could get a 16 pound here for $150 really I knew what is good Safeway not sure thank you and thank you for inviting me if you do yes as I said do comparison-shop shopping and in the freshness of their foods I just talk to Safeway gets back because that still has where's my go to store for 50 years read more

I like Safeway a lot always have and this one is just as good as any other. The employees are friendly. Once I was looking for a good watermelon and didn't know what I was looking for and a woman who worked here had taught me how to find the best watermelons and she was awesome. Best watermelon i had in a long time too. The guys behind the meat bar are always helpful. I've never ran into a rude employee and hope to never have to. I shop here almost every week because the customer service is good. and it's close to where I live. read more

Safeway is SOOOO much cheaper than Belair it's ridiculous! The coupons that you load on to your card are a pain however, but the savings makes it tolerable! The head cashier (Kari?) was rude and impatient! I coulda lived without her attitude! read more

Horrible customer service. Long lines no matter what time you are shopping. They never have enough checkers or courtesy clerks. Poor management. This store is right in the area of many homeless who like to visit the self serve hot food counter and help themselves. On the positive, very large and great selection in floral department. Very large frozen food section. Large gift card selection. Best in Auburn for that. read more

First time going and it was very pleasant. The staff were very friendly, especially Leslie. They could expand their organic selection, bulk options like whole foods and enforce the "no loitering rule", but other than that I couldn't offer anyway to improve. I love this store. I really liked the one near my old apartment because of their huge selection of organics, so I was a little hesitant when I went here, but I was pleasantly surprised. This store is even bigger than your average store with plenty of selection. I will be returning for my all groceries for now on. read more

If I were to give a no star rating, Safeway would be at the top of my list! This store has just gone downhill over the past few years. Management of this store is terrible! The Starbucks inside is less than exceptionally terrible. Their coffee always seems to be more like water than an actual caffeinated beverage, their coffee machines always seem to break down or underperform and their service is just absolutely appalling! Their tables, chairs, sofas and floor always seem to be underattended and are therefore always stained with food and coffee spills, a disastrous sight to see and feel!! The worst is their restrooms which always seem to let out a horrendous stench and are always closed due to clogged toilets or urine and feces on the floor and toilets! To conclude, this establishment as well as the underperforming management running it is unworthy of the name Safeway and the loyal customers who continuesly shop there hoping for a better experience and satisfying products. read more

The best thing about the store is the sushi, there is a sushi chef that makes the best California rolls. I have them make them because I like soy wrapped instead of seaweed. The sandwiches that they make at the deli department are great too. You can have them make the sandwich the way you want. Fresh items. There is a long line come lunch time. read more
