Staff is slow and there's always an extremely long line that takes forever. The prices are INSANE. I think for a lot of items, whole foods is cheaper-which is CRAZY!!! It's unorganized and honestly, again, just stupidly expensive for what you're getting. Save yourself the time and find any other grocery store. I popped into Safeway recently after hanging in Canton for a bit. I roamed the aisles getting the items I needed, but some I didn't go for because they were exorbitantly priced. The issues started at self-checkout. I wanted to remove an item, but that required customer assistance. There were 4 (not 1, not 2, not 3, BUT 4) Safeway employees standing nearby and NOT ONE OF THEM even looked in my direction. I stayed in place for a while before getting frustrated and decided to leave all the things right at self-checkout. However, self-checkout is blocked in...and so are other areas in this store. As I was attempting an exit near the front of the store, something beeped at me when I approached some mechanical arms. Eventually the arms opened and I was able to leave, but what is even going on at this grocery store??? Really glad I don't live in Canton because I wouldn't want this to be one of my primary stores. read more

I love this store. I do most of my grocery shopping on line. However, I will not allow some random shopper pick my fruit, vegetables, meat, cheese, or deli. The fresh fruit and vegetable selection at Safeway Boston St. is as good as it gets in Baltimore. The area is kept clean and orderly. It's easy to find what you need. In the meat department, there is a wide selection of bacon, pork, chicken, beef, and deli. I don't eat much fish, and when I do it is outside my house. The baked goods department offers a wide selection of freshly baked and packaged goods. Cashiers are typically friendly and the self-checkout staff is typically responsive. Parking is plentiful. I feel good when I leave. I live in Mount Vernon. Boston Street is out of my way, but Safeway is worth the trip. read more

this Safeway has a quick, responsive pharmacy with staff. We're happy to answer questions, and get dropped off prescriptions prepared faster than most other places I've tried, including Harris Teeter, nearby, or Costco. They have a well-maintained produce section with a good variety, diverse frozen, and dry goods section, and when I have picked up fish or steaks from here, they have been delicious. The only downside I have run into is the recently installed electronic gate system, which I suppose is a reason reasonable but inconvenient response to Baltimore cities's choice not to enforce anti-shoplifting laws or support stores efforts to do so with security. read more

The only reason I can't get five stars is apparently the same reason that most people are giving one stars on their reviews. Safeway at this location is clearly transitioning to more self checkout and less staff. Personally, I am not a huge fan of that because I think as a large corporation they should make more of an effort to employ Humans in the downtown area. Also as some of the negative reviews comment, when the store gets busy and people are using self check out for large carts of groceries, it really creates long delays. They have bags at times but at some reviewer's have noted there have been times they have not. Baltimore city has put restrictions on grocery bags although I don't really understand the details since target still gives plastic bags somehow... Maybe they get away with it because they don't just sell groceries? At the very least they should have more paper bags. But also the self checkout lanes don't have enough surface area when you're bagging large amounts of groceries, exacerbating the delay, when people divert to self check out because of the lack of Adequate staff checkout lanes. Aside from the checkout process this is a very good Safeway. They have tons of produce, tons of meat, selections, a good bakery, and an excellent deli. The package goods are plentiful, and the store is always clean and well stocked. I would recommend bringing your own reusable bags, especially if you plan to use self check out, and as long as you prepare for that And pay attention to the lines when you walk in, you won't be surprised if you have to wait a little bit. read more

I felt a little uneasy about placing a catering order for our staff meeting, but the experience I had at this location was truly exceptional. Ms. Dorothy and Ms. Marlene made sure I understood the ordering process and they did a fabulous job with our sandwich trays, fruit trays and chicken. The staff raved about the quality of the food and wanted the information so they could order from Safeway for their own future events. All of the employees I encountered were friendly and helpful. I asked one gentleman who was putting up fruit to help me and he immediately stopped what he was doing and helped me put my order in the car. They made a sometimes frustrating job of getting the food by myself, into one of the most pleasant experiences I have had in a long time. I've been going to this Safeway for 8.5 years and know it inside and out! The staff is very friendly and they have tons of options including precut veggies and fruit and the meat selection is great. My biggest complaint is the lack of staff for check out. Yes there is self check-out which is great but when you have a whole cart full, it's better to go to a person and every time no matter what time of day, there is always a line to check out. I do most of my shopping on the weekend as do a lot of people so I can't figure out why they can't schedule more staff on the registers when there are more patrons. Seeing only 1-2 cashiers working every time is ridiculous. read more

Regrettably I am unable to travel very far, so I go to my nearest grocery store. Unfortunately, my closest grocery store is the Safeway on Boston Street in the Canton area of Baltimore. While their selection and variety of goods are fine; their prices and particularly their customer service go without appreciation. While I can understand that a number of forces can affect prices, I do not understand why they would retain individuals who are not fit to serve the public. They even indulge one (known) employee that is allowed to choose which customers she is willing to serve. I've had several occasions in which I had to wait in line while the attending cashier sought another employee to wait on me. This not only caused me an unnecessary delay, but also the unfortunate people behind me in line. I've heard people call her Tonya. Apparently, she is a longtime employee there. I've made a number of complaints to management about her, but that hasn't affected any change. I would be remiss not to acknowledge that there are several very good employees there. Yet; as the saying goes, "It Only Takes A few Bad Apples." If you go to that store you would be better off asking another customer for help. After that, use the self-check out scanners. Try anything not to brush against employees who treat as an annoyance. read more

I have been going to safeway since my mom started working there. Safeway in hawaii actually is on the more expensive side but here in baltimore i noticed there prices are probably more cheaper compared with harris, whole foods, etc. the workers at this safeway are the best! Very friendly and helpful. Unfortunately like what others stated, there seems to be understaffed as there are rarely any cashiers. The organization of the store is very easy to navigate. The produce section is not the best. Sometimes the produce isnt good enough to eat and would not buy it. There are other sections where the items are not stocked. The selection of food healthier options is less comparable to sprouts and whole foods. I think Safeway is a good place to get your ordinary groceries if you are looking for an economical choice! read more

Grabbed a pound of salmon yesterday. Went home and unwrapped it to cook right away and there was a fly embedded in it. Not quite sure as to why this Safeway has such a low rating. My only qualm is the prices... cento tomatoes for nearly 5 dollars when they are a mere 1.50 elsewhere.. this is simply one example... Flowers are great, produce quality is great, store is clean and appears to be run well. Chicken is rubbery..., otherwise meats are good and reasonably priced. This place has turned into a big wart. Think of a big wart on your rear-end, and every time you have to sit down, you have to bear that pain in the ass. Safeway should change it's name to asspainway. Nobody does anything, and the one cashier they have is a useless lazy God knows what. Not sure why this Safeway's rating is so low! This is my go to store in the city to get groceries. It is safe, there's always convenient parking, staff is friendly and there are always plenty of options to choose from. I usually go during the week in the evening to avoid large weekend crowds. I have found a shortage of shopping carts inside the store on the weekends. TIP: Make sure to use the Safeway savings card. You will save if you watch out for offers. read more

What's holding me back from giving this Safeway more stars is the atrocious bike parking. There are plenty of bike lanes leading to this Safeway, but only a dinky elementary-school style bike rack that is too close to the wall making it entirely inoperable. Safeway--please install proper bike parking facilities at your store (staple-style racks) that allow people with all types of bikes including cargo bikes to use your store. Where I grow up Safeway were at the time the only grocery store around. Just as a flash back to my youth when I'm in a state that has Safeway, I have the need to check them out. This one was a rather large one. Much larger then the ones I remember from Northern California. It had everything in it. As you enter the beautiful arrangement of flowers. Then a decent size Starbucks, where I got a cup of tea. The produce section was great. Loved the arrangement of the different grapes on sale! The best part of Safeway visits are the bakery section. I love the muffins they bake. Couldn't pass nine for $6.00 with my club card which is at least 30 years old! Lastly I really appreciate their no question return policy. As far as Safeway's go I like this location a good amount. It's been weird adjusting to the layout seeing as I recently switched to this store over another but I like this one way more. I never really see anything out of place and everything is usually pretty organized with the staff constantly stocking things. I think since it's a smaller store it doesn't ever feel so hectic inside which is refreshing. Long story short, going to continue to pick up my ice cream, apple juice and frozen pizzas from this Safeway for a while. read more

I've shopped at the Safeway chain since I was a kid. Safeway has definitely improved over the decades. However, I've always preferred to shop elsewhere if possible. The Canton Safeway isn't an exception. I'll go there if the convenience outweighs the desire to go s.hop at a competitor. The weird thing is, I can't pinpoint why I have these feelings...It's not that Safeway is dirty or lacks selection...because the Canton Safeway is certainly a nice place. Been coming here for a couple years now. It's always busy and seems to be pretty understaffed. DO NOT Get the sushi here. It's pretty bad and equivalent of gas station sushi. Especially the brown rice ones. The rice tastes like glue. The departments all have the basic items... pretty much no speciality items here. The parking lot is crazy in the evening and during the winter if there is even the slightest hint of a snow storm... the place is a mad house. I've never seen shelves at a grocery store stripped completely clean of bread and water. lol Like absolutely NOTHING left. Crazy Also there is the usual person that has 2989238 items almost always in the express line or self check out. I would say go here either late at night or early as you can in the morning. Lastly, they tow like hell out of the parking lot here. I cant count how many times I've seen cars get towed out of there when the FieldHouse was next door. Also, they tow during lunch. So if you're parking there headed over to Subway or Chiptole.... make it quick. read more

The only reason, I'd go to this Safeway location is because of convenience. I live pretty close to it and it does offer most, not all, of the goods you'd expect at a standard grocery store. The downfall is that they are understaffed during the later hours. Hence, extremely long check out lines. This is also true for the self check out machines, because it always seems that one or two of those machines are malfunctioning every time I'm there. Another issue is that Safeway doesn't restock their goods in a timely matter. This is especially true for the salads sections. Most times, there is only a small selection left with expiration dates looming very near in the future. read more

I've been shopping at this Safeway since I moved to Fells Point in '98. I think I may have shopped there for the last time today. My major issue is not with the products in the store, although Wholefoods and Harris Teeter both have better produce, meat, and deli sections. My major issue is the lack of checkout staff. The past two times I've gone there, all that was open was the self checkout. Self checkout is fine if you have a couple of items and no produce, but for a larger order, it absolutely sucks. If this store cannot hire at least one person to work a checkout aisle, then I will be shopping elsewhere. read more

I'm not loaded or anything, but would gladly pay whatever markup exists by avoiding this store. This is the most convenient supermarket to me, and probably the best priced as well, but you won't catch me in here unless I absolutely can't find what I need elsewhere. It is dirty (I've heard tell of rat droppings and nibbled packages of chips and crackers), the customer service is wayyy below average, I always end up with expired food or stuff that goes bad far too quickly and there are ALWAYS the longest lines, because they refuse to properly staff the checkouts. When you have an issue (which happens fairly frequently, check your recipes, folks, you're probably overpaying for that sale item you snatched up!), there is no one at customer service and you wait what seems like forever before someone strolls over to try and help you. Save yourself the headache and go to Harris Teeter. read more

Best way to describe Safeway if you're from the New England area is that it's essentially a typical chain grocery store similar to a Shaws or Stop & Shop. I have to say the people are a lot happier and peppier, but maybe it's just the general warming southern hospitality. You can find your typical grocery store items although they don't have liquor, not quite sure it's due to a law vs just not having liquor at the grocery store as some just don't. It seems they do events at their grocery stores with local sports teams, ect which is pretty cool. I feel like chain grocery prices vary but essentially are the same, with certain deals on certain items with the grocery store discount cards accommodating with the average living income costs. read more

I LOATHE this place. Every time I go I swear I never will again. Tonight this was validated and confirmed. Their selection is sub par. It's like an over sized wawa, they have really no specialty items, and a serious lack of items that are in every basic grocery store. Their produce is terrible, many times they are out of basic things or it is old and you don't want to buy it. I went in for popcorn kernels tonight, what grocery store seriously does not sell popcorn kernels? Thankfully they do have a massive gift card center, one so large in fact it takes up half an aisle on both sides. Actually, to make room for this monstrosity, they likely got rid of popcorn kernels and other necessary items like trash bags or milk and eggs. They do also have a really nice fresh flower section, which you might need when your pregnant wife sends you to the store for chocolate and they are out of it. I did notice that they finally put in an extra lane for self check out being that they typically have maybe 1 or 2 registers open aside from these, so that will be helpful. Now the line will only be 3/4 down the cereal aisle instead of the whole way down. And then there is the parking situation. They have a huge parking lot but people only really park in the front because that is closest to the entrance. Tow trucks sit in the back and tow if they see anyone leaving the Safeway parking lot so don't dare park there and go somewhere else. Safeway is a neighborhood friendly store and makes sure to accommodate the lack of parking in the area by sitting a tow truck in a massive empty back lot just in case anyone even thinks for a second they might want to grab a beer at the Stackhouse after a stressful annoying trip at their store where they can't find anything because they don't stock it and then wait in line for 15 minutes to pay for the couple items they have. Basically, whoever owns this store is a marketing genius. I got a coupon in the mail the other day for $15 off a purchase of $50 and I noticed some signs tonight about a "grand re-opening". Not a chance Safeway-Canton, and I hope that you are scared for Harris Teeter to show up, and you should be. Dear Safeway, The other day, at your store in Canton, Baltimore, MD, I wanted to pick up some of your Tuscan Tomato Soup at lunchtime. Unfortunately, a female employee was sitting on all the soup, talking in a low conspiratorial voice to a male employee, across two carts of large boxes. The woman glared at me so I decided to wait until they were done their confab before I got my soup. I wandered aimlessly, came back to the soup case, and they glared at me again. Moving towards the soup, I said "Excuse me." The female employee gave me a glare so vicious I thought she might put my eyes out, so I said "Can I get some soup?" She slowly, slowly moved her butt off my lunch and I realized--and said, "You know what, I don't really want soup that someone put their ass on, and furthermore you didn't need to stare at me like that." I had had it with the Safeway Canton. Innocently, she says, "Whaaa? I didn't HEAR you." Her boyfriend jumps in "We're STOCKING." Clearly, for the past ten minutes of googoo eyes over empty boxes, they'd been stocking! This is a grocery with no one ever manning the customer service desk, a grocery store with wildly varying stock, inflated prices, and horrible produce, a grocery store that tows people from its vast and empty lot after one hour and fifty nine minutes (which is hilarious since it's impossible, on a large shopping trip, to get out of there in that time, since there's only ever one checker on duty.) I have witnessed lines at the SELF checkout of up to twenty people. I have gotten ROTTEN food from the "fresh case." I have been sneered at by employees. I HAVE HAD EMPLOYEES PUT THEIR ASSES ON MY SOUP. So you'll forgive me if I do not want to shop there any more; it's actually easier to drive to Whole Foods, since the parking situation (at meters!) is actually better, the employees are nice, the place is actually clean, the prices are lower (!), and you don't feel like you're going to get knifed by a stock girl if you use the bathroom--which at Safeway Canton, I might add, is dirty, dirty, dirty. (The cleaner of the bathroom leaves her mop and bucket propping open the door all day long, though there's never an actual cleaner in sight, and it's never clean--I wonder if she's in the back making out with the butcher, putting their asses on the steaks?) I am sending this to the Great Safeway Corporate In The Sky in the hopes that this very convenient grocery store with a lot of potential will clean up its act so I can return. (Honestly, how hard is it to find decent employees in this economy? This has to be a failure of management, and I suggest Safeway Corporate read Yelp! once in a while if they're evaluating stores--unless they just don't give a damn, like the employees and management of this particular Safeway. They say it starts from the top...) Until I hear otherwise, it's Whole Foods for me. Just because this Safeway is in an urban food desert doesn't mean they can abuse their customers with substandard service and absurd prices, even if they're incompetent or evil. Even when I was put off by the place, I went there, 'cause I was a captive audience--but asses on the soup and the girl who looked like she literally wanted to murder me kind of turned me off. Always have to wait in long lines. Really, what is the point of having 20 checkouts when only 5 are ever open? People working in the deli are RUDE. Pricey. Pretty clean and usually well-stocked. I strongly suggest shopping at The Markets at Highlandtown (Great Valu). Not as clean and well-stocked but it is so cheap and there are never long lines. This is the "Gucci" Safeway. It's filled with the Canton crowd browsing the relatively small aisles looking for organic produce and/or a date. It's in the same parking lot as the Can Company, and, well, it's in Canton, so most of the clientelle is pretty young, but sometimes you get older folks with missing teeth whose children have heroin habits. They really bring down the prettiness level, which is astoundingly high for a grocery store. read more
