I stop by this location from time to time. I shop and get a chai tea latte and Madeline cookies on my way out the door. The store is clean and well stocked. They do have a security gate at the entrance and at the self checkout stands. The employees that helped me were very professional. This is my go to Safeway when I'm in the pg county area, nice and convenient. My serving stop in the store is the discount shelf located in the rear of the store by the diary, normally lots of different discounted items including baked breads and sweets. They have a Starbucks inside this locations which I love, they tend to get busy so the do run out of items quicker than other locations. read more

Well I rarely go to check out with a checker but I had lots of stuff and was tired. I must say while I know it's a tough job, really it is, she didn't say a word to me when I spoke to her. Do not shop at this Safeway. The store manager, JEN, actively discriminates against and harasses customers with injuries and disabilities. Today, June 5, 2026 between 8:45 - 9:05 PM EST, Manager Jen was zooming through the store with her cart and hit me and my items with this cart. I told her, "Your cart just physically touched me." And she shouted sarcastically, "I'm soo sorrry, I'm soo sorry" and made a face of pretend pity at me. She then began laughing with a customer saying "She's not blind! She saw me coming!" And began laughing with the customer, the customer also began laughing as well. After I explained I couldn't move quickly due to an ankle injury, Manager Jen rolled her eyes, began looking around to the customers and spinning her finger around her head motioning that I was 'crazy' to staff and customers. Customers began laughing with her. She then tried to weaponize the police against me after I asked staff for her information by telling the staff to call the police. When she realized she had no claim to misuse the police, she left and had a male staff walk her out to insist that I had intentions of being in close proximity, although she was the one that hit me with her cart. As a barred attorney and former political official in the county who is now in contact with Albertson's (Safeway's parent company), a formal internal, and external complaint is in process with corporate and external public entities that handle the legal ramifications related to this matter. Safeway corporate needs to terminate this manager immediately for creating a hostile environment and exposing this location to massive legal liability. This will be handled. Additionally, when you sift through these reviews, you can see that I am not the first to complain about this manager. Ever since this store has been under Jen's management, the quality has declined. My father has gone to the store and has selected "cash back" and workers have taken his cash back instead of handing it to him. When he went back to the store, management claimed that this did not occur, until the worker finally admitted that he took the money. No ramifications or manager correction took place. Manager Jen needs to be fired and I will be filing the relevant complaints. read more

I went to Safeway in Fairwood to pick up a few items. I was very disappointed to see many food items had expired. It is my hope that management takes better care of the store and that food is removed if expired over a month ago. The item was bread . In addition, some boxed items on shelves were expired as well. FOR GAS STATION ONLY! I actually like the grocery store. I know where everything is at and I can usually find what I need. Lately I've been going to Lidl, but I still like Safeway for the things they don't have. What is frustrating to me is the Gas Station. I don't know why, but even when I don't have savings from shopping at Safeway I still gas up here. But 80% of the time I CANNOT get my receipt at the pump. I don't know what's so hard about replacing the paper at the pumps. I like to pay at the pump and print my receipt to track fuel. WHY can't I get my receipt at the pump?! read more

Clean store that is not usually busy since it's in a drive only area. I was shocked to find a book of coupons but hey I guess it's that time of the year again when everything is on sale. Today, I visited the seafood dept to purchase a few pounds of cluster crab legs. After my purchase I asked the woman whose name begins with a T if she had dungeness crabs. This store sucks!!! I ordered groceries online several times ,and on 2 occasions I received items that were stale. I use the delivery service, because sometimes it's convenient when I can't make it to the store , but enough is enough. Yesterday (July 27th) I received milk that was 12 days past the "sell by" date(July 15th). The sell by date lets the store know when to take it off the shelf. However, even when unopened it's still recommended only 7 days past that & this was freaking 12!! I have called the store in the past, about other items and was placed on hold for long periods of time, only for someone to finally pick up and slam phone down. I like Safeway, however I will never order online again, since I can't change the store that delivers to my home. I will continue to shop in person, at the store located on Crain Hwy. in Upper Marlboro!They never disappoint, however the Fairwood store sucks!!! read more

Yesterday, I had a disappointing experience at Safeway in Fairwood. While outside the store, I encountered an individual who did not appear to be an employee. He was making offensive remarks repeatedly, and I asked him to stop. Later, while inside the store, another person approached me and asked if I had said something to their coworker. I explained what had happened, but we couldn't agree on what was actually said. The situation escalated, with the individual confronting me and my family. Also the lady (the man's coworker )helped to escalate the matter further as well. The store employees gathered around, and I was asked to leave. This incident, coupled with the overall unprofessionalism, incompetence, and disorganization at this location, has left me with a negative impression. As a result, I have decided not to return to this Safeway location in Fairwood. I plan to reach out to the district manager to share my experience and concerns. read more

Thank God for Wegmans! I love that Wegmans is clean, well stocked, reasonably priced, and always has many checkout lanes open. Wegmans has high quality in-store made products, great seafood, local favorites, great prices on daily staples, and regional specialty items. The staff at Wegmans are professional and unfailingly courteous. I know this review is for the Fairwood Safeway but a man can dream that when this store is shuttered that the grocery store gods will replace it with a new shiny Wegmans. My dreams are being deferred because of this personification of tomfoolery writ large as a grocery "store". Save your blood pressure, and hard earned coins, and drive the 6.9 miles to Wegmans. Or do not even eat. If you must come to this "store", you have been warned, you have no one to blame but yourself for all the horrors that will be inflicted upon you. Safeway corporate, have you actually shopped in this "store?" If you had you would not allow there to routinely be only one or two checkout lanes open even though the lines are snaking back into the aisles. If you ever entered this "store" you would have noticed the off-putting smells emanating from the butchery and fishmonger sections. Like old fetid meat turning rancid in the display cases. Have you circumnavigated the aisles with the overflowing end caps and displays that are purposefully placed in the aisles causing beltway like cart pile-ups? Have you used the dirty carts and actually seen the filth as I have? Have you had the gross experience of going into the disgusting restrooms that have me recollecting fondly upon more pleasant facilities at rundown gas stations and dive bars? I see the bathroom check lists with initials that indicated the time and date it was cleaned and inspected, but I know those are damn lies or, to be more optimistic, merely aspirational goals. Have you compared the highway robbery prices of your subpar products to any other superior competitor products with their lower prices for superior goods? If so, you would be ashamed. Just like I am ashamed that I am even admitting, on Yelp no less, to having gone into this place on multiple occasions for the convenience. Surely, you have seen the old rotting fruit that is both highly priced and underwhelmingly appealing as displayed. Would that the only reason you resorted to stocking grade B fruit was to compete with a low budget corner bodega that was stealing your customers by undercutting your prices on the same grade B fruit. That I could have understood. But that same B graded fruit sold at Wholefood's prices...you must think we are too stupid and/or lazy to realize that this "store" does not value our dollars. Have you seen your rude ass staff interact with customers? That's right, you trained them and continue to retain them. I wish ill-will on no one, not even this running joke (and not a very funny one) of a "store." However, the day that it shutters its doors will not be unexpected. May the new Lidl being built right around the corner hasten the demise. I know that I usually would not want to see the employees suffer when, not if, this store closes, but they are a large part of the problem. Hell, they cannot even keep the bathrooms clean and not be rude to customers who have a multitude of choices to shop for groceries that are relatively close by. Simple things!!! The customer service is alway great here. I always take my time looking for certain items & even Thanksgiving day the staff was super helpful. I always seem to get the same cashier too...sweet guy. I also love to pit my number at the end and see all the money come off (regarding how much I've saved) I was also super excited b/c I got .50 off for my gas ! Gas at $2.15 a gallon !!!!!! I was able to fill up at $22. Haven't done that in quite sometime. My mom & I are always taking about how Safeway has great deals. I frequently visit the Safeway in Fairwood. I've noticed lately that there is usually only one cashier and some of the self check out machines are closed. Are you all hiring? Why is there only one cashier? Today I visited the store at noon, same thing one cashier and it look me about 40mins to get out of line because your self check out was so backed up and the ONE cashier line you had was backed up. People were coming into the one open cashier lane asking to get in front of other people because they only had one item and both lines were backed up. read more

Not sure how the store got such a low rating because I go out of my way to come to this one during the week. Here are the two reasons why I frequent it now: they have mochiko for making mochi and fresh store made tortilla chips that are the best!!!!!!!! I went there on a Thursday afternoon and everything was stocked, store was clean, meats looked fresh and over all organized. They had everything I was looking for and some really good specials on items I hadn't planned on getting like buy one get one free bolt house farms salad dressing special they were having. The cart returns are actual building roofs with white columns which gives it a nice elegant touch too, I mean it is a cart return in a parking lot after all but how nice! So the only thing I can come to conclude while reflecting back and munching on these fabulous tortilla chips is that I didn't have interaction with a single person while there. I did self check out and the entire time I perused through saw about six workers pushing carts and stocking and such but not one to ask if I needed help, so I wonder had I needed help would it have been difficult? I understood the one person in the building but she also helped two other people that came after me. I asked if the pump I was using number 8 and she just took a long pause, stared at me, stared at my car & said 10 I was confused but I caught on i just don't understand why she was being so hostile and beyond rude. I got a long ride back home, I wanted to be able to fill my tank get something cool to drink before hitting the road. The customer service was real nasty never going back!!! read more

So I went to the customer service desk, and every time, there is this guy apparently the manager. He always has an attitude when i try to send money thru WU. Every single time he does give me and my wife a hard time. At first I explain I need to send money, he starts by saying if the person is not in the system and Safeway cant change nothing sense WU does not allowed to do this. My response was YES the person is in system and her name is ....after a short look he say no one by that name is in the system, so we think he just can't read right the name ( long name in Spanish) I ask for a pice of paper so i can write down for him and he refused to provide, replying that person in system is not there and they cant change nothing at this point I was really piss off and I take my phone out and get my WU app and show this MANAGER that the person i sending the money is there and he just been an ass. I end up driving to Silver Spring WU store and ask if there was a change to the system, they say NO, everything still the same, so he just dont like to really help a customer. I really like this location because of the employees more than anything else. I have a service dog who is quite large and this is one of the few businesses that treat us both like family. Mary Ann is super sweet and is always sure to ask how we've been. Kenny is funny and always ensures we had a good shopping experience. Wendy is lovely and always says hi no matter how busy she is. Bill is very customer focused and ensures everyone finds what they need. There are far too many employees to list but I do enjoy all of my interactions. This location was put in place to test products and consumers needs for them so if certain things pop up or disappear, now you know why. I understand some frustration here but there are at least 2 other locations that'll have it and they aren't far at all. My biggest issue would be Safeway needs to go back to thicker bags. The bags break so easily before people make it to their cars. read more

I'm downgrading this from four stars to three. It's still a decent Safeway and a lot cleaner and more pleasant to shop in than the Giant at Eastgate Shopping Center but it's not what I thought it would be. There is a limited selection of food. The bakery is wanting big time for a decent selection of muffins. They have a ton of cookies and cakes but their individual muffins must run out 10 minutes after they are put out fro sale. I was looking for some mango chutney. No go. Ocean Spray Grapefruit juice. No go. They stock their generic brand. The pharmacy is also getting to be a little bit of a pain. They're pleasant enough but they take a long time even when there is no one in line and the prescription has been called in way in advance. I actually switched all my 'scrips to Safeway because I thought it would be faster and more organized than the Giant over at Eastgate Shopping Center (that pharmacy is an unholy mess). I guess it just depends on when you get there, Bottom line: It's OK if you only need a few staples you can get anywhere. If you want anything unusual or a deli counter that sells good meat or a salad bar that has any kind of variety, you may want to check out another store. read more

While waiting in the checkout line, I overheard the cashier tell another customer that she was just getting over pneumonia!!! Although she wore a mask, it is quite troubling to think that an employee came to work sick and was handling food. She went on to share feedback from her doctor. While I couldn't hear the full conversation, she was visibly sick...bent over and breathing heavily. My concern is two-fold. 1. She should be home resting until she's fully recovered and not gasping for air. And 2. The manager on duty shouldn't have allowed her to interact with customers and food. So many people are dealing with illness...why put your employee and your customers at risk!?? Please don't let sick employees come to work. read more

Prices at this Safeway is basically highway robbery. $17 dollars for almond butter when all other grocery stores such as Wegmans and Harris Teeter sell the exact same thing for $7 dollars. The almond butter isn't the only thing over priced. Almost everything in this store is way over priced, in addition, the staff come off as rude and lazy. When you ask a staff member for help, they act as if you've messed up their whole day. So very unprofessional. I should mention that this is my neighborhood grocery store, however, I will no longer shop here. It's worth the extra drive to Wegmans in Crofton or the Giant on 450. Customer service is way better and the food is better quality. This Safeway really needs a staff over haul. This includes all the management. read more

I don't have a problem with the products BUT something needs to be done about the self-checkout lines and how employees should address people. I was standing in the self-checkout line which is pretty much customers forming their own line in the aisles, as I was proceeding to the next available self-checkout station an employee came out from behind her register and abruptly told everyone in line "I don't know why you all think you can line up here!"....madam, there is no visible information or sign telling people where to line up. Do you want people to just hover over the self-checkout station? I politely told the employee that there is no information or instruction telling people they cannot line up, to which she rolled her eyes and brushed by me.....classy. If there is such a problem with people taking initiative and lining up to check-out, management should find a solution instead of employees hollering at customers. read more

Here's a letter I wrote to Steve Burd, the CEO of Safeway: "I just had the most miserable shopping experience of my life. I had it at Safeway store #2713 located at 12410 fairwood parkway in Bowie, MD 20720. Store employee Robert M. is the primary reason for my miserable shopping experience. Before I go into what happened, let me be the first person to say [1] I used to really like (no love) this particular Safeway store. I was the first to review this store on yelp.com And [2] I have loved and used Safeway stores for years. I've shopped at Safeway stores since there was a store on Michigan Avenue, NE between Webster & Allison. I 'grew up' and still live around the corner from that former Safeway store location. I do not harbor any ill will against Safeway stores. As a result of this letter, it is my hope that some employee sensitivity training will take place; that Safeway employees will get better. Here's what happened: I entered the Safeway, shopped, and took my two items to self checkout. I completed scanning those two items. Robert M. came to my checkout stand. He tried to distract my concentration by asking a question about my attire. It was Saint Patricks day; the temperature in Bowie, Maryland was 49°F. He asked me "why I had on a coat covering up my St. Patrick's day green clothes." (That is fine, man. Go ahead. Make your idle chit-chat, go right ahead. Fine. Fine.) I managed to stay focused and tune out Robert M. to the point where I said nothing to him. I concentrated on the sensitive technology of the self checkout machine, handed him my reuseable bag in which to place my two items. He did. Then he set the bag onto the bagging area and walked away. (Thanks buddy. Fine.) Now, instead of proceeding to the checkout screen, the sensitive self checkout machine tells me that there is an unknown object in the bagging area. (What the HELL?!) I had the same two items that were previously just sitting there; only now, they were inside of my reuseable bag. So I lifted the bag off of the bagging area. The sensitive self checkout machine proceeds to tell me to replace the items. I do but the sensitive self checkout machine still does not allow me to "finish and pay." (Ugh, I do not have time for this!) I move from that sensitive self checkout machine to the next one. All the while, Robert M. has moved on to the individuals at another checkout stand, presumably to mess up their transactions and walk away. When Robert M. notices that I have moved to another self checkout, he comes back over and starts trying to touch my items and mess up my transaction again. I say "no no no please do not 'help' me. Please do not 'help' me." [...] I completed the checkout process at the second checkout stand, paid, and when my transaction was complete, I placed my two items into the bag without the "assistance" of Robert M. When I exited the store, I heard Robert M. repeatedly "making fun" of the interaction with me. That is not good customer service in my opinion. So I took the extra two seconds to come back into the store to actually look at Robert M.'s nametag. That is the reason I know (and am emphasizing) store employee Robert M. He ruined my shopping experience at Safeway Store 2713 with unnecessary interruptions to my transaction and "acting a fool" when I exited. With my difficult family situation, traffic, work, etc. I really just didn't need that kind of thing. I really didn't. It was unnecessary. At any rate Mr. Burd, you can see that I am a writer. I'm extremely calm, cool and collected. I believe in telling my story. Now there are two sides to every story so please take this as an opportunity to confer with Robert M.; hear his side. Mr. Burd, I truly believe that you and other Safeway employees do care about customer service. I also believe that by telling you my story, you can possibly inform the employees that staff the self checkout stand that sometimes highly intelligent technologically savvy customers with only two items may not need help putting their items in a bag, may just want to complete their transaction on their own. You might also inform the staff of the self checkout stand that making fun of customer interactions in a loud voice is not good customer service. Thank you for listening. read more

Maybe I need to write a letter to Mr. Burd. This has NEVER however been my favorite Safeway. BUT, there are some employees here whom i ADORE: Candy, LaTara, Mr. Charles, Ms. Claudia, the young lady who has the twins-she works checkouts at night. When this safeway first opened it had an uphill battle...the long lines up two and three isles to the back of the store on a random saturday night (and Im not exaggerating). But I never really encountered a rude employee UNTIL TODAY. No wait, I do on a regular basis with a particular young lady who works hotfoods/deli. It was just her. And let me preface, that I was practically raised in a deli, that was my mother's livlihood as a single parent which put me through nearly 18 years of private school education- so I have a lot of respect and reverence really for the work. My mother perfected the art of not just platters (developing one of the first at GIANT in the 60s) I come over to wait on sandwich service-and I wait. And I'm patient. Well after 7 minutes, I was a little annoyed about being ignored. I could really have waited all week for this sandwich. My thing is acknowledge the customers who are waiting, let us know we aren't invisible. Its courtesy and respect. Another 2 mintues go by and more of a line begins to form. The young woman looks over and then continues to ignore us AGAIN. I wasn't expecting for her to yell across and say something. But a wave, a gesture, a wink ANYTHING. Well I think when another customer in line behind me said something about "this deli"..I dunno, I got annoyed. So I walked over and said. I know you're busy but maybe could you call someone to help or just let us know you see us over here. her reply: "I'm helping someone else now". okey dokey. 3 minutes later after the customer she's helping leaves and she cleans up the counter and adjusts things in her case. She decides to call someone to help. I mentioned to her after the other customers left and privately-that "it would be nice if you have of gestured. I shouldn't be able to readily see that you don't like being here by yourself or you'd rather not help me or anyone else in the sandwich line. her response-she never looked at me. Her manager informed me she was already in trouble. I refrained from going into my long speech on right work and maybe this part of safeway NOT being her thing. She could be most effecient in the office-not customer facing. What I never set out to do is getting anyone in more trouble, sometimes just training helps. But I wonder with her-she's usually extremely cold and sterile, but today was the WORST. Maybe its something in fairwood's retail water. Very lazy, apathetic staff - customer service is non-existent. This Safeway is in a new upscale development but you couldn't tell it by the poor service they provide. The shelfs often need to be re-stocked, and the checkout people would rather chat with each other than work. The Safeway is supposed to close at midnight. I went there today at 11:10p and was told 'we're closed'. It would be nice if you posted that so customers knew. There are two other Safeways and a Giant in Bowie- I recommend you use one of them. read more

The past 4-5 times I was here I had awful experiences. They have always been short staffed, long wait times, a woman who doesn't feel like waiting on you at the deli, a cashier that yelled at me in the 10 or less item lane because I had 14 items. The other 2 open lanes had several over-filled carts waiting so I did not want to wait in those lines. I started going to Shoppers on MLK next to Chick fila and although I had this idea that shoppers food stores were run down and awful, this one amazed me. Super clean, bright, and room for other carts to pass you by in the aisles. It was such a better experience than the Safeway and the Giant. Sorry, Safeway, I've been a long time supporter - but you just haven't been doing a good job. read more

The Safeway it self is pretty bad in terms of product. Not much of an organic selection of meats or veggies either. The biggest flaw here is customer service, even by a manager. I asked for a certain item, they didn't walk me over to the place nor checked the computer if they had it when i asked. I first asked customer service, then i asked the manager in which i wish i got his name, but short dark skinned bald gentleman. He was the worst and no help what so ever. If you need a manger i will come train your staff for a fee. There are never enough cashiers, no one is ever on the floor to help, notice above i stated i had to walk to customer service to get help also mind u 3 people were standing there talking. Grocery 101- you do everything you can to find a product a customer is asking for, also if you dont have it see if you can get it. Also you do not point in a direction and say if we have it, it would be over there. YOU WALK YOUR CUSTOMER TO THE AREA AND TRY TO HELP THEM FIND IT. Safeway advertised their asparagus has buy one get one free. However the asparagus, prepackaged or the asparagus loosely bundled, showed otherwise in the attached photo it shows the weekly ad of buy one get one free for the asparagus loose bunch and 199 per pound. However, only the asparagus that were for $6.99 came up as a buy one get one free. So essentially you're spending more money because the advertisement is incorrect. When I asked the produce manager and another employee about the sale their explanation contradicted what was advertised in the sale paper. The Safeway employees seemed confused as to how I didn't understand that the ad that says buy one get one free isn't really buy one get one free. Needless to say I am still confused. I called the Lanham corporate office but haven't heard anything back on the false advertising ad. read more

I want to compliment Safeway in Fairwood of Bowie, Maryland. Each time I visit the store, the experience is pleasant. I told the manager how I felt yesterday after being helped to my car without needing to asked. I have to laugh at the lady from DC with the obvious inferiority chip on her shoulder. DC people come to the burbs and get all huffy over our lifestyles. Here's a hint - if you don't like shopping in Bowie, please shop in DC. We would surely prefer not having to deal with your foolishness. As for the other poster with the girl crush on the deli chick, here's a hint for you - she doesn't go that way. I don't write many reviews, but thought this warrants one. I have shopped at this Safeway since they opened, off and on. Not until today when I scrutinized my receipt did I see the apparent deception they have going. I was overcharged on 4 out of 27 items I purchased as the prices on my receipt did not match what was on the label, or on the shelves. This amounted to 18 percent of my bill. I won't shop here again, and I'll know better to better check the prices at other stores I shop. read more

This evening I visited the Safeway in Fairwood/ Bowie MD with my 5 year old daughter around 7pm and as always the store is nice and clean and the employees are always nice and willing to assist. My visit went well until I stop at the Starbucks located inside the store. I ordered my drink and my daughter asked for a cake pop. When I asked the cashier to add it to my order the cashier, a tall plus sized Hispanic woman looked at me and said, "We don't got no more cake pops". There were clearly 2 cake pops left in the display window. I looked over to where the last 2 cake pops were and my daughter walked over to the window and pointed to them. I asked her were they a display or something and she never looked at me she just nodded and mumbled something under her breath. There was a block shaped thing with empty holes holding the last two cake pops up which meant those empty holes were once occupied by more cake pops that was sold to other customers through out the day. Before making my drink she quickly walked over to the display window and cut the light off. If this woman was saving the last cake pops for herself ( because it was getting close to her shutting down for the evening), it probably would've been smart to just remove the last 2 cake pops from the display window instead of lying and refusing to sell them to a customer and a small child who could see that there was some left. The woman's snappy attitude was something I wasn't used to at that location that I frequent a lot. I called the store manager to make a complaint and she was apologetic but didn't seem surprised at all about what happened. read more
