They have some of the friendliest drive-up pickup staff of any grocery store I've shopped at, especially compared to Target and Whole Foods. I started using their pickup service when I was pregnant with my twins, and every single interaction was so kind and made me want to continue using that service. This particular Safeway is my moms favorite grocery store. I don't understand why, but it is. I have been grocery shopping with my mom recently as she is healing. The parking lot is crazy tight! There are decent handicapped spots so it's not a problem when I am with my mom but still the first thing you will notice. Inside the store is bright and expensive. I know all things are expensive right now but this Safeway doesn't even try to tone it down. I watched my mom pay 13 dollars for apples! And the deli/hot food area. She stops here every time to grab some stuff and I find the employees she interacts with are rude and off putting. Same with the cashiers. Except for once we had a friendly one. Also every time now I have bagged our groceries. Also, all the cleanliness ends if you go to use the rest room. Nasty, no purse hanger, dirty floors and sink and broken changing table. Smells funny. Came here again, just to give it another try a few months later, same issue, there's three people behind the deli area working, and one out in front, and I stood at the sandwich counter for 15 minutes waiting for somebody to help me I called over a couple times, but nobody responded, two other people came to go to the hot food and the sliced meat and they got helped almost immediately. They came at least 10 minutes after I got there, it's just ridiculous. Edit: I also would like to add before I left the store. I attempted to trade in lottery ticket at the service desk, they have a button that you press that radios for somebody to come help you even though you're standing at the front of the store with a bunch of people staring at you from Safeway, I waited there for 10 minutes before giving up and leaving. This Safeway is arranged almost backwards to how the downtown Walnut Creek location is ordered, where the personal care items are at the opposite end of the store. I was able to drop in and find a couple bottles of my shampoo and easily use their self-checkout at their larger self-checkout section. My shampoos weren't locked so I was in and out in just a few minutes. I also loved their seating area out front - much nicer than the local Starbucks next door. This is the closest grocery store to my house, but for the last several years I have just taken to driving a little farther down to Lucky. The Lucky employees are much friendlier and more helpful. I think the prices are actually a little better at Safeway, but I just couldn't deal with the rudeness anymore. I recently went in here a few times to try it out again, and it does seem like the overall attitude is a little bit better, but still not the kind of customer service I get at Lucky. One of my absolute pet peeves about this store is the deli; and I know it's not just me because I'm seeing it in other reviews. It's hard to get any service even when there's absolutely no other customers at the deli. If you want a sandwich made, good luck, I don't know what you have to do to get them over to that end. I've tried flagging people down and asking them, but when they see you coming, they'll quickly duck into the back behind the deli or go somewhere and try and act like they're cleaning or restocking something. The only one ever left out there is the guy making the sushi, but he can't help you. I was actually there one day and the checker asked me if I found everything I needed. I told her no, I couldn't get anybody to help me at the deli and it seemed like they were actively avoiding me to the point it was hilarious and frustrating all at the same time. I'd walk down to the other end where there were employees and they would disappear before I could get there and then pop up somewhere else. I suggested her and the manager should watch the indoor cameras if they didn't believe me, because it was almost comical how hard they were trying to avoid serving somebody. read more

This place is still just as horrible as ever. If you want to place a bakery order I suggest going anywhere but here. First of all, you can never find an employee working there. I tried twice then I gave up and went to the Safeway order ahead website where you can place an online order. I chose a seasonal cake, did not customize it whatsoever. Ordered as is two weeks in advance for a baby shower. When my husband got there they gave him the wrong cake. It was Ugly and plain and looked nothing remotely like the photo on the website. I went back to the bakery and asked them to correct the cake and instead got yelled at and argued with by the decorator who is completely unprofessional and has no business working with the public. Endlessly arguing with me saying "how was she supposed to know what the cake looks like with no picture!?" told her over and over this is directly from your website. It is not custom. You should know what cakes Safeway is selling. I even looked at the order form the bakery had and it said exactly what I ordered. Sounds like a training/cake decorator issue not a customer issue. 15 minutes of this back and forth. She was making me late for my own event. Telling me she's busy with customers orders and to come back later. I told her I am not coming back later. I ordered this two weeks ago for a certain date and time for a reason! So unprofessional I had to resort to a day old cake from the display case. It was ugly, dry and an embarrassment. Ultimately, about 15 minutes later, the manager came over to help, but what was done was done. They refunded the price they charged my husband for the original cake, and even that was a screwup because they overcharged my husband to begin with. DO NOT trust this place for any special occasion. The cake was absolutely terrible and nobody ate it and it wound up in the trash. It looks nothing like anything special. It just looked like a basic birthday cake. Full Forest department I love all the flowers here was able to get a nice bouquet of flowers for my mother. This safe Way was pretty organized also had a nice produce section where I was able to get some romaine lettuce and fresh organic basil leaves. I was also able to find my favorite shampoo and conditioner in stock which was nice. I have been a Safeway shopper for many years. Overall it is my go-to grocery shopping store. read more

The absolute worst customer service and bad attitude. I just came in to get some white chocolate chips Select brand on sale for 3.99. The shelf was empty so asked for a substitute Toll House white chips. I asked the self service attendant if she would honor the sale price and she said no. So then asked for a manager. She said he was at lunch so asked for assistant manager. Nope he asked gone for the day. Finally a manager showed up and went to the back to see if there were more white chips in the stockroom. Nope. So he offered a rain check. I explained that I needed them now for a party tomorrow. No. No. No. But I did get lots of grumpy faces. This Safeway is right by my house and is my go to spot since it is convenient! I love the butchers in the meat department! I like to experiment in the kitchen and they are a big help! They are willing to help cut anything to the perfect size for me! This is so important because we are a small household and I'm the only one who really eats meat. So I need less. They are also so helpful when I pick up a new cut and need some advice on how to cook it perfectly. I love how the specialty cheese section has grown recently! There is a local highlight which I love! As well as some great new finds! The staff is always so friendly and helpful. This review is specifically for the bakery. Did a custom order for 48 cupcakes. I asked for them to be rainbow design with the small colored sprinkles (rather than the big dot sprinkles they usually use on cupcakes) and had a specific time to pick them up. They did an incredible job with this order!! The cupcakes were the most perfect color, I couldn't have asked for it better. They used the exact sprinkles we wanted, and it was ready right when I stopped by. Couldn't have been happier, and the happiest person of all was my 4 year old daughter who's birthday they were for. She was stoked! I also can't forget to mention that the buttercream they make here is unmatched. We've tried other (more expensive) places and are always let down. Behind the scenes Andrew checked the back, then went looking for me, and brought me what I needed. I was surprised he made the extra effort. He also cleaned the lettuce. Who does that? My wife went to 5431 Clayton Safeway on March 6th 2023 and ordered two birthday cakes for my twins son Spider Man Blue and Red and the other one is Decopac Blue, so I when went to picked them up on March 7 2023. They decorate the cakes like they decorate the cakes so ugly, I'm so frustrated about the decorations of the cakes and when I asked the bakery lady she was answered me rude, impudently and it's unacceptable to everyone. Just want to say don't order any cakes especially birthday cakes otherwise your kids will cry, like my son did yesterday on his birthday and so me and my wife where frustrated on my sons birthday. I personally think Safeway is a good store. Let me start off by saying I have nothing against pets. I have a pet of my own. My issue is when people bring in their (so called service animals ) into the store and put them in the carts everyone else uses to put their groceries in. This is the third time I've seen someone with a dog in their cart. I feel this is unsanitary and a health issue. I'm sure Safeway is not cleaning these carts after an animal has been in them. Safeway management should address this problem immediately. If an individual is so emotionally reliant on a service animal they should have the groceries delivered to their home or pick them up at one of the many parking spots Safeway offers. Inadequate staffing. Long lines. Don't look for assistance. No help is coming. The two stars are for some of the checkers who are pleasant folks. No stars for the management of this store. Yesterday (Sunday afternoon) I only had a few items; however, one was a bottle of wine so I had to use a checker. There were nine people in line for self check out stands (not including all check out stations were full). In the regular check out lines, there were only two checkers available. I chose a line and stood there for several minutes when a young man stepped in front of me and moved my cart back and closed the line with a chain. I said don't close the line right in front of me while I'm standing here. He replied that "his boss told him to close the line in front of me. The checker at this line, an unpleasant young woman chimed in, "I turned off my light". I moved to the only other line with a checker and joined the four people in line there. Right after I moved, they reopened the line they closed in my face with a new checker. There was no reason to send me away. A few days earlier while attempting to check out with a full cart of groceries at this store, there was only one checker with 5 people in line. I walked over to the Safeway employee in the self check area and said "Hi, there is only one line open with 5 people in line. The unpleasant older man didn't look up from what ever he was reading and said "sounds about right". I'm done with the frustration and wasted time shopping at this Clayton Safeway store. I'll try shopping at the Safeway in Concord on Clayton Rd. at Treat. It looks like the cleaned up the Lucky store in Concord a bit. I'll try there again also. read more

I was looking for a breakfast idea, and then I found this tray of cinnamon rolls that turned out to be a hit in my family. At the price of $5, I thought it was a good deal provided there was about 6 rolls in the tray (it was really hard to tell because the whole thing was covered in cream cheese icing). I would recommend heating up each roll for somewhere in between 10 to 15 seconds before consuming it, so that it gets softer and fluffier. The only downside is that you could not easily separate out the icing from the roll, so you would have to microwave the icing as well, which melts it a little bit. But honestly I didn't care, because the whole thing still tasted good. But if you did, then I would recommend scraping off the icing and putting it aside first before microwaving the roll, then add the icing back onto the roll afterwards. But overall, I really liked the cinnamon rolls, and I would get them again next time. read more

This is my usual go to grocery store they're always changing products and this drives me crazy. As soon as you start to like something/product you'll never find it again at this Safeway. I was told. By the liquor stocking manager that they are mostly a wine and beer store they do carry a small selection of hard alcohol unlike other Safeways in the area that have a full liquor section. Every time we come here morning mid day or evening or night. there's always just a couple checkers open and lines are incredible. They keep encouraging everyone to use the self check and here's my problem with that; one I have alcohol in my cart so I can't use self check Two, if I'm using self check out, do they offer me an employee discount since I'm doing their job. And three, does the union know I'm not paying members now taking their jobs. Come on Safeway stop cheating your customers and get some checkout clerk's read more

Today, 5/25/24, during checkout, I presented the checker, Ahrari, with a coupon for one of my items. He tried to scan but it didn't take. He told me it went through and I asked him to show me. He pointed at the screen, like that was good enough, and put the coupon in his drawer. I told him it didn't take and to give me my coupon back. You should have seen this guy.....what a CHEATER......totally disgusting. I then went to customer service and a really nice girl named Fernanda processed my $3.00 coupon. ZERO stars for that creep, Ahrari, and a million stars for Fernanda.
