I must really crave punishment, as I know I shouldn't step foot in this store, but it's on my way home from work. So, when I need something for dinner that day, I cross my fingers, toes, eyes, and whatever else I can cross for an incident-free short shopping trip... Then I slap myself on the forehead and go home fuming... Today was no exception. I wanted to have a seafood dinner, so went to the fish/meat department, and tried to find someone behind the counter. Waited 5 minutes, while ringing the bell a few times, but no one came out. I saw an employee come out from the back, so asked him to call someone. Waited another 5 minutes. Still no one came out. Saw another employee come out from the same door, and asked him to call someone. Waited another 5 minutes. Still no one came out. Saw an employee walking toward me from the bakery. Asked her to call someone. Waited another 5 minutes. Still no one came out. I called the store phone number, and waited 5 minutes on hold for a customer service person to answer. I asked him to PLEASE find out why I've been waiting almost 20 minutes at the meat counter after requesting assistance 3 other times. A lady comes over from the front, and goes in the back to check the schedule. "The meat counter guy is on lunch. Won't be back for 20 more minutes. Sorry, no one else can be behind the counter. I love Safeway fresh deli pizza, it tastes so good when it's baked. And their donuts from the bakery are so good. I like this Safeway especially because it's clean and the staff and service here is good. As soon as I walked into Safeway I was greeted. When I went to the bakery I was asked if I need any help. You can't tell when they're loading and unloading stuff or putting merchandise on the shelf because it seems like they do this overnight. Whatever it is they're doing it's working. read more

Looking for a different grocery store in the area to shop at; I recently tried the Safeway at the Treat Blvd. and Clayton Rd. shopping center. First, parking was easy and available up close to the entrances. As I entered the store for the first time as I was looking around the bread area a very pleasant Safeway employee, Sarah approached with a smile and asked if I needed any assistance finding anything. I don't recall anyone at the previous grocery store I've been using asking me if I needed assistance in many years. I completed my shopping and found several open check out isles with short or no lines. I have a very good first impression. I'll be back. read more

Ordered delivery multiple times and they are always delayed. On this past order, we had plans we had to cancel because of the delay which led to us losing money due to Safeways poor customer service. They missed our 4-hour delivery window so we called at the end of it which we were told we would receive our order within the hour. Three hours went by after we ordered food delivery (we would have cooked but no groceries thanks Safeway...another situation caused by their poor customer service ending with us losing more money..) We call a second time only to be told that the drivers went home for the day and call back tomorrow. We have plans tomorrow and will be asking for a full refund at the very least as we refuse to lose more money because of Safeways poor customer service. Another point to be made regarding the delivery service is their pricing being FALSELY ADVERTISED. We have ordered something on a "buy one, get one" sale purely because of the sale, however if they are out of stock of an item, you are shit out of luck and so is your deal / your money. The deal is not rectified rather you are just paying full price for one item. You'd think they cut the price in half due to being out of stock of the other item but nope, they don't care about the customer. Whole Foods and Trader Joe's it is I guess. read more

I like shopping here and I like that they have the cute double seat cars shopping carts for kids. Only downside is they are always left out in the hot sun. My kids always get burned by the seats or we usually go inside and wait 5 min for them to cool down. I tried to purchase tillamook cheddar as it's rarely on sale. I entered my land line number associated with our account and it didn't take the $6 off. I took a picture of the digital coupon and showed the man at self check. He said I needed the app. So I downloaded the app and entered my landline which showed as not a register mobile of course because it was for my home phone that doesn't exist anymore. He wouldn't honor the discount so I went to the store manager and she told me my husband needed to be there if he had the app (which he does but had it for years and doesn't have his mobile number). So I told her it was horrible customer service and she said " that's the way it works". Excuse me? I may just drive 2 more miles to another Safeway where they provide excellent customer service. She was not a bright lady and looked confused the entire time so what do you expect for the rating her store gets. What a joke. read more

Our office has been ordering groceries from Safeway for a few months and this is the store that does the delivery. Our office building is one of the biggest in Walnut Creek, we've never had an issue for the most part before - we generally do orders over $300 and they're delivered when they say they will. Until now. $365 amount of groceries for our office. I get an email saying the order has been delivered but it hasn't. I look all over the floor where our office is on (we're on the 5th floor). Nothing. I call "customer service" and they say it's been delivered but it hasn't. Long story short, the idiot doing the delivery left it in the GARAGE. I'm not sure why someone would go into a garage where there's 100 cars parked and leave $365 dollars of groceries by the elevator and somehow think that the company that ordered it would get it. Turns out it was just left there for anyone coming in or going out, to pick and choose what they wanted, which they did. They tell us on the phone they'll do a reorder so now we have to wait another day for our order and they say it will be delivered between 1-3. Nothing comes the next day. I call, I get hung up, I get transferred to the store - who knows nothing, I keep calling, I get hung up on again, I get transferred again to the store (who again, knows nothing). I've been treated like a complete idiot. Again, $365 dollar order. Left in the garage for anyone to take. Cannot get a reorder done. Safeway did charge me for the $365 but still hasn't actually given me anything. They have treated me like an imbecile but they haven't actually provided any service. I've talked to the people at this physical store - the ones who handle the delivery and they have zero clue about any of this. Zero clue about the moron who left our groceries in the garage or any reorder. I spoke to a manager at corporate and requested that the person who left our groceries in the garage never come anywhere near our future orders and the guy at this store not only had no idea what I was talking about, but laughed. He thought it was funny. I got the impression this guy didn't think it was a big deal to leave a $365 order in the garage of a big office building for anyone to come and take what they want. This is how this Safeway treats customers. This is how you run a major corporation? How many people do $365 orders? It's mind boggling how they do not want to the service. I have attempted to speak to a supervisor at corporate NUMEROUS times and they keep hanging up on me. They say "hold on" and I'm on hold, then the "survery" comes on. So I'm not accidentally getting cut off, they're purposely doing this because they don't want me speaking to a supervisor. One guy on the phone, when I asked to speak to a supervisor, was terrified "why? Why do you need to speak to a supervisor? What did I do?" I convinced him it wasn't him, I wanted to talk to them about this situation. Hung up. Now I've been attempting to get a refund. Spent another 30 minutes on the phone with a guy, setting up the refund and then asked about getting a supervisor (since no one will actually transfer me to one at this company). He was terrified it was about him, I had to assure him I had no issue with him. Hung up. Safeway. $365 dollar order left in the garage of a giant office building. Treated me like a complete jerk. Is this a place you want to deal with? And here's the kicker. They're reading this, and they don't care. They're laughing, just like they did about their guy leaving our order in a parking garage. Nice place, hm? Update: So they sent us another order - made it to the actual office this time - and left off about $60 worth of candy. No mention was made that it wasn't included - upon further inspection when we discovered it wasn't there, turns out they didn't have it in stock. But they didn't tell us. Nothing about "we didn't have this or your order is short." Just delivered it not completely fulfilled - yet still want to charge us the full amount. I assume they figured we wouldn't catch on that our entire order wasn't there. Is this a company you want to deal with (we did get replacements for the stuff that wasn't included - only because we persued it, not them) Absolutely incredible. read more

Just went to this Safeway location and pulled up to a security guard who watched me go in. She chased me down after I walked in and made me leave my reusable bag up front while I shopped. ( I only brought in one and it was folded. ) How petty, unprofessional, and lacking any common sense. Especially when she watched me pull up in a 110K car. Came in to have sandwiches made at the deli counter. Girl working counter says she's never made sandwiches before. Obviously, some training should have happened at some point. My husband had to explain how to make a sandwich. Painful to watch. I went and sat in the car. Customer service is not something important to this store. Let me start off by saying I very rarely if practically ever spend my precious time writing a review. That is unless the service or product in question is completely unacceptable, even to a completely laid back man as myself. Outside Safeway right now, on the Yelp app, I first noticed this Safeway has a rather stellar review star count of 2 out of 5, so that also helped me choose to write this review, as I must help with there average review count! So I drive down to Safeway tonight to return a Tri-Tip that my wife purchased a few days back. When starting the BBQ up this evening and preparing to cook this rather tasty looking piece of meat, I luckily noticed in small print on the side this piece of meat is best consumed by 10/5/21. Ok, only 1 day late, I think well slide by without any gastrointestinal issues, Ill just keep it to myself should my wife get sick tonight, right? Don't want to set myself up for a fight with failure imminent. Then I stopped dead in my tracks, pulled out my iPhone and asked good old Alexa what the date was. November 6, 2021. Oh my God this piece of meat was over a month past the eaten by date! Thank God, I didn't accidentally hastily throw her on the grill as I usually do! So, dinner ruined first complaint! I decided to drive down to Safeway tonight although my wife told me she would return the meat tomorrow, but I wanted to make sure they realized the danger of such a mistake and I hoped they would be rather grateful I caught such a issue tonight before the BBQ ensued instead of tomorrow night after spending 24 hours over the toilet with searing pain ripping through our stomachs for so long, we had still not received any sleep, and I would have been in a much different mood than tonight. Sorry for the length of my review but I felt the story needed to be told in its entirety! So I picked up a few items to purchase and went to the register. The cashier, was rather friendly and helpful and immediately started the return. Let me interrupt this story to admit I made a mistake I have never done before, I left my entire wallet at my house with the receipt tucked nicely inside the pocket. So the cashier returned the meat and rang up the items I was purchasing. The return was to be in the $17 range, and I prayed they would do it without me going all the way home to fetch the receipt. Especially considering the severity of their mistake in having month old meat out on there shelves! Luckily, the lady cashier made no bid deal out of the situation and nearly finished the transaction when a rather small gentlemen darted out from what I could only imagine was his little elf house in the tree outside Safeway. He had obviously garnered some seniority over the cashier as I believe she was brand new. The little gentleman had a rather accusatory tone and a large smile as he immediately denied the return! He tossed the meat back and forth in his rather smallish child like hands and asked the most brilliant question that stopped me dead in my tracks. If I weren't a savant myself (JK) and had stolen this meat as it seemed was the conclusion he was coming to, this would have most definitely been the end of the tracks for my string of grocery store spoiled meat robberies. He asked me "Why on earth the meat was cold" with a sense of bewilderment in his eyes, yet he knew even though he didn't know the answer to this brilliant question either, that one way or another it would flush out the truth about the suspected robbery! Then I shocked him with the perfect answer. I told him at my house in this day and age we have a refrigerator and we put meat and other products in there to keep them fresh! He had been outsmarted by his suspect and the game was over, he had no other brilliant questions or tactics up his sleeves to get me to admit my major crimes! He just refused the return again and scattered away to his little elf home! Now, I am back at home about to drive all the way back to the store to once again return the meat. I should also note he tried to keep the meat until I get back, of which I rejected should I not be able to make it back at this late hour. But this is one of those situations I need to see to the end, I will be returning with the receipt that shows this meat was purchased only 2 days ago! I think this will be the end of my days shopping at this store due to the downright rudeness of this man and the month old spoiled meat that somehow sat on a shelf for that long without anyone noticing the date on it. Please take this warning! Check the dates of your food at this store and if you do make the same mistake as me do not expect any customer service or helpfulness from the staff. In fact I must urge everybody out there to not even waste your time at this terrible store!! read more

1 star for their meat counter personnel ALL OUT TO LUNCH AT THE SAME TIME on Saturday, Jan. 6, 2024. I intended to purchase some meat they had under glass that they did not have out in their open space. I saw an "Out to Lunch" sign taped to the glass, so I shopped around for a while and went back to the meat counter, and still no one around. I was just one of many customers who were also looking for someone. One man was looking for a bell to ring and gave a loud "Hello", to no avail. It's a fairly standard Safeway, but points are always earned for having self-check. I mostly come here for the wine section, though, which unfortunately means I'm banished to the regular lines with only one item in hand...pretty depressing. Aside from wine, this is a solid deli if you're looking for a sandwich or the standard fare. They have the $9.99 Shanghai Meal Deal (i.e. tons o' heating-lamp Chinese food for a very reasonable price), but their food looked like it was at least a day old; congealed over and pretty tired looking. I'll continue to stick to the Pleasanton deli for that one. I've been stopping in this Safeway for about 15 years - it's reliable, if not mind-blowing, and is a decent place to stop if you forgot something at Food Maxx or are too lazy to go all the way to Trader Joe's. read more

The associates here seem bored, annoyed and willing to talk horribly about the shoppers, while barely doing much of anything. I've seen two separate associates talking poorly of customers in front of them or in front of other people. They don't get talked to much by management, who seem to either be in earshot and not do anything about it or are in on the conversation, which is pretty bad. Literally only shopping here due to it being less than a minute from my house, but to be honest, the Clayton Station one is better and has nicer employees by far. Only coming back if I need to pick up a quick item or two, but aside from that, keeping away from this place like it's the plague. read more

She is a wobbly on her feet and with no fault other than her 2 feet things happen. Good size head bump, banged and cut up. There was a team person instantly and right away the store manager. While I know they have to be overly cautious out of policy their actions weren't just policy and procedure. True compassion and concern. The story is longer with more of all they did. I had both positive and negative experience with this location. I ordered a cake for my daughter's birthday and they misspelled her name on a cake. I was told they could redo it but I needed to come back the following day. We needed the cake right away so that wasn't an option. They tried to correct it but in result it was not that great bc it ended to be a little smudged. Of course I was frustrated and asked for some type of discount. It's my local Safeway and I don't really like coming here. I have on two separate occasions purchased meat here that was spoiled. I did contact the manager and they refunded me my money. I believe the meat is piled too high in some areas and it keeps the meat from staying cold. The veggie and fruit section always look nice! read more

I write this crappy review and I would like to say that I am an expert on this Safeway as is the closest one to my home. The store is a complete let down. You can guarantee them to be completely out and in absolute disarray shitshow MESS of things like coffee creamer, bread, cheese at 10 in the morning. I don't know why this location always smells like piss like they can't afford a power wash for their front steps for their patrons. I just literally left the store with an empty shopping cart and a huge grocery list because my first three essential items we're not on the shelves! Safeway let down 150 Kindergarteners at El Monte Elementary. I had set up a donation with the manager of the floral department for 150 pumpkins to be donated for Halloween. I called and checked in several times and her assistant said it should be no problem. Well I called today and the Manager is "off" and the store management is "out to lunch" and they have backed out and never ordered the pumpkins for us. They promised and now they went back on it. 3/16/23 shopped at the Clayton Rd. Safeway. This was the worst service I have had at a Safeway. During the visit I was reaching for a can of beans on sale on the top shelf, stacked in 2s. I am short and it is a reach, in the process the can on top ended up falling and hitting me on the left side of the face. I saw an employee in produce and asked her who I could talk to and told her of the incident and it really hurt. I wanted to make a suggestion that it is dangerous to stack cans in 2s on the top shelf especially if you are short. She asked if I was okay and offered Advil(?) for the headache. She recommended going to the front and ask to speak to Laura or Anthony (Asst. Mgrs.?). The guy at checkout suggested to talk to the people at guest services. There was a blonde woman in a white shirt that asked if I had a question and told her about the incident. She called for Anthony and I retold the incident. I asked that if it was okay that if my head continued to hurt, I would come back and make a report, the reply was "yeah" and then turned and walked away. Aside from the employee in produce, NOT ONCE was I asked if I was okay, NOT ONCE did they ask my name or information, NOT ONCE did they ask if there was anything they could do or if I wanted to complete a report. If anything, they made me feel that it was a bother for them to talk to me and just brushed it off and NO APOLOGIES! read more

Good Evening! I stopped by Safeway to get some cleaning supplies and the lady who was ringing me up was texting on her phone. She would scan an item, then she would check her phone for a few seconds to text and then get back to scanning the next items. I think as a workplace, it's extremely unprofessional for her to be texting while there are several people in line -- seeing as she was the ONLY cashier!!! If she's going to be texting, then Safeway should find a more competent worker to be a cashier. Not only did she take forever to ring items up because she was texting, she gave me incorrect change because she did not even bother to actually look at my reciept or the computer that was right in front of her. This cashier is horrible. Give her a different position if she wants to stand and text and prolong things for customers who just want to get home, don't let her be the ONLY cashier available either. As many of the reviews here have noted, Safeway delivery is bad. Really bad. The 8am to 10am window has gone by and attempts to email results in a BOT reply to call customer service. A call to customer service resulted in a 45 minute hold and still no human. Do yourself a favor and just go to the store or order from Amazon, Costco or Google Express where those companies actually provide sufficient resources for an operational delivery service. Safeway deliver service is a definite failure in the truest sense. read more

I'm writing this review because after shopping here for 2 years, I think it's time I voiced my opinion. As it turned out, I'm not the only that feels this. Others have voiced their concerns as well. As for me, there are a certain 2 employees or cashiers that always made me feel unwelcome whenever I shop there and they always work at the self checkout. They either have the attitude of annoyance or the attitude of I don't care. I still can't figure it out. One of the employee seems to think that she's all that when she's not. The other employee just have that abrupt attitude of I know it all. At times, these 2 employees made me feel like I'm being racially profiled and it's only these 2 employees. It doesn't matter what I needed help with but they always give me that attitude. Whether I'm asking help with the self checkout or getting a rain check or one time I had to return an item that I recently bought. They never smile or greet the customers. I went to the store a week ago to buy this product and when I got home, I found out that the product I just bought was expired by almost 2 years. I went in to the store a few weeks ago (I try to only shop once a week) to let them know and the same employee I mentioned above gave me the attitude like I'm trying to cheat them. I told them I bought these and they were all the way in the back so I don't know if another customer secretly exchange the expired product or the product got left behind and no one notices it when restocking it. But the attitude from this employee is so negative. She told her manager and the manager also give me the same attitude. So I'm like I don't need this. I should have just bought another one and suck up the $8 bucks but to me, it's about the principal. I should have listen to my husband. He told me that they will behave this way. He told me that they would think it's me when it's not. So I just bought another package and suck it up. I rather lose the $8 instead of getting the attitude and the look that I got. Another example is when I asked their help with the self checkout, it's like they made me feel that I'm stupid for not being able to operate the self checkout because an item wouldn't scan their label or that I'm a burden. Whatever it is... there's that attitude. I understand working at a grocery store is tiring. I been there. I worked at a grocery store too when I was in my early twenties. But still.., it's not an excuse. Luckily it's not everyone that has this attitude. I like everyone else that work here especially the manager at the flower section. That flower manager always been nice, helpful and friendly. You can tell she really enjoys what she does. I was only planning to buy 2 calla lilies plants for Easter but because of her helpfulness and our pleasant conversation, I ended up buying 3 additional calla lilies, 2 cute outdoor figurines and 3 additional flower vases. read more
