Check out service usually is very slow And like others mentioned some of the customers are ghetto I've seen fools stealing liquor. Deli a service is alway very very slow but then again a lot of the safeway delis are the same way. I see as much a 4-5 people in the back yet only one person would be making sandwhiches. If my mother and I were able to rate a 10-star we would! Rosalie was amazing!! We were searching for a product in an isle(really looking) and she was clear across the isle but still took it upon herself to see if we needed help. She have a couple different suggestions and we were sold! She was professional, easy to talk to, and very approachable(smiling). I say approachable because OF course mom and I had another question later..Rosalie AGAIN, in another part of the store noticed- we didn't ask- we looked lost. So this is my experience today at my local Safeway: 1) I get to the Deli section as the only person in that area is turning away and walking to the far end of the deli. The 2 other Deli employees are in another area, I guess they don't help in the sandwich area. I wait for the one person to come back, wait..wait. I finally catch her eye from a distance, says she'll be right there, continues what she's doing. I wait a little more, then leave. No breakfast burrito today. You have to catch them at just the right time btw to get service promptly. If there is even 1-2 people ahead of you in line, forget it. 2) Looking for an item in the store (split peas), after looking myself awhile, wandering the store, I ask an employee who says it's in Produce. Which I don't even think is correct, plus Produce is a huge section. So we walk over there, looking, looking, no item. Finally I look at the employee for help, he says you can keep looking, I'll get back to you. Yeah, right. I ask another (older) employee who promptly steers me to the item, which btw was not in the Produce section. 3) Checking out, I remember the clerk, he had somewhat of an attitude a previous time in his line, but it's the shortest line and I'm here so oh well. I ask for a bag, when it's time to pay he does this annoying motion with his fingers like "gimme gimme". Whatever. Then he lays some bags down by my items, I can tell he wants me to bag them myself, wow. I'm getting my change, putting money in my wallet so I ignore him and he does bag it. Yay. 4) This has long been a pet peeve of mine at this store. I have never seen anything like it, anywhere. The bathroom, while it does have a code on the outside (which you have to ask an employee to open for you, like asking your parents for allowance), does not have a lock on the outside. So anyone could potentially walk in on you! If the employee forgets that someone is already in there. It could happen, especially in a rush hour situation with lots of customers. Who wants to depend on some random person working at Safeway so you do not suffer the shock and humiliation of someone walking in on you while you're on the toilet? Wtf? I have brought this issue up to Customer Service before, and they said Corporate was going to install a lock on the inside. That was months ago, and still no lock. And why can't they have a normal bathroom door with no code, and a lock on the inside, like 99.9% of public restrooms? This is really ridiculous imo. read more

I've been going to this Safeway for many years, mainly because it is the closest grocery store to my house. I do find it a bit expensive, and everyone always asked why I shop at such an expensive store, but it is convenient and they carry a larger selection of vegetarian products than other stores. I have never really had much of a problem shopping there other than the homeless people that tend to hang out in the parking lot and I would have continued to shop there, however, I have vowed to not return to this store and will go out of my way to shop at other stores after my last visit. The reason for my desertion of Safeway? I recently changed banks and did not yet have an ATM card for the new account. It was Sunday I couldn't get cash and all I had was a set of the blank checks that they give you when you open a new account. I know that Safeway has an E-Verify system and runs a check much like an ATM, couple that with the fact that they are a large business and I was a long term loyal customer so I thought nothing of it when I decided to go shopping there. With my two young children in tow, I spent a good hour filling my cart with the best bargains I could find, checked off all my coupons and went to check out. I presented my "non-printed" check to the cashier which I had written my information on. The cashier first struggled to tell if it was in fact a printed or non-printed check and when I finally told him that I had wrote my info on the check, he refused it, cleared the register and told me to talk to management, pushing me out of his lane and started ringing up the next customer! I was kind of lost at this point so he pointing me to customer service saying that management had the ability to OK such a transaction and did so on occasion. I waited for about 10 minutes, with a toddler screaming in my ear that she was hungry, for a woman to come out, tell me it was their policy not to take the checks even though they had the check verify system and told me that another person who had the authority to OK the check would be with me shortly. Finally a second "manager" approached me and immediately blurted out that it was against their policy to accept my check. I tried to show her my account balances online (that totaled well over $10,000 by the way). I also tried to show her account number verification and pointed out that they could verify my check right there and she refused to listen to me and was a bit rude. At that point I was so frustrated, the "manager" wouldn't talk to me, my kids were cranky and hungry, I had no groceries at home and no way of getting any food or money at this point. I stormed out, shouting that I would never return and as my children cried about being hungry, I broke down and cried in the car for a good 5 minutes. I live just a few minutes from Safeway, but I currently drive all the way to Food 4 Less or even WinCo, got to say it's saving me a lot of money but I CANNOT WAIT until the new Fresh and Easy on Pt. Chicago opens. read more

This is a review for the deli department . I go a lot to buy food the Chinese food . I just want to say it was good before now it's horrible they give you so much rice and very little entre. Not only that there was a huge rock in my food . I called the manager to make a complaint and pretty much doesn't do anything he said if I can go in to take him he rock because he's curious to see it ? Terribly understaffed. I have gone here around 8:30 pm 3 times now. 2 of those times there were only 2 check stands open with lines of 8+ people. I would do self checkout but I had alcohol. 1 of those 3 times the 2 lines were so bad I put my stuff down and left. Today I heard 2 workers gossiping about somebody working that day who kept running to the bathroom to throw up. Nice. The grocery bagger in my line today left to take a personal phone call. I've tried to have Safeway deliver my groceries numerous times. Especially with this Covid mess. But it has always been a negative experience and tonight was the last straw. My order was cancelled half an hour before it was supposed to be delivered. Their solution was to offer Tuesday as the next available day but at a higher delivery rate. I contacted customer service to see if I could get a delivery credit since I now have to wait another two days. Order was placed Friday. Customer service was no help and just said we will pass your feedback along. No explanation on why it was cancelled. Generic we apologize for the inconvenience. I have an infant that I don't want to take into a store and my husband works seven days a week. I needed these groceries today for the week. I'm not even sure what the point of posting this is. Terrible experience with Vanessa at the meat department! But first let me preface the review. It's bad enough to dread entering this place whenever I come in and it's not the dangerous people standing in the doorway asking you for money. It's navigation the absurdity that is their daily lines to use their checkout system. It's craziness. But let's get to the meat department. The lady's name was Vanessa. Vanessa was helping me get some meat and when she didn't know the QR code she asked another kind looking lady behind her who didn't know it or whatever. Vanessa then stormed out of the department where I was standing to open the lid where the meat was and slammed it down. Me and the kind lady awkwardly looked at each other. Vanessa then began to berate this employee for not doing her job from a distance as she walked around the meats back to the department and the kinder lady. Okay so didn't post this because I felt for giving this store a bad review...Almost as bad as a just felt walking out of Safeway at 9:30pm because I chose not to wait in a 20+ person line at self checkout for the tiny half & half I forgot to buy at Whole Foods. Yes I live literally across the street from this Safeway however I now shop at Whole Foods and find it worthwhile to drive 20 minutes if it means avoiding this location. I came here after work today and bought two things - a jar of nutella and whole wheat bread. the bread was supposedly on sale, but after checking my receipt when i got home, i realized that i was charged the original price. oh well. as i was eating my banana nutella sandwich, i started reading the nutella jar. the cash register doesn't turn into a pumpkin at midnight! so why are you closing all the registers down by 11:50? i understand that systems have to switch over before the next day and that the evening shift needs to stop working so that the graveyard shift can start but if you are going to make the customers, and by customers i mean a line of six customers move and wait... SERIOUSLY?! isn't the business built around customer service?! first they close the self checkout at 11:50 so everyone that would have checked out in the 4 self checkouts all have to move to a single file line at register 4. HOWEVER! when everyone lines up there the lady says she is closing register 4 and everyone has to move to register 1. ONLY THERE IS NOBODY AT REGISTER ONE! and the oh so wonderful lady who said she is closing register 4 is standing there talking to the guy who she finished ringing up for an extra few minutes while she calls for somebody to open register one. BTW there is also somebody behind the customer service counter and another at the produce, oh and yes now the lady from register 4 is walking around waiting for somebody else to open register 1... WAITING... WAITING... WAITING... Yes I know this is a rant and I'm being impatient but it drives me nuts that she could have just checked the people in line instead of pacing and calling for somebody else to open. Besides, doesn't her shift end at 12? That's when the other person behind the customer service counter says to the line that's getting anxious "oh it's going to be a while..." SERIOUSLY? why can't you come here and check the line instead of having us wait 10 minutes purchase our items which btw we all had 15 items or less... Another 5 minutes rolls by and we are now at 15 minutes waiting at an empty register when a guy who was clearly stocking shelves because he had the knee pads on comes up and is asked to ring us up. BACK AT REGISTER 4!!!! SERIOUSLY?! SAFEWAY you need to work on your customer service/shift change/protocols. If you were being shopped by a mystery shopper you'd FAIL! there is no reason you couldn't have checked the six other folks waiting in line in the 15 minutes you had them waiting. I was at Safeway Saturday to do my weekly shopping and the entire water and toilet paper isles were empty! Hoarding is unacceptable and it's wrong that they don't limit per customer like Walmart. I have enough water for the week but i was planning on picking up ONE pack of toilet paper, ONE! I don't get how Coronavirus causes people to go frantic on toilet paper! I saw someone in parking lot loading their truck with at least 40-50 packs of bounty toilet paper! So much was taken that they couldn't fit them in their truck! Safeway needs to limit per customer maybe 2-3 at most per customer! read more

The times my partner has bought groceries from here, we have had no problems. However, I must agree with the other reviewers when they say the customer service is attrocious! My partner lost his iphone in the store. he had only been down three aisles. When he noticed this at the check-out he asked the store manager for assistance in trying to find his phone. The manager refused rto help. No explanation given other than if the phone was found, my partner would be contacted. RUDE! read more

I love my Safeway and know many if the checkers. However I think they have hired new employees recently that have no idea of good customer service. When I worked at a grocery store and I was asked where something was I would show the customer. Not say oh I don't know somewhere in the middle. This review is solely for the bakery! Smh! Ordered a cake and paid for it this morning. Went to go and pick it up and the bakery staff looked like deers in headlights. They spent 10 minutes looking for my cake. I was already running late. My cake hadn't gotten made so I was forces to pick up a different pre made cake. I asked the girl to write something on the front and she was completely incapable and then started rubbing it off the cake taking the other frosting off with it. So I then had to pick out another cake and wasn't able to have writing in the cake. Safeway did however refund me and they didn't charge me for the cake we were stuck with. read more

I was looking for cilantro and found some dried ass cilantro that no sane person would ever eat, much less pay for! The produce section looks like a dumpster dive, but instead of free, it's at Whole Food prices. There is always a wait at this store, no matter what time of day or day or week. They are consistently understaffed. Good luck trying to use the self-check because the machines are very sensitive and you will inevitably need the staff member overseeing that area to come help you resolve an issue and they will act annoyed. The parking lot is a disaster as well. read more

This is one of the nicer Safeways in the East Bay. The staff is friendly, everything is always stocked neatly, and their facilities are very clean. I enjoy coming here every morning to purchase lunch items and my morning Starbucks. I recommend stopping in to try their Mediterranean pasta salad or a chicken bacon avocado sandwich. read more

We've been shopping here since we moved to the area 8 months ago. I have never seen so many unfriendly clerks in one store -- from the deli counter, to the pharmacy counter, to the check out line. We've about decided "must be cranky" is a job requirement. The bakery has lots of yummy selections, but is often out of basic items, like dinner rolls. Not all is lost - the pharmacists are nice & there's a really nice young pharmacy assistant who has been very helpful. Once in a while we get a friendly checker..... it must be that this store is so busy they don't need to present a welcoming attitude. read more

I showed him my bank charge and receipt and he refused to give me back the second $146.18 charged to my account. I will NEVER shop there again.
