BEWARE: Do not buy gift cards from Safeway; especially Amazon Gift Cards. Purchased an Amazon Gift Card. I'm very careful when I buy Gift Cards and examine them before I buy them. The card looked mint (not tampered with) but to my surprise, looks like someone took the card home, carefully opened the package, took the code, scratched off code so that code can't be redeemed, glued back the package and returned it to Safeway to wait to see if someone will purchase that card. Safeway will not refund; even if you tell them the card was purchased here. Hours of talking to Amazon - I will not disclose the outcome, but let's just say they knew exactly who redeemed the code of the gift card I purchased and Amazon is investigating to take care of that theif. I told them to ban their account and contact the police department, since they can see the name, address and the account. To Safeway - you lock up practically everything behind glass doors. Is there not a way to protect your gift cards from thieves that steal them and tamper with them? How about a locked case for gift cards too?? There's also a way where you can place locks on each of the metal hangers so that no one can remove them off the hangers (longs drugs do this with batteries, and we need to call over staff to unlock to buy them) - this way, we will know that the only ones that have access are safeway employees and outside vendors stocking gift cards (if they do) - so if there is an issue with gift cards, you know it's an insider. But since everyone and anyone has access to all of the gift cards there, Is security seeing who stops by to probably steal a stack of gift cards and then bring them back to your store to wait for victims to buy them? Again, if outside vendors are coming in to restock gift cards - it's time to examine if they aren't doing anything shady before they restock them too. read more

We went to Safeway Beretania to do some banking and grocery shopping. We started in the produce department and there were a lot of customers buying fresh corn for the Labor Day weekend. So when we got there the customers were digging through all the corn husk looking for the corn and there was none, so my wife asked the producer clerk trimming the stems off the red leaf lettuce, do you have more corn! No answer, so she comes back and we are waiting 5 mins and I ask her what did he say? She replied nothing, he ignored me! So I went and asked do you have more corn or do we have to get a rain check? Then he replied on lunch? Not even leaving to bring some out, so I ask him when will more be available? No answer? Then I asked what is your name? No answer, so I look over and his name tag said Serg. After I walk back and this other guy walks by and we let him know there's no corn on the shelf, he replied will bring some out, after waiting another 10-15 minutes he comes out with about 6 boxes of corn and there was about 8-10 customers waiting around for it. The customer service has really gone down, before if you asked a clerk they would show you where the item is or get it for you! I always shop there and this is the first time a produce clerk or any clerk at Safeway didn't care to try and assist a customer! read more

Why this location ? Covered parking ! Simple as that This store was the former Shuman Carriage (original Cadillac dealer). The market is on the upper level while the parking stalls are covered under the market. There are two ways in and out; southeast side with elevators and southwest side with escalators. [[HIGHLIGHT]]While this location is far from new, I will say it comes of clean and neat[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Bank of Hawaii has a little satellite branch. Their customer service counter sells money grams. But best of all IMHO is their $5 Fridays. Of the many Safeways-the Beretania location reigns supreme as their $5 specials are readily available (no waiting or pulling numbers) Located at the northeast corner of the Beretania and Piikoi intersection. Getting into the parking is easier than exiting nap be sure you check the direction you need to go making sure you get out on the exit appropriate for the direction you are heading toward. read more

Shopping in Honolulu, Hawaii... Cece and I were on a hunt for Waiola Coconut Water. It sounds odd, but the price was $4.99 (plus tax of 0.4712%) - the lowest price ever for a high quality product! We had already visited two other Safeway locations and were more determined to reach our goal! We experienced great service in Kapahulu and not so great service in Manoa. [[HIGHLIGHT]]I was hesitant to come to Beretania because it seems so busy and crowded. However, it wasn't bad at 9pm. Luckily, it's a 24 hour operation![[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] I actually called the store first and received great help! Customer Service said that they did have Waiola Coconut Milk. I spontaneously asked, "How many are there?" After a bit, the answer came back: "About 20 containers." Yippee! I should have asked, "Where?" [[HIGHLIGHT]]Beretania Safeway is relatively new and spacious. We parked on the ground level and caught the elevator up. It was so bright and clean![[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Cece knew to look in the refrigerated area at the end of an aisle... Eureka! She found it!!! The question now was - how many can we each carry? These containers are kinda heavy! Haha! ...especially because she was taking the Waiola Coconut Water with her on her flight back to Northern California! Hmm... Cece is an excellent packer, so she figured out that she can fit 6 containers in her luggage. I got 5 containers... and we checked out! Luckily, we had our strong reusable bags with us! Safeway Beretania is one of newest Safeway with ample parking. Best time to shop is on Friday when they have their $5 Fridays. You can see what's on sale on their ads in the Midweek. Always extra savings on their app. Safeway have variety of brands and more of it. I do like to come for their $10 meals like their sandwich combo or the create your own so you can pick your protein and your own sides than potato wedges and Cole slaw. For your sides, I rather choose their pasta salad, Okinawan sweet potatoes, but especially the broccoli salad! The dressing makes the broccoli salad which is one of my mom and I favorite! The bakery and flower section are worth checking out. They have a pharmacy too and I forgot who I spoke with here over the phone but he was really helpful when I was checking on their availability of a medication that was hard to get. You can get gifts card from here but just can't get it through the self check out. The nice thing about Safeway when purchasing gift cards, the gift card receipts automatically comes out after your store purchase receipt so you have a gift card activation receipt to attached to the gift card. I have been going to this Safeway location for years now, and while I find their selections a bit on the pricier side, you cannot deny that they have a lot to offer: a Cafe where you can order sandwiches and wraps, a Bakery where you can purchase bread, donuts, bagels, and other desserts, a full-service pharmacy that offers vaccinations, a Deli that offers fresh meats and seafood, a Sushi counter that offers fresh daily sushi, and an in-store Starbucks. They even have a Floral Section, where they offer fresh flowers & flower lei! One benefit of this location is the friendliness of the staff. I have never been disappointed with how I've been treated whenever I shop there, and have e[[HIGHLIGHT]]ven come to know some of the staff by name! All of that, combined with the welcoming ambianc[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]]e, makes THIS the best Safeway on the island! The Safeway supermarket on Beretania street sure has a lot of history on Oahu. If you're an old timer like me, how many of you remember at one time the Safeway supermarket on Beretaina Street used to be at the location where Petco & Walgreens currently is? About 12 years ago, Safeway moved house & relocated about a long block away, but they still remain in the Makiki neighorhood. Currently, you can find this particular Safeway supermarket where the old Schuman Carriage car dealership used to be. I don't come to this particular Safeway all the time, due to the parking situation as this particular store is quite busy, and I believe they don't have enough parking. Also, if you do come to this particular supermarket at night, may I suggest you be aware of your surroundings, as this area has some pretty sketchy people late at night. The store set up is pretty unique, as the parking lot is actually downstairs, and upon entering the supermarket, you actually have to go upstairs to get into the store. There are three ways to get into the store - stairs, escalator, or elevator. As I watch our local Safeways transform itself to this multi-use area to do much more than just grocery shopping...it worked because prior to that I've never shopped there very much at all. Besides the usual pharmacy, banking and even delivery or curbside that many grocery stores have now added for additional services they do have Starbucks and who haven't gone there for that alone...yup yup! The best thing that does set them aside is the DMV kiosk. Literally takes just a minute it's the best convenience that I truly love not just that you don't have to stand in long lines to get it done there's isn't a time that it will close lol! There is a $4.00 convenience fee added along with a 2.5% fee for credit/debit card it's still all worth it and it print it out so there is no waiting. I actually kind of like this Safeway. I remember when it was just getting built from its old location across the street. The whole second floor store situation makes this location weird and quirky. It's kinda hard to use the escalator with a bunch of bags, so I try to park on the elevator side and use that huge elevator. The Safeway store is on the second floor. The first floor is for parking and there are some small stores on the street side of the lot. The elevator lets out right next to Starbucks, so that's cool. This store is very large and there are always a lot of people shopping. I like that things seem to be rotated out (or bought out) quickly and that there are frequent sales on things I normally buy. The best deal happened when I happened to be shopping for a belated Friendsgiving celebration. Turkeys were only $0.49 per pound. What a deal. On my most recent visit, I picked up some sumo oranges for $4.99 per pound. I feel like that's less than Whole Foods and they were sweet and delicious. I'm usually impressed with the flower department at this store, but sometimes it is lacking or the flowers are old. At least they have flowers. The cashiers are nice and if you don't want to talk to a real person about your groceries, there are several self check outs. read more

I like the hot and ready to eat entrees from this Safeway. They just completed renovations and have a whole hot entrees section. It's like a buffet line, but they sell it for $9.99 per pound. I love their salt and vinegar fried chicken wings. They go on special from time to time on Fridays for $5 a pound. I also like their chicken salad and deviled egg salad. Their cakes are also very good. This is only one of the few places that makes my favorite tres leche cake. Their fruit tart and strawberry shortcake are delicious. The poke department is hit or miss. You put the shipping cart on it and it goes up with the escalator and I think the same for the coming down part. Didn't do it yet. But yeah... I think that's a cool thing. Terrible service. To anyone thinking of shopping at Safeway, do yourself a favor and drive a few extra miles to the one on Pali Highway. At least there, you won't be subjected to eye-rolls from the cashier. When I went, there were only two checkout lanes open. One had a long line, and the other had none -- so I went to the one without a line (I later realized why no one else did). The young Black female cashier looked visibly unhappy from the start. Yes, I had a lot of items -- which is exactly why I didn't go to the express lane and chose this one instead. During checkout, she couldn't find the prices for some vegetables, which was her responsibility, not mine. And when she finally handed me the receipt, she slammed it on the counter and gave me an eye-roll. She even complained about the young man who was kindly helping bag my groceries. They also had a cool book that had additional cake options that you could order in advance. Prices were a bit high, especially just to write a simple Happy Birthday "Name." Heads up...watch these guys when trying to get your free items by redeeming your digital U points. They try to fake their way out of it. I've already caught them before with the Lucerne brand eggs 12, ct a week before, and I let it slide. Tonight was the 2nd time I caught them, this time with the butter and diced tomatoes. We got there around 6pm and finally left around 9pm all because they tried to deny these digital U labels deals that are on random items all over the store. Then when they finally honored them, they on purposely locked our cart so that it wouldn't move (security measure for theft) just to be passive aggressive about us catching them on their shade. DMV duties was basically my visit to Safeway Beretania because they have a self-serve kiosk to make car registration payments. I'll be honest, as much as possible I shop at another grocery store to support local. Safeway prices can be competitive, but generally prices are higher, IMO. Here's my breakdown, Safeway is open all hours of the day, if you're a Bank of Hawaii customer, they have an in-store branch open 7 days a week. There's also a Starbucks where you can use your mobile app to pay, but you can't order in advance for pick up, and they have self checkout lines which is the trend nowadays. I do have T-Mobile, so there's an authorized dealership located downstairs, and if you are an American Savings Bank customer, they have a branch located outside of the store. Lots and lots of free and covered parking in the garage below. Don't be like me and pay for your car registration on the last day because that line almost looked like DMV lol ;-) read more

Tons of parking downstairs, always close parking and easy to access and use elevators from ground floor that are huge and hold multiple customers even with their carts and our kids and never feels full. The Bank of Hawaii inside the store is super convenient. Whether four visiting the interior Starbucks, bank, florist, etc, it has it all with fresh produce, bakery, cake decorator, pharmaceutical items, etc. it's a great one stop shop, and even has a great restaurant downstairs and the while place is centrally located!!! read more

Not sure why Safeway gets so many mediocre ratings at their various stores on Oahu. The Beretania location is the closest to me. And when I do shop at a Safeway store it is this one and the Kapahulu store that I will usually visit. Safeway was a bit pricier than most grocery stores but that was years ago. Between their $5 Friday specials, weekly sales, and app deals they are fully and well competitive with any grocery chain. Beretania Safeway is still a fairly new store and is still quite pleasant to look and shop at if a bit crowded on the weekends. Customer service is usually good. Cashiers are typically fast and courteous. This Sunday afternoon was scorching hot as most June afternoons have been...melt the product in your hair hot. Went to purchase some ice cream...Safeway usually has a nice selection on sale. When I saw the Drumstick Vanilla Ice Cream on a 2 for sale...had to get it and it got me by the tastebuds. Refreshingly sweet with nice contrasting textures from the bits of cone and peanuts. Parking stalls are big but there aren't that many stalls for this location. Street parking on Kinau St. It is usually tight on the weekend afternoons and this was a Sunday when Father's Day was being celebrated. So I walked over. read more

I always noticed Albert Nitta, store manager working hard, running through the store, checking on each department. When I had a concern, he handled it fast and professionally. This is a huge store. Workers are always working hard to restock the shelves. Store opens at 5am. Lots of free parking. Sanitation of shopping carts. Very organized. Note: there is a DMV kiosk, for car registration. Seems to be convenient, but small surcharge. Suggestion: get the Safeway application. Attach coupons. Also, the points/rewards pgm is on the application. read more

I have been shopping Safeway Beretania since it first opened. It just seems like quality and service have both deteriorated over time. Their recent remodel pushed it even further toward a one star review. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The remodel dramatically reduced the available space in each cash register line. Even a skinny person cannot unload a full shopping cart easily, as there is not room to get around the side of the cart once you are next to the conveyor.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Perhaps management has not noticed, but "skinny" is not the typical customer. I have accordingly reduced my purchases to just filling the small upper basket section, and only loading the main basket with hot foods from the deli or cases of soft drinks. While I do appreciate the excellent variety, they now have certain coupons that must be scanned on the shelf...and in some cases that is the BOTTOM shelf which is extremely difficult for many to even read. Related to this, the app has degraded from relatively simple and quick to work through, to now it simply takes far too much time to review available products and save them to your list. In spite of high prices, I no longer use the app unless there is a "must buy 4" cases of soda coupon. The real sore spot is the Deli. First, I just don't appreciate the complete takeover by Boar's Head. They have good products, but are very expensive. I have to either spend big, or get the really cheap packaged deli meats clear on the other side of the store. Also the selection of BH is rather limited, and they don't seem to rotate any of the less popular products such as Italian Beef. The bigger issue is the lack of attention and generally slow service by the Deli staff. Most are short, and usually facing away from customers performing other prep work. They do not notice when multiple customers are standing at various points of the hot/cold cases. If the back wall were mirrored, they would be able to respond better. Also there seems to be either poor organization, or they just don't prep and change/refill pans in slow periods. It simply should not take as long as it often does to serve up foods that are already prepared. They seem to take many steps, in different directions, to get gloves, proper container, utensil to handle product, and labeling. Often there is only one person actually filling customer requests, with one or two others moving back and forth to some of the cold cases out in front, or to the kitchen, or just performing other work along the back wall work space. At a minimum they should acknowledge the other customers and inform them that a particular person will be helping them shortly. Lastly, still at the Deli, while the fried chicken is very good...the size of your chickens has become ridiculously small, especially the legs and wings. I've literally received legs that were as small as a wing drum piece. My final note to management is regarding the self service checkouts. If I need to perform the work of your checkout people, and, inevitably with one or more delays due to improper scan, or unreadable scan, or other common issue, I should be compensated. If you give a straight percentage discount, or perhaps tiered based on total price, I would be more likely to use them, but with your overall pricing, I rarely see any reason to use them at present. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Ok, I almost forgot. Fix the darned shopping cart down escalator. It frequently stops working, and has done so ever since new.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] I used to be very loyal to Safeway, in fact I shopped Safeway back in the Midwest before I ever came to Hawaii. Sadly, another zero in the community, and a note for where not to shop. I must say the service here tonight was certainly laughable and probably the opposite of aloha but what can you expect from Safeway I guess even if it is in Honolulu. On a quest to find a very popular supplement for a sick dog, which every store everywhere seems to have, but not this Safeway, I had the displeasure of pushing the button and waiting 15 minutes for someone to finally cuddle along and ask if help was needed. The young man, with all his technical gizmo's gadgets and radio could not offer the slightest bit of help. Assuming it would be in alphabetical order, things were so out of place behind the locked glass cabinets. It was difficult to tell where it was. Even with the radio, he did not have the capability to simply radio upfront and ask someone to check if it is in stock. He said I would have to go to the front of the store. So I leave my basket full of groceries and go to the front of the store where a lady with a big Mr. T style fake gold chain clearly does not want to help anyone. I try to explain yet she does not seem to want to help at all and said if it's not there, we don't have it. She kept saying how they got this big shipment in of products, but that's not what I was asking at all, I simply wanted to check for a specific product. Can you believe with all their security and big glass cases and security guards to prevent theft, they don't even have a proper inventory tracking system where they could simply look up to see if the product is in stock? absolutely ridiculous and she didn't do much other than roll her eyes and act like she did not want to be at work so I left my big basket full of groceries and went to the next-door, Walmart, who seems to have everything including customer service. And then people wonder why these huge companies are replacing literally everyone with artificial intelligence and robots, and the like, it's because people like those I encountered today do not want to work, they are not happy at work and they really are little value compared to how tech can do things. Update on Safeway Beretania I been here several times but haven't really walked around and shop. I been to their florist real quick and to buy Starbucks. Yes there's a in house Starbucks. To my amaze their aisle are really wide and big and it's a really clean and nice stores. They have a nice beer aisle with all kinds of brands and lots of variety. Also they have a nice wine and hard liquor display. At this location you park underneath the store than you can take a elevator or escalator to the store. Also there's a in store Starbucks which is awesome. I'll probably come to this location more often. Be safe and wear your mask read more
